This paper is a discussion of the theoretical conceptualization of past landscapes and the limitations of archaeology in providing objectivistic interpretations. Analyzing a case study of the Dewil Valley landscape I will argue that the sciences about the past emerged based on the “Western” research paradigm. Therefore, local ontologies are often overlooked in archaeological narratives. In this article, I will present the ontologies of the indigenous Tagbanua people, contemporary beliefs related to the landscape, and theoretical approaches presented by researchers. I will argue that ontology can be complex and ambivalent, and that archaeological sources do not always indicate these dynamics.

We formulate a certain subtheory of Ishimoto’s [1] quantifier-free fragment of Leśniewski’s ontology, and show that Ishimoto’s theory can be reconstructed in it. Using an epimorphism theorem we prove that our theory is complete with respect to a suitable set-theoretic interpretation. Furthermore, we introduce the name constant 1 (which corresponds to the universal name ‘object’) and we prove its adequacy with respect to the set-theoretic interpretation (again using an epimorphism theorem). Ishimoto’s theory enriched by the constant 1 is also reconstructed in our formalism with into which 1 has been introduced. Finally we examine for both our theories their quantifier extensions and their connections with Leśniewski’s classical quantified ontology.

Nowadays, with growing use of location-aware, wirelessly connected, mobile devices, we can easily capture trajectories of mobile objects. To exploit these raw trajectories, we need to enhance them with semantic information. Several research fields are currently focusing on semantic trajectories to support inferences and queries to help users validate and discover more knowledge about mobile objects. The inference mechanism is needed for queries on semantic trajectories connected to other sources of information. Time and space knowledge are fundamental sources of information used by the inference operation on semantic trajectories. This article discusses new approach for inference mechanisms on semantic trajectories. The proposed solution is based on an ontological approach for modelling semantic trajectories integrating time concepts and rules. We present a case study with experiments, optimization and evaluation to show the complexity of inference and queries. Then, we introduce a refinement algorithm based on temporal neighbour to enhance temporal inference. The results show the positive impact of our propos al on reducing the complexity of the inference mechanism.

Opis:
Distinguishing between a relational and participative ontology and highlighting the last like a paradigm of our time, the author shows how Luther uses both types of ontology for the explication of justification and how both express the same concept in different ways. The participative paradigm explains justification through the union between Christ and the believer and the following communicatio idiomatum. The author underlines that this is not a personal union, but that Christ and the believer become one body and that this union doesn’t change human nature but giving a person a new direction. The article closes with some ecumenical considerations of the participative ontology.

Automatic communication can help reduce errors in communication between navigators, and, consequently, increase the level of navigation safety. This article reviews some methods for the development of an ontology and looks into processes for communication at sea. Three basic elements of ontology can be distinguished: navigational information, communication and interface. The possibility of applying these methods for the construction of ontology was analyzed for a system of automatic communication at sea.

This article describes a proposition of knowledge organization for the purpose of reasoning using an upper-ontology. It presents a model of integrated ontologies architecture which consists of a domain ontologies layer with instances, a shared upper-ontology layer with additional rules and a layer of ontologies mapping concrete domain ontologies with the upper-ontology. Thanks to the upper-ontology, new facts were concluded from domain ontologies during the reasoning process. A practical realization proposition is given as well. It is based on some popular Semantic Web technologies and tools, such as OWL, SWRL, nRQL, Protege and Racer.

Opis:
The purpose of Information Extraction (IE) is extracting information from unstructured, or semi structured machine readable documents by automatic means. Generally this means dealing with human language texts using natural language processing (NLP) techniques. Recently on the market of IE systems a new player emerged. Ontology-Based IE (OBIE) idea consequently gains more and more supporters. In this approach a crucial role in the IE process is played by ontology (formal representation of the knowledge by a set of concepts within a domain and the relationships between those concepts). Using Ontology as one of the IE tools makes OBIE very convenient approach for gathering information that can be later on used in construction of Semantic Web. In this paper I will explain the idea of OBIE with its fl aws and advantages. I will try not only to provide theoretical approach, but also to review current trends in this fi eld. This will be done to point out some common architecture in currently used systems and in the end classify them based on diff erent factors depending on their usability in real life application. As a conclusion an attempt to identify possible trends and directions in this fi eld will be made.

The author starts from the assumption that Martin Luther did not want to deny the importance of ontology (and metaphysics) for theology, but rather to regulate the meaning and use of the categories and main ontological concepts/terms in the perspective of the novum of God’s Revelation in Jesus Christ, (a novum) witnessed by the Holy Scripture as the origin of a being renewed through faith. By examining some passages of his Lectures on Romans (1515–1516), the article highlights the presence of some significant “ontological signals” of the reformer’s thought, in particular those that intend to express the being of the believer with concepts like “Exchange of Forms,” creatio ex nihilo, transitus and actus/motus. Furthermore, it shows that Luther understands these concepts in a relational key, that is, he considers the relationship between the triune Creator and His creature as absolutely essential for the understanding of the person’s being; a relationship that on the one hand is already given – and ontologically will never be interrupted – through every single act of creation (i.e. with the birth of every human being), and on the other hand is being implemented through the gift of faith in Christ, understood as a relationship of trusting acceptance of the triune Creator’s will of communion.

This article explores the use of ontology for semi-automatic marine vessel navigation and ship-to-ship communication to mitigate collision risk. Semi-automatic vessel communication is a step towards automatic communication for autonomous ships. Examples of how such communication can be used is discussed, based on a comprehensive analysis of selected marine collisions, with particular attention to the communication conducted on ships. The effectiveness of such communication was assessed and compared. The suggested solutions are based on the review of official reports from accident investigations. The novelties of this work include original ontologies and interfaces. Through this work, it could be possible to fully automate communication processes between ships. In future work, the research results in this work will be used to create a system of automatic communications for manned and autonomous vessels.

Zeno’s arguments are generally regarded as ingenious but downright unsound paradoxes, worth of attention mainly to disclose why they go wrong or, alternatively, to recognise them as clever, even if crude, anticipations of modern views on the space, the infinite or the quantum view of matter. In either case, the arguments lose any connection with the scientific and philosophical problems of Zeno’s own time and environment. In the present paper, I argue that it is possible to make sense of Zeno’s arguments if we recognise that Zeno was indeed a close follower of Parmenides, who wanted to show that, if the plurality of beings existed, then various absurd consequences would follow. He intended to highlight the compact and inarticulate nature of the being, and the human character of the system of world partitions producing the entities and the objects on which our knowledge is based.
