Opis:
This article presents selected aspects of the anonymous Old English epic Beowulf in which the elements of the world of fantasy are intertwined with historical episodes, and Christian values co-occur with the images of pagan rites. Written in the vernacular and to the rhythm of alliterative metre Beowulf is an example of the highest artistic achievement. The anonymous poet skillfully depicted the harsh Northern world shaped by the Christian culture. Although Beowulf has been studied since the beginning of the 19th century many fundamental issues are still unresolved. With the focus on the source text and its manuscript context some of the puzzles may yet be unravelled.

Opis:
Two masterpieces of the chivalric epic literature, Orlando Furioso of Lodovico Ariosto and Gerusalemme Liberata of Torquato Tasso have had their Polish versions of rare beauty and value thanks to the translator of ge- nius, Piotr Kochanowski. The fate of their reception is, however, very diffe- rent. The reasons of the absence of Orlando Furioso remain still inexplica- ble, while the number and diversity of the editions of its original version in Polish libraries could prove the contrary. Anyway, only detailed provenance research would establish the real origin of these books. The evolution of the reception of the Gerusalemme Liberata during the whole 17th c. is an interesting example of a fusion of both foreign and domestic motifs, and of an attractiveness of the Renaissance patterns in the new times.

The article contains elementary information concerning the manuscripts of 1 Enoch, their editions, and scientific literature that deals with the topic. The presentation  begins with the list of larger bibliographic collections concerning the Enochic writings,  then the Aramaic witnesses preserved in 11 manuscripts found in Qumran Cave 4 are  shortly discussed and pertinent information concerning their edition is given. The rest of  the study adduces basic details about the manuscripts that contain the translation of the original Aramaic and the history of their publication. By offering a general perspective  on the manuscripts of 1 Enoch, with special attention focused on Aramaic evidence, the  article leads the reader through the textually and linguistically complicated history of text transmission of this important Jewish composition.

Opis:
Copies of early-printed books have been of interest to to-day’s collectors and researchers not only for their material aspects (names of publishers and places of printing, fonts and composition, number of known copies etc.), but also because they bear signs of their often erratic history following their publication. The path followed by a particular copy of an early-printed book is reflected in its general state as an object (for instance the state of its binding), but also in its internal aspect. On the pages of a copy of an early-printed book, annotations, drawings doodles or graphics testify to the intimate relationship that its owners entertained with it. To better understand how owners dealt with copies of the books they possessed, this paper examines the annotations found in copies of some books that belong to the Carmelite convent in Cracow. We hope to bring to the attention of scholars, copies of works of Galen housed in this library, and primarily to set a perspective on how books were read by cultured individuals of in the 16th century period. To do so, we analyse copies of the 1507 Venice edition of the Articella and a copy of Latin edition of Galien (Iuntae, Venice, 1531). We attempt to identify the intellectual perspectives from which cultured readers approached such texts in the 16th century.

Opis:
The article examines available today manuscripts and first editions by Alhierd Abuchovič, the Belarusian writer of the second half of the 19th century. Despite the fact that the Belarusian literary critics of the Soviet and post-Soviet periods have done a lot in the study of the writer's legacy, it is necessary, considering recently discovered materials, to look once again at the history of the publication of his texts (paying attention to the accuracy of their reconstitution), as well as their interpretation, which once was determined by Soviet ideology. Comparison of the manuscripts and first editions by A. Abuchovič with later publications of memories, fables and poetry (as well as new materials) allowed to make a conclusion not only on adaptation of the text by editors-publishers, but also on V. Lastouski’s (?) translation of the memoirs from Polish into Belarusian. Using the methods of literary-historical and textual analysis allowed usto state that the fable Staršyna, first published in ‘the period of 'Naša Niva’, was edited by Janka Kupala, at that time executive secretary of ‘Belarusian publishing society in Vilnius’ and compiler (?) of the Belarusian calendar for 1915. There is also doubt as to the traditional assertion that the Belarusian-language works were signed by Abuchovič with the pseudonym ‘Count Bandinelli’: the manuscripts testify to the fact that the Polish-language works of the poet were signed with this pseudonym, and the Belarusian-language works were signed with his own name. Into scientific circulation were introduced obscure fragments of memories, a letter from A. Abuchovič to A. Valicki etc. Also, a new interpretation of the poem Duma a Karólu XII is proposed.
Artykuł został poświęcony rękopisom i pierwodrukom prac Olgierda Obuchowicza, białoruskiego literata z II poł. XIX w.
Biełaruskaha kalendara na 1915 hod. Duma a Karólu XII.

Opis:
The publication describes various cases of attributing fragments of editions from the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine. The attribution included the identification of extracts from the text, authentication of sheets used as flyleaves, and waste paper sheets. It is shown in the examples that the binding shops at the printing houses of Ostroh, Lviv, Kyiv, and Chernihiv actively used waste paper. The article describes cases when the attribution of editions assembled from fragments, the Vilnius Gospel in particular, became the reason for a scientific study and catalogue of the Gospels of 1575–1644 in the library collection. The attribution of fragments of several different editions allowed us to identify unknown printing variants, and to form the complete Gospel text. Printed engravings inserted into books also provide interesting material for further research. The practice of studying them has shown that sometimes they are previously unknown artistic monuments by famous engravers, for example, Hryhorii Levytskyi and Ivan Myhura. The usage of various methods of work, such as the study of the history of engravings, a comprehensive analysis of their state of preservation, the establishment of the history of the copies’ use, and the study of paper filigrees, prove that book engravings were also printed for independent distribution. In particular, we are referring to images of evangelists associated with the names of Petro Mstyslavets and Pamva Berinda. The study of printed inserts of engravings, illustrations, and texts into manuscript codices is an interesting and promising area of research

The article deals with the Cyrillic early printed books and one-sheet prints of printing houses of Univ and Pochaiv monasteries (the middle of 17th–18th centuries) from the depository of V. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine, which were described for the scientific catalogues. During the copy-by-copy research of Univ and Pochaiv early printed books, many one-sheet editions and editions without titles and source data were discovered, catalogued for the first time, and included in the chronology of the Ukrainian Cyrillic printing. All findings are displayed in the article. Letter by Varlaam Sheptyckyi and counterfeit Univ editions of Euchologions are among them. Univ and Pochaiv publications form an important part of Ukraine’s historical and cultural heritage.
