Background: In the work of a physician, not only knowledge, and professional skills (technical/hard) are important, but also psychosocial skills (relational/soft). Objectives: The primary goal of the presented research was evaluation of the level (study of the state) of communication competences of physicians and determination of the factors on which this level depends. An additional goal was analysis of the needs and educational possibilities within the existing models of education in the area of interpersonal communication provided in Medical Universities in Poland. Design, setting and participants: Information about educational curricula available on the websites of 12 Medical Universities in Poland were compared. The self-designed questionnaire and adjective check list were subject to standardization from the aspect of reliability and validity. The study groups included 1) occupationally-active physicians (185 respondents) employed in outpatient departments and hospitals, who were covered by a pre-graduate standard educational programme and not trained in interpersonal communication skills as part of their continuing education; 2) medical students covered by a standard educational programme (246 respondents). Results: The conducted analysis of the educational curricula showed a very narrow scope of problems concerning professional medical communication. The results indicating the general state of respondents’ communication competences within all aspects (motivation, skills, knowledge) were relatively low. That clearly indicated an inadequate educational model (students), and lack of post-graduate training in the area of professional medical communication (physicians). Conclusions: The education of students of medicine should cover selected classes within the scope of professional communication competences. These classes should be based on the systemically designed training of skills. The patterning by students of the relations attitudes observed in practising physicians is insufficient. It is necessary to apply a methodical evaluation of communication competences, diagnosing educational needs of occupationally active physicians in this respect. This allows the preparation of courses in accordance with the needs in the area of professional communication competences.

Nowadays, clinical medicine is not only about treating a disease (to cure), but also about treating a patient as a whole (care). The object of medicine has remained the same, a man and his health. This article aims at effective communication in physician - patient relationship. There arises a question whether effective communication aimed at active listening may help in physician - patient relationship. More precisely, what could be its outcomes when it comes to patients ́ compliance of a treatment and their further satisfaction.

Research has not yet adequately explored the potential interplay between the physician’s gender and the patient’s perception of the service quality. Although various studies have covered the measurement of service quality in the hospital industry, the gender perspective has not been touched on significantly. This study is a review article that aims to explore how gender matters to the physician-patient interaction in the service setting. It discusses the patient’s responses to physicians of different genders and the behavior of physicians of different genders. Consequently, it was found that gender is one of the factors that influence the physician-patient interaction and patients’ perception of the doctor’s competence. The gender of the physician as well as the patient could influence the communication level in medical encounters. Gender-based stereotypes in the service encounter could also affect the patient-physician interaction and the evaluations that patients give to physicians. Moreover, it was discussed that traditions, religion, culture, stereotypes and past experience serve as a foundation for customers to form a preference for the physician’s sex. The relationship between the physician and the patient is shaped by many factors lying on both the patient’s and the doctor’s side. These factors include the difference in communication style between males and females, the patient-physician gender dyad, the difference in personality traits between males and females. All these factors fall under the service dimension that is essential in measuring the quality of service.

The presented study on ethics in communication in organizational culture in healthcare facilities deals generally with ethics in health care. It touches the Hippocratic oath and ethical codes. Describes the patient's relationship as a client of a healthcare facility and a physician in terms of the specificity of their situation. Indicates the difference between the standard market client and the clients of the healthcare market. In view of these differences, the communication process and possibilities are characterized.
Prezentowany artykuł porusza etyczne aspekty komunikacji w kulturze organizacyjnej w ogólnej etyce opieki zdrowotnej. Przedstawia on przysięgę Hipokratesa i kodeksy etyczne. Opisuje relację pacjenta jako klienta placówki opieki zdrowotnej i lekarza ze względu na specyfikę ich sytuacji. Wskazuje różnicę między standardem klienta a rynkiem opieki zdrowotnej. Z uwagi te na różnice scharakteryzowano proces komunikacji i możliwości.
