Opis:
An important paper describing the Standards of the Polish Ultrasound Society regarding the assessment of portal and hepatic vasculature was published in the Journal of Ultrasonography. Due to the multiplicity of morphological and hemodynamic data required, the time needed to obtain these data and the legal responsibility of doctors for the results, there seems to be a need to determine a clear range of the assessed parameters depending on the reference level of a given healthcare facility. Therefore, the aim of the paper was to present the EFSUMB recommendations on the range of the evaluated ultrasonographic parameters in portal hypertension depending on the reference level. European healthcare institutions are characterized by a clear three-level reference network. Due to the lack of a similar division in Poland, we propose our own classification of the competence of medical entities. The first reference level: ultrasound assessments in a primary health care setting (performed by GPs, emergency physicians, non-specialist private practice physicians, non-specialist practice physicians); at least one mid-class ultrasound scanner with pulsed and color Doppler options, equipped with convex 3–5 MHz and linear 7–12 MHz transducers should be available at physician’s disposal. The second reference level: ultrasound assessments in the hospital setting and specialist outpatient clinics, performed by specialist private practice physicians, radiologists, gastroenterologists and hepatologists; top class (premium) digital ultrasound scanner should be available at physician’s disposal. Third reference level: ultrasound assessments performed in gastroenterology, hepatology and liver surgery departments as well as their specialist outpatient clinics; physicians should use top class digital ultrasound equipment. At every reference level, physicians performing abdominal ultrasound should have the appropriate certification to perform such an assessment or specialize in gastrointestinal diagnosis.
W „Journal of Ultrasonography” została opublikowana ważna praca opisująca standardy badań ultrasonograficznych Polskiego Towarzystwa Ultrasonograficznego dotyczące oceny układu wrotnego i naczyń wątroby. Celem pracy jest więc zaprezentowanie rekomendacji Europejskiej Federacji Towarzystw Ultrasonografii w Medycynie i Biologii określających zakres badanych parametrów ultrasonograficznych dotyczących nadciśnienia wrotnego w odniesieniu do referencyjności ośrodka. Opis:
A pot experiment was conducted to examine whether the morphological and physiological characteristics of some halophytes may be affected by salt stress. For this purpose, a factorial experiment based on randomized complete block design was carried out with three replications. The treatments were some halophytes (Salicornia europaea, Atriplex leucoclada, and Kochia scoparia) and salinity stress levels [Electrical conductivity 0 (Hoagland’s solution), Hoagland’s solution consisting of 100, 200, 300 and 500 mM NaCl]. Among the halophytes tested, Salicornia europaea had significantly higher shoot and root of dry matters compared to the other halophytes in all salt treatments. Salinity stress resulted in an increase in photosynthetic pigments up to 200 mM and thereafter, it decreased in all of the studied plants. Photosynthetic pigments, ranked in a descending order, were high in Kochia scoparia, Salicornia europaea, and Atriplex leucoclada. In addition, salinity stress led to an enhancement in malondialdehyde (MDA) and H2O2. The tolerance of Salicornia europaea under high salinity stress was associated with low MDA and H2O2 contents as well as high contents of photosynthetic pigments. The shoot and root Na+ increased considerably by augmenting the salinity levels in all halophytic plants; however, there was a significant difference among halophytes at higher salinity levels. The shoot K+ decreased by increasing the salinity levels, but K+ partitioning pattern varied among the halophytes. Under saline conditions, the shoot and root Na+/K+ ratio of all halophytes grew. The highest and the lowest of Na+ were observed in Salicornia europaea and Kochia scoparia, respectively. Thus, the Na+/K+ ratio could be considered as an indicator of salt evaluation. Nitrogen, protein content, dry matter digestibility (DMD), and metabolizable energy (ME) were high in Salicornia europaea plants in comparison to other plants at 200–500 mM salinity levels; in contrast, acid detergent fiber (ADF) and netural detergent fiber (NDF) were low. According to the results of this study, the tolerance of halophytes towards NaCl is possibly due to the differences in damage from reactive oxygen species (ROS), especially H2O2, and toxicity to metabolism Na+.

Opis:
The morphological examination of the Slovak Oľšava River channel and valley parameters is based on observation of changes in the troughs’ longitudinal profile. While the relationship between valley and channel parameters has previously been researched, establishment of the diverse conditions in trough formation enables better understanding of the basin/riverbed relationship. Our research is based on field measurements of representative sections of nine segments defined by changes in the longitudinal profile. The field measurements were performed in autumn months during a low water period to ensure the best conditions for repeated measurements. Significantly, as much as 75% asymmetry of the measured flow encourages the assumption of strong tectonic influence on the riverbed formation. While the difference between the assumed continuous changes of measured parameters and the actual measured or evaluated parameters remains a matter of interpretation, the detected anomalies enable interpretation of the parameters’ relationships. The river bed and the valley morphological parameters were evaluated on the model of The Olšava River basin which drains the eastern part of the Košická kotlina Basin (the Toryská pahorkatina Upland). The location of the basin at the foot of the Slanské vrchy Mts. is an important factor in the formation of the river network asymmetries. Both the Neogene contact between the Slanské vrchy Hills neo-volcanites and the Toryská pahorkatina Upland and the neo-tectonics influenced the change in morphological parameters in the valley’s longitudinal and transverse profile and the Oľšava river bed. Our terrain works comprised length and width measurements of the bars, their positions in the river bed, the width and depth of the channel and the type of section riffle. Available maps enabled calculation of the following; ratio of valley height to width, average gradient of the section, stream gradient index, average channel segment slope, the degree of sinuosity and the highest observed correlation between slope, river segment type (0.9576) and the width and type river reach (−0.9089). High correlation coefficient values were recorded for the valley height and width ratio, the type of river section, the water area and the total river bed width and area.

Opis:
Purpose: The paper aims to determine the values of the main morphological characteristics of nanopatterns, which can be considered as the reference for use as surfaces of solar cells. Design/methodology/approach: The article uses an approach based on the definition of reference indicators of nanopatterns for solar cells by analysing the main parameters of solar cells and comparing them with the possible values of morphological parameters. Correlations of pore radius and visible wavelength, porosity and visible range, wavelength of de Broglie, nanopatterned layer thickness and charge carriers diffusion length, etc., are analysed. Compliance verification of morphological characteristics of nanopatterns with the specified criteria was performed on the example of porous silicon layers. Findings: The conducted research allowed to define the basic values of morphological parameters of porous nanopatterns, namely porousness, pore size (effective diameter), the thickness of the porous layer, and form factor. Reference ranges of morphological parameters of nanopatterns formed on the surface of semiconductors for applications in solar cells are established. Research limitations/implications: The article is devoted to the choice of optimal morphological characteristics of porous nanopatterns on the surface of semiconductors for solar cells. However, for solar cells, other types of nanopatterns can also be applied, for which it is also necessary to develop methods for selecting optimal parameters. Moreover, the prospect of research on this topic is to check the intrusion into a certain range of values of real nanopatterns formed on the surface of semiconductors. Practical implications: In the article the methodology allowing to choose optimal values of morphological parameters of nanopatterns for its application for solar cells is considered. Such studies are of great practical importance for the production of high-quality solar cells based on nanopatterned semiconductors. Originality/value: The article for the first time considers the choice of the nanopattern type and the ranges of morphological parameters in terms of quality assurance of the final product - the solar cell. It is determined that it is necessary to take into account such factors as porousness, pore size, thickness of the porous layer and roundness. A range of optimal values is selected for each of the indicators.

Opis:
Hypsometric and bathymetric measurements of the Polish coastal zone, which were carried out since the early 50 ties of the last century, provided a very large amount of empirical material. Standardisation of profile recordings in the Coastal·Zone Databank provided a basis for the determination of the multi-temporal changes of the coast. Comparative analysis of coastal zone profiles is of basic importance in planning coastal protection and in designing coastal defence methods. For this aim morphological elements of the shore (beach and dune) and the nearshore (from waterline seawards) zones were separated, and measurements were made on profiles drawn in identical scale. In the present paper, methods of separating morphological elements and the scope of morphometric measurements on cross-shore profiles are presented. The next parts shall discuss: the methods of analysing morphometric parameters (part II), the methods of determining the erosion/accretion systems (part III), and the use of morphometric analysis in the protection of selected regions of the Polish coast (part IV).
