W opracowaniu analizowano szereg dobowych sum opadu z Łodzi z okresu 1931-1995. Przedstawiono roczny bieg częstości występowania dni bez opadu i z opadem w poszczególnych przedziałach wartości. Stwierdzono, że pojawienie się opadu zależy w większym stopniu od charakteru cyrkulacji niż od kierunku napływu mas. Badano długoletnią zmienność częstości dni bez opadu, dni z sumą opadu powyżej 10 mm i największej dobowej sumy opadu w roku. Pokazano, że najwyższe dobowe sumy opadu pojawiają się w dniach o cyrkulacji Eo.
Record of daily precipitation totals from Łódź from the period 1931-1995 has been analysed. The annual courses of frequencies of days without precipitation and with precipitation in particular ranges were presented. It was shown that occurrence of precipitation is stronger related to the character of circulation than to direction of air mass advection. Long-term variability of frequencies of days without precipitation, days with totals exceeding 10 mm/day and long-term variability of the highest daily total during the year were analysed. It was shown that the highest daily totals occur in day with circulation of type Eo.

Modele stochastyczne są istotne dla zastosowań w finansach czy w ubezpieczeniach. Statystyczne metody estymacji parametrycznej wykorzystywane najczęściej do wyznaczania parametrów modeli to metoda największej wiarygodności lub MNK. Metody te dają optymalne oszacowania modeli, jednakże odchylenia obserwowanych wartości w kalibrowanym modelu mogą zachwiać dobre własności estymatorów. Przedstawimy pewne aspekty estymacji odpornej w kontekście rozkładów wartości ekstremalnych. Podejmiemy dyskusję metodologicznych aspektów zagadnienia pokazując, jak estymatory odporne wpływają na jakość analiz z wykorzystaniem rozkładów wartości ekstremalnych poprzez informacje o obserwacjach wpływowych.
In parametric statistics estimators such as maximum likelihood or OLS typically estimate stochastic models, which play an important role in finance and insurance. These methods are generally optimal for an assumed reference model. Slight deviations from the assumed model may easy destroy the good statistical properties of the estimator. We present some aspects related to robust estimation in the context of extreme value theory (ETV). We discuss some methodological aspects how robust methods can improve the quality of extreme value theory data analysis by providing information on influential observations.

The contents of geography textbooks and school atlases have become the basis to elaborate on preparations of our society for contact with natural hazards. Leaving aside the causes of more frequent inflow of information about natural disasters, the question comes up on the effectiveness of education in view of raising education level intended in the reform of education system of 1999. This research was conducted in post middle schools in Warsaw in 2006/07. The debate on the need for broad geography education about natural hazards in the schooling period was started. It was pointed out that it is necessary to develop the ability to understand and recognize the hazard and the attitude which allows to take responsible decisions prior to, in the face of and following an extreme natural event.

In the late 20th century, warming on the Antarctic Peninsula was most pronounced compared to other parts of Antarctica. However, air temperature showed a significant variability, which has become especially evident in recent decades. Thus, the investigation of air temperature trends on the Antarctic Peninsula is important. This study examines the extreme air temperature at the Ukrainian Antarctic Akademik Vernadsky station, located on Galindez Island, Argentine Islands Archipelago, near the Antarctic Peninsula. For 1951 to 2020, based on the daily air temperature data, the temporal trends of extreme air temperature were analyzed, using 11 extreme temperature indices. Based on linear trend analysis and the Mann-Kendall trend test, the TXn, TNn, TN90p, and TN90p indices showed an upward trend, whereas theFD0, ID0, TN10p, TX10p, and DTR indices showed a downward trend. Among them, annually, FD0, ID0, and TN10p significantly decreased by –0.427 days, –0.452 days, and -0.465%, respectively, whereas TXn and TNn increased by 0.164℃ and 0.201℃, respectively. The indices TXx and TNn showed no statistically significant trends. The average annual difference between TX and TN (index DTR) showed a nonsignificant decreasing trend at –0.029℃ year-1 . Thus, for the period of 1951-2020, the Ukrainian Antarctic Akademik Vernadsky station was subjected to warming.

Opis:
Intensification of extreme rainfall-runoff events in arid and semi-arid regions because of climate change induce the water erosion that contributes considerably to the loss of vegetal layers of soils and reduce the storage capacity of dams by silting of transported sediments from the watershed to the impoundment. This paper aims at proposing means for protecting the Mghila dam against silting by identification and delimitation of vulnerable areas to water erosion. This dam, built in the North-West of Algeria, ensures irrigated cultivation. Topographical, geological, and land use characteristics of the watershedwere analyzed using the geographic information system (GIS). Analysis of results has allowed the identification by area percentage four-vulnerability classes with sensitivity to the water erosion: low (18.89%), medium (13.08%), high (65.05%) and very high (8.38%). The spatial distribution of the lithological substratum friability, the vegetation cover and slope degrees have led to the development of an efficient strategy for the watershed management in order to reduce the effect of water erosion on soil degradation and silting of the Mghila dam.

The main aim of the paper is presentation some key aspects in modeling extreme mortality risk. We make a review and discuss measures of extreme mortality risk. Besides, we use approach proposed by J.M. Bravo et al. [2012], that is focused on using EVT to model the statistical behaviour of mortality rates over a given high threshold age. Insurers and reinsurers are interested in assessing the risk exposure to extreme mortality risk.
Celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie kluczowych aspektów w modelowaniu ekstremalnego ryzyka umieralności. Przedstawiamy dwa podejścia pomiaru ryzyka. Po pierwsze, dyskutujemy miary ryzyka ekstremalnego, które są wykorzystywane w pomiarze ryzyka umieralności. Po drugie, przedstawiamy podejście zaproponowane przez J.M. Bravo i innych [2012], polegające na wykorzystaniu EVT do modelowania umieralności powyżej pewnego wieku. Oceną ekstremalnego ryzyka umieralności są zainteresowani ubezpieczyciele i reasekuratorzy.

For two vertices u and v of a connected graph G, the set $I_G[u,v]$ consists of all those vertices lying on u-v geodesics in G. Given a set S of vertices of G, the union of all sets $I_G[u,v]$ for u,v ∈ S is denoted by $I_G[S]$. A set S ⊆ V(G) is a geodetic set if $I_G[S] = V(G)$ and the minimum cardinality of a geodetic set is its geodetic number g(G) of G. Bounds for the geodetic number of strong product graphs are obtainted and for several classes improved bounds and exact values are obtained.

Very often, we are interested in the shape of a signal or an envelope of the signal or its spectrum. Classical extreme analysis (CEA) produces too many minor details of a signal shape. This fact, in the context of telecommunications, does not allow us to ensure a significant coefficient of a signal compression. Another option for signal analysis, based on the Delta Modulation (DM), lacks sufficient dynamic range at a relatively low sampling rate. One more "true envelope" manner is based on the cepstral analysis, and requires too many operations. Other methods are used for the definition of a signal envelope. The discrete Hilbert transform (DHT) is only expedient to capture an envelope of a narrowband signal and, moreover, requires too many mathematical operations. Other manners based on decimation, as well as the use of a signal rectifying followed by low-pass filtering do not always ensure sufficient accuracy and signal compression coefficient. Fuzzy EA (FEA) is free from similar drawbacks. Its first and second differences are compared with no zero limits, and that allows us to take into consideration only major details of the signal or spectrum shape. Consequently we obtain both an envelope of wideband signal, and a signal significant compression in real time. This article focuses on FEA features connected with the aforementioned tasks. Apart from the FEA algorithm, the article outlines some methods of signal reconstruction after FEA in both domains, and the structure of the FEA specializedprocessor. FEA application in both domains is demonstrated through examples.

Flooding in East-Central Europe in May and June 2010 also affected the Odra River Basin. Unlike a typical summer flood scenario, in 2010 intensive precipitation was observed as early as May. Also, the location of the most intensive rainfall shifted to the catchments of the right bank tributaries of the Odra River. This paper presents the climatological assessment of the precipitation totals that caused two flood waves on the Odra River. The assessment was carried out with the use of selected indicators: monthly precipitation totals, daily precipitation totals, number of days exceeding given precipitation levels, number of days with precipitation of a given probability of exceedance and intensity, duration and accumulation of precipitation for a number of consecutive wet days. The reference values for climatological indicators were developed for the period 1966-2009. The values of the selected indicators were analyzed in terms of flood hazard in relation to the hazard gradation. The results show that the observed precipitation had the character of an extreme event with respect to its magnitude, duration and spatial extent. The catchments with recognized high levels of flood hazard were affected by the flood wave. The flood situation caused by the extreme precipitation was evaluated in the context of the largest floods in this region during recent decades.

Nowadays, recreational activity is not only the general tendency to improve physical function, but is also associated with increased physical effort and risk. For example, there has been the development of more sophisticated and dangerous forms of skiing. Today, skiing can be divided into downhill skiing, practiced in ski resorts, and freeskiing. The freeskiing forms include ski-touring and freeride, considered as extreme. The extreme forms are characterized by high risk as the main motive for their practice. The most important predisposition to engage in those activities is the courage expressed in risk taking propensity. Risk taking propensity is a personality trait that affects human decisions in risky situations. Depending on its severity, more or less risky behavior can be observed. The aim of the study was to determine the level of propensity to risk behaviors of people involved in forms of activity associated with a higher risk in comparison with other participants, on the example of recreational skiing. The questionnaire constructed by Ryszard Studenski was used to measure the risk taking propensity and frequency of risky behavior. The research was carried out on 40 persons classified on the basis of the declaration of preferred form of skiing. People practicing extreme forms of winter activity (skitouring, ski-mountaineering) showed lower level of risk taking propensity than a group of downhill skiers. It was found that the preference of risky sports is not definitely related to the higher propensity to risk-taking behavior.
