    The aim of this article is to explore the most recent literary representations of the so-called “Revival process” in Bulgarian history or the renaming of the Bulgarian Muslim and Turkish minorities in the 1980s in Zlatko Enev’s Requiem for Nobody (Реквием за никого, 2011), Martin Marinov’s The Veil (Булото, 2014), Miroslav Penkov’s The Stork Mountain (Щъркелите и планината, 2016), and Liudmila Mindova’s Novel for the Name (Роман за името, 2017). The analysis focuses on the outlining of the thematic and structural similarities between the novels and the different approaches toward the depiction of trauma. I argue that this new trend is an attempt to rethink the legacy of the communist past and conceptualize collective trauma.

    Contemporary reflections on identity mostly focus on its changeability and volatility. We are also witnessing threats to cultural security and the so-called cultural trauma today, which do not inhibit the process of cultural homogenization and the resulting crossing of cultures, however. The intensifying processes of migration also raise a number of concerns. Perhaps this situation, generating new areas of conflict, has contributed to a revitalization of the notion of identification with a group, society, nation, as it provides a sense of security by emphasizing shared interests and common good.
    Współczesne rozważania na temat tożsamości koncentrują się w przeważającej mierze na jej zmienności i płynności. Obecnie obserwowane są także zjawiska zagrożenia bezpieczeństwa kulturowego i tak zwanej traumy kulturowej, które jednak nie powstrzymują procesu homogenizacji kultury i będącego jego następstwem krzyżowania się kultur. Nasilające się procesy migracji również stają się powodem wielu obaw. Być może ten stan wytwarzający swoiste nowe pola konfliktów jest przyczyną rewitalizacji pojęcia identyfikacji z grupą, społeczeństwem, narodem, gdyż daje on poczucie bezpieczeństwa poprzez eksponowanie wspólnoty interesów i dobra wspólnego.

    The Portrayal of National Identity in the Films of Małgorzata SzumowskaMałgorzata Szumowska is without a doubt one of a few Polish directors who has managed to distinguish herself on the European film market. Although, Szumowska is a cosmopolitan (in Ulf Hannerz’s terms), she does not forget about her Polish origins. On the contrary, she emphasizes contemporary Polish identity of her protagonists and Polishness in itself but does it from the external perspective. In her feature films, Małgorzata Szumowska defines Polish identity, according to Antonina Kłoskowska’s theory, as a phenomenon which always exists in a specific social and cultural context. From this perspective, Polishness is constantly negotiated and renegotiated by film protagonists. The author will distinguish three categories through which the director defines Polishness, these are: cultural trauma, national character and modern Catholic religiousness. These categories will be analyzed on the basis of specific examples. An applied methodological approach relies on cultural poetics assumptions, also known as new historicism. Portret tożsamości narodowej w filmach Małgorzaty SzumowskiejNiewątpliwie Małgorzacie Szumowskiej jako jednej z niewielu polskich reżyserek udało się przebić na europejskim rynku filmowym. Chociaż Szumowska może być uznana za kosmopolitkę (w rozumieniu Ulfa Hannerza), to nie zapomina ona o swoich polskich korzeniach. Przeciwnie, w swoich filmach podkreśla zainteresowanie współczesną Polską i polskością, ale czyni to niejako z perspektywy „zewnętrznej”. Wykorzystując teorię tożsamości narodowej autorstwa Antoniny Kłoskowskiej, autor wskazuje, że Szumowska w swoich filmach fabularnych postrzega tożsamość narodową jako fenomen obecny zawsze w określonych warunkach społeczno-kulturowych. W tym ujęciu polskość jest nieustannie negocjowana i renegocjowana przez filmowych protagonistów. Autor wyróżnia trzy kategorie, poprzez które reżyserka określa polskość: traumę kulturową, charakter narodowy oraz religię katolicką, które analizuje na konkretnych filmowych przykładach. Zastosowane podejście metodologiczne wykorzystuje postulaty poetyki kulturowej zwanej również nowym historyzmem.

    Стаття є аналітичним оглядом еволюції проблематики історичної й колективної пам’яті та розвитку меморіальних досліджень. Аналіз наукових здобутків меморіальних досліджень виявив неусувно селективний характер колективної пам’яті, за якого її робота з відновлення минулого здійснюється за законами сучасного і відповідно до його потреб. Таким чином, політизація минулого залишається невід’ємним складником його функціонування в сучасному. У країнах молодої демократії підвищення ступеню політизації минулого зумовлено ще й логікою розгортання націєтворчих процесів. Виявлено, що сакрально-міфологічна природа «героїчного наративу», який слугує ідентифікаційною основою для спільноти, і пов’язаної з ним «точкивідліку», того моменту, коли «все почалося» зумовлює розгортання навколо них «війн пам’яті». В умовах глобалізації «війни пам’яті» виходять за національні межі й перетворюються начинник міждержавних відносин. Встановлено, що в сучасному світі в царині політики пам’яті уже сформовано глобальний консенсус, в основі якого – принципи універсальності прав людини,свободи і демократії. Останнє зумовлює зміну панівних раніше наративів пам’яті, заснованих на образах перемог і тріумфів, наративами історичної травми й жертовності.
    The article is an analytical review of the evolution of historical and collective memory issues and of the development of memory studies. The analysis of the scientific achievements in the field ofmemory studies has revealed the ineffably selective nature of collective memory, in which its work for restoration of the Past is carried out according to the laws and needs of the Modernity. Thus, thepoliticization of the Past is an integral part of its functioning in the Present. In the countries of young democracy the increase of the degree of politicization of the Past is also determined by the logic of the nation-building processes. It was revealed that sacred and mythological nature of the “heroic narrative” is serving as the identification basis for the community and the “reference point” is associated with it. That is why very often the moment when “everything began” causes the deployment of “wars of memory” around them. In the context of globalization the “war of memory” goes beyondnational borders and turns into a factor of interstate relations. It is found that in the modern world in the field of memory politics a global consensus has already been formed, and it is based on theprinciples of the universality of human rights, freedom and democracy. This causes a change in the earlier memory narratives, which were based on images of victories and triumphs, by the narratives ofhistorical trauma and sacrifice.

    The article opens with an autoethnographic account of its author's encounter with the American sense of space in the context of the clash of his own and American cultural norms related to car ownership and car use. The initial anecdotes, in which the negative experiences of the authors lack of knowledge of the essentials of the car culture in the US prove to be instrumental in the process of learning and adaptation, lead to a more profound, historiosophic reflection upon the cars as vehicles of ethics across American cultural history.

    For many years, Israeli culture recoiled from dealing with the Holocaust from a humorous or satirical perspective. Since the 1990, a new unofficial path of memory has begun taking shape in Israel. Texts that combine the Holocaust with humor are a major aspect of this new memory. The case study includes three skits by The Chamber Quintet (Hahamishia Hakamerit, “Matar” Productions, Channels 2-Tela’ad, Channel 1, 1993-1997), the first who dared to use satire to criticize the Holocaust memory agents in Israel. The paper analyzes the changes in the attitude towards Holocaust humor in Israel through theories of trauma and secondary trauma. Contrary to perceptions that these satirical skits disrespect the Holocaust and its survivors, the paper argues that these skits do not constitute cheapening mechanisms, but are nurtured by pain and criticism of a post-traumatic society.
