Opis:
The article presents the current state of evolutionary economics against the backdrop of changes related to the potential use of the achievements of other social sciences, in particular psychology, as well as dynamically developing neuroscience. The article suggests a synthesis of evolutionary and behavioural economics concepts as a logical consequence of evolutionary cooperation processes in social sciences. Interdisciplinary initiatives create new perspectives on generation synergy effects for all participants. Contemporary evolutionary economists present the nature of ongoing innovation-driven economic change as a long evolutionary process. The main creator of the econosphere as a global system is a man–entrepreneur who is also the result of evolutionary processes. For this reason evolutionary economics should take into account the results of behavioural economics’ research based on modern psychology and neuroscience. The cornerstone of evolutionary and behavioural economics synthesis are the theories of Adam Smith which should be regarded as his holistic intellectual heritage.

Opis:
Assembler Encoding represents a neural network in the form of a simple program called Assembler Encoding Program. The task of the program is to create the so-called Network Definition Matrix, which maintains all the information necessary to construct a network. To generate the programs and, in consequence, neural networks, evolutionary techniques are used. One of the problems in Assembler Encoding is to determine an optimal number of neurons in a neural network. To deal with this problem a current version of Assembler Encoding uses a solution that is time consuming and hence rather impractical. The paper proposes four other solutions to the problem mentioned. To test them, experiments in a predator-prey problem were carried out. The results of the experiments are included at the end of the paper.

Opis:
The paper deals with the application of Parallel Evolutionary Algorithms (PEA) and the Finite Element Method (FEM) in shape optimization of heat radiators. The fitness function is computed with the use of the coupled thermoelsticity modelled by MARC/MENTAT software. The geometry, mesh and boundary conditions are created on the basis of a script language implemented in MENTAT. In order to reduce the number of design parameters in evolutionary algorithms, the shape of the structure is modelled by Bezier curves. Numerical examples for some shape optimization are included.

Opis:
The origin of major morphological innovations poses a major problem for macroevolutionary biologists. Such innovations appear to be overwhelmingly concentrated early in the history of major clades; subsequent evolution involves elaboration and variation on these early themes. Although confirmation of this pattern requires morphometric techniques only now being developed, it seems too firmly established to be an illusion. A variety of explanations have been advanced for the extensive morphologic innovation during the Cambrian radiation, including the ecospace hypothesis which relies on more extensive ecospace, and a variety of genomic hypotheses ranging from a more rapid rate of real or apparent mutation, to novel types of genetic change, or novel effects within a more plastic developmental system. Recently some theorists have suggested the inherent properties of complex dynamic systems are a sufficient explanation. However, most discussions have emphasized the ecosystem and genomic hypotheses. These have proven difficult to disentangle because no unique predictions about expected patterns have been proposed, but I suggest here phylogenetic tests which do discriminate between these possibilities. There is a curious distinction between the empty ecospace hypothesis and one variant of the developmental hypothesis: Under the former, extensive morphologic innovation should be possible whenever extensive ecospace becomes available. The constraints on innovation are atemporal and extrinsic. In contrast, under the second scenario the formation of developmental systems itself constrains further innovation. Thus the concentration of innovation early in the history of clades may stem from irreversible changes associated with the origin, rather than subsequent modification, of development.

Opis:
The phenomenon of globalization, which is well known in the economy, can nowadays be observed also in the area of science. It is based on the fact that more and more scientific disciplines are applying the same explanatory principle, namely the theory of evolution. Therefore, every development, including that of man, according to the pattern of genetic reproduction, takes place on the basis of natural selection. With psychological properties, mental abilities and social behaviours, which are eloquently referred to as “memes”, it is as with genes: only those that are better, stronger, more capable of surviving will survive after accidental changes and only they will be passed on. In short, reproduction regulates and controls human behaviour. Such a way of thinking and explanation can be found today in many publications on sociobiology and evolutionary psychology. Even if they present many new details, they pay tribute to the old human desire to explain everything in a simple way, according to the same scheme. The same expectation towards science was expressed by E. Haeckel in the 19th century and J. Monod in the 20th century. However, when these two biologists explained man as a whole based on the theory of evolution, they admitted that they referred to philosophy, to which contemporary representatives of sociobiology and evolutionary psychology cannot or do not want to confess.

Opis:
The paper presents the application of a memetic algorithm to searching for the optimal sequence of the assembly of parts. Such approach is based on the use of an algorithm connecting two methods of global and local search in order to increase the effectiveness of the conducted optimisation process. Based on a proper representation of assembly sequences and a set of geometrical, topological and technological constraints, connected with the attributes of a product, it is possible to create an evolutionary model. Through proper control of the evolution process in a model, based on the appropriate selection of parameters, it is possible to achieve good results in a short period of time. Although the evolutionary algorithm does not guarantee the obtaining of optimal solutions, it has been proven, based on sample simulations, that such solutions are obtained in a repeated manner. The application of the presented evolutionary approach enables creating fast assembly sequence planning tools, indispensable in tactical planning and operational control of manufacturing processes.

A new parallel method for learning decision rules from databases by using an evolutionary algorithm is proposed. We describe an implementation of EDRL-MD system in the cluster of multiprocessor machines connected by Fast Ethernet. Our approach consists in a distribution of the learning set into processors of the cluster. The evolutionary algorithm uses a master-slave model to compute the fitness function in parallel. The remiander of evolutionary algorithm is executed in the master node. The experimental results show, that for large datasets our approach is able to obtain a significant speed-up in comparison to a single processor version.

Opis:
This article describes two evolutionary methods for dividing a graph into densely connected structures. The first method deals with the clustering problem, where the element order plays an important role. This formulation is very useful for a wide range of Decision Support System (DSS) applications. The proposed clustering method consists of two stages. The first is the stage of data matrix reorganization, using a specialized evolutionary algorithm. The second stage is the final clustering step and is performed using a simple clustering method (SCM). The second described method deals with a completely new partitioning algorithm, based on the subgraph structure we call α-clique. The α-clique is a generalization of the clique concept with the introduction of parameter α, which imposes for all vertices of the subgraph the minimal percentage (α*100%) of vertices of this subgraph that must be connected with vertices of this α-clique. Traditional clique is an instance of α-clique with α = 1. Application of this parameter makes it possible to control the degree (or strength) of connections among vertices (nodes) of this subgraph structure. The evolutionary approach is proposed as a method that enables finding separate α-cliques that cover the set of graph vertices.

The central goal of the presented article is to show that the type of rationality proper to the method of the contemporary sciences yields a unique conceptual environment in which the spirit of rationality instilled to the theological thought by its encounter with the Greek philosophy finds its natural expansion. At the outset, the origins of the Greek rationality in the Ionian school of philosophy are briefly discussed in order to illuminate their adequacy for the exposition and defense of doctrine in the times of the early Church Fathers. Next, the specificity of the scholastic method of St. Thomas Aquinas briefly surveyed to indicate the nature of the unique harmony between faith and reason achieved by the Angelic Doctor. In the following step, the role of rationality in theology is gleaned through negative examples of its elimination as evident in nominalism and the subsequent Lutheran intervention. This is followed by a short discourse into of the origins and the specificity of the contemporary scientific method with particular emphasis on the method’s unique potential to expand and deepen the Greek rationality. Finally, a case study of the evolutionary theology is offered in which the implementation of the dynamic (evolutionary) picture of the Universe as the conceptual foundation opens up new and profound ways of understanding the Universe’s meaning and the meaning of man in particular. Thus the spirit of the hellenistic rationality in theology is not only preserved but also significantly enhanced.

The work is devoted to the identification of microstructure parameters of a porous body under thermal and mechanical loads. The goal of the identification is to determine the parameters of the microstructure on the basis of measurements of displacements and temperatures at the macro level. A two-scale 3D coupled thermomechanical model of porous aluminum is considered. The representative volume element (RVE) concept modeled with periodical boundary conditions is assumed. Boundary-value problems for RVEs (micro-scale) are solved by means of the finite element method (FEM). An evolutionary algorithm (EA) is used for the identification as the optimization technique.

Niching is a group of techniques used in evolutionary algorithms, useful in several types of problems, including multimodal or nonstationary optimization. This paper investigates the applicability of these methods to evolutionary multi-agent systems (EMAS), a hybrid model combining the advantages of evolutionary algorithms and multi-agent systems. This could increase the efficiency of this type of algorithms and allow to apply them to a wider class of problems. As a starting point, a simple but flexible EMAS framework is proposed. Then, it is shown how to extend this framework in order to introduce niching, by adapting two classical niching methods. Finally, preliminary experimental results show the efficiency and the simultaneous discovery of multiple optima by this modified EMAS.
