    The cult of a slim and beautiful body is no longer characteristic only for women. The male body is becoming more frequently subjected to the pressure of modelling. The use of different regimes increasingly intends to fulfil the requirements of attractiveness and physical perfection, also among men and boys. The discourse of disciplining the male body and its expectations also influence socially acceptable ways of performing gender. Employing a qualitative analysis of bodybuilding motivational films’ content, the author points out the key elements of the body project image in such materials. The possibility of identifying bodybuilders with experts in body modification, resulting from the specificity of the discipline, allows one to believe that the regimes and training tools presented by them can influence the perception of the body modelling process by men. The author presents four elements used to develop an image of the male body project – (1) conditions necessary for the project, (2) tools used in the project, (3) ways of controlling and evaluating the project, (4) side effects of the project. Based on them demonstrates how motivational bodybuilding films can affect changing ways of performing masculinity.

    Opis:
    The main purpose of the article is to characterize discourse strategies pertaining to the presentation of the male and female body in modern advertising and to describe how the images of body contribute to the creation or blurring of gender differences. In order to better represent the phenomena that have appeared or intensified in recent decades, theoretical considerations concerning gender and body were presented. The main theoretical framework is Raewyn Connell’s concept of hegemonic masculinity, the article also makes use of other theoretical concepts relevant in the context (e.g. the theories of Michel Foucault, Jean Baudrillard or Erving Goffman). The modern culture of the west, and especially advertising is characterised by two opposite, though non-equivalent trends: on the one hand, there are bodies gendered in the traditional way (male mesomorph body type and a slender female body). On the other hand, the opposite trend is associated with blurring gender differences (e.g. androgynous images). The proliferation of ways of forming male and female bodies, however, does not mean the complete erasure of the differences between the appearance of women and men. On the contrary, the body in advertising is still the main tool for creating these differences.
    Głównym celem artykułu jest scharakteryzowanie strategii dyskursywnych dotyczących przedstawiania ciała męskiego i kobiecego we współczesnych reklamach komercyjnych oraz opisanie, w jaki sposób obrazy ciała pojawiające się w reklamie przyczyniają się do tworzenia bądź zacierania różnic genderowych. W celu lepszego zobrazowania zjawisk, które pojawiły się lub nasiliły w ostatnich dekadach, zostały zaprezentowane rozważania teoretyczne dotyczące płci kulturowej i ciała. Podstawowe ramy teoretyczne stanowi koncepcja męskości hegemonicznej Raewyn Connell, ale w artykule zostały wykorzystane również inne użyteczne w kontekście podjętej problematyki koncepcje teoretyczne (np. poglądy Michela Foucaulta, Jeana Baudrillarda czy Ervinga Goffmana).We współczesnej kulturze Zachodu, a szczególnie w przekazach reklamowych, możemy dostrzec dwie sprzeczne, choć nierównoważne tendencje: z jednej strony mamy do czynienia z upłciowionymi w sposób tradycyjny ciałami (męskie ciało mezomorficzne oraz szczupłe ciało kobiece), a z drugiej tendencję odwrotną, związaną z zacieraniem dystynkcji genderowych (np. wizerunki androgyniczne). Proliferacja sposobów kształtowania ciała męskiego i kobiecego nie oznacza jednak całkowitego zatarcia różnic pomiędzy wyglądem kobiet i mężczyzn, wprost przeciwnie – ciało w reklamie nadal pozostaje głównie narzędziem tworzenia tych różnic.

    In the following paper, the author approaches some of the visual work of two contemporary photographers – Erwin Olaf and Ruven Afanador – in an attempt to see how their work renounces traditional views on masculinity. The photographs chosen for this analysis appear to be a peculiar play with social conventions and expectations related to gender and sexuality. In their work, both Erwin Olaf and Ruven Afanador seem to disrupt and reject the economy of heterosexual desire in favour of a much freer – and unconstrained by propriety – expression of corporeality and sensuality. As a result of such a spectacle of re-creation, the body is redefined not only as a means of expressing performativity (or, the surface onto which it is inscribed), but above all as a medium of becoming which functions as a reservoir of ever-changing meanings.
    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest spojrzenie na wizualną twórczość dwóch współczesnych fotografów – Erwina Olafa i Ruvena Afanadora – z perspektywy studiów queerowych. Z tej perspektywy badawczej twórczość zarówno Erwina Olafa, jak i Ruvena Afanadora jawi się jako swoista gra z konwencjami oraz oczekiwaniami społecznymi związanymi z płcią oraz seksualnością. Szczególne miejsce w tych rekonfiguracjach zajmuje ciało męskie, za pomocą którego Olaf i Afanador zdają się zaburzać ekonomię heteroseksualnego pożądania na rzecz nieskrępowanej kulturowymi ograniczeniami ekspresji cielesności. W konsekwencji takiego spektaklu tworzenia ciało zostaje przewartościowane nie tylko jako środek wyrażania performatywności, ale przede wszystkim jako medium stawania się (becoming) – rezerwuar bezustannie zmieniających się znaczeń.

    The aim of the present study was to determine how often spermiogenesis occurs in young male European bison up to 3 years old. Research was performed on sections of the testes and epididymes collected from 51 male bison aged 2-3 years. The animals were divided into 2 age groups: young males up to 2 years and young males up to 3 years old, with further separation into specimens with or without spermiogenesis. The animals were culled during the autumn-winter seasons in 1994-2008 (after rutting period) in the Bialowieża Primeval Forest. Spermiogenesis in the 2-year-old animals was a rare condition found in 16.7% of cases. However, at the age of 3 years more than half of the individuals examined (53.3%) had spermiogenesis. Young males up to 2 years old with spermiogenesis were characterized by a significantly higher body weight and their right testis also weighed more than the left testis of the animals without spermiogenesis, the difference being on the border of statistical significance. There was no significant differences in the body mass and weight of the left testis between older animals, up to 3 years old, with or without spermiogenesis. However, young males up to 3 years old with spermiogenesis were characterized by a significantly higher weight of the right testis than those without spermiogenesis.

    The article presents anthropological, philosophical and theological foundation of the relationship between male/female identities in the light of the biblical-christian tradition. The first part introduces the concept of the primary reciprocity in Gen 1-2 focusing on affinity and difference between man and woman as well as man and woman’s reciprocal essentiality. The second part pertains to male/female reciprocity according to the “theology of the body” by John Paul II which includes a broad notion of freedom. Lastly, the article describes educational tasks including the nuptiality of human body with regards to Christian personalization. Proposed pedagogical vision involves promoting male and female identities according to their difference and to their common dignity.
    W artykule przedstawiono antropologiczne, filozoficzne i teologiczne podstawy relacji między tożsamością męską/żeńską w świetle tradycji biblijno-chrześcijańskiej. Pierwsza część wprowadza pojęcie wzajemności pierwotnej w Rdz 1-2, skupiając się na powinowactwie i różnicy między mężczyzną i kobietą oraz wzajemnej niezbędności. Druga część dotyczy wzajemności męsko-żeńskiej zgodnie z „teologią ciała” Jana Pawła II, która zawiera szeroko rozumiane pojęcie wolności. W części końcowej artykuł ukazuje zadania edukacyjne uwzględniające naturę ludzkiego ciała w odniesieniu do personalizmu chrześcijańskiego. Proponowana wizja pedagogiczna opiera się na promowaniu tożsamości męskiej i żeńskiej zgodnie z ich różnicą i wspólną godnością.

    The nucleic acid content in different tissues such as brain, liver, kidney & testis of both control and copper sulphate (CuSO4) exposed freshwater fish N. notopterus has been studied. The following observation is made in both control and copper sulphate (CuSO4) exposed fish. The testis contain large amount of DNA in comparison to other tissues. The degree of DNA content in control and copper sulphate (CuSO4) exposed fish testis >liver>brain>kidney. The RNA content also exhibited similar to that of DNA, having higher amount in the testis. The degree of RNA content in control and copper sulphate (Cuso4) exposed fish testis >liver>brain>kidney. The nucleic acid content of tissues get reduced under copper sulphate (CuSO4) exposed in the male freshwater fish N. notopterus indicating copper sulphate as a pollutant effect the nucleic acid content in the tissue.

    The purpose of the article and my purpose as an artist is to demonstrate how my box-assemblage succeeds in countervailing the ‘violence’ of the male gaze through its sanctuaried design and Idoia’s simulacra, relics and memorabilia that make up its fabric. While acknowledging that Idoia embodies my unattainable other, I have come to the point where I have no qualms in equating her with the transcendental. To this effect, the box-assemblage fuses the sacred and the profane, and subjects Idoia’s raw sexuality to a process of transubstantiation whereby the ordinary yearns for the extraordinary. Furthermore, by having her body eroticised and fetishized through fragmentation, a process construed as violent in nature, the artefact roots within itself the notions of Eros and Thanatos. With such attributes, the box-assemblage not only empowers this woman to display herself on her own terms, but questions and disrupts the violent spectatorship and dominance of the male gaze.
    Celem tego artykułu, jak również moim zamysłem artystycznym, jest wykazanie w jaki sposób moje asamblaże przeciwstawiają się przemocy męskiego spojrzenia poprzez swój rezonujący religijnie kształt oraz symulakra Idoi, relikwie i pamiątki, które składają się na ich tkankę. Choć przyznaję, że Idoia uosabia mojego nieosiągalnego Innego, nie waham się odkrywać w niej element transcendentalny. W ten sposób asamblaż łączy sacrum i profanum i podporządkowuje pierwotną seksualność Idoi procesowi przeistoczenia, gdzie to, co zwyczajne tęskni za tym, co wyjątkowe. Dodatkowo, poprzez fragmentację jej ciało staje się erotycznym fetyszem i to, co w naturze utożsamiane jest z przemocą, poprzez dzieło sztuki zaczyna być nośnikiem pojęcia Erosa i Tanatosa. W ten sposób asamblaż daje kobiecie siłę nie tylko w przedstawianiu siebie na własnych warunkach, ale również by przełamać przemoc i dominację męskiego spojrzenia.

    Adult males of Schistocerca gregaria turn yellow when they become sexually mature. This is due to the deposition in the cuticle of a male-specific Yellow Protein (YP), of which the amino acid sequence is known. Yellowing only happens in crowd-reared (gregarious) males, and results from the deposition of a specific ‘Yellow Protein’. If individual males (solitarious) are isolated after the adult emergence, they become sexually mature but they do not turn yellow. On the basis of a partial YP-mRNA sequence, we established a reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay to study the developmental expression of YP in crowd-reared males, isolated-reared males and females. In crowd-reared adult males the transcription of YP gene started from day 5 on, and reached a maximum at day 12. The effects of juvenile hormone (JH), insulin (bovine), corazonin, ecdysone and 20 0H-ecdysone (20E) on the regulation of YP-mRNA synthesis were also investigated. JH made the cuticle turn yellow and, as shown by RT-PCR, YP-mRNA was induced. The effect of 100 μg JHIII was stronger than that of 10 μg. Insulin was only effective in inducing YP-mRNA synthesis at high dose (19 μg) and after more days (18 d). Corazonin and 20E made the cuticle turn black, but no YP-mRNA synthesis was observed. Ecdysone (10 and 100 μg) showed no effect on body coloration and YP-mRNA. Thus, JH was found to be the most potent inducer among the hormones tested.
