Opis:
The aim of this paper is to study regional gradient observability for a diffusion system and the reconstruction of the state gradient without the knowledge of the state. First, we give definitions and characterizations of these new concepts and establish necessary conditions for the sensor structure in order to obtain regional gradient observability. We also explore an approach which allows for a regional gradient reconstruction. The developed method is original and leads to a numerical algorithm illustrated by simulations.

Opis:
This paper introduces a new classifier design method based on regularized iteratively reweighted least squares criterion function. The proposed method uses various approximations of misclassification error, including: linear, sigmoidal, Huber and logarithmic. Using the represented theorem a kernel version of classifier design method is introduced. The conjugate gradient algorithm is used to minimize the proposed criterion function. Furthermore, .1-regularized kernel version of the classifier is introduced. In this case, the gradient projection is used to optimize the criterion function. Finally, an extensive experimental analysis on 14 benchmark datasets is given to demonstrate the validity of the introduced methods.

Opis:
In this article the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method, realized on GPU and intended to solution of large finite element problems of structural mechanics, is considered. The mathematical formulation of problem results in solution of linear equation sets with sparse symmetrical positive definite matrices. The authors use incomplete Cholesky factorization by value approach, based on technique of sparse matrices, for creation of efficient preconditioning, which ensures a stable convergence for weakly conditioned problems mentioned above. The research focuses on realization of PCG solver on GPU with using of CUBLAS and CUSPARSE libraries. Taking into account a restricted amount of GPU core memory, the efficiency and reliability of GPU PCG solver are checked and these factors are compared with data obtained with using of CPU version of this solver, working on large amount of RAM. The real-life large problems, taken from SCAD Soft collection, are considered for such a comparison.

Opis:
In this study, different flowsheet options were evaluated to achieve the best upgrading conditions for a micaceous iron oxide ore. The first option included the recovery of micaceous iron oxide particles using a double stage magnetic separation circuit after the grinding and classifying of the ore into coarse (-1000+106 μm) and fine (-106 μm) size fractions. A belt type dry high gradient magnetic separator (BHGMS) was used to beneficiate the coarse fraction. The concentrate of the BHGMS was ground to -106 μm, and combined with the fine fraction produced at screening stage, and subjected to high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) at 1.2 T. A concentrate grading about 61.33% Fe with 60.3% recovery was obtained applying the separation process incorporating BHGMS and HGMS. A single stage separation circuit considering the use of HGMS after the grinding the ore below 106 μm was employed as the second concentration option. A concentrate having 63.80% Fe with 37.1% weight recovery was obtained in this test. As the highest Fe grade and the lowest S concentration was obtained by application of HGMS after the grinding the ore below 106 μm, and it was decided to conduct a pilot scale study using pulsating HGMS. A concentrate assaying 69.45% Fe with 60.1% weight recovery was produced by operating the pulsating HGMS at 0.6 T. The results showed that it was possible to obtain a micaceous iron oxide concentrate to be used in pigment production using magnetic separation method.

Opis:
It is well known that in discrete optimization problems, gradient (local) algorithms do not always guarantee an optimal solution. Therefore, the problem arises of finding the accuracy of the gradient algorithm. This is a fairly well-known problem and numerous publications have been devoted to it. In establishing accuracy, various approaches are used. One of these approaches is to obtain guaranteed estimates of the accuracy of the gradient algorithm in terms of the curvature of the admissible domain. With this approach, it is required to find the curvatures of the admissible region. Since finding the exact value of curvature is a difficult problem to solve, curvature estimates in terms of more or less simply calculated parameters of the problem are relevant. A new improved bound for the curvature of an order-convex set is found and is presented in this paper in terms of the steepness and parameters of strict convexity of the function.

Opis:
Seepage gradients play an important role in the detachment of soil particles from the side walls of stream channels and drainage ditches. Most seepage studies have focused on water losses. Relatively few have addressed the determination of these gradients as causes of soil loss and incipient gully development. This paper presents the methodology of calculating these gradients on any point of the soil-water interface of a subsurface flow system, for which a close-form analytical solution was obtained (Römkens 2009). Such a solution was derived using conformal transformations for a situation in which a ponded surface drains by subsurface flow into a ditch with a water table lower than that of the ponded surface. The derived relationships allow a close estimate of the soil detachment forces on the wetted drainage perimeter of the stream system.

We present a numerical simulation of two coupled Navier-Stokes flows, using operator-splitting and optimization-based nonoverlapping domain decomposition methods. The model problem consists of two Navier-Stokes fluids coupled, through a common interface, by a nonlinear transmission condition. Numerical experiments are carried out with two coupled fluids; one with an initial linear profile and the other in rest. As expected, the transmission condition generates a recirculation within the fluid in rest.

While performing geodesic tasks of highest fidelity in machinery production plants, ironworks, rolling mills etc. – including monitoring of the geometry of production lines, geodesic measurements of dislocations and deformations of gravity dams and many other kinds of geodesic tasks, laser alignmetric methods have been used for decades. An important disadvantage of these simple optical methods lies in the negative impact of geodetic refraction on the path of the laser beam. This paper presents a theoretical mathematical-physical model for calculating refraction adjustment (line corrections) including a sample calculation.

The stability issue of critical shapes for shape optimization problems with the state function given by a solution to the Neumann problem for the Laplace equation is considered. To this end, the properties of the shape Hessian evaluated at critical shapes are analysed. First, it is proved that the stability cannot be expected for the model problem. Then, the new estimates for the shape Hessian are derived in order to overcome the classical two norms-discrepancy well know in control problems, Malanowski (2001). In the context of shape optimization, the situation is similar compared to control problems, actually, the shape Hessian can be coercive only in the norm strictly weaker with respect to the norm of the second order differentiability of the shape functional. In addition, it is shown that an appropriate regularization makes possible the stability of critical shapes.

Current development of gravimetric measurement technologies gives an opportunity to determine absolute gravity value with high precision, also in field conditions. In particular, it concerns gravity determination with the use of the A 10 free-fall gravimeter manufactured by Micro-g Solutions. Surveys with the A 10 as well as with FG5 gravimeters require precise determination of vertical gravity gradient in order to properly reduce the measured gravity value, e.g. to the benchmark level. A special stand of multiple levels (20 cm interval) for vertical gradient determination had been designed and constructed in the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography (IGiK), Warsaw. The stand enables the determination of the vertical gravity gradient on every station where the measurement with the A10 can be performed. First results of vertical gradient determinations at the Polish National Gravity Control points in Borowa Gora Geodetic-Geophysical Observatory (two laboratory and one field station) with the use of the stand developed are presented in the paper. Results of measurements on multiple levels were fitted with linear and nonlinear model and compared with vertical gravity gradients determined in the year 2000, based on the measurements using a standard tripod. Measurement methodology with the use of the stand has been proposed.

In some applications, there are signals with a piecewise structure to be recovered. In this paper, we propose a piecewise sparse approximation model and a piecewise proximal gradient method (JPGA) which aim to approximate piecewise signals. We also make an analysis of the JPGA based on differential equations, which provides another perspective on the convergence rate of the JPGA. In addition, we show that the problem of sparse representation of the fitting surface to the given scattered data can be considered as a piecewise sparse approximation. Numerical experimental results show that the JPGA can not only effectively fit the surface, but also protect the piecewise sparsity of the representation coefficient.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the sensitivity of a multiphase Eulerian CFD model with respect to relations defining drag forces between phases. The mean relative error as well as standard deviation of experimental and computed values of pressure gradient and average liquid holdup were used as validation criteria of the model. Comparative basis for simulations was our own data-base obtained in experiments carried out in a TBR operating at a co-current downward gas and liquid flow. Estimated errors showed that the classical equations of Attou et al. (1999) defining the friction factors Fjk approximate experimental values of hydrodynamic parameters with the best agreement. Taking this into account one can recommend to apply chosen equations in the momentum balances of TBR.

Opis:
A numerical coupling of two recent methods in shape and topology optimization of structures is proposed. On the one hand, the level set method, based on the classical shape derivative, is known to easily handle boundary propagation with topological changes. However, in practice it does not allow for the nucleation of new holes (at least in 2-d). On the other hand, the bubble or topological gradient method is precisely designed for introducing new holes in the optimization process. Therefore, the coupling of these two method yields an efficient, algorithm which can escape from local minima in a given topological class of shapes. Both methods rely on the notion of gradient computed through an adjoint analysis, and have a low CPU cost since they capture a shape on a fixed Eulerian mesh. The main advantage of our coupled algorithm is to make the resulting optimal design largely independent of the initial guess.
