Opis:
Background and aims: Internet addiction in adolescents has been a growing problem over the recent years. The aim of the study was to assess the relationships between Internet addiction, loneliness (social and emotional) and adolescents’ lower quality of life. Methods: An anonymous survey was conducted in Poland in lower and upper secondary schools on a sample of  376 students, aged 14–19. The  Young’s Diagnostic Questionnaire, the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale and KIDSCREEN-10 index were used. The statistical analysis of the data included χ2 test, partial correlations (SPSS v. 23) and path analysis (AMOS v. 19). Results: Of the participants, 11.6% were identified as addicted to Internet, and 8.2% – as being at risk of addiction; 37.8% of the participants were moderately lonely, and 2.5% – severely lonely. Partial correlations with age and gender as controlled variables revealed relationships between Internet addiction and overall and emotional loneliness, but not social loneliness nor quality of life. Path analysis confirmed significant associations between Internet addiction and emotional loneliness, and between emotional loneliness and quality of life. Emotional loneliness was a statistically significant mediator between Internet addiction and quality of life. Conclusions: Internet addiction is a predictor of adolescents’ loneliness, and excessive use of the Internet indirectly lowers the quality of life of young people, causing emotional loneliness. Our study indicates a correlation, not a causal relation. Lonely individuals may use the Internet compensatively.
W badaniu zostały użyte: The Young’s Diagnostic Questionnaire, the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale oraz 10-czynnikowy kwestionariusz KIDSCREEN.

Opis:
The diffusion of information and communication technologies among children, youth and adults has become an evolving phenomenon. The end of the last century was characterized by rapid technological development and by deep changes in several aspects of human activities, often described as orientation of the world to the “knowledge age“. Such changes have led to many discussions about the roles of upbringing and education as well as ICT in lessons and learning in a new era and, of course, also about the negative effects of ICT mainly on children and the youth. We focused our attention on the effect of ICT on contemporary adolescents, both in terms of its use and possible misuse, particularly in the field of possible ICT addiction. We gave the questionnaire of our own construction to a group of adolescents: there were 1542 student respondents at the age from 15 up to 23, with an average age M=16.99, Sd=4.28, 647 boys and 895 girls. The independent variables were: gender, respondents’ age, the type of attended school, i.e., secondary vocational school=106 respondents, college=697 respondents, grammar school=739 respondents, evaluation marks from the last school certificate of the Czech language and Math. The obtained data were subjected to factor analysis. Programme Varimax orthogonal (NCSS) was used and according to Cronbach’s alpha (0.86), a critical value |0.30| was selected. 3 factors were generated: F1 Tendency to ICT addiction, F2 ICTa study aid and F3 Current daily use and misuse. More than a half of the respondents use daily this combination of ICT equipment: a PC, a laptop, a tablet and a mobile phone. We found out that the level of addiction to the internet is average; the internet as a study aid is used exceptionally frequently, daily use and misuse is slightly below average. Jan Lašek, Petra Kalibová, Jana Andršová Czech republic 73Adolescents and Information and Communication Technologies We chose the internet as a representative of all possibilities of ICT, as an easily accessible medium of contemporaneity. Based on a factor analysis, it can be stated that the more the internet is used for studying, the more possible the addiction to it is and also the tendency to its daily use and misuse.

The current paper presents the results from some research on the relationship between In-ternet addiction, cyberchondria, and different aspects of well-being. The information available on the Internet, which is not necessarily truthful and accurate, can unreasonably amplify users health concerns. Problematic Internet use, health anxiety aroused by online searches for health information and escalation of health concerns as an indicator of cyberchondria, are all associated with a decrease in subjective and eudaimonic well-being as well as in self-esteem. The analyses indicate positive relationships between depressive symptoms on the one hand, and Internet ad-diction and health anxiety, on the other. A conclusion regarding the existence of a relationship between Internet addiction, cyberchondria and decreased levels of well-being could be drawn from the research. Furthermore, the results suggest that self-esteem and eudaimonic well-being correlate positively with the number of people with whom users communicate online.

Opis:
The 21st century is undoubtedly a period of enormous progress in the field of digital technology, a period in which the boundary between the real world and the virtual world becomes less and less visible. The Internet has undeniably become a facilitation of everyday life, since it is a tool of work, communication or a way to spend free time for many users. The virtual world is present in almost all areas of our lives, and people spend more and more time in front of the computer screens, operating websites, e-mails or social networks. Highly developed digital technology is a boon of the 21st century, but despite its numerous advantages, negative aspects are also visible. Virtual knowledge displaces physical interpersonal contacts; physical activity is replaced by spending free time in front of a computer monitor. Various threats (social, psychological, psychological, ethical and moral) resulting from modern digital technologies and the increasing degree of dependence on them are extremely significant. The authors of this article present the results of own research, aiming at making the reader aware that there are both positive and negative aspects of the virtual world.

Opis:
Internet addiction has been identified as a major mental health problem, particularly among young nursing students. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and Internet addiction in this population. This study adopts a descriptive, quantitative, and correlational approach among 388 nursing students enrolled in a Higher Institute of Nursing Professions and Health Techniques in Morocco. The Internet Addiction Test (IAT), the Big Five Inventory (BFI) were used. A student-test was used to compare the differences in Internet addiction between different categorical groups. Pearson correlation was used to determine correlations between Internet addiction and personality traits. Linear regression analysis was performed to explore the effects of independent variable groups on Internet addiction. The overall prevalence of Internet addiction was 68.3% (AI > 30). There were significant differences in Internet addiction by age group (p = 0.001), gender (p = 0.004), grade (p = 0.003), and reasons for using the Internet (p = 0.004). Neuroticism (β = .493, p < .05) and extraversion (β = .479, p < .05) were positive predictors of Internet addiction, whereas agreeableness (β = -.461 p < .05) and conscientiousness (β = -.395, p < .05) were negative predictors. Personality traits are critical contributors when designing individualized intervention strategies that contribute to the prevention and reduction of Internet addiction in nursing students.

The present paper focuses on the effects of personality traits on the levels of Internet addiction and cyberchondria and their consequent effects on well-being. For the purposes of the research, mediation analyses were carried out, clarifying the infl uence of personality traits on well-being mediated by Internet addiction, cyberchondria and anxiety aroused by online health information seeking. It was established that Neuroticism leads to decreased well-being through the mediating infl uence of health anxiety, escalation and persistence of health concerns. Health anxiety is a mediator in the relationship between Openness to Experience and well-being. It was established that low levels of Agreeableness and Conscientiousness, and high levels of Openness, and Neuroticism, infl uence Internet addiction, which in turn leads to decreased well-being. Furthermore, we established the mediated infl uence of Internet addiction on the tendency for cyberchondria and health anxiety through using the Internet for health information and judgment biases.

The objective of the study was the comparative analysis of areas of Internet behavior (use of Internet, relations and Internet Addiction) with regards to gender in seven years’ perspective. The study was conducted in two stages (2005 and 2012) among Polish students (N = 452). Results showed significant gender differences in the use of Internet. The use of Internet is no longer predictor of Internet Addiction in both men and women. The higher number of contacts limited to Internet was a predictor of Internet Addiction in both men and women, but lower self-esteem in women only. Men were more prone to Internet Addiction in comparison with women and this tendency is on the rise.

Opis:
Metoda. W badaniach wykorzystano Kwestionariusz Poczucia Bezpieczeństwa i Prężności Osobowej (KPB-PO) autorstwa Zenona Uchnasta i Test Uzależnienia od Internetu K. Young (IAT). Wyniki.
The aim of the article is to present and discuss the findings of research on a group of Internet addicts in the context of a sense of security. A growing interest in the issue of a sense of security, both from the socio-cultural and psychological perspective, is also reflected in the emergence of research on a sense of security among those who are at a high risk of Internet addiction. In Poland, this type of research is virtually non-existent so far. Its implementation and dissemination, coupled with the reflection thereon seems to be of paramount importance because of its wide practical implications: in the area of a therapeutic relationship, a healing process and prevention, as well as a deeper insight into the problems of Internet addicted patients. An interpretive analysis covered the results for 136 respondents, including: Internet addicts and those not addicted to the Internet, aged 18-39. The research involved male subjects only. Method. The research used the Sense of Security and Personal Resiliency Questionnaire (KPB-PO) by Zenon Uchnast and the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) by Kimberly Young. Results. There are differences in a sense of security of Internet addicts and non-addicts. Developing a sense of security can contribute to improving the functioning of people who are addicted to the Internet.

Background. The aim of this study was to determine the Internet addiction level of university students and to investigate if there is an association between the Internet addiction and physical activity (PA). Material and methods. A total of 1419 participants studying at the Faculty of Sports Sciences (n=609) and the Faculty of Health Sciences (n=810) volunteered in the study and filled in the Personal Information Form. Data for the Internet addiction and PA level was collected by using Young’s Internet Addiction Scale and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), respectively. Results. According to the results of the study, the Internet addiction level of university students was mainly asymptomatic (90.3%), and only (9.7%) of all students showed limited symptoms. None of the students fell into the category of pathological Internet users in both faculties. The results revealed that 64.8% of the participants were found to be inactive, whereas only 35.2% of the students were physically active. According to the results, 92.3% of students who do high levels of PA were asymptomatic, and only 7.7% of them showed limited symptoms. Conclusions. Although itis believed that young adults use the Internet very actively and are prone to addiction, the results of the study showed that the rate of the Internet addiction symptoms in students is quite low, and none of the students suffer pathological symptoms of using the Internet.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody.

The increased time spent using the Internet and smartphones is prevalent primarily among adolescents. This group is currently of particular interest to media educators and psychologists studying the impact of ICTs on quality of life. An example of the negative changes associated with the intensive computerisation of various spaces is the uncontrolled and inadequate use of the Internet, referred to as problematic Internet use (PUI). This text contributes to the discussion on the extent of PUI among adolescents (12–16 years) in the Czech Republic (N=1555), Poland (N=501), and Slovakia (N=478). Based on the collected data, it was found that: 1) Polish and Czech adolescents are similar in terms of the intensity of PUI symptoms (adolescents from Slovakia are characterised by lower levels of PUI); 2) The vast majority of young people do not exceed PUI thresholds that could be considered alarming; 3) Lack of sleep or neglecting meals in favour of Internet use are the least frequent factors in the study group; 4) Most often adolescents declare that they are bored when they do not have access to the Internet; 5) Adolescents are a nonhomogeneous group in terms of the intensity of occurrence of PUI traits, but only 0.3% of adolescents in the Czech Republic and 0.4% in Poland had all 6 PUI factors present in maximum intensity.

Introduction. Researchers who study the problems of Internet addiction point out that this dependence is often co-morbid with symptoms of a variety of pathological disorders, including anxiety, depressive, somatization, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. The goal of this study was to compare the severity of psychopathological symptoms in individuals at risk of Internet addiction (according to Young’s criteria) and those not at risk of developing this addiction with respect to gender and place of residence (urban vs. rural). Materials and method. The study included a group of 692 respondents (485 females and 207 males). The average age of the participants was 20.8 years. 56.06% of them lived in urban areas and 43.94% in rural areas. The following instruments were used: a sociodemographic questionnaire designed by the authors, Young’s 20-item Internet Addiction Test (IAT, Polish translation by Majchrzak and Ogińska-Bulik), and the “O” Symptom Checklist (Kwestionariusz Objawowy “O”, in Polish) by Aleksandrowicz. Results. Individuals at risk of Internet addiction showed significantly more severe pathological symptoms than the individuals who were not at risk of this addiction. There were differences in the severity of psychopathological symptoms between people at risk of Internet dependence living in urban and rural areas. Conclusions. Individuals at risk of Internet addiction were found to be characterized by a significantly higher severity of obsessive-compulsive, conversion, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Persons at risk of Internet addiction who lived in rural areas had significantly more severe psychopathological symptoms, mainly obsessive-compulsive, hypochondriac and phobic, compared to their urban peers.

FOMO – the anxiety that we will miss out on something – is a new social problem related to the destructive use of new media. FOMO aroused researchers’ interest with the development of the Internet and social networking sites. Indeed, it can be considered as one of the aspects of Internet addiction. People experiencing FOMO want to be up to date and, at the same time, experience anxiety about 1) activities in which their friends participate, 2) information their friends know before they do 3) the purchases of their friends. FOMO can lead to the impression that we are missing out on various satisfying events that others are experiencing. This type of anxiety correlates with low self-esteem, feelings of sadness, envy, symptoms of depression and anxiety, and it worsens concentration and memory, which can have negative consequences for education. FOMO also worsens sleep and can reinforce dangerous driving habits. Research conducted on a sample of 500 Internet users from Poland indicates that 17.6% of the respondents have a strong indications of FOMO and that it is slightly more intense in respondents under the age of 35 and in women. FOMO symptoms correlate with personality traits and the frequency of unlocking the phone and checking social media on the phone and computer. The article also presents potential solutions to the FOMO problem that can be used in prevention carried out by educators and psychologists. The groups that should be covered by psycho-prevention are youth and young adults.

Social networks are effective and easy-to-use means of communication in the modern age technology. They remarkably influence the young users’ behavior being so entranced in such a virtual world which would easily develop into addiction. In this study we aim to measure the impact of addiction to Facebook on perception and working memory comparing two groups of young people, and how to protect scouting young people against this attachment or addiction. The study was carried out in the national center of scouting of Morocco at Ibn Tofail University on 53 master students with an average age of 24.45 years and 50 young scout leaders of Hassania Marocain scouting, who have an average age of 24.06. The educational level of these young people is between the 1st year of higher studies and the master degree. Digital test of complex Rey-Osterrieth figure and a Facebook addiction test questionnaire were used. The comparison of the means of attachment to Facebook between the two studied groups using T-test showed significant result (t = -2.510; P = .014 <0.05) with scout leaders demonstrated higher average of attachment to Facebook than that detected by master students. The results showed a statistically significant negative correlation between the hours consumed per day on Facebook and the perception and working memory. The perception of young Scout leaders is better than that of master students. We concluded that attachment to social networks influences working memory and perception, while the Scout method would serve as a new remedy for this scourge.

Opis:
The article presents the second attempt in Poland at examining the use of the Internet by 150 hearing and hearing-impaired adolescents. The empirical research concerned both groups’ “navigating” in the virtual world. A comparative analysis was carried out on the differentiation, dependencies, and correlations between a group of hearing respondents (girls and boys) and a group with hearing impairment in terms of their intrapersonal and interpersonal attitudes and attitudes towards the world. The intrapersonal sphere included self-image and self-esteem in a global aspect. It consisted of non-specific, general self-esteem, and partial self-esteem: the cognitive, intellectual, physical, characterological, and socio-moral spheres. Interpersonal attitudes were understood in the eyes of the respondent as an image of the rest of society and the relations between them. Thus, the sphere of “others towards me” appeared, based on the sense of support from the social environment, appreciation or indifference, threat from others, or a sense of security, among other things. In the area of “me towards others,” the dependencies concerned pro-social behavior, the general attitude towards other people, an altruistic attitude, egocentrism or sociability, a tendency to isolate oneself, aggression or a lack of aggressive behavior, problematic use of the Internet – an adaptation of IAT A. Young, which measures a subject’s sense of loneliness by De J. Gierveld – content sought on the Internet, the positive aspects of using the Internet, risks associated with it, and addiction.
