Opis:
Time-Frequency (t-f) distributions are frequently employed for analysis of new-born EEG signals because of their non-stationary characteristics. Most of the existing time-frequency distributions fail to concentrate energy for a multicomponent signal having multiple directions of energy distribution in the t-f domain. In order to analyse such signals, we propose an Adaptive Directional Time-Frequency Distribution (ADTFD). The ADTFD outperforms other adaptive kernel and fixed kernel TFDs in terms of its ability to achieve high resolution for EEG seizure signals. It is also shown that the ADTFD can be used to define new time-frequency features that can lead to better classification of EEG signals, e.g. the use of the ADTFD leads to 97.5% total accuracy, which is by 2% more than the results achieved by the other methods.

Opis:
The most crucial transmission components utilized in rotating machinery are gears and bearings. In a gearbox, the bearings support the force acting on the gears. Compound Faults in both the gears and bearings may cause heavy vibration and lead to early failure of components. Despite their importance, these compound faults are rarely studied since the vibration signals of the compound fault system are strongly dominated by noise. This work proposes an intelligent approach to fault identification of a compound gear-bearing system using a novel Bessel kernel-based Time-Frequency Distribution (TFD) called the Bessel transform. The Time-frequency images extracted using the Bessel transform are used as an input to the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), which classifies the faults. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated with a case study, and a testing efficiency of 94% is achieved. Further, the proposed method is compared with the other TFDs and found to be effective.

Opis:
High phonotactic probabilities are known to exert a facilitative effect on word learning in children and adults in their first language. The present study was designed to investigate the role of phonotactic probabilities when learning a foreign language. Focusing on Austrian and Korean learners of English, we investigated two hypotheses related to phonotactic frequency effects: (1) High-frequency segments have more deeply entrenched phonetic representations, with more automatized pronunciation patterns, rendering phonetic learning of homophonous segments more difficult; (2) High-frequency segments are associated with higher phonetic variability in the first language, which can facilitate phonetic learning in a foreign language. Additionally, the locus of phoneme/ bigram frequency effects was analyzed in relation to left-branching and right-branching syllable structure in German and Korean. We found that proximity to English voice-onset time is correlated with phoneme and bigram frequencies in the first language, but results varied by learner group. Sub-syllabic segmentation of the first language was also shown to be an influential factor. Our study is grounded in research on frequency effects and combines its central premise with phonetic learning in a foreign language. The results show a tight relationship between first language statistical probabilities and phonetic learning in a foreign language.

Takie podejście pozwala na uzyskanie przedziałów możliwych wskaźników jakości obsługi w miastach na Ukrainie.
The analysis of existing methods of transport demand modeling allowed defining the interval approach to trip matrix calculation as a preferred one to determine demand for public transport services. This approach takes into account the probabilistic nature of forming the ‘home– work’ pairs that cause regular trips over certain distances. The regularities in these trip distances can be presented by trip length frequency distribution that became the basis for developing a new approach to the trip matrix calculation. This approach allows obtaining the intervals of possible indices of passenger service quality in Ukrainian cities.

Opis:
Mining-induced seismicity is a commonly occurring phenomenon in underground mines. This poses a greater challenge to the safety of the mining operation. This paper presents a case study of the Young-Davidson mine in northern Ontario, Canada, where seismic events of magnitude Mn 2.0+ have been observed at mining depths of 600 to 800 m below the surface. The occurrence of large seismic events at such shallow depths is the key issue of this study. A comprehensive study of the microseismic database has been conducted to discern the root causes for the unusually strong seismic activities recorded at shallow depths. The effects of mining activities in the vicinity of two dykes intersecting the orebody on the seismic response are investigated. Variation of the b-value derived from the magnitude-frequency distribution is examined, and moment tensor inversion for three large seismic events is carried out to determine the source mechanisms. It is shown from this investigation that the influence of the sill pillar is more critical, leading to high mining-induced stress and the occurrence of large events. While the findings from this research are specific to this case study, they could be used to shed light on the causes of induced seismicity at other mines with similar conditions.

Opis:
Formulaic competence is a hotly debated issue in teaching circles, not only because of its role in L2 communication but also due to the inherent complexity of the identification criteria for formulaic strings. While the mixed approach, combining meaning-based and corpus- based identification measures, remains a natural solution, the subjective character of the criteria, together with the required involvement of native experts, diminishes its attractiveness for every-day pedagogical purposes. We would like to explore the potential of “corpus-only” identification tools. Specifically, our objective is to show that meaningless n-grams (of the, in a, etc.) generated by frequency searches contain useful pedagogical data, and that, coupled with MI scores frequency-based measures accurately characterize learners’ formulaic competence. Because of the relative simplicity of the identification procedure and free availability of corpus tools, frequency-based and distribution-based measures may become an important new pedagogical tool at the disposal of language teachers

Opis:
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is considered a key diagnostic tool in neuroscience, by means of which valuable insight into the metabolism function in vivo may be gained. Due to the underlying physical nature of PET, 3D imaging techniques in terms of a 3D measuring mode are intrinsically demanded to assure satisfying resolutions of the reconstructed images. However, incorporating additional cross-plane measurements, which are specific for the 3D measuring mode, usually imposes an excessive amount of projection data and significantly complicates the reconstruction procedure. For this reason, interpolation-based reconstruction methods deserve a thorough investigation, whose crucial parts are the interpolating processes in the 3D frequency domain. The benefit of such approaches is apparently short reconstruction duration, which can, however, only be achieved at the expense of accepting the inaccuracies associated with the interpolating process. In the present paper, two distinct approaches to the realization of the interpolating procedure are proposed and analyzed. The first one refers to a direct approach based on linear averaging (inverse distance weighting), and the second one refers to an indirect approach based on two-dimensional convolution (gridding method). In particular, attention is paid to two aspects of the gridding method. The first aspect is the choice of the two-dimensional convolution function applied, and the second one is the correct discretization of the underlying continuous convolution. In this respect, the geometrical structure named the Voronoi diagram and its computational construction are considered. At the end, results of performed simulation studies are presented and discussed.

Oxbow lakes occurring in floodplains are those natural elements that are subject to rapid changes, which may lead to their disappearance. These are extremely valuable ecosystems and landscape components, as well as water management units. However, they quickly disappear if they are not periodically fed with river water, which takes place especially when rivers are embanked. Such a situation occurs, among others in Warsaw, in the Vistula valley. There are many opportunities for the reactivation of oxbow lakes, including through technical activities. It is not always possible to restore the natural values of the valley in urbanized areas, however, oxbow lakes can then also play a recreational role and they can fulfill an important task in improving the quality of life, being also an important element of the public space system. The author has carried out research related to land development projects of the new district located in the Vistula River valley in Warsaw (the Siekierkowski Arc). Many different design solutions have been proposed, taking as a leitmotiv the restoration of oxbow lakes, for example: (1) reconstruction of the water channel in the former watercourse with the boulevard along its fragment and with the public park in another part, (2) water supplying of the existing oxbow lake through the green and blue infrastructure system. The author presents few urban designs carried out under her direction for this area and shows that creative reactivation of oxbow lakes can improve water conditions, and be beneficial for the introduction of a new, attractive development.

The exponential development of technologies for the acquisition, collection, and processing of data from real-world objects is creating new perspectives in the field of machine maintenance. The Industrial Internet of Things is the source of a huge collection of measurement data. The performance of classification or regression algorithms needs to take into account the random nature of the process being modelled and any incomplete observability, especially in terms of failure states. The article highlights the practical possibilities of using generative artificial intelligence and deep machine learning systems to create synthetic measurement observations in monitoring the vibrations of rotating machinery to improve unbalanced databases. Variational AutoencoderVAE generative models with latent variables in the form of high-level input features of time-frequency spectra were studied. The mapping and generation algorithm was optimised and its effectiveness was tested in the practical solution of the task of diagnosing the three operating states of a demonstration gearbox.

Several possibilities to present and to interpret the results of granulometric analyses of Quaternary fluvial, aeolian, glacial and wash-out slope deposits were investigated. Attention is paid particularly to the cumulative curves at a probability scale and the frequency curves, and it is shown how these curves can help to determine the sedimentary environment. The inclination of the cumulative curves in the part of the maximum proportion of a particular grain size appears significant. It appears possible to obtain information on the density and dynamics of the transporting medium from the course of the cumulative curves (inclination and spread of grain size). The examination of textural parameters allows to draw regression lines characteristic of both deposits from various sedimentary environments and deposits from one single environment but with different histories as to their transport dynamics.

Opis:
Flows with a given probability of exceedance are important from the point of view of water management, especially in water reservoirs. By determining these flows, it is possible to design a reservoir adapted to local conditions that will operate in line with the assumed function. Various methods exist in the world for determining the probable maximum flows; these methods are based on various assumptions. The aim of the article is to verify and assess the applicability of the Flood Frequency Analysis (FFA) and the IMGW method for use in catchments of controlled rivers where a retention reservoir was built during the hydrological observation period. This is important in updating the water management instructions and in designing new retention reservoirs. The authors undertook to investigate whether a series of maximum flows prepared for the IMGW method allows one to recognize the regime change, caused by the construction of the retention reservoir, in the water gauge Zbytowa profile on the Widawa River, using the Mann-Kendall test. The following distributions were used in the study: Pearson type III, log-normal and Weibull. The Mann-Kendall test showed homogeneity of three observational series: 1971-2000, 2001-2017 and 1971-2017 prepared for the FFA method despite the fact that in 2001 the Michalice retention reservoir was commissioned on the Widawa river and the water management in the basin changed this watercourse. However, the observational series prepared for the IMGW method were homogenous only prior to the construction of the reservoir (1971-2000). The observational series prepared in this way enabled the Mann-Kandall test to exclude the homogeneous series caused by the regime change as a result of the construction and operation of the Michalice retention reservoir. Only after the construction of the retention reservoir the observational series from the winter half-year were homogeneous. This is due to the fact that the flows in the winter half-year are definitely lower than those in the summer half-year. The best-fitting distribution for the empirical distribution for the Widawa (the Zbytowa profile) in the analyzed series is a log-normal distribution that can be used to calculate the probable maximum flows needed to update the reservoir's water management instructions. The Wilcoxon test showed no difference between the calculation methods analyzed and used to estimate the probable maximum flows in the Zbytowa profile on the Widawa river. Therefore, as a method for calculating the probable maximum flows for the Widawa river (the Zbytowa profile) in the aspect of managing the Michalice reservoir or some other river with controlled catchment and parameters similar to those of the Widawa (in the Zbytowa profile), one can recommend either of the two analyzed methods: both FFA and IMGW.
Test Wilcoxona wykazał, brak różnic pomiędzy analizowanymi metodami obliczeniowymi użytymi do obliczeń maksymalnych przepływów o określonym prawdopodobieństwie przewyższenia rzeki Widawy (profil Zbytowa), dlatego też jako metodę do obliczania przepływów maksymalnych prawdopodobnych w zlewni rzeki Widawy w profilu Zbytowa w aspekcie gospodarowania wodami zbiornika retencyjnego Michalice lub innej rzeki o zlewni kontrolowanej o podobnych parametrach zlewni co zlewnia rzeki Widawa (profil Zbytowa), można wskazać obie analizowane metody: FFA i IMGW.

Opis:
The most commonly used time-frequency representation of the analysis in voice signal is spectrogram. This representation belongs in general to Cohen’s class, the class of time-frequency energy distributions. From the standpoint of properties of the resolution, spectrogram representation is not optimal. In Cohen class representations are known which have a better resolution properties. All of them are created by smoothing the Wigner-Ville’a distribution characterized by the best resolution, however, the biggest harmful interference. The used smoothing functions decide about a compromise between the properties of resolution and eliminating harmful interference term. Another class of time-frequency energy distributions is the affine class of distributions. From the point of view of readability of analysis of the best properties are known so called Redistribution of energy caused by the use of a general methodology referred to as reassignment to any time-frequency representation. Reassigned distributions efficiently combine a reduction of the interference terms provided by a well adapted smoothing kernel and an increased concentration of the signal components.
