Opis:
Emulsion flow through porous structure is used in many processes in the field of chemical engineering. Good examples of practical applications are Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniques, soil remediation and treatment of oily wastewater. The emulsion transport in through porous media is not easy to describe, due to rheological behavior of emulsions and porous structure properties. In case of emulsified system flow through porous bed it is possible to observe the retention of oil on porous structure, and reduction of permeability of bed. In the presented study, we tried to investigate the influence of porous bed parameters on oil-in-water emulsion behavior during its flow and elution from porous structure. In experiments we used porous beds with varied particle size range and with different lengths. We measured pressure drop and related permeability changes in time. The turbidimetric and microscopic analysis that we conducted allowed us to check how concentration of emulsion changed during its flow and elution from porous structure.

Crude oil and its derivatives migration in porous structure are important aspects of chemical engineering, since they are vital for processes such as oil extraction and soil remediation. Understanding the multiphase flow in porous rocks is necessary for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) and can lead to this process intensification. In methods of oil extraction such as water flooding or polymer flooding liquids are pumped with high pressure to increase the sweeping efficiency of medium. Thus, the knowledge in this field is important for all people engaged in this process. Oil and its derivatives transport in porous structure occurs also during ground leaching techniques used in soil remediation after emergency release of these liquids. Therefore the research in field of transport in porous media are necessary to conduct this process efficiently. The aim of the experiment was to check the sweeping ratio of paraffin from porous structure for different volumetric flow of leaching liquid. We also measured pressure at the inlet to bed, which allowed us to follow the stages during elution process. To analyze concentration in obtained samples we used TurbiscanLab® device.

Emulsions are interesting dispersed systems that are necessary for a number of technological processes. Their flow through porous structures have many applications in the field of chemical engineering. Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniques, soil remediation and various treatment methods of oily wastewater are good examples of emulsion flow in porous structure. The phenomenon of dispersed system flow through porous media is not easy to describe, mainly because of rheological behavior of emulsions and porous structure properties. During two phase flow of oil and water through porous bed it is possible to observe the interception of oil to porous structure, as well as filtration of oil in pores. In this study, we tried to examine the influence of the fraction size as well as migration process history on permeability of porous bed.

Opis:
Oil pollutants in the natural water masses – especially in the seawater column – can be found in two forms, namely as dissolved oil or as dispersed one. With a broad set of methods, for studying the complex structure of petroleum products, due to the ability of petroleum products to absorb UV-light, absorbance spectra could be a relevant indicator to oil identification in aquatic environment and could support methods provided by the fluorescence technique. The intention of the study described in this article is to characterise the absorption properties of lubricate oil possible to found in the marine environment. Two types of oil as the representative of lubricate oils using in the ship engines are considered. One form of oil possible to found in the marine environment – oil-in-water emulsion was taken into account for analysis. Dispersed in water lubricate oil samples were prepared for several oil concentration for each type of oil. Spectrofluorometer Aqualog Horiba was used to register the absorbance spectra of oils. Based on the Lambert-Beer law the absorbance spectra were derived and specific parameter – absorption coefficient – for each wavelength of excitation, in the range 240-600 nm, was determined. Obtained results indicate decreasing of the oil absorbance value when excitation wavelength increases. Moreover, basing on the absorbance spectra it could be concluded that the main maximum for this kind of oils is located below 240 nm. However, in the considered range of excitation wavelength small flat peak, centred about 265 nm for both types of oils, was detected. Therefore one could conclude that absorbance of oils could be used as the indicator to detect of oil pollution in the natural environment omitting the labour intensive chemical methodology.

In the article, the characteristic of crude oil ‘Petrobaltic’ potentially present in the Baltic Sea water masses is considered in relation to the protection of marine environment. The main spectroscopic method to characterize various oils (crudes and refinery products like fuels and lubricating oils) is fluorescence. However, the absorbance measurements of oils are necessary due to the partial overlapping the spectra of natural seawater components and oil substances. Therefore, properties of crude oil are considered to expand the basis of spectroscopic properties of oils – typical marine organic pollutants – based on absorption measurements. Oils potentially found in the marine environment are, in addition to surface forms, also in-depth ones as oil-in-water emulsion. Therefore, in the article crude oil as oil-in-water emulsion form is considered. As a solvent demineralised water with salinity, corresponding to Baltic Sea salinity was used. Several concentrations of dispersed crude oil were prepared. The absorbance spectra in the UV and visual range of the light in the range from 240 to 600 nm, for each prepared samples are discussed. Based on the Lambert-Beer law for each wavelength of excitation, in the range 240-600 nm, the specific parameter absorption coefficient was determined. Obtained results indicate the rapid decreasing of the absorbance for this kind of oil in the wavelength range from 240 nm to 420 nm. However, in the shape of absorbance spectra is observed the characteristic wide and flat peak located at 260 nm for excitation wavelength, which could be a specific point for this kind of oil.

Opis:
Significant amounts of crude oil transported from offshore fields to the refineries using tankers or pipelines, demand increased control of seawater pollution. Tanker accidents resulting in oil spills drive much attention, as they influence local marine life and coastal industry. However, the most significant annual amount of crude oil enters the sea in the form of oilin- water emulsion as a result of standard tanker operations, offshore oil extraction and daily work of refineries. Many branches of science are challenged to provide new methods for oil detection, less expensive, more sensitive and more accurate. Remote satellite or airborne detection of large oil spills is possible using joint techniques as microwave radars, ultraviolet laser fluorosensors and infrared radars. Some methods are capable to deal with oil streaks detection and estimation of oil thickness. Although there is currently, no method to detect small concentration of oil droplets dispersed in seawater. Oil droplets become additional absorbents and attenuators in water body. They significantly change seawater inherent optical properties, which imply the change of apparent optical properties, detectable using remote sensing techniques. To enable remote optical detection of oil-in-water emulsion, a study of optical properties of two types of crude oil was conducted. Radiative transfer theory was applied to quantify the contribution of oil emulsion to remote sensing reflectance (Rrs). Spectra of Rrs from in situ measurements in Baltic Sea were compared to Rrs spectra of seawater polluted by 1 ppm of crude oil emulsion, collected using radiative transfer simulation. The light crude oil caused a 9-10% increase of Rrs while the heavy one reduced Rrs up to 30% (model accuracy stayed within 5% for considered spectral range). Results are discussed concerning their application to shipboard and offshore oil content detection.

Development of industry and trade in the last few decades caused a huge increase in the pollution of the world's oceans. Substantial contributors to marine pollution come with the rivers from land-based sources including the by products of industry, run-off from agriculture activities such as biocides as well as effluents from urban areas. Moreover, a significant amount of marine pollution is caused by shipping and maritime activities. The operation of ship plants gives a real possibility for engine oils and fuels to reach the marine environment. Discharge waters contain a certain amount of petroleum derivatives in the form of dispersed droplets (oil-in-water emulsion). The presence of oil emulsion cause measurable changes in the optical properties of seawater. It is conceptually possible to detect these changes using a standard radiance or irradiance reflectance meter. Hence, a set of radiative transfer simulation has been carried out. This paper presents a computed photon trace simulation based on the Monte Carlo code, applied to the marine environment. The results are presented as reflectance spectra for the models of Baltic Sea and ocean water both pure and polluted by oil emulsion. It is shown that even small amounts of petroleum pollution raise the values of irradiance reflectance and cause a spectral shift by certain conditions. A possibility for remote evaluation of oil pollution is discussed as well as the perspective for improving the interpretation of shipboard and offshore light field analyses.

The purpose of this study was the evaluation of the physical stability of low-fat oil-in-water model emulsions containing oleogels based on ethyl cellulose), compared to emulsions with anhydrous milk fat. The oleogels were prepared using rapeseed oil with ethyl cellulose at the level of 4.5, 5.0, 5.5 or 6.0% w/w. The O/W emulsions (30/70 w/w) were stabilized by guar gum (0.6% w/w) and soy lecithin (5.0% w/w). The physical properties of oleogels and anhydrous milk fat (centrifugal stability, spreadability/penetration test), rheology and the physical stability of the emulsions (MS-DWS method, centrifugal/thermal stability) were determined, a storage test of the emulsions (CSA method, LUMiSizer) was also conducted. It was demonstrated that ethyl cellulose is an effective edible oil structuring agent. The increase in ethyl cellulose content enhanced the centrifugal stability and hardness of the oleogels. As a result of a microrheology analysis, it was found that the emulsion with anhydrous milk fat had the most elastic strength, macroscopic viscosity and the highest solids content. All emulsions demonstrated high centrifugal/ thermal stability. A higher temperature and extended storage time caused a reduction in the stability of all emulsions and increased the velocity of particle migrations. The ethyl cellulose-oleogels are potential fat phases for stable O/W emulsions, which could be used as a vegan alternative to traditional products based on animal components.

Opis:
Microspheres (MS) made of biostable polymer, namely polystyrene, have been used as substrates for cell culture enabling rapid cell expansion in dynamic conditions. However, due to non-resorbability, polystyrene (PS) MS when repopulated with cells cannot be directly used in tissue engineering. Our concept was to produce MS from resorbable polymer – poly(L-lactide- -co-glycolide) (PLGA) as a support for adherent cells, e.g. osteoblasts. We hypothesize that such MS can be applied to the injured site to act as cell carriers or as modules for modular tissue engineering (MTE). In this article, we present the results of optimizing the PLGA MS manufacturing conditions via oil-in-water emulsification. Due to such a technique, MS with the required size, size distribution and properties suitable for cell culturing can be obtained. Three parameters of the oil-in-water emulsification were examined: the stirring speed of a water phase during MS manufacturing, the surfactant concentration, i.e. poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in a water phase and concentration of PLGA in dichloromethane (DCM) as an oil phase. The results proved that the 7.5% PLGA concentration in DCM solution as an oil phase, the 0.5-2% concentration of PVA solution as a water phase and the stirring speed of water phase of 1000 rpm provided MS with the 160 μm mean diameter, which is suitable for cell culture. Moreover, the developed sieving and cleaning procedures were efficient to collect MS with the mean diameter of 280 μm, the more coherent size distribution and the ability to sink in the cell culture medium. The presence on the bottom of cell culture wells is crucial for MTE.

The goal of this article was to review the literature which discusses the problem of oily wastewater purification by membrane filtration. The authors focused on membranes containing zirconium compounds, mainly ZrO2, used in pressure driven membrane processes. The efficiency of the oil removal processes for various membranes (ceramic and composite), usually above 95% for the oil contaminated sewage, was compared. The influence of zirconium compounds on the properties of ceramic membranes was also discussed. The methods of producing ceramic membranes have been briefly characterized as well. Ceramic membranes are usually obtained by sol-gel technique but also by isostatic compression, reverse phase technique, or hydrothermal crystallization. Ceramic membranes are formed with zirconia, which cause an increase in filtration efficiency by improvement of hydrophilic properties of the membrane. Moreover, the addition of ZrO2 results in increased chemical and hydrothermal membrane stability. The efficiency of the filtration processes using the presented membranes was high, suggesting that membrane filtration processes are highly effective purification methods.

Opis:
The emulsion explosive is one of the important industrial explosives. The structural stability of the water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion matrix of an emulsion ex plosive determines the reliability of its initiation, safety and detonation performance. It is known that the emulsifier is one of the most important factors affecting W/O structural stability. In this paper, several emulsifiers with the functionalities of imide, amide, ester, salt, and sorbin monooleate (SMO) were selected. From the perspective of the rheological properties, the effects of the emulsifier structure and its functionality on the viscosity and visco-elastic properties of the emulsion matrix were analyzed and researched. The results show that emulsifiers with imide/amide functionality and their corresponding emulsion matrixes have higher viscosity at normal temperatures and better fluidity at high temperatures than those of the others. The linear visco-elastic region (LVR) for emulsion matrixes containing these emulsifiers is wider than that of the others. The effect of a change in ambient temperature on the viscosity for a complex emulsifier is small. The emulsion matrix containing the emulsifier named LZ2727B is the most stable, followed by the emulsifier named LZ2727D. This conclusion is consistent with the conclusions from tension tests and from high and low temperature cycling experiments. From the emulsifiers studied in this paper, LZ2727B and LZ2727D emulsifiers are very suitable for manufacturing packaged emulsion explosives. On the other hand emulsifiers based on SMO functionalities, named LZ2731 and LZ2735, are the best choices for manufacturing bulk emulsion explosives.

Conventional membranes used in the process of premix membrane emulsification are prone to fouling, especially when biopolymers are employed as surfactants. An alternative to conventional membranes are dynamic membranes consisting of an unconsolidated porous medium. Dynamic membranes have the advantage of enabling easy cleaning of the inside of the pores. Experimental research carried out to date has focused on the application of hydrophilic dynamic membranes composed of glass microbeads for producing o/w emulsions. The aims of this study were to determine the efficiency of droplet size reduction in a w/o emulsion when passed through a dynamic hydrophobic membrane consisting of a bed of irregular polymer particles, and to assess the effect of multiple membrane passes on the properties of the w/o emulsion. The dynamic membranes evaluated in the tests were found to reduce the diameters of premix droplets when an appropriate pressure level was reached. Higher bed porosity was associated with greater fluxes achieved across the packed bed, but the resulting emulsions were less homogeneous. Multiple passes of the emulsion through the dynamic polypropylene membrane led to a further reduction in droplet size, but it was accompanied by a decline in emulsion homogeneity.

The article describes the flow rates of mineral oil and water flowing, as working media, through the commutation unit of a hydraulic satellite motor. It is demonstrated that geometrical dimensions of commutation unit clearances change as a function of the machine shaft rotation angle. Methods for measuring the rate of this flow and the pressure in the working chamber are presented. The results of pressure measurements in the working chamber during the transition from the filling cycle to the emptying cycle are included. The pressure in the motor’s working chamber changes linearly as a function of the shaft rotation angle, which has a significant effect on the leakage in the commutation unit clearances. The paper presents new mathematical formulas in the form: Q=f(Δpγ) to calculate the flow rate of water and mineral oil in the commutation unit clearances. The γ factor is described as a function of fluid viscosity and clearance length (the motor shaft rotation angle). The coefficients used in these formulas were determined based on the results of laboratory tests of a motor supplied with water and mineral oil.
