Opis:
The paper investigates the dynamics of speech rhythm in Polish learners of English and, specifically, how rhythm measurements revealing durational characteristics of vocalic and consonantal intervals through the measures (%V, ΔV, ΔC, VarcoV, VarcoC and nPVI) change along the process of second language acquisition as a result of language experience and phonetic training, and influence rhythmic characteristics of L2 English. The data used for the analysis come from 30 Polish first-year students of the University of Łódź recorded reading two texts (English and Polish) during two recording sessions separated by a 7-month period of language studies and compared to the data obtained from the recordings of native speakers of English. The experiment aims at verifying whether the participants achieve progress in the rhythm measure scores under the influence of language experience and phonetic training, as it has already been confirmed that general proficiency of non-native speakers of English is a key factor contributing to the successful production of rhythmic patterns in English (Waniek-Klimczak 2009, Roach 2002). The results have shown no substantial and consistent progress for the whole group and across all the measures. Statistical tests, however, have revealed significant changes in the subjects' performance with respect to the vocalic measures ΔV and VarcoV. This may reflect the effect of the type of phonetic training the students are offered, which is segment-based with particular emphasis on vowels.

Opis:
Alien brambles (Rubus, Rosaceae) generate significant ecological and nature conservational threats worldwide, however, the European flora and vegetation is not seriously affected by their impacts. In this study, I report on the distribution and habitats of alien brambles in Hungary, on the basis of comprehensive field studies and complete herbarium revision. The first introduction of a non-native species of bramble (R. phoenicolasius) was reported in 1999 in the country. R. armeniacus was first recognized in 2014 (but it had been present probably decades earlier). It typically occurs in forest-poor landscapes, in regions with larger closed forests it is mainly confined to plantations, but few occurrences in nature-like stand are also found. The occur- rences in the forest steppe region indicate its drought tolerance; besides, it is the only bramble species present in the areas of typical forest-steppe climate. The species is obviously advancing (with more than 100 localities altogether) and constitutes an actual threat for the diversity and structure of fringes and wooded grassland mosaics in drier regions. Two new casual aliens, R. laciniatus and R. occidentalis, are reported here for the first time for Hungary. Another two species, R. odoratus and R. xanthocarpus, are known only from cultivation.

Polish listeners’ perception of different types of errors in non-native speech was studied with a focus on segmental and stress-placement errors. The stimuli consisted of the speech produced by Polish learners of Russian, Czech, and Spanish origins. The results which were obtained suggest that segmental errors (i.e., errors related to the pronunciation of segments) influence the foreignaccentedness perceived by Polish listeners significantly more than stress-placement errors. That is probably due to stress-deafness experienced by native speakers of Polish. While stress-placement errors resulted in relatively low scores in terms of foreignaccentedness, the ratings for segmental errors depended on the L1 group of the speakers. Segmental errors produced by speakers of Spanish were rated as the most foreign-sounding, followed by Czech and Russian. One possible explanation is that it was caused by the sound systems of Russian, Czech, and Polish being pretty similar, while the Spanish sound system is somewhat different.

Proteins with a non-trivial topological structure are currently well recognized, while a knotted protein chain represents a new motif in protein three dimensional folds. Recent comprehensive analysis of the Protein Data Base shows that knotted proteins represent 1.5% of known protein structures. Determination of a free energy landscape of knotted proteins, and its understanding provides a serious challenge for both experimentalists and theoreticians. Moreover the role of a knot for biological activity of protein still remains elusive. In this work we study the smallest knotted proteins ( PDB code 2efv) to understand/investigate their free energy landscape, by means of extensive molecular dynamics simulations. We explore the dependence of the thermodynamics, kinetics and protein folding pathways on the native-likes contact maps and on the length of the chain. We analyze two sets of native-like contacts , which differ by a number of long range interactions, and we consider the 2efv protein with two different lengths of its C-terminus end. We identify the subset of native contacts sufficient to explore the entire free energy landscape. Then, we analyze the influence of the remaining set of native contacts – we show that the set of additional contacts may enhance folding kinetics, and that it has an influence on folding pathways.

The present study aims to investigate the use of discourse markers (DMs) in non-native (Croatian) EFL teachers´ talk with primary and secondary school students. The study concentrates on the occurrences and frequencies of DMs, but it also provides an account of the function distribution of the three most frequently used DMs (ok, so, and). The quantitative and qualitative analyses of the recorded transcriptions reveal that the teachers use a variety of DMs, almost exclusively the ones typical of classroom management and classroom discourse organization, with no significant differences in the patterns of DM use with the primary and secondary school students. The DMs fulfill a number of structural and interpersonal functions mainly aimed at providing coherent and stimulating classroom discourse. The findings of this study might contribute to raising awareness of the diversified functions of DMs, which could facilitate non-native EFL teachers´ overall lesson organization and structuring of particular teaching segments.

This article explores the potential offered by complexity theories for understanding language learners’ sense of self and attempts to show how the self might usefully be conceived of as a complex dynamic system. Rather than presenting empirical findings, the article discusses existent research on the self and aims at outlining a conceptual perspective that may inform future studies into the self and possibly other individual learner differences. The article concludes by critically considering the merits of a complexity perspective but also reflecting on the challenges it poses for research.

Abe (2010) argues that the Negotiation of Form (NF) instruction exerts positive effects on learning of connected speech by Japanese learners of English, finding that the progres achieved with NF was more significant than for the traditional treatment. The study reported here seeks to uncover the acquisitional value of NF in a Polish classroom. The study hypothesizes that NF, in comparison with the deductive teaching method, effectively promotes learning of assimilation, elision and weak forms. The hypothesis was tested by investigating production and perception of 50 Polish students of English. As for evaluating the effects of the two types of instructions, a classic pretest-posttest design was used. With regard to methodology, acoustic analysis was performed. The results demonstrate that in general, NF proved more effective than NNF. With regard to individual processes of connected speech, NF was more effective in production, whereas no such effect was found for perception.

This paper examined the hypothesis that Thai EFL students’ positive attitudes toward their non-native English accented speech could be promoted by the use of University of Iowa’s Sounds of American English website, known as the “number 1 phonetics website”. Fifty-two undergraduate students in the field of sciences participated in the investigation, which took place at two different stages. The findings of both stages mirrored non-native-like identity they perceptually obtained and native-like identity they socially aspired to possess. The findings of the second stage confirmed the hypothesis to some extent because of their synchronous feelings of slightly decreased embarrassment and increased pride and offer two insightful directions for EFL teachers. Firstly, irrespective of students’ actual English accented speech, there is a need to promote their positive attitudes toward their own accent at an early age. Secondly, helping them understand that speaking intelligibly is more important than sounding like a native speaker.

The discussion begins by indicating the strengths and weaknesses of teaching Polish as a non-native language today while focussing on how approaches to individual issues have changed. The main body of the article, devoted to the achievements of, and development prospects for, teaching Polish as a non-native language, is divided into three parts. The first includes remarks on the necessity to engage in further research into such subdisciplines of teaching Polish as a non-native language as the acquisition of Polish as a foreign and a second language, the preparation and evaluation of materials for teaching Polish as a non-native language, computer-aided teaching PFL, the reality of Polish studies in different countries and world regions, and the history of teaching Polish as a foreign language. The second part applies to the development of teaching Polish as a heritage and second language within the context of its development as a foreign language. The third part refers to people working for the growth of teaching Polish as a non-native language, and offers a discussion of the outcomes of a study by Grażyna Zarzycka of the discourse community of researchers and instructors of Polish as a non-native language and the discourse of teaching Polish as a non-native language itself.

Część trzecia artykułu odnosi się do ludzi pracujących na rzecz glottodydaktyki polonistycznej i przynosi omówienie rezultatów badań G. The paper explores the origin of a foreign accent in non-native speech. Deviations from the pronun¬ciation norm in the articulation of English vowels and consonants by Ukrainian learners of English form a dynamic system of specific features correlating with the degree of foreign language competence. Phonetic interference of native language production and perception habits into the foreign language performance has its psychological and linguistic reasons. Divergence of phonological and phonetic features of native and foreign languages, automated articulations transferred into the foreign speech shape the specific character of the foreign accent. The contrastive analysis of the articulatory bases of English and Ukrainian as well as the analysis of actual phonetic deviations enabled to single out salient features of Ukrainian English accent.

Opis:
W artykule zaprezentowano dane empiryczne dotyczące percepcji angielszczyzny Polaków przez trzy grupy rodzinnych użytkowników z Wysp Brytyjskich (Anglików, Irlandczyków i Szkotów).
The article presents empirical data on the perception of Polish-accented English by three groups of native listeners from the British Isles (the English, the Irish and the Scottish). The main aim of the study is to explore to what extent informants’ evaluative judgements are conditioned by non-linguistic factors such as age, gender, education, familiarity with Polish-accented English and the frequency of interaction with Poles. The listeners rate the samples of Polish-accented English on two parameters, i.e. foreign accentedness and irritation they evoke. The analysis has revealed that respondents’ age and gender do not influence their judgments (the differences are not statistically significant). Education, prior experience with Polish-accented English and the frequency of interaction with Poles, on the other hand, exert influence on how the speakers are rated.
