Opis:
Empirical evidence from a panel of 126 countries, over the time period of 2010 to 2014, indicates that economic growth is dependent on various factors. This paper finds that government expenditure control, reduced inflation and increased trade openness are the factors that boost the economic growth of a country. Significant evidence is seen for government consumption, fiscal policy and trade openness. No significant relationship has been observed between exchange rate and economic growth, whereas unemployment influences output for African countries. The cross regional analysis of Asian, European, African, Caribbean, and American countries gives specific determinants for these regions. Economic growth is also analysed in developing, developed, least developed, Muslim and petroleum exporting and emerging countries. The results of this study validate the dependence of economic growth on various factors. Fiscal balance has shown a consistent positive relationship with economic growth throughout the analyses. Fiscal balance and unemployment rate played their role in the growth of African countries. Inflation rates and increased openness were significant for some regions. Exchange rate did not return significant coefficients for any of the sub-regions. Government consumption, trade openness, policy interest rate and industrial production rate showed significant effect for different regions of the world.

Opis:
The increasing complexity of management in the global environment creates a need for a deeper understanding of the nature of relations between geopolitical occurrences and the development of Internationally Oriented Companies. Therefore, following a literature review, a conceptual model, including the determinants of development of Internationally Oriented Companies and the geopolitical processes, is proposed. The main research hypothesis states that Internationally Oriented Companies not only profit from their environmental opportunities, but also shape their operating environments in order to gain influence over the foreign policy-making of states. The paper provides its positive verification. The role of weak signals in the early identification of such behaviours is mentioned. A conclusive postulate of transcribing the elaborated model into a computer application for geopolitical decision-making for managers has been formulated.

Opis:
The global financial crisis, and especially the recession that spread across Europe in 2009, also affected Poland. While the Polish economy continued to grow throughout 2009, its growth decelerated considerably in quarterly terms. The paper examines the determinants of the slowdown, based on a simulation macroeconomic model called W8D-2007. The model’s properties are briefly outlined, and then a baseline medium-term forecast is introduced and some simulation exercises are shown, dealing mainly with pessimistic scenarios. By means of simulations based on the W8D model, the paper tries to show the key factors behind the serious slowdown in the Polish economy in 2009. The model examines the impact of declining exports and FDI, on the one hand, and the growing investment risk and positive changes in household consumption, on the other. The possible impact of fiscal and monetary policies is also examined. The effects of a reduction of income tax rates and social contribution rates as well as the implications of an increased budget deficit are also shown, and finally the impact of declining interest rates on investment and consumer demand is evaluated. The likely effects of measures aimed at constraining the increase of unemployment rates are also analyzed. The results are compared with changing forecasts for the Polish economy presented during 2009.

Opis:
The national economy is closely related to the demographic structure of the society. Therefore, in the face of demographic changes, it is necessary to assess the influence of these changes on economic growth. This article presents an estimation of the impact that the future changes in the demographic structure will have on the economic growth of Ukraine, represented by the rate of changes in GDP per capita. The decomposition of GDP per capita and making the components of this decomposition dependent on the demographic structure allowed an empirical analysis, which used a variety of econometric and statistical techniques and was based on a population forecast prepared by the Ptoukha Institute for Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. As a result, it was determined that the impact of the changes in the demographic structure on Ukraine's long-term economic growth will be highly diverse over the studied period (until 2060). However, considering the entire period of the analysis, the negative effects of the changes in the demographic structure on the economy will be counterbalanced by the positive effects of these changes.

Opis:
The main goal of the research is to obtain a comprehensive examination of the economic growth determinants in Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic (CEEC-4) since 1995. For this purpose, two methodological approaches have been applied: the Solow growth accounting and the non-parametric approach. At the beginning of the analysis, in order to obtain a general overview of the sources of economic growth in the former transition countries of Central Eastern Europe, the Solow growth accounting has been conducted. It decomposes the growth rate of output into contributions from changes in the quantity of the physical capital stock, the amount of labour input and some other unexplained factor commonly interpreted as reflecting technological progress and called the “Solow residual” or “Total Factor Productivity (TFP)”. The hypothesis that technological progress together with strong capital accumulation were the dominant factors behind the economic growth and convergence process in the Central Eastern European countries before the crisis is tested. As the Solow growth accounting does not reveal the driving forces behind the technological progress and, thus, a large part of the growth decomposition remains unexplained in the transition economies, the non-parametric approach has been employed to shed more light on the ultimate sources of economic growth in the CEEC-4. The non-parametric (production-frontier) method enables the further decomposition of changes in total factor productivity into changes in the efficiency of production and technological changes. Furthermore, it allows accounting for human capital accumulation, since improvements in quality of labour are also reflected in TFP growth.

Opis:
Due to limited resources, effective urban development policies require the identification of key development areas and priorities. The existing development strategies or results of statistical analyses can be used for this purpose. In the latter case, one of methods of multidimensional analysis can be used – discriminant analysis. Although it is applied to many areas on a microeconomic scale, e.g. in predicting the bankruptcy of enterprises, it was rarely used to assess the competitive position or the dynamics of development of cities. The main aim of the paper is to identify the most important factors of development of Polish cities with powiat status and to analyse changes of these factors in time. Apart from typical areas, such as investment, income, employment, debt, or migration, the analysis uses qualitative variables which allow us to assess whether the size of the city and its location determine the dynamics of city development. The authors have found that the key factors determining the development of the largest Polish cities are related to the situation on the labour market and investments incurred by companies as well as by the cities themselves.

Opis:
The aim of the research is to analyse various forms of debt financing used by Polish companies. Besides, issues related to corporate growth have been examined. The paper presents answers to the number of research questions and verifies the stated research hypotheses. The conducted empirical research has confirmed to a great extent the findings of previous analyses presented in the examined literature. The relation between entity size and debt financing use has been proved. The bigger a company is, the more often debt is used, and the wider variety of debt forms the company reaches for. The connection between debt financing used for investment purposes and the stage of the company’s life cycle has been shown as well. Recently. debt (mainly investment loans) has been used more frequently, especially for investments. The statement that joint-stock companies have better access to debt financing than companies with other legal forms should also be supported. Consequently, these types of firms use debt more often and choose its more complex forms. Another relation indicated in the research is the positive connection between debt use and the improvement in the general financial situation of the company within the last 3 years.
