Opis:
In a pot experiment conducted in a greenhouse, the effect of CCC Bercema growth inhibitor to reduce vegetative shoot growth of perennial ryegrass and cocksfoot was studded. The experiment was set up in triplicate. Growth regulator was applied once, in a form of an aqueous solution. The following experimental objects were specified: control object, Bercema with a concentration of 10%, 20% and 30%. Ten measurements were performed every 3 days. The study was conducted under conditions of 12-hour artificial light daily. The results were statistically analyzed using two-factorial variance analysis . It was found that the greatest shoot growth reduction of ryegrass due to the highest inhibitor concentration (B- 30%), but for cocksfoot under the influence of the minimal concentration (B- 10%), compared to the control object. It has been noted that cocksfoot is more sensitive to the applied growth regulator, resulted in significantly greater inhibition of shoot regrowth than for ryegrass. In the experiment with the perennial ryegrass significant differences in the growth of shoots were found under the influence of inhibitor application at a concentration of 30%, compared to the control object. In the case of cocksfoot, all the concentration increases of Bercema inhibitor significantly differentiated the shoots regrowth.

The analysis of seed health and germination capacity of 7 varieties of Lolium perenne, originated from two breeding station and two seed company localized in different places of Poland, harvested in 2006, 2007 and 2008 were performed. Results of mentioned analysis indicated that seeds were contaminated by numerous species of fungi. The most numerous group of fungi were saprophytes or weak parasites such as: Alternaria alternata, Epicoccum nigrum, Septonema chaetospira and Penicillium spp. Pathogenic species were represented by species of Drechslera, Fusarium, Phoma, Curvularia lunata and Bipolaris sorokiniana. Seed germination capacity was influenced by contamination of fungi. It was found that seed more often contaminated by fungi germinated much poorer then seed with lower infection.

Opis:
The creation of new perennial ryegrass varieties is impossible without instant access to wide range of natural variation i.e. to the ecotypes originating from different regions. The main goal of described experiment was to compare number of morphological, phenological and useful traits of European core collection of perennial ryegrass ecotypes in climatic conditions of Poland. Total number of 156 objects (incl. 4 standard varieties) originated from different regions of Europe were exposed to two management regimes (conservation and frequent cutting). During three subsequent years 22 qualitative and quantitative traits described variation of ‘main collection’. Further, on the basis of cluster analysis ‘sub-collection’ of 28 ecotypes from 9 clusters was selected and evaluated for 71 traits in field in similar management regimes as ‘main collection’. On the basis of described ecotypes variation it was possible to indicate following regions of ecotype origin in Europe: South Europe, West Europe, North-Middle Europe and Romania and Hungary. None of tested ecotypes exposed better yield formation than control varieties, however few ecotypes appeared to have better particular traits (better winter performance, faster spring regrowth etc.). Traits associated with inflorescence morphology (distance between florets in spikelet and distance between spikelets in spike, length of spikelet) seems to be the most stable traits, as contrary to abundance of inflorescences, tendency to produce inflorescences in year of sowing and green matter yield of first cut. High differentiation of ecotypes examined indicate existence of many botanical varieties as well as ecotypes of transition nature.

The total forms of cadmium were determined in dry matter of perennial ryegrass with the use of ASA method. The contents of these elements were higher in the fertilized variants as compared to the control. No significant differences were found among the contents of investigated elements compared in plants treated with different multicomponent fertilizers. The increasing rates of nitrogen decreased soil pH and, thereby, enhanced the availability and concentration of heavy metals in perennial ryegrass.

The many years’ study on species composition and harmfulness of aphids infesting perennials in the decorative plant collection Agricultural University in Poznań permited to ascertain occurrence of 23 aphid species on 66 species of decoratice perennials, representing 20 botanical families. The species that occurred in all the four study seasons in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2005 included: Aphis fabae Scop., Brachycaudus cardui (L.) and Aphis sedi Kalt.. Very often Aphis newtoni Theob., Acyrthosiphon malvae (Mosl.), Brachycaudus helichrysi Kalt. and Longicaudus trirhodus (Walk.) were found. Spring and early summer was the period of numerous occurrence of aphids on decorative perennials. The high degree of plant infestation was resulted in decreasing the plant’ decorative value. The aphid infestation may be especially dangerous for numerous cultivars of Dahlia x cultorum, Eryngium planum, Echinops ritro, Leucanthemum maximum, Papaver orientale, Sedum aizoon, Iris sibirica, Yucca filamentosa, Achillea ptarnica, Dicentra eximia, Doronicum orientale i Geum coccineum.

Opis:
Although Dobšina Ice Cave (DIC, Carpathians, Slovakia) is located outside the high-mountain area, it hosts one of the most extensive blocks of perennial subterranean ice, the volume of which is estimated at more than 110,000 m3. Frozen bat remains were found in the lowermost part of the perennial ice block. They belong to Myotis blythii (Tomes) and the M. mystacinus morpho-group. The radiocarbon dating of bat soft tissues yielded ages of 1266–1074 cal. yr BP and 1173–969 cal. yr BP. The undetermined bat, found in the same part of the ice section in 2002, was previously dated at 1178–988 cal. yr BP (Clausen et al., 2007). The dates testify that the ice crystallized at the turn of the Dark Ages Cold Period and the Medieval Warm Period. The calculated accumulation rate of cave ice varies between 0.7 cm/year and 1.4 cm/year at that time, and is similar to the present ice accumulation rate in DIC. Constant crystallization of ice during the Medieval Warm Period is hypothesized to reflect dry summer seasons since the supply of relatively warm water in the summer is one of the key factors causing the erosion of cave ice. The uppermost sample was covered with 20.6 m of ice. Between ca 1065 cal. yr BP and the present day, the ice grew faster than between ca 1210 yr BP and ca 1065 yr BP by a factor of 1.3–1.8. This may have resulted from conditions favourable for ice accumulation during the Little Ice Age.

An important role in the agricultural agrocenosis is attributed to entomopathogenic fungi. They limit the occurrence of certain populations of soil pests and insects overwintering in the soil environment, or held in the pupation. Fungi are the only pathogens of arthropods witch have the ability to infect plant pests directly by body. However, bacteria are the largest group of microorganisms inhabiting the soil. The aim of this study was to compare the species composition and the severity of the occurrence of entomopathogenic fungi in soils of monoculture crops perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). The material consisted of soil samples taken from the experimental research conducted in two experimental stations of the Central Research Centre for Cultivar. The fungi isolated from soil insecticides using a method developed by the selective medium.

This paper presents analyses of the thermophysical and chemical properties of eleven perennial crop species harvested in one-year rotation cycles. The crops included four species grown for biomass in the form of straw, five species producing semi-wood biomass, and two species yielding wood biomass. The research comprised three consecutive crop harvests. In each harvesting season, biomass samples for analyses were taken on six dates at one-month intervals. Thermophysical and chemical properties of the biomass were significantly differentiated within the main experimental factors and their interactions. The biomass produced by Virginia mallow had the best quality parameters as solid fuel. In fact, it achieved the lowest water content and the highest lower heating value during all of the analyzed seasons and harvest dates. The biomass of the species yielding straw or semi-wood products attained better quality as solid fuel on later harvest dates. In turn, the quality of willow biomass remained practically unchanged between the harvest dates.

Shoot tips excised from shoot culture of Salvia officinalis were encapsulated in 2% or 3% (w/v) sodium alginate and exposed to 50 mM calcium chloride for complexation. Immediately or after 6, 12 or 24 weeks of storage at 4°C, the synthetic seeds were cultured for 6 weeks on half-strength MS medium supplemented with indole-3- acetic acid (IAA) (0.1 mg/l) and solidified with 0.7% agar. The frequency of shoot and root emergence from encapsulated shoot tips was affected by the concentrations of sodium alginate and additives in the gel matrix (sucrose, gibberellic acid, MS nutrient medium) as well as duration of storage. The frequency of shoot and root induction of non-stored synthetic seeds was highest with shoot tips encapsulated with 2% sodium alginate containing 1.5% sucrose and 0.5 mg/l gibberellic acid (GA3). Shoot tips maintained their viability and ability to develop shoots even after 24 weeks of storage when they were encapsulated in 3% alginate with 1/3 MS medium, sucrose (1.5%) and GA3 (0.25 mg/l). Root formation tended to decrease with storage time. Overall, 90% of the plantlets derived from stored and non-stored synthetic seeds survived in the greenhouse and grew to phenotypically normal plants. This procedure can enable the use of synthetic seed technology for germplasm conservation of S. officinalis, a plant species of high medical and commercial value.
