Nowadays, transportation becomes a significant source, apart from factories and power plants, of air pollution. Therefore, due to legal restrictions on the emission of noxious gases, other power sources for vehicles are necessary. Some of these power sources allow replacement of the internal combustion engine completely, whereas the other ones only support the engine operation. Hence, a hybrid powertrain – alternative to the drivetrain equipped with an internal combustion engine only – is increasingly being used. The hybrid powertrain was mostly applied in cars and buses but recently it has been also used in railway vehicles such as locomotives and multiple units. The paper presents a shortened and brief overview of construction solutions of selected hybrid locomotives. A list of the applied hybrid drive systems as well as the basic data and properties are provided. The most important variants of vehicles are compared. The presented material allows identification of the development trends in the considered area. The hybrid locomotive usually uses an onboard rechargeable energy storage system, placed between the power source and the traction transmission system connected to the wheelsets. Modification of a classic diesel-electric locomotives is a relatively simple procedure since they have all the components of a series hybrid transmission except the storage battery. Therefore, the existing and operated diesel-electric locomotives can be modified to increase their efficiency and reduce operating costs and emissions.

Opis:
Bionics has been widely used in many fields. Previous studies on the application of bionics in locomotives and vehicles mainly focused on shape optimisation of high-speed trains, but the research on bionic shape design in the electric locomotive field is rare. This study investigated a design method for streamlined electric locomotives according to the principles of bionics. The crocodiles were chosen as the bionic object because of their powerful and streamlined head shape. Firstly, geometric characteristic lines were extracted from the head of a crocodile by analysing the head features. Secondly, according to the actual size requirements of the electric locomotive head, a free-hand sketch of the bionic electric locomotive head was completed by adjusting the position and scale of the geometric characteristic lines. Finally, the non-uniform rational B-splines method was used to establish a 3D digital model of the crocodile bionic electric locomotive, and the main and auxiliary control lines were created. To verify the drag reduction effect of the crocodile bionic electric locomotive, numerical simulations of aerodynamic drag were performed for the crocodile bionic and bluff body electric locomotives at different speeds in open air by using the CFD software, ANSYS FLUENT16.0. The geometric models of crocodile bionic and bluff body electric locomotives were both marshalled with three cars, namely, locomotive + middle car + locomotive, and the size of the two geometric models was uniform. Dimensions and grids of the flow field were defined. And then, according to the principle of motion relativity, boundary conditions of flow field were defined. The results indicated that the crocodile bionic electric locomotive demonstrated a good aerodynamic performance. At the six sampling speeds in the range of 40–240 km/h, the aerodynamic drag coefficient of the crocodile bionic electric locomotive decreased by 7.7% on the average compared with that of the bluff body electric locomotive.

Reliability of electric locomotive power units is the most important condition of electric locomotive wheel gear trouble-free operation. At present visual-measuring inspection and the magnetic-particle method are the basic methods of electric locomotive power units inspection according to the "CS" electric locomotive Repair Rules. The method of Metal Magnetic Memory is an effective method for equipment stress-strained state assessment, which becomes more and more widely spread in practice. MMM is a non-destructive testing method based on registration and analysis of self-magnetic leakage fields distribution on products surface for determination of stress concentration zones, defects, metal and welded joints structure inhomogeneity.
Niezawodność jednostek napędowych lokomotyw elektrycznych jest jednym z najważniejszych warunków bezawaryjnej pracy kół napędowych lokomotyw. W obecnych czasach, pomiary optyczne oraz metody kontroli oparte o cząstki magnetyczne są podstawowymi metodami badania jednostek napędowych lokomotyw elektrycznych, w szczególności stosowane dla reguł naprawczych lokomotyw elektrycznych "CS". Metoda metalowo - magnetycznej pamięci jest efektywną metodą dla szacowania stanu naprężeniowo - odkształceniowego obiektów, która staje sie coraz szerzej i częściej stosowaną w praktyce. Metoda ta jest nie - niszczącą metodą, opierającą się na rejestracji i analizie rozprzestrzeniania się pól magnetycznych po powierzchni obiektu w celu ustalenia stref koncentracji naprężeń, defektów i niejednorodności metalowych i zespawanych konstrukcji.

The problem arising at the design of electric locomotives with asynchronous traction drive are considered. The electrical scheme provides the possibility of individual (by axle) control of traction motors. This allows realizing the operational disconnection/connection of one or more axles in the automatic mode, with account of actual load. In Part 1 of this paper, the complex computer model based on the representation of AC traction drive as controlled electromechanical system was developed. The description of methods applied in modeling of traction drive elements (traction motors, power converters, control systems), as well as of mechanical part and of "wheel-rail" contact, was given. In Part 2, the results of dynamic electromechanical processes modeling in various modes of electric locomotive operation (start and acceleration, traction regime in straight and curve railway sections, wheel-slide protection, etc.) are presented. In perspective, based on the developed model, the evaluation of locomotive's energy efficiency at the realization of various control algorithms must be obtained.
Рассматриваются проблемы, возникающие при проектировании электровозов с асинхронным тяговым приводом (АТП). В электрической схеме реализована возможность индивидуального (поосного) регулирования тяговых двигателей, что дает возможность оперативного отключения/подключения одной или нескольких осей в автоматическом режиме, с учетом реальной нагрузки. В части 1 настоящей статьи была представлена разработанная комплексная компьютерная модель, основанная на рассмотрении АТП как управляемой электромеханической системы. Приводится описание методов, использованных при моделировании элементов тягового привода (тяговых двигателей, силовых преобразователей, систем управления), также как механической части и контакта «колесо-рельс». В части 2, представлены результаты моделирования динамических электромеханических процессов в различных режимах работы электровоза (трогание с места, движение в режиме тяги в прямых и кривых участках пути, подавление боксования и т.д.). В перспективе, основываясь на разработанной модели, должна быть получена оценка энергетической эффективности электровоза при реализации различных алгоритмов управления.

The working conditions of freight electric locomotives with full-weight and empty-weight trains are analyzed. It is shown that due to the use of scalable traction power control technology (discrete-adaptive control algorithm), there is a possibility for more complete use of electric locomotive capacity and, accordingly, a significant increase in its energy efficiency. The main condition for the realization of this possibility is the presence of an individual per-axle traction control system. Corresponding changes in the construction of electric locomotives of previous years of production can be made during modernization as part of factory repair. The calculation of financial savings from the use of these proposals is presented.

The use of specialized rail rolling stock which is used for transporting ore from the quarry to the crushing plant at mining enterprises is analyzed here. Electric locomotives with an asynchronous traction electric drive and an on-board energy storage system are considered for use. The calculated dependencies of the electric locomotive tractive power were analyzed and it was established that on flat sections of the track profile, the movement is carried out with a power that does not exceed 50% of the nominal one. The movement with the nominal power is carried out on the controlled uphill during the cargo half-passage. To ensure the necessary power for movement in such areas, the use of an on-board energy storage system is proposed, which should feed the traction system while limiting the power consumed from the catenary. This happens when the voltage on the pantograph drops to a minimum level. The aim of this work is to determine the on-board energy storage system parameters during the operation of the electric locomotive with limitation of the power consumed from the traction network. Mathematical models of the energy exchange processes in the electric locomotive traction system have been developed. The criteria for comparing options for calculating the parameters of the on-board energy storage system have been proposed. The criteria take into account the reduction of energy consumption during movement, the efficiency of energy storage, and the complete use of the on-board energy storage system in terms of power and working energy capacity. Based on the calculation results, it was determined that the use of an energy storage device with a power of 3,540 kW and an operating energy capacity of 63.5 kWh provides a 10% reduction in energy consumption, which is being consumed while moving along the sample section of the road. The current that can be consumed by an electric locomotive with such parameters of the on-board energy storage system is limited by 600 A.

At the beginning of the paper, the analysis of energy efficiency indicators for freight electric locomotive with asynchronous traction drive feeding from AC network under various operating conditions including when working with trains of various masses is made. The movement on different railway sections is considered. The graphs of locomotive’s speed, traction force, consumed power, and power for the traction obtained by on-board recorder are shown. In addition, the dependence of the locomotive's energy efficiency from the degree of using of its available traction capacity has been experimentally obtained, the greater is the using of the locomotive’s capacity, the greater will be its efficiency. On the basis of the performed analysis of energy efficiency indicators for various operating conditions, the proposals for their improvement are formulated. The algorithm ensuring the stabilization of the instantaneous value of efficiency at partial load to its nominal level at full load is presented. This algorithm is the implementation of Scalable Power Control Technology with respect to the problem of reducing electricity consumption for electric locomotive traction. The direct the experimental confirmation of energy consumption reduction for freight electric locomotive due to the application of our proposals (under the same operating conditions of the locomotive) is obtained.

This paper deals with research aimed at developing a method for ergonomic analysis of the driver’s workplace in an electric locomotive. It presents the structure of the diagnosis and its assumptions, and includes a re-evaluation of the questionnaire-expert method in ergonomic research. The article presents research data on weights and evaluations including their standard deviations for particular priority features. Ergonomic levels of the studied operator’s cabin in locomotives are compared.
