Academic reading has gained considerable interest among language theoreticians and practitioners as a key component of generally understood academic literacy competencies. Yet, despite the unquestionable importance of developing advanced reading skills in both L1 and L2 academic settings, a definition of the concept of academic reading is still not easy to formulate. In an attempt to better understand the notion of academic reading, this article first, provides an overview of the goals of academic reading comprehension, with special focus on reading to learn, and then, discusses the relationship of academic reading to other concepts currently employed with reference to academic literacy. The article finishes with some guidelines for L2 reading instruction developed at the academic level.

Multilingualism is intrinsically linked with the European Union. Therefore, many European documents contain recommendations concerning its promotion, especially in the context of education. This paper describes the main axes of the European language policy. It also presents a suggested strategic model of developing plurilingual competence, which is one of the principal objectives of contemporary language teaching. The central point of the proposed model is the acquisition by pupils of the ability to make a conscious inter-language transfer, which requires them to create a set of strategies based on the resources of the language repertoire. This implies directing the didactic activities to the development of the ability to learn and emotional management that accompanies it, which requires the student to adopt a reflective attitude.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the focus of education on creativity achieved by the use of coding (“code to learn”), in view of modern pedagogical theories. Social interactions between young creators are an important factor. The paper describes an initial stage of the research on the phenomenon of the remix of simple computer games created by the community of users in the Scratch environment. It presents selected problems of young creators connected to sharing their own work with other community members: authorship acknowledgement, formal acknowledgement for the first author placed on derived products (games), reactions of the first author to the creative development of their ideas or influence of school grades on the will to share the project. There will be further research on the achievements of the same group of students aged 15 to 16 after a series of lessons concerning creating computer games in the Scratch environment.

The paper presents findings of the IRSE Video Study Physics, a research project that was carried out in the Institute for Research in School Education at the Faculty of Education of Masaryk University in Brno. Physics instruction was analysed in the conceptual framework of opportunities to learn. The sample consisted of 62 lessons of physics taught at various lower-secondary schools in Brno, the Czech Republic. The lessons were video-recorded, transcribed and coded, and the data were analysed with regard to the aspects under investigation. The paper presents findings on: a) organisation of classroom activities; b) sequencing of the teaching process; c) using didactic tools and media; d) using experiments. The results show that lower-secondary physics instruction is teacher-oriented to a great extent, which is indicated by the organisation of classroom activities. Modern media (ICT, audio and video recordings) were scarcely employed: the teachers’ primary didactic tool was the blackboard. The teachers did not employ experiments very often – when an experiment occurred, it tended to be the teacher to carry it out.

Accession of Poland to the European Union induced a variety of changes in different areas of life, including education. A second language was introduced as a compulsory subject in kindergarten and primary school and two compulsory foreign languages in general lower and upper secondary schools. English is the most popular of all languages in all types of schools, regardless of the level of education they represent. Globalization of the English language, the process which can be observed nowadays, has a significant impact on actions taken by schools to popularize learning this language. Therefore, the research was performed with a view to achieving a better understanding of the popularization of English language learning in primary schools in the larger context of a variety of factors. Basing on the analysis of research results, the conclusions reflecting real needs of learners as far as the more effective English language learning is concerned have been drawn. Sharing the research findings with the primary schools which participated in the research will contribute to their practical application.

Der Band enthält die Abstracts ausschließlich in englischer Sprache.
Evolving approaches to the conceptualization of reading have created conducive grounds for rethinking the role of strategic reading in second/foreign language contexts. However, despite a wide recognition of the effectiveness of strategic reading, such critical issues as strategy identification, modelling reading strategy taxonomies, and their implications for establishing principles for actual classroom practice are still being  debated on. This article intends to look more closely at current insights into the strategy dimension of the reading process, which, according to the current author, play an enlightening role in defining the utility of reading strategies in helping second/foreign language learners reach their goals in reading and through reading. Hence, the article mainly focuses on promoting text comprehension, language and reading skills improvement, and content learning from text. The author articulates the need for a better understanding of how the potential effects of strategic text processing can be addressed in L2 reading practice.

Background: The aim of this paper is to examine the relationship between the administration of leadership training programs and trainees’ motivation to learn. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to collect data from junior army leaders in Peninsular Malaysia. Methods: A cross sectional method was employed in this study because it allowed the researchers to integrate the LTP literature, the pilot study and the actual survey as the main procedures to collect data. Beside a purposive sampling technique was used to distribute 300 self-report questionnaires to junior army leaders at the organization and the survey questionnaire data were analyzed using SmartPLS. Results: The results show that the ability of senior administrators to appropriately use a well-designed course content and select the right instructors to teach and facilitate trainees had enhanced trainees’ motivation to learn in the organizational sample. Conclusions: This study tested a conceptual schema developed based on the LTP research literature. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis showed that the instrument used in this study satisfactorily met the standard of validity and reliability analyses. Furthermore, the outcomes of the SmartPLS path model proved that course content and instructors’ roles were important predictors of trainees’ motivation to learn in the organizations.

This paper offers a retrospective narrative review of research on L2 writing strategies and a prospective discussion of potential theoretical and pedagogical relevant lines of inquiry to be explored in future research agendas. The retrospective analysis will synthesize the main trends observed in the conceptualization of writing strategies as well as central directions followed in empirical research in the domain. The prospective discussion tries to advance research agendas on the basis of several observations about L2 writing that are presented as key points to be considered when analyzing existing or thinking about future research in the domain. Special mention will be made of future research avenues centrally concerned with theoretical and empirical questions on the manner in which strategic behavior during writing and during written corrective feedback processing may foster language learning. It will be suggested that following this route can result in interesting and profitable synergies between research on language learning strategies and recent SLA-oriented L2 writing research initiatives on the language learning potential associated with L2 writing.

The learning to learn competence is becoming more and more important, as it enables efficient learning, is developing awareness and planning one‘s own process of learning. With empirical research, we wanted to study some of its aspects in the 4th year (undergraduate) and 1st year students (postgraduate) of the Faculties of Education in Slovenia. To establish the students‘ evaluation of their ways of learning and competence to teach we used a questionnaire. With the use of the research, we established the growth of evaluation of the majority of aspects, which shows that the learning to learn competence is related to a better evaluation of students’ own way of learning and better marks. Reported findings reveal that this competence and its aspects have a great impact on the effectiveness of learning and success of students.

Opis:
Molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations constitute an important tool in the study of nanoscale metallic systems, especially so in the face of the difficulties plaguing their experimental analysis. Main limitations of the MD method stem from the empirical nature of the potentials employed, their functional form which is postulated ad hoc, and its classical nature. The neglect of electronic effects and the unjustified utilization of the potential for system configurations significantly different from those, for which the potential was parametrized makes the results of strictly classical calculations dubious, at least for a certain class of systems. On the other hand, high computational complexity of quantum-based methods, where atomic interactions are described ab initio, prohibits their direct use in the study of systems larger than several tens of atoms. In the last decade, a growing popularity of so-called hybrid (or cross-scaling) methods can be observed, that is, methods which treat the most interesting part of the system with a quantum-based approach, while the remainder is treated classically. Physically sound handshaking between the two methodologies (quantum and classical) within a single simulation constitutes a serious challenge, the majority of difficulties concentrating around the interface between the fragments of the system treated with the two methods. The aforementioned interface is most easily constructed for covalently bonded systems, where the bonds cut by the isolation of the quantum-based region can be saturated by the introduction of specially crafted link-atoms. In metallic systems, however, due to electronic delocalization, this traditional approach cannot be employed. This paper describes a physically sound and adequately efficient computational technique, which allows for the inclusion of results of locally employed quantum-based computations within a molecular-dynamics simulation, for systems described by the many-body Sutton-Chen (SC) potential, used in the study of fcc metals. The proposed technique was developed taking as a point of departure the Learn-on-the-Fly (LOTF) formalism, a recent development itself. The original LOTF approach is only suitable for two- or three-body potentials and is serial in nature, whereas the proposed technique can be used with many-body potentials and is parallel-ready. An implementation of the proposed approach in the form of computer code, which allows for parallel hybrid computations for metallic systems is also described. Finally, results from a set of hybrid simulations of nanoindentation of a copper workmaterial with a hard indenter utilizing the aforementoned technique and computer code is presented, as evidence of its viability.

After regaining independence, different legal systems remaining after the partitioners were in force in the lands of the forming Polish state. Reconstruction of statehood began with a disastrous state of education. The issue of education and the fight against widespread illiteracy was a very important issue both for society and the emerging authorities during the partitions. After regaining independence, the first task of educational authorities was to unify the school system, i.e. to define its organization, tasks, ideological foundations and programs. This process began in 1914, and the implementation of a general obligation to learn began intensively from 1917. However, due to the multitude of problems of the reviving state, including primarily financial, but also due to the lack of staff, buildings or school equipment, they resulted in the fact that general obligation to educate was not fulfilled. This meant that despite the efforts of authorities, the fundamental problem of illiteracy in the Polish society in indicated period was not eliminated.

Background: Present studies recognize that commercial organizations and public organizations have work together to set up national logistic policies for the national development requirements. In order to support this aim, leadership of public sector has planned and implemented training programs to expose latest logistic management strategies and operations to employees. Latest findings from logistic management studies circulated in the 21st century revealed that the willingness of management to support training programs has strongly invoked employees’ motivation to learn creative logistic methods. As a result, this motivation may drive to an enhanced motivation to perform task. Even though this relationship is interesting, the role of motivation to learn as a significant mediating variable has largely been neglected in the logistic management literature. Thus, this situation stimulate the present study to extend the literature by examining the mediating effect of motivation to learn in the relationship between management support in training programs and motivation to perform task. Method: Survey questionnaires were employed to gather data from employees at central government agencies under controlled by the Malaysian federal government. The SmartPLS was used to measure the psychometrics properties of instrument and test the research hypotheses. Result: This study showed that motivation to learn did act as an important mediator of the relationship between management support in training programs and motivation to perform task. Conclusion: The mediating effect of motivation to learn between management support in training programs and motivation to perform task also is consistent and has extended previous logistic management studies published in Western and Asian countries.

Sytuacja ta spowodowała potrzebę zbadania efektu mediacyjnego motywacji do nauki w relacji pomiędzy wspomaganiem zarządzania w programach szkoleniowych i motywacją do realizacji zadań. Wnioski: Efekt mediacyjny motywacji do nauki pomiędzy wspomaganiem zarządzania w programach szkoleniowych i motywacją do realizacji zadań jest spójny i wzbogaca wcześniejsze badania dotyczące zarządzania logistycznego publikowane w krajach zachodnich i azjatyckich.
