Opis:
Synthesis of nanocomposite chitosan-TiO2 have been done. Nanocomposite made of chitosan was isolated from crab shell namely α-chitosan and squid pens as β-chitosan. Nanocomposite was synthesized by combining the function of chitosan as supporting material with TiO2 particle that have high photocatalytic activity. The nanocomposite characterized by FTIR and SEM/EDX analysis show the functional groups of chitosan and and also surface morphology of nanocomposite chitosan-TiO2. The FTIR spectra shows adsorption band of O-Ti-O at 677-695 cm-1, and characteristic adsorption band of chitosan at wavenumbers 1600 cm-1 for -NH2 and 3400 cm-1 for -OH. From SEM/EDX analysis can be seen that TiO2 has been distributed evenly on surface of chitosan. The nanocomposite was applied for photodegradation of methylene blue in aqueous medium on UV light radiation. The optimum percent photodegradation at wavelength 660 nm by the nanocomposite α-chitosan-TiO2 and β-chitosan-TiO2 are 59,48% and 59,82%, respectively.

Opis:
The most commonly occurring betacyanin plant pigment in nature is betanin (5-O-glucoside of betanidin). Its main source is red beet root (Beta vulgaris L.), used for production of food colorants on a commercial scale [1]. Due to photo-lability of betacyanins, an eff ect of UV-irradiation on betanin degradation in various solutions containing organic solvents was investigated. Organic solvents are used frequently in many stages of pigment preparation or isolation, therefore, knowledge of betalain stability and degradation characteristics in these solutions is essential. Pigment solutions at a concentration of 1 mg/ml were prepared in diff erent solvents: water as well as aqueous solutions of 50% (v/v) acetonitrile, 50% (v/v) methanol or 50% (v/v) ethanol, at the pH range 3–8. Acetate, phosphate and citrate buff ers were used for the experiments. As a result of the pigment photo-decomposition, numerous decarboxylated and dehydrogenated derivatives were formed. Spectrophotometric studies enabled determination of the pigment retention (percentage of the pigment residue relative to its initial concentration after decomposition time). The studies demonstrated betanin high lability in all solvents, not only at extreme pH values, but also in the middle pH range which, in general, provides higher stability of betalains.

Results of the study into photodegradation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and pentachlorophenol in aqueous solutions have been presented. Quantum yields and rate constants of the reactions were determined. Intermediate products were identified by GC/MS method. The experiments confirmed formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in photochemical reactions. The findings showed that formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, and mainly octachlorodibenzo-p- -dioxin, is privileged in the studied reactions when compared to polychlorinated dibenzofurans regardless of the number of chlorine atoms in the molecule. It was also established that increase in the number of chlorine atoms in a molecule resulted in higher chemical efficiency of the reaction.

Nano TiO2 and TiO2/MWCNT nanocomposite synthesized by the sol-gel method were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, EDAX and FTIR techniques. These nanoparticles were used for photocatalytic decolorisation and degradation of three different reactive dyes such as Reactive Orange 16 (RO 16), Reactive Yellow 145 (RY 145) and Reactive Red 195 (RR 195) and real textile composite wastewater under the UVA and UVA-LED irradiation at room temperature. The maximum color removal of 96% and COD removal of 72% were achieved after 5 h in the presence of TiO2/MWCNT and H2O2 under UVA-LED irradiation. The kinetic studies obey pseudo-first order kinetics which is discussed in terms of the Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetic model. The maximum degradation of 50% was achieved after 5 h in the presence of H2O2 using TiO2/MWCNT/UVA-LED for real textile composite wastewater. This study revealed that TiO2/MWCNT has improved the photocatalytic activity when compared to that of bare TiO2 under similar conditions. UVA-LED could be an alternative light source for the replacement of the conventional UV light for the photocatalytic treatment of reactive dyes.

Opis:
Silver (Ag) particle is a promising photocatalyst material with relatively high catalytic activity and good absorption in the visible light region. A dendritic structure of Ag has been studied in the purpose to enhance photocatalytic activity due to a large surface area and active site number of the metallic Ag particles. In this work, the Ag dendritic structure was synthesized from a surfactant-free electrolyte using the square wave voltammetry technique. The time-dependent growth of the Ag dendrites and their photocatalytic activity on methylene blue (MB) photodegradation are reported. Morphological analysis exhibits the fractal dendritic structure of Ag was found to continuously grow by increasing the deposition time. The Ag dendrites showed a low charge transfer resistance (366.21 Ω) and high specific capacitance (2.09 F/g). A high rate of MB degradation (45.57%) under ultraviolet irradiation indicated that the Ag dendrites produced using this technique are effective for the photocatalytic degradation of MB dye.

ZSM-5 synthesized by the hydrothermal method from raw kaolin clay was used as support to prepare TiO2/ZSM-5 catalysts via the sol-gel method. All prepared samples were characterized by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), particle size analysis and surface area measurement. The photocatalytic performance of TiO2/ZSM-5 was investigated based on rhodamine B (RhB) removal under UV radiation (450-600 nm. The results showed that the kaolin clay was successfully transformed into ZSM-5. The BET surface area and pore size distribution of the synthesized ZSM-5 were 364 m2/g and 0.54 nm, respectively. SEM and TEM revealed that TiO2 nanoparticles were well distributed on the surface of ZSM-5. The composite TiO2/ZSM-5 catalyst showed 98.53% removal, which is higher than that of pure TiO2 (80.13%) due to adsorption and degradation of RhB (5.0 mg/dm3) under 60 min UV light irradiation at 1 g/dm3 photocatalyst loading. The synergistic effect of TiO22 and ZSM-5, including adsorption, conduction band electron (e-), and valence-band holes (h+), makes the composite superior to pure TiO2, showing its potential for the degradation of organic dye.

The paper presents the test results of non-wovens modified by an activator in different concentrations, produced by the spun bonding method. The aim of the research was to assess the photodegradation process of modified PP non-wovens in dependence on the selected concentration of the modifying agent in the fibre mass and the possibility of introducing a new range of PP non-wovens in agriculture. Non-wovens having a mass per unit area of 100 g/m2 were exposed to sunlight during its highest intensity for a period of four months, and UV irradiance was tested in a xenon lamp with radiation doses corresponding to exposure to sunlight. The samples were exposed to the same energy value of visible and UV radiation in a given series of exposure. For the variants of non-wovens tested, the tensile strength and mass per unit area were tested and the surface topography of the non-wovens analysed. Microscopic analysis of fibre damage in the modified non-wovens was carried out after different degrees of exposure to light. It was observed that PP non-woven samples exposed outdoors degraded more intensively than those tested in the Xenotest.

The application of photocatalytic processes for the decontamination treatment of polluted water has inspired very extensive studies. Titanium dioxide with its large band gap energy and appropriate redox potential was found as one of the most promising semiconductors for the photodegradation of pollutants in the water as well as in gas phase. The titania-silica aerogels obtained by a simple co-hydrolysis method was applied in the photodegradation of the model organic compound. Different ageing times and heat treatment temperatures were found to influence both the activity and the textural properties of the photocatalysts. The obtained aerogels are efficient photodegradation catalysts of methylene blue and allow a removal up to 98 and 78% of the model pollutant from 20 and 500 ppm solutions, respectively.

The paper presents the effect of UV radiation of 254 nmwavelength on the mutagenic activity of aquatic solutions of 3-chlorophenol (3-CP), 2,4-dichlorophenol (PCP), 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) and pentachlorophenol (PCP). Mutagenicity studies were carried out on two Salmonella strains: TA98 and TA100, with and without metabolic activation by S9 mix. Stable intermediate products of photodegradation have been identified using the GC/MS method. Chlorophenols in doses below 0.1µg were strongly mutagenic towards both strains: TA98 and TA100. The mutagenic properties of aquatic solutions of chlorophenols for both strains decreased as follows: PCP>=2,4-DCP>2,4,6-TCP>3-CP. Aquatic solutions of three chlorophenols after their photodegradation were non-mutagenic for both bacterial strains, except for 2,4-dichlorophenol. In the case of this compound, the products of its decomposition were more mutagenic for the TA100 strain. No significant metabolic activation by S9 mix was observed which suggests a direct mutagenic impact of chlorophenols on the tested Salmonella strains.

Opis:
UV filters are classified as environmental pollutants (emerging pollutants). One of the most frequently detected UV filters in real samples is 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA). It has been shown that conventional technologies applied in sewage treatment plants are not adapted for complete removal of sunscreen agents. Therefore, there is a trend to undertake activities leading to improvement of water quality by enhancing treatment methods. This is important due to the fact that in an aqueous environment, in the presence of UV radiation or sunlight irradation, PBSA generates reactive oxygen species that can damage the DNA of living organisms. The aim of study was to investigate an effect of pH and TiO2 on PBSA stability in the presence of UV radiation. It was found that the rate of PBSA degradation depends on the catalyst dose and pH of solution. The photocatalysis reaction was carried out in a Heraeus laboratory exposure set equipped with a 150 W medium pressure mercury lamp. The course of PBSA degradation process as a function of time was monitored using UV/VIS spectrophotometer and liquid chromatograph equipped with UV-Vis detector.
