Opis:
The paper presents the properties of surface oxide layers with an increased content of carbon for tribological applications. The composite surface oxide layers were produced using a two-step technology through hard anodising of the surface of an aluminium alloy, followed by thermochemical treatment of anodic oxide coatings. The surface oxide layers were subjected to tribological tests in an oil-less sliding couple with T5W plastic. The presented test results confirm the usefulness of the proposed modifications of surface oxide layers for the purpose of enhancing the operational durability of oil-less sliding couples in a reciprocating motion.

Opis:
The oxidation kinetics of forged 12Cr-MoVW steel was investigated in an air (N2+O2) atmosphere at 873-1073 K (Δ50 K) using thermogravimetric analysis. The oxidized samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction, and the surface and cross-sectional morphologies were examined using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The forged 12Cr-MoVW steel samples exhibited parabolic behavior and a low oxidation rate compared with their as-cast counterparts. A protective oxide layer was uniformly formed at relatively low temperature (≤973 K) for the forged samples, which thus exhibited better oxidation resistance than the as-cast ones. These oxides are considered solid-solution compounds such as (Fe, Cr)2O3.

The U-type ferrite is a kind of hexagonal ferrite, and it is known as a microwave absorber in the X-band. The magnetic and dielectric loss of the U-type ferrite change to the composition and coating layer, etc. In this study, the silicon oxide layer was coated on the substituted U-type ferrites to improve microwave absorption characteristics. The complex permittivity and complex permeability were measured using toroidal specimens that were press-molded and the measured frequency range was set from 2-18 GHz. The improvement of the microwave absorption rate was different according to the type of the substituted U-type ferrites. Only in the substituted U-type ferrites with nickel and zinc, an improvement in the microwave absorption rate due to enhancement of magnetic loss was confirmed. The highest microwave absorption was 99.9% at 9.6 GHz, which was S_Z0.5 U.

Surface treatment, both mechanical, chemical and thermal causes a number of changes to the external structure of meterial details. The obtained properties are intended to improve the quality of material details made of a given alloy or pure metal. This paper presents the results of mechanical surface treatment to the thickness of the oxide layer after heat treatment of the TU6Al14V ELI alloy. The experiments were performed for a rod with a diameter of 5 mm cut into semicircular slices. The samples were mechanically activated by mechanical treatment of the surface: sandblasting with glass balls for 5 minutes, sanded with 40, 180, 220 and 800 grit sandpaper for 7.5 and 15 minutes. Using an optical microscope, the microstructure of the samples etched with Kroll's solution was assessed and the surface roughness parameters were measured. The next step was to carry out the heat treatment (at the temperature of 550 oC, for 5 hours), and then the roughness parameters and the thickness of the oxide layer were measured using a scanning microscope. The conducted research has shown that mechanical treatment of the surface resulting in an increase in surface development causes an increase in the thickness of the oxide layer formed during heat treatment. However, machining to reduce surface development, such as polishing, reduces the thickness of the oxide layer. The test results can be used to obtain the desired thickness of the oxide layer in the production of elements requiring increased resistance to wear or corrosion.

Opis:
In this study, the structure, chemical composition and topography of oxide layers produced on the surface of the AISI 321 austenitic steel in the annealing process were analyzed. Heat treatment was done at 980°C temperature for 1 hour time in different conditions. The annealing was done in a ceramic furnace in oxidation atmosphere and in vacuum furnaces with cylindrical molybdenum and graphite chambers. The analysis was carried out using the following methods: a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX), a transmission electron microscope (TEM) equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX), an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), a secondary ion mass spectrometer with time-of-flight mass analyzer (TOF SIMS) and an atomic force microscope (AFM). The oxide layer formed during annealing of the AISI 321 steel at 980°C consisted of sub-layers, diversified in the chemical composition. The thickness of the oxidized layer is depended on the annealing conditions. In a ceramic furnace in oxidation atmosphere, the thickness of the oxide layer was of 300-500 nm, in a vacuum furnace with molybdenum and graphite heating chambers, it ranged from 40 to 300 nm and from a few to 50 nm, respectively. TOF SIMS method allows to get average (for the surface of 100 μm × 100 μm) depth profiles of concentration of particular elements and elements combined with oxygen. In oxide layers formed in vacuum furnaces there are no iron oxides. Titanium, apart from being bounded with carbon in carbides, is a component of the oxide layer formed on the surface of the AISI 321 steel.
W prowadzonej analizie wykorzystano skaningowy mikroskop elektronowy (SEM) wyposażony w spektrometr promieniowania X (EDX), transmisyjny mikroskop elektronowy (TEM) wyposażony w spektrometr promieniowania X (EDX), dyfraktometr rentgenowski (XRD X-Ray Diffraction), spektrometr mas jonów wtórnych z analizatorem czasu przelotu (TOF SIMS) oraz mikroskop sił atomowych (AFM).

The aim of this paper is to propose a solution that will make it possible to perform tribological tests of materials intended for rolling elements (e.g., rollers) interacting with a flat surface (e.g., sliding door guide). Tribological tests were carried out on a T-17 test stand, which was equipped with a holder that made it possible to perform tests in the roller-plate couple. The paper presents the results of tribological tests of a typical polymer PA 6 used in sliding door systems interacting with anodised and non-anodised aluminium alloys. The analysis of the tribological tests was supplemented by stereometric studies. The studies showed the possibility of performing tests for the roller-plate couple with the use of a T-17 test stand. The influence of the modification of the aluminium alloy surface (material of the sliding door guide) on tribological properties of the examined friction node was also shown.
W pracy zostały przedstawione rezultaty badań tribologicznych typowego polimeru PA 6 mającego zastosowanie w systemach drzwi przesuwnych w skojarzeniu z anodowanym i nieanodowanym stopem aluminium. Analiza testów tribologicznych została uzupełniona badaniami stereometrycznymi. Badania wykazały możliwość przeprowadzania testów dla skojarzenia typu rolka–płytka z użyciem stanowiska badawczego T-17. Wykazano również wpływ modyfikacji powierzchni stopu aluminium (materiału prowadnicy drzwi przesuwnych) na właściwości tribologiczne badanego węzła tarcia.

Purpose: The paper presents the results of microstructure, surface development and thickness of the oxide layer on the pure titanium Grade 2 after mechanical activation and heat treatment (550°C/5h). Design/methodology/approach: Studies show that it is possible to control the thickness of the oxide layer by using different materials to change the roughness of surface - mechanical activation before heat treatment. After mechanical activation and heat treatment, the results of the thickness of the oxide layer as well as a level of surface development were obtained, presented and discussed. Findings: The conducted research have proved that mechanical activation of the surface which cause increase of surface development results in greater thickness of oxide layer which is formed during heat treatment. Nevertheless mechanical activation that results in decrease of surface development, such as polishing, results in decrease of oxide layer thickness. Research limitations/implications: The conducted research have showed up that mechanical activation of the surface which cause increase of surface development results in greater thickness of oxide layer which is formed during heat treatment. Nevertheless, mechanical activation that results in decrease of surface development, such as polishing, results in decrease of oxide layer thickness. Practical implications: are possible using similar method for passivation titanium alloys for medical application. Originality/value: The paper presents the possibility of using mechanical preactivation of surface before heat treatment passivation.

Tin dioxide (SnO2 ) is an n-type semiconductor and has useful characteristics of high transmittance, excellent electrical properties, and chemical stability. Accordingly, it is widely used in a variety of fields, such as a gas sensor, photocatalyst, optoelectronics, and solar cell. In this study, SnO2 films are deposited by thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) at 180°C using Tetrakis(dimethylamino)tin and water. A couple of 5.9, 7.4 and 10.1nm-thick SnO2 films are grown on SiO2 /Si substrate and then each film is annealed at 400°C in oxygen atmosphere. Current transport of SnO2 films are analyzed by measuring current – voltage characteristics from room temperature to 150°C. It is concluded that electrical property of SnO2 film is concurrently affected by its semiconducting nature and oxidative adsorption on the surface.

Gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) is one of the lanthanide rare-earth oxides, which has been extensively studied due to its versatile functionalities, such as a high permittivity, reactivity with moisture, and ionic conductivity, etc. In this work, GdOx thin film was grown by atomic layer deposition using cyclopentadienyl (Cp)-based Gd precursor and water. As-grown GdOx film was amorphous and had a sub-stoichiometric (x ~ 1.2) composition with a uniform elemental depth profile. ~3 nm-thick GdOx thin film could modify the hydrophilic Si substrate into hydrophobic surface with water wetting angle of 70°. Wetting and electrical test revealed that the growth temperature affects the hydrophobicity and electrical strength of the as-grown GdOx film.
