JOURNALISM ( CULTURE
LANGUAGE
STYLE)
Opis:
The paper aims to point out some instances of language innovations appearing in written journalism and to comment on their contribution to the culture of present-day language. The data were obtained from the following Czech dailies published between 2000 and 2005: 'Mladá fronta DNES', 'Právo', and 'Lidové noviny'. As written journalistic texts rank among official types of communication, the logical expectation would be for them to employ strictly standard language, with moderately literary ways of expression. However, in practice this is very different. Contemporary journalism is open to language means (mostly lexical) from different stylistic levels. Many of these never establish themselves as permanent components of language. This is especially fortunate in the case of inadequately used, strongly pejorative expressions, which can hardly be considered a positive contribution to language culture.

Opis:
This study focuses on modelling general and individual language change over several decades. A timeline prediction task was used to identify interesting temporal features. Our previous work achieved high accuracy in predicting publication year, using lexical features marked for syntactic context. In this study, we use four feature types (character, word stem, part-of-speech, and word n-grams) to predict publication year, and then use associated models to determine constant and changing features in individual and general language use. We do this for two corpora, one containing texts by two different authors, published over a fifty-year period, and a reference Corpus containing a variety of text types, representing general language style over time, for the same temporal span as the two authors. Our linear regression models achieve good accuracy with the two-author data set, and very good results with the reference corpus, bringing to light interesting features of language change.

The author has investigated a corpus of informal email messages produced by post intermediate Czech learners of English. The method of analysis draws upon Biber & Conrad (2009) employing primarily a qualitative analysis as part of the author´s dissertation. First of all, the paper touches upon such descriptive terms as style, register and genre. Secondly, the paper presents the results of an analysis of genre features including deviations. In the concluding part, the article outlines implications for practice.

Opis:
Many aspects of architecture (style, ornaments, urban planning etc.) are symbolic in nature, resulting in similarity between the art of erecting structures and language understood as the relationship between signifé and signifant.Hence, architecture has its own grammar, semantics and dialectic variants. The grammar is expressed in the context of articulation form and pattern language. The semantics can be found in the relatively more superficial aspects like metaphors likening this branch of art to books or the owners of specific buildings in their appearance or demeanour. Such an approach is shared across centuries and can be found for example in ancient and Victorian texts. Additionally, the message conveyed by buildings and structures might serve as a form of propaganda while many elements like styles, ornaments and locations depend on the ideas expressed by the architects and the founders. This aspect is common to various ideas, beliefs and societies, whether consciously or subconsciously. Moreover, the realisation of different styles of architecture varies depending on the times and the specific needs of the community in which a particular building is erected in the same way language may vary depending on similar factors. Thus, architecture presents the same qualities that are expressed by various dialects.

Opis:
This article examines the increase in frequency of use of the prepositional noun cases in Czech over the last three decades (1990-2019). The author has based his research on the Czech National Corpus where he created five temporally defined subcorpora containing only journalistic texts from the major Czech daily newspapers. Over the period under study, the share of prepositional cases in the total noun tokens has increased from 26.44% to 28.08% (by 1.64%). The share of cases with proper prepositions hasincreased the most, while the number of cases with improper prepositions has increased less. The author has identified developmental trends for specific frequented prepositions. According to the author, the increase in the frequency of prepositional cases in Czech is a phenomenon rooted in the “typological dispositions” of the Czech language. However, he considers the stylistic factor (the desire for more explicit, precise expression) to be a factor of more importance, contributing to the increase in the frequency of prepositional cases. On the other hand, some changes in the frequency of use of specific cases, most notably the observed greater frequency of the accusative (+2.21%), is a purely typologically motivated developmental change.

Opis:
Postgraduate education in Ukraine is a specialized improvement of education and professional training of a person through deepening, expansion and renovation his professional knowledge, skills and abilities or getting another specialty based on previously acquired educational qualification and practical experience. Postgraduate education is carried out by higher educational establishment or by structural subdivisions of higher educational establishment with appropriate accreditation level in the form of training programs or internship. This article devoted to the formal expansion of skills within the resulting profile or retraining. Formation and polishing of the person’s individual style of business communication occurs throughout adult life. Language communicative competence is complex education system, which requires constant improvement. Speaking more than one language involves the formation of a foreign language communicative competence. This problem requires a review of government and universities policy on planning and forming of language communicative competence among students of advanced training courses.

Opis:
Every year selected leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) speak to large audiences for regular devotional meetings at Brigham Young University, a private religious college in Provo, Utah. This study investigates the possibility that a rhetorical analysis of devotional speakers could be an effective way to observe typical language features in English public speaking that would be especially helpful for advanced English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students in improving their comprehension and expression skills. Using published transcripts and cassette tape recordings of these Latter-day Saint discourses, the analysis includes lexical, figurative, syntactic, schematic, tonal, and semantic aspects of each devotional speech. The results suggest that such religious discourses contain language details and rhetorical patterns in English that ESL students could learn to recognize, understand, and use persuasively.

Opis:
While still under the spell of Jacąues Prevert’s intriguingly unsophisticated Alicante, and in relentless pursuit of uncovering novel strategies for creating literary beauty, I decided to subject the poem to a minutę scrutiny in the hope of ferreting out the secret stuff “holy simplicity” is madę of. Much to my surprise, “lurking” behind this sancta simplicitas I fo- und a fine network of complex pattems, each carefully designed to interact with the rema- inder in a flawless manner, thus considerably enhancing the potency of the ensemble. The following are several of the major pattems involved: dichotomous partition into sexuality and spirituality; colour-related symbolism; word play; dual-nature semantic pattem of keywords (signalling interweaving of libido-related and spirit-related zones); interplay of inherent and non-inherent readings of adjectives, of regular and irregular rhymes, or of verses with different-numbered feet (even and odd); effective intermingling of lexemes which synergetically appeal to four human senses. In the second phase, my research was steered away from fathoming the miracle of creating “holy simplicity” towards investigating the sustained toil of recreating it in a diffe- rent language: Romanian. The two subsections devoted to the topie in question submit to the reader Gellu Naum’s translation of Alicante, and the one originating with nonę other than the author of this contribution respectively. A brief comparison of the two renditions has yielded the following points of dissimilarity: a) Naum’s is a true-to-spirit translation, whereas minę has been created with the genius of the target language in mind. Herefrom stem the main contrasts listed below. b) Naum keeps on the fruit (Fr signifier orange, Rom signifierportocala), while I madę so bold as to replace it by the equally exotic mango for reasons specified under 111.2 below (s. also substitution of noptiera (= bedside ta- ble) and dormitory (= bedroom) for masa (Fr table) and pat (Fr lit) respectively. c) Naum completely disregards the pun in linę 4, whereas I did not think twice about slightly modi- fying the rhythmic pattem in order to be able to render the former into Romanian.d) Likewise, Naum translates in utter defiance of the rhyming pattem, whereas to me ob- serving it is a matter of prime importance.Needless to say, I am quite willing to take both the blame and the credit - if any — for the vast array of meanings I took the liberty to read into Prevert’s poem, as well as for the translational licences resorted to in the hope of successfully putting these unique connota- tions across to the reader. The concluding section discusses still a further possibility of recreating Prevert’s Alicante, namely by setting it to musie. In this respect, Chuck Perrin’s rendition has the ad- ded advantage of enhancing its lyricism, while concurrently taking the poem to that ma- gical space hovering above the spiritual.

Opis:
Academic lectures are implemented as a basic genre in developing students’ disciplinary knowledge in higher education settings. Frequently appearing in their traditional monologic form, they tend to be more interactive nowadays, due to the use of a variety of activities that accompany them, including new technologies. With the internationalization of higher education, numerous lecture attendees are now multilingual students learning through the medium of a non-native language. The aim of this paper is to explore the most vital issues that emerge when lectures are delivered to non-native students at lower language proficiency level so as to enable them to meet their study goals as well as develop their intellectual and language potential. The author argues for the need of effective collaboration between lecturers and their students, based on a better understanding of the complexity of the instructional situation in which students’ language problems can be dealt with by making appropriate adjustments that can improve both lecture comprehensibility and knowledge acquisition.
