Opis:
This study investigates Pope Benedict’s visit to Turkey as a global media event. The presentation includes the interaction between the global and the local in mass communication studies. The argument is that this visit makes visible some contradictions such as: East/West, EU/Turkey, Christian/Muslim, Catholic/Orthodox. Before this trip, it was presupposed that these contradictions and stereotypes reinforced by the media were to set the agenda; however, it did not happen to be the case. Instead, the existing frames had been replaced by the new ones, which was called a frame shift in news reporting. The discourse method is used to prove this hypothesis. Data were collected during the trip and the visual materials helped in building our theoretical perspective. The aim is to observe the handling of this media event by Western press. Within this perspective, our sample had been formed by pioneering newspapers: Le Monde, Le Figaro, La Libération, The Guardian, The New York Times, Financial Times, Der Spiegel, BBC on-line and Time (magazine).

Opis:
Social media is playing an increasingly important role in reporting major events happening in the world. However, detecting events from social media is challenging due to the huge magnitude of the data and the complex semantics of the language being processed. This paper proposes MASEED (MapReduce and Semantics Enabled Event Detection), a novel event detection framework that effectively addresses the following problems: 1) traditional data mining paradigms cannot work for big data; 2) data preprocessing requires significant human efforts; 3) domain knowledge must be gained before the detection; 4) semantic interpretation of events is overlooked; 5) detection scenarios are limited to specific domains. In this work, we overcome these challenges by embedding semantic analysis into temporal analysis for capturing the salient aspects of social media data, and parallelizing the detection of potential events using the MapReduce methodology. We evaluate the performance of our method using real Twitter data. The results will demonstrate the proposed system outperforms most of the state-of-the-art methods in terms of accuracy and efficiency.

Opis:
Objectives: The complexity of studying cultural public events as an object of journalism is that they are not real news but specially designed messages that can be part of the strategic plan of the stakeholders. In theoretical research, such type of special events is called media events, or pseudo-events (Boorstin, 1992, 32-37). Newsbreak of the public event grounds not only on information about the present but also about the past (culture memory, collective behavior, etc.). The problem is that the impact of the message of a cultural event depends on the will of elites, such as political, business figures or public activists. People and institutions involved in the field of the organization of the event, journalists as transmitters or interpreters, and it is important to help ordinary consumers not to fall into the trap of the frame of a cultural event, not to be used as manipulative purposes.subjects of production of this message. This issue is aimed to identify markers of cultural public event message transformations that affect mass-media. Material and methods: To conduct research, we use the ontology approach by Allein Badiou and media discourse analysis approach. For analysis, we choose public events, which are based on organized cultural events. Results: Define the four trends of the transformation of public event message in media discourse: increasing, decreasing, splashes of attention, decorative discourse. Conclusions: Shifts of the meanings depend on the ontology of the public event message, its creation, implementation, and perception. In order to prevent manipulative influences, this knowledge helps to develop the productive motivation to a responsible attitude towards information products.

With the increased interest in social media over recent years, the role of information disseminated through avenues such as Twitter has become more widely perceived. This paper examines the mention of stocks on the US markets (NYSE and NASDAQ) by a number of financial micro-bloggers to establish whether their posts are reflected in price movements. The Twitter feeds are selected from syndicated and non-syndicated authors. A substantial number of tweets were linked to the price movements of the mentioned assets and an event study methodology was used to ascertain whether these mentions carry any significant information or whether they are merely noise.

This article discusses issues associated with exclusive rights to broadcast television coverage of sports events, in light of a decision of the President of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (hereafter, the UOKiK President) relating to a long-term licence agreement between the Polish Football Association and Canal+. It describes the special features of a sports event as the subject of licensing rights and discusses the impact of intellectual property issues on assessing whether agreements comply with the law on competition and consumer protection. Emphasis is put on the special role of analysing each case of exclusivity economically, particularly with regard to its long-term market effects and the significance of additional restrictions accompanying exclusivity. Attention is also drawn to the precedential nature of the position of the UOKiK President that media licences can, in justified cases, cover periods of several years.

Opis:
Between March and August 2022, the National Museum in Lublin mounted the first in Poland exhibition of the Polish painter Tamara Lempicka. The number of public who visited it reached 86,667, which made it an event of the highest turn-out in Poland. An attempt to analyse the wonder of Lempicka’s communication success, the unwavering interest in her personality and art, has been made by the Author. This effort was helped through reaching the current carriers of her brand, namely contemporary fashion designers, authors of adverts, films, or literature pieces. The Author analysed the results of the research conducted during the Exhibition, amounting to 1,544 surveys in total. The study’s purpose was to verify public’s satisfaction, locations visitors had come from, source of information on the Exhibition, efficiency of the Museum’s communication endeavours, and the public’s profile. The visitors considered the following to have been the Exhibition’s strongest points (by order of preference); exhibits, topic, layout, narrative, curator’s concept, and the design. Interestingly, when the Exhibition was open to the public and the advertising and informing campaign was being implemented, the administrators of social media observed a significant increase in the number of visitors, The Facebook profile witnessed the increase by 54.8 per cent versus the previous five months, while the Instagram account’s visits grew by as many as 202.6 per cent. Furthermore, also the campaign promoting the event was analysed; it was not limited either to the Internet or external advertising, but was also conducted at the venue where the Exhibition was held. The power of social media was efficiently used and consciously managed by the Exhibition organizers, which substantially contributed to popularizing the project.

Opis:
The art redefinition and new media – FluxusSUMMARYThe present essay seeks to look at the Fluxus group as a phenomenon that largely influenced contemporary culture owing to an unconventional approach to artistic activity and the smooth crossing of boundaries between different art disciplines and life. The main subject of interest within Fluxus was to redefine art and draw on audiovisual technologies, which contributed to the development of the art of new media. For this purpose, the text refers to one of the main representatives and predecessors of video art, Nam June Paik, a Korean-born American artist, who worked creatively both in a team as well as individually. The introduction to the considerations on Fluxus outlines the historical context showing the tendencies and circumstances of the origin of the group. When referring to the most important artists and their accompanying artistic activities, special emphasis was laid on the figure of George Maciunas and the left-wing influences to which he yielded while he constructed the Fluxus program. The next point of presentation is the analysis of the phenomenon from the perspective of explaining its fundamental assumptions and their implementation, the relevance of the Fluxus postulates in the contemporary period and its heritage. The final and key element of the text is the reference to the nineteensixties as a golden decade of technological experiments, in whose context Nam June Paik appeared as an extremely creative visionary and initiator of processes associated with the development of art of new media.
