Opis:
Due to interesting role of dihydropyridines in cardiovascular diseases and drug resistance studies and lack of a fluorine-18 labeled imaging agent for L-type calcium channel studies, this study was designed. [18F]Dimethyl 2-(fluoromethyl)-6-methyl-4-(2-nitrophenyl)-1,4-dihydropyridine-3,5-dicarboxylate 2 was prepared in no-carrier-added (n.c.a.) form from a starting brominated compound in one step at 80°C in Kryptofix2.2.2/[18F]. Compound 2 was administered to normal rats via their tail veins for preliminary biodistribution studies and the ID/g% of the labeled compound was determined up to 3 h post injections. Coincidence images were obtained in rats 5 to 120 min. Radiofluorination on bromo precursor gave a fluorinated compound in 95% radiochemical purity and a 8% yield shown by RTLC and HPLC. Biodistribution studies showed that the tracer is accumulated in the heart in the first few minutes, followed by metabolism resulting in very soluble 18F-containing metabolites eliminated through the urinary tract. In coincidence images, the target organ was shown to be the heart. Lung had high accumulation possibly due to the presence of Ca2+ channels and/or hydrolyzing enzymes showing a significant myocardial uptake at 120 min. The data demonstrates a significant agreement with the reported L-type calcium channels throughout the animal body. To our knowledge, this is the first example of 18F-DHPs in the literature.

Opis:
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a common encounter in otorhinolaryngology. It is a non-lymphomatous squamous cell carcinoma that occurs in the epithelial lining of the nasopharynx and shows varying degrees of differentiation. The aetiology is multifactorial. The disease is more common in the Chinese, those exposed to Epstein–Barr virus and in individuals with environmental factors, such as cigarette smoking, consumption of salted fish or preserved vegetables containing volatile nitrosamine, and exposure to industrial fumes or household smoke. Signs and symptoms include neck swelling, hearing loss, nasal blockage, epistaxis, cranial nerve palsy, headache, neck pain, earache or discomfort, weight loss and central nervous system manifestation when distant metastasis is present. Amongst these manifestations, 60% of patients will present with cervical lymphadenopathy followed by epistaxis which occurs in 40% of cases. However, distant site involvement uncommonly becomes the sole presenting symptom. We report a 58-year-old Chinese patient with nasopharyngeal carcinoma who presented with bilateral lower limb weakness. The patient was initially seen by an orthopaedic surgeon, with various radiological investigations conducted, including magnetic resonance imaging. Metastatic lesions were detected at the lumbar vertebra, sacrum and iliac bone. After positron emission tomography, a suspicious primary malignant lesion was detected in the nasopharynx and its biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The patient was referred to the oncology team for definitive treatment, but refused further therapy.
Rak jamy nosowo-gardłowej to często spotykany nowotwór w praktyce lekarza otorynolaryngologa. Zmiany przerzutowe wykryto w obrębie kręgów lędźwiowych, kości krzyżowej i kości biodrowej. Pozytonowa tomografia emisyjna wykazała obecność podejrzanej pierwotnej zmiany złośliwej w jamie nosowo-gardłowej, a biopsja potwierdziła rozpoznanie raka nosogardła. Pacjent został skierowany na oddział onkologiczny celem leczenia radykalnego, lecz odmówił dalszej terapii.

Opis:
Introduction. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that provides tomographic images and measures quantitative parameters of cell viability and metabolic activity of tissues. The most important used tracer in PET is an 18-F-Fluorodeoxy-glucose (FDG), the glucose molecule of which is labeled with a radiotracer and allows measurement and mapping of tissue glucose uptake. There are many studies in PET/CT which rely on some mammalian species, and recently on fish. Objective. The aim of this survey by using FDG-PET/CT are to optimize and determine FDG uptake in fish, in this case, common carp (Cyprinus carpio) using three treatments: Basic fish meal, Vita Pulvis and Probiotics s with two replications were used. Sphere Volume of interest (VOI) were drawn hand for the all organs, and standard uptake value (SUV) means were calculated. Results. The SUV mean for glucose uptake in the liver and gastrointestinal tract of fish were more similar to those of humans than rats or mice. SUV mean in fish fed by Probiotics ss in the major organ were less than those fed by Vita Pulvis and basic fish meal. The results present the opportunity to focus on studies of metabolism and screening for the effects of nutrients on body development.

Abstract Bleomycin (BLM), labeled with radioisotopes, is widely used in therapy and diagnosis. In this study, BLM was labeled with 62Zn for oncologic PET studies. The complex was obtained at pH = 2 in saline at 90°C in 25 min. Radio-TLC showed an overall radiochemical yield of 95 97% (radiochemical purity > 97%). Stability of complex was checked in vitro in mice and human plasma/urine. Preliminary in vivo studies were performed to determine complex stability and distribution of 62Zn BLM in normal and fibrosarcoma-bearing mice. 62Zn BLM accumulated significantly in induced fibrosarcoma tumors in mice according to biodistribution/imaging studies. 62Zn BLM can be used in PET oncology studies due to its suitable physicochemical properties as a diagnostic complex in vitro and in vivo. Further studies should be performed for evaluation of the complex behavior in larger mammals.

Opis:
The interfacial structure and binding forces of polytrimethylene terephthalate/polyethylene terephthalate filament were investigated through the methods of Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy. When two molten polymers met during the spinning process, an interface layer between the PTT and PET components formed and played an important role in binding the two components together. When the blending time was sufficient, an ester-interchange reaction took place with the generation of the copolymer. The PET recrystallisation was observed in the DSC curve under the influence of entangled PTT molecular chains. The morphology of the cross-section and side view proved that the linear boundary line was short and weaker in binding without a chemical bond and molecular diffusion. Side-by-side bi-component fiber and split-type fiber was able to be controllably spun by adjusting the spinning parameters.

Plastics play an important role in our lives due to their versatility, lightness and low production cost. They can be found in almost every industry such as automotive, construction, packaging, medical, and engineering applications among others. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most consumed plastics worldwide in the packaging sector, which is why its useful life is usually very short, causing serious problems due to high disposal in the environment and urban landfills. The thermochemical degradation of PET has been studied by some researchers and it has been found that its degradation products are of high added value, which is why this work focuses on presenting the results obtained in the literature.

A concept of producing reinforcing bars for concrete elements from waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles is presented in the paper. The proposed technology of production harnesses strips of PET cut from bottles and thermal treatment. Finally, a sand-resin coating is applied to the composite bars. Produced bars can be differentiated by utilising different numbers of strips influencing the diameter of a bar. The key mechanical properties of the bars containing 3 to 8 strips were tested during the research program. Maximum loadings and displacements were established. Problems regarding the future application of the bars in question were discussed. Areas of need for further research were pointed out.

Opis:
Osteomyelitis is an inflammation of the bone caused by a pyogenic organism that affects about 13 and 90 out of every 10 000 children and adults respectively. Symptoms of osteomyelitis are often nonspecific, including fever, chills, fatigue, lethargy or irritability. The major cause of bone infections is Staphylococcus aureus, however other pathogens may also lead to osteomyelitis. Due to nonspecific clinical picture and pathogenesis of osteomyelitis, the diagnostic process may be difficult, especially in the chronic form of the disease. It is essential to recognize this interdisciplinary malady and carry out a diagnostic process of osteomyelitis. The physical examination is extremely important in recognizing the osteomyelitis. The doctor ought to note scars, wound, erythema or oedema over the involved area and ask for systemic symptoms and bone pain. Subsequently, a physician should commission laboratory tests and microbiological examination, in order to verify the pathogenic organism, which must be treated with antibiotics. To put the right diagnosis, other studies such as plain radiography, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, nuclear modalities must be performed. In differential diagnosis, other diseases such as bone tumours, fractures, Charcot Arthropathy, soft tissue infection, gout, osteonecrosis, and SAPHO syndrome must be considered. When both the diagnosis and the differential diagnosis is done, antimicrobial therapy is a treatment of choice together with an eventual surgical treatment which may be essential in certain cases. The differential diagnosis in patients with bone pain and systemic symptoms may be sometimes misleading and complicated. It is important, both for physician and patient, to recognize, carry out diagnostic and differential process in a way that a proper treatment shall be applied as soon as possible in order to avoid its complications, including even in an amputation of the affected limb.

The 18O isotopic water permeation and separation characteristics of a hydrophobic PTFE membrane using Air Gap Membrane Distillation (AGMD) and Vacuum Enhanced Membrane Distillation (VEMD) were investigated. Permeation fluxes were measured by weighing the collected membrane-permeated water vapor. 18O/16O of each water sample was analyzed by the Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS). We observed the effects of the air filled membrane pores and the temperature gradient applied to the membrane surfaces on the vapor permeation flux and the oxygen isotope separation for the first time. For both AGMD and VEMD, the permeation flux and the degree of 18O separation increased as the membrane interfacial temperature gradient increased. Even though, oxygen isotope separation and the permeation flux for VEMD is slightly higher than AGMD, the latter may be more efficient from the system's operational point of view.

Opis:
In this paper, we present prospects for using the Jagiellonian positron emission tomograph (J-PET) detector to search for discrete symmetries violations in a purely leptonic system of the positronium atom. We discuss tests of CP and CPT symmetries by means of ortho-positronium decays into three photons. No zero expectation values for chosen correlations between ortho-positronium spin and momentum vectors of photons would imply the existence of physics phenomena beyond the standard model. Previous measurements resulted in violation amplitude parameters for CP and CPT symmetries consistent with zero, with an uncertainty of about 10−3. The J-PET detector allows to determine those values with better precision, thanks to the unique time and angular resolution combined with a high geometrical acceptance. Achieving the aforementioned is possible because of the application of polymer scintillators instead of crystals as detectors of annihilation quanta.

Introduction. Oral cancer is the second most common malignancy and there is an epidemic alert by WHO for oral cancers projected for 2030. The tongue remains the most common intraoral site for oral cancer worldwide. Aim. To present a case report. Description of the case. A 56-year-old patient was suffering from carcinoma of the tongue. He developed metastases in the lungs and upper part of the vertebral column. The PET scan report revealed the presence of hypermetabolic cells in the metastatic tissue. The biopsy of the lesion on the upper part of the back did not show neoplastic cells, epithelioid cells and giant cells. Radiotherapy was given for 25 cycles. Both the lungs were affected by metastases. Lastly the patient expired due to cardio-respiratory failure. Conclusion. Tobacco is the most important known risk factor for the development of tongue cancer. The tumors in their early stage with complete excisional treatment have good prognosis. There is usually a history of long standing leukoplakia or erythroplakia. Ideally, imaging should take place prior to biopsy. Surgical procedures such as hemiglossectomy can cause functional defects in speech and swallowing. Difficulty in diagnosis results in inappropriate treatment.
