Opis:
The light-emitting diode (LED) is an essential component of intelligent street lighting (ISL) systems. An efficient ISL system can not only reduce power consumption by planning LED illuminating time but also reduce maintenance costs through a high degree of automation. In this paper, a buck-boost converter is used to realise composite transmission of power and signals for an ISL system. The power is modulated by the pulse width modulation (PWM) approach, and the switching ripple generated in the PWM process is utilised as the carrier of the signals transmitted between the remote-control centre and the slave nodes. Moreover, the proposed model involves a ‘request to send (RTS)/confirm to send (CTS)’ mechanism to avoid signal conflicts. Compared with the conventional power line communication (PLC) approach, the proposed transmission scheme has the advantages of simple circuit structure and simple system wiring. Additionally, a simulation model built in MATLAB/Simulink proves the designed transmission method has strong anti-noise ability.

Opis:
The probability and severity of accidents at pedestrian crossings strongly depend on vehicles’ speed; hence, drivers’ speed control and awareness of driving conditions are very important. Lighting installations in the transition areas of pedestrian crossings have been set up in Polish cities in recent years to improve the visibility of pedestrian crossings and enhance drives’ awareness while approaching sensitive spots in the road network. A key study focus is to evaluate the influence of additional lighting systems on drivers’ behaviour in terms of travel speed. Drivers’ speed measures were carried out under daytime and nighttime conditions on single carriageways. Speed measurements were performed in free flow driving conditions in the vicinity of zebra crossins located in mid-block segments and at intersection inlets. The analyses conducted have shown an ambiguous influence of lighting installations on drivers’ behaviour. It has been found that drivers approaching pedestrian crossings with additional illumination systems decrease their speed significantly, but average speeds, even reduced, remain over posted speed limits. Moreover, at zebra locations, drivers’ speed under night conditions in some cases was found to be significantly higher than during the day. Based on the results obtained, some recommendations have been made to improve drives’ speed behaviour at pedestrian crosswalks.

Opis:
Most efficient utilization of electrical energy takes place when energy is consumed locally, avoiding its distribution over long distances or costly storage technologies. Finding such applications for renewable energy sources, like wind or solar, is difficult. The main obstacle is the their limited predictability and the mismatch between energy availability and demand. Nowadays the daytime lighting in modern urban architecture causes a considerable electricity consumption. For such applications, there exists an excellent match between energy availability (solar irradiance) and consumption demand (interior illumination). Moreover, the demand can be met with relatively small PV-generators with modern energy efficient lighting technology. In this paper a hybrid lighting system for daytime, using both natural and artificial light, has been proposed. The supply for artificial lighting is provided from photovoltaic (PV) system or the utility grid, when solar irradiance cannot meet the illumination and electricity demand. The paper presents the results of simulation of full year energy savings in a daytime lighting system. The system maintains the indoor illumination level to be equal or higher than required by the norms, using natural sunlight and artificial lighting. The artificial lighting is used only to compensate the deficiencies of sunlight and is powered with autonomous PV-system in the climatic conditions of Central Europe. The PV-system is also equipped with short-term energy storage, based on super capacitor, allowing for only several minute of backup supply. Such storage is used only to mitigate the rapid solar power fluctuations, providing energy from PV supply at more stable power level during the day, but the excess of energy is not fed to the utility grid. The numerical simulation is using the solar irradiance data collected with 5 s time resolution during the whole year 2010 at Lodz University of Technology, in center of Poland.

Lighting influences users’ visual strain and well-being. Therefore creating lighting that ensures visual work conditions do not results in visual fatigue is a preventive activity. The aim of the study was to model different lighting systems for visual display terminal (VDT) work and to determine their influence on users’ visual strain and preferences. The results of the study showed that visual fatigue was lowest for indirect and compound lighting systems. On the other hand, in general, direct lighting realized by “dark-light” luminaires was the most preferred lighting system. Some interesting differences related to age, gender, and VDT work experience were found. On the basis of the obtained results lighting designers can be provided with some guidance.

Opis:
The growing costs of energy and environmental care stimulate the development of technologies reducing the energy usage. In this paper we discuss the case of an intelligent city lighting system which acts towards fitting the actual enyironment needs related to lighting. It is accomplished by performing some actions when an enyironment state ehanges but also by predieting the state ehanges on the basis of data proyided by sensors. The problem complexity requires using formal model of a system enabling a problem decomposition and processing parallelization.

Opis:
The paper presents a design and performance analysis of a photosensor device enabling the measurement of the visible light illuminance. The sensor is designed for use in the light metering matrix of a mobile measurement platform allowing the correct operation of inpavement airport lamps. This kind of control can be required by regulations and must meet the standards defined by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). An important assumption of the solution was to obtain the highest possible speed of a measurement acquisition so that the control process would take place in a relatively short time. The proposed module concept is dedicated to the task of testing the quality of airport lamps, due to the characteristics of the photosensitive elements matching the light beams emitted by luminaries. The device is based on a VTP1220FBH photodiode and an ATmega328P microcontroller, which, in addition to the analogue-to-digital conversion and correction, sends the results back to the master unit via the I²C bus.

Opis:
An emergency escape lighting system based on Low Location Lighting on passenger ships is required to ensure proper visual guidance to allow safe egress routes for evacuation of the ship’s deck, even in very dense smoke. LLL system components must be installed in specific locations of the escape route, as well as exhibiting the required photometric characteristics within a specified time after triggering. The luminance decrease curve for materials used for the surfaces of LLL system components depends on a number of factors, e.g. spectral distribution of light sources and light exposure parameters. Ascertaining the influence of specific factors allows optimization of the proper means of material exposure to achieve the required photometric characteristics. This article presents the normative requirements for LLL systems installed on passenger ships regarding their placement and photometric characteristics. It presents actual working conditions for LLL systems and laboratory test results for two photoluminescent materials, as well as formulating recommendations to ensure proper working conditions for the LLL system.
