These authors performed a set of numerical calculations of water flow around pushed barges differing to each other by bow forms. The calculations were executed by means of FLUENT computer software. Turbulent free-surface flow of viscous liquid was considered. In this paper the calculated values of barge hull resistance split into bow, cylindrical and stern part components, have been compared and presented.

The article presents a frame technology for a pusher tug, the construction of which was developed within the framework of the INCOWATRANS project. The technological division was made using a so-called mass criterion. The weight of the biggest sections does not exceed 12 tonnes, which allows the steel hull to be built using even as small a crane as the truck crane of approximate carrying capacity of 20 tonnes. Subsequent building stages are illustratively shown in the figures.

In this paper a four-state semi-Markov model of occurrence of the situations endangering inland waterways passenger ships, is presented. The model was elaborated in the form of the semi - Markov process, values of which are kinds of the states interpreted as the following situations : normal, complicated, hazardous and emergency. An example of realization of the process of changing the situations possible to occur during trips of inland waterways passenger ships, is presented. Also, formulae are attached, which make it possible to determine probabilities of occurrence of the mentioned situations during ship trips. The formulae were interpreted as safety measures of operation of inland waterways ship. Possibility of performing statistical investigations which could provide data for determining the mentioned probabilities was also stated.

This paper presents a concept of hull structure of novel environment-friendly inland navigation and coastal ships for Polish east-west waterways. In compliance with its assumptions the inland navigation passenger ship is designed in the form of two mutually connected segments : a propulsion segment which contains gastronomy and entertainment infrastructure and crew accommodations and an articulated hotel segment. In this paper attention is focused on solutions of the hotel segment of an innovative structure mainly consisted of steel polyurethane-filled sandwich panels. Similar structural solution is intended for the propulsion segment.

In the paper selected approximate methods for calculation of inland waterways ship resistance and their verification by towing tests, compared on the example of a small urban ferry, are presented. The test results are made for both the bare hull and the hull with appendages (skeg, azimuthal propeller). Significant differences between results of the theoretical methods and experimental ones, especially in the case of the model with skegs and propulsion, are pointed out. The purposefulness of using several parametric methods and the use of average results at the preliminary design stage were also discussed.

This paper concerns an algorithmic method for preliminary selection of parameters of ship propulsion system fitted with fixed screw propeller in the case when the ship’s operation is associated with significant changes of waterway depth and width, hull resistance of the ship and its service speed. Mathematical model arguments of the considered design problem are main ship design parameters identified in the preliminary design stage. Structure of the formulated model complies with formal requirements for continuous- discrete mathematical optimization problems. The presented examples of application of the method concern an inland waterways ship fitted with compromise screw propeller optimized in the sense of minimization of fuel consumption for passing a given route distance within a given time. The elaborated method may be especially useful in designing such ships as : coasters, inland waterways ships, tugs, pushers, trawlers, mine sweepers, icebreakers etc.

Nowadays predicting transportation costs is more and more important. Most significant part of inland navigation’s costs are the costs of fuel. Fuel consumption is related to operating conditions of ship’s propulsion system and its resistance. On inland waterways the ship resistance is strictly related to the depth of the waterway. There is a tendency to build a formula that allows its user to calculate the resistance of any inland waterway vessel, but researches claim that most of them are accurate only for particular types of ships and/or operating conditions. The paper presents selected methods of calculating ship resistance on inland waterways. These methods are examined for different types of ships and different conditions using results of model tests. The performed comparison enabled selecting the best option for pushboats and pushed barge trains, but also showed that any of the tested methods is good enough to be used for calculating the resistance of motor cargo vessels. For this reason, based on known equations and using the regression method, the authors have formulated a new method to calculate the resistance of motor cargo vessels on limited waterway. The method makes use of ship’s geometry and depth of waterway in relation to ship’s speed. Correlating the ship’s speed with its resistance and going further with fuel consumption, enables to calculate the costs of voyage depending on the delivery time. The comparison of the methods shows that the new equation provides good accuracy in all examined speed ranges and all examined waterway depths.

This article presents the concepts of inland passenger transport: tourist and cruise in the basin of the Oder river. The first part describes the operating and technical parameters of the Oder and the present trends and directions in the development of inland waterway passenger services. Another part of the article contains an analysis of the results of the surveys carried out among respondents living in agglomerations lying on the Oder River. These studies have enabled the creation of two passenger transport concepts that enhance the competitiveness and attractiveness of inland waterway transport with respect to other modes of transport.

This paper presents a method for estimation of mass characteristics of vessels, elaborated with the use of an algorithm based on requirements of the Rules for the Classification and Construction of Inland Waterways Vessels of Polish Register of Shipping, and on a simplified method [6] for determination of mass of hull plating stiff"eners. The dimensioning method of hull structure scantlings based on this algorithm concerns classical vessels intended for the carrying of general cargo, dry and liquid bulk cargoes, which determine the range of the method application. The method does not cover vessels of different construction, e.g. roll-on-roll-off type vessels equipped with heavy decks, as the dimensioning of their scantlings is based on different relationships and models.

Data from model tests of an inland waterway vessel in shallow water have been used by the authors to prepare the resistance prediction in full scale. The common ITTC-1978 extrapolation procedure was applied using form factor determined according to the Prohaska method and, separately, by fitting the approximation function to resistance data. At the same time a series of CFD computations of ship flow has been carried out in model scale and in full scale, with double-body model as well as including the effect of free surface. The results of computations were used to determine total resistance and form factor. The values of form factor determined using different methods are similar and relatively high in comparison to values being applied to conventional sea going ships. Resistance prediction according to the ITTC-1978 with form factor was compared to prediction without form factor. The relative difference of resistance amounts 28% at ship speed of 10 km/h and 24% at ship speed of 12 km/h.

This paper presents a design concept of a novel passenger segment ship intended for navigating on Berlin- -Królewiec (Kaliningrad) inland waterway route, characteristic of application novel structural materials and engineering processes which make it possible to design structures in an innovative way and provide high operational merits for inland waterways ship. Conceptual, functional and technical assumptions for the designed ship as well as its service program was described. Exceptional features of the designed ship are : the general architectural concept which makes the ship free passing under small-clearance bridges and navigating in narrow and shallow waterways, possible, manufacturing technology of its hull structure made of „sandwich” panels as well as its combustion-electric engine (or combustion-hydraulic engine) propulsion system working on alternative ecological gas fuels.
