Opis:
The musical milieu raises a number of challenges for artists. Coping with these depends not only on the level of musical abilities but also on a number of personal skills. The diverse styles of music education and the expectations set for musicians performing various music genres have inspired research exploring the differences between classical and jazz musicians. Of the psychological areas important for functioning effectively as a musician, stress management styles and social skills have been examined in this study. It was assumed that the genre of publicly performed music, and thus the different modes of music education in the field of classical and jazz music performance, can cause significant differences in the psychological functioning of musicians. Of the 73 musicians who participated in the study, 38 were classical musicians and 35 were jazz musicians. The jazz musicians revealed a significantly higher level of social competence in terms of social exposure compared to the classical musicians. There were no differences in the style of coping with stress between the two groups. The results of the study might inspire psychologists working with musicians to plan therapeutic programs aimed at psychological preparation for public performances, with the specificity of musical genres taken into account. Future research may investigate the extent temperament and personality of musicians representing different specialties influence their stress coping strategies and social skills.

Opis:
The current research was aimed to investigate the effectiveness of psychological treatment on the life quality and coping styles of Shishe abusers, based on the matrix model. The current study was semi-experimental. The statistical population of this research consisted of Shishe abusers in the city of Rasht. The research sample included 20 people who were selected through in access method and were randomly divided into two experimental and control groups. The World Health Organization's Life Quality Scale and Parker and Andler's Coping Styles Scale were administered to both groups in form of pretest and posttest. Findings: Findings revealed that participants' scores in therapeutic sessions were significantly higher compared to those in the control group in regard to subscales of problem oriented and emotion oriented coping styles. Also, in relation to life quality subscales, it was determined that experimental group scores in subscales of interpersonal relations, physical health and life requirements were significantly higher than those in the control group. It appears that a psychological therapy, based on a matrix model, cam cause to promote peoples' life quality level and thus offer more effective techniques for coping with negative stresses and emotions.

One of the main factors connected with the effectiveness of realizing tasks in crisis situations is the psycho-physiological condition of the team members. The specificity of tasks, which are carried out during crisis management, imposes the risk of functioning under pressure. Crisis response teams can counteract or foster the development of a crisis situation if the tasks are delayed or performed incorrectly. The aim of the article is to examine stress coping strategies and the sense of coherence in army, police, and fire brigade adepts. The level of the sense of coherence was assessed using the SOC-29 questionnaire (Antonovsky, 1995), whereas stress coping strategies were measured using the CISS questionnaire (Endler & Parker, 1990). The results revealed no significant differences between the representatives of the three formations in their sense of coherence or stress coping strategies. Statistical differences between the groups were noted for the following subscales: avoidance strategy, engagement in substitutionary tasks, and searching for social contact. There were no significant correlations between the total and subscale scores of the measures.

Styles of coping with stress
Opis:
Abstract Selecting specific professional activities (e.g. a brigade officer) and methods for coping with difficult situations may result from personal predispositions of a given person. Personality is founded on the innate temperament. The way of dealing with stress depends on personality traits whose influence is manifested, amongst other things, in the selection of specific coping styles. The current study aim to examine the level of correlation between personality and temperamental traits with manifested coping styles. The study covered 58 volunteers – male fire brigade officers. The following tools were used: Personality Inventory, NEO-FFI, Formal Characteristics of Behaviour: Temperament Inventory – Revised Version, FCZ-KT (R) and Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations, CISS. Emotion-focused coping style for stressful situations correlates with the following traits: positively, with perseveration (r=0.5115) and with emotional reactivity (r=0.4927), and negatively, with briskness (r=-0.3926) and endurance (r=-0.5408). The task-oriented coping style for stressful situations correlates positively with extraversion (r=0.3236) and conscientiousness (r=0.3088), and negatively with neuroticism (r=-0.3368) in the NEO-FFI. The emotion-focused coping style for stressful situations is positively correlated with neuroticism (NEO-FFI) (r=0.4150). In fire brigade officers, As far as personality traits were concerned, fire brigade officers scored relatively high in extraversion, conscientiousness and low in neuroticism and were likely to demonstrate the task-oriented coping style for stressful situations. Lower level of perseveration and high level of briskness and endurance were associated with emotion-focused coping style for stressful situations. Similarly, the tendency to focus on emotions experienced in stressful situations were associated with high level of neuroticism in the study group.

A study was carried out involving persons representing high-anxious, low-anxious and repressor types according to the classification of Weinberger, Davidson & Schwartz (1979), selected using the Marlowe–Crowne Social Desirability Scale and the trait anxiety scale of the Spielberger State–Trait Anxiety Inventory. In seeking indicators of anxiety in repressors and high-anxious groups, the authors decided to analyse the level of dogmatism observed in utterance texts. The research was intended to determine whether styles of coping with threatening stimuli condition the level of dogmatism, which was regarded as a cognitive defence mechanism against anxiety. The method of formal analysis of texts (speeches given by the participants in a situation of social exposure) was used to identify their level of dogmatism, measured using the Dogmatism Quotient developed by Ertel. The highest value of the Dogmatism Quotient was recorded for repressors, and the lowest for the low-anxious subjects; a similar pattern was also observed for certain particular dimensions of dogmatism. Statistically significant differences in the level of dogmatism were found between the repressor and low-anxious groups and between the high-anxious and low-anxious groups. The study confirmed the previously discovered pattern whereby repressors exhibit more similarities to high-anxious than to low-anxious persons.

Opis:
BackgroundEmployees in the aviation sector constitute an especially interesting professional group due to a lack of empirical data on their psychological functioning, and the fact that this industry is currently experiencing a phase of dynamic development. However, taking into consideration the automation and specific qualities of the sector, human resources should be given much more attention as they are constantly challenged and face diverse difficulties at work while cooperating in various organic and non-organic teams.Material and MethodsThe study included 326 employees of Pyrzowice (Poland), Szymany (Poland), and Košice (Slovakia) airports (however, people employed at the Polish airports were predominant, N = 250). The average age of the participants was 39.3 years, and the sample was predominantly male (N = 278, 85.3%). During the research procedure, the following questionnaires were used: the Feeling of Threat in the Workplace Questionnaire, the Feeling of Stress Questionnaire, the 10-Item Personality Inventory, and the Mini-COPE Stress Inventory.ResultsThe regression analysis indicated that personality variables did not allow for predicting the level of stress. However, the helplessness-oriented style (β = 0.191, p = 0.004), avoidant behaviors (β = 0.244, p < 0.001), and the feeling of threat (β = 0.147, p = 0.009) were significant predictors of the feeling of stress, and their high level corresponded with a higher level of stress. The final model explained 23% of the total variance in the feeling of stress.ConclusionsBased on the results, practical recommendations should concern developing employees’ skills related to monitoring stressors and strengthening proactivity in difficult or threatening situations. Such proactive strategies may decrease the tendency to use avoidant and helplessness-oriented behaviors that may cause a higher level of stress perceived by employees. Also, the authors recommend providing training and support using some cognitive behavioral techniques because it seems that the regular application of those methods supports the development of agency and control while facing challenging situations. Opis:
Although much research on emotional intelligence (EI) and coping with stress has been performed in recent years, little is known about these dimensions of individual differences in both foster and biological parents. The main purpose of this study is to examine emotional intelligence and coping styles in foster parents in comparison to biological parents. The study included 124 individual participants aged between 30 and 64 years old (M = 45.18, SD = 8.72), including foster parents (n = 63, 50.81%) and biological parents (n = 61, 49.19%). The cross-sectional survey study was conducted using the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT) and Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS). In comparison to biological parents, foster parents demonstrated significantly higher levels of emotional intelligence (EI), more frequently used task-oriented coping styles, and less often pursued emotional and avoidant coping strategies to deal with stress. EI was positively correlated with task-oriented coping and negatively so with emotional coping. Hierarchical regression analysis indicated that EI was a strong predictor of task-oriented coping. Training focused on the enhancement of both EI and coping with stress should be considered as an effective way to improve parents’ competence.

Opis:
Introduction: Stress associated with inevitable hysterectomy affects an ever increasing number of women. A person’s ability to cope depends on individual predisposition which is closely related to sense of coherence (SOC) and individual coping style. Aim of paper: To define possible associations between SOC level and type of coping style in women after hysterectomy as a determinant of recovery and successful functioning in society and family. Material and methods: Analysis encompassed data of 97 women after hysterectomy, treated at the Department of Gynecology, Obstetrics and Pathology of Gestation at Dr Emil Warmiński Memorial Hospital, Bydgoszcz. SOC was assessed by Antonovsky SOC-29 questionnaire and effectiveness of coping was measured by Endler and Parker CISS questionnaire, in its Polish version developed by Szczepaniak, Strelau and Wrześniewski. Results: SOC score was within average limits (134.46 pts). High scores were noticed in the area of resourcefulness. Most patients presented “task-oriented” and “emotional” styles of coping with health problems. Patients with higher global SOC level usually resorted to task-oriented coping style while those with lower SOC level mostly resorted to emotional style. Conclusions: our results may be used to develop psychoeducational programs and to plan care of women at different stages of their treatment.
Materiał i metoda badawcza: Przebadano 97 kobiet leczonych na Oddziale Ginekologii, Położnictwa i Patologii Ciąży Wielospecjalistycznego Szpitala Miejskiego im. dra Emila Warmińskiego w Bydgoszczy, w związku z wykonaniem u nich operacji usunięcia macicy. Poczucie koherencji ocenione było za pomocą kwestionariusza orientacji życiowej SOC-29 autorstwa Antonovsky’ego, a pomiar radzenia sobie w sytuacjach stresowych – kwestionariuszem CISS Endlera i Parkera, w polskiej adaptacji autorstwa Szczepaniaka, Strelaua i Wrześniewskiego. Wyniki: Poczucie koherencji mieściło się w przedziale wyników przeciętnych (134,46 pkt). Wysokie wartości osiągnięto w zakresie zaradności. Badane preferowały styl zadaniowy i emocjonalny radzenia sobie z problemem zdrowotnym. Osoby o wyższym poziomie globalnego poczucia koherencji (sens of coherence, SOC) częściej stosowały styl skoncentrowany na zadaniu, a badane o niższym poziomie preferowały styl emocjonalny. Wnioski: Otrzymane wyniki mogą posłużyć do opracowywania programów psychoedukacyjnych oraz planowania opieki nad kobietą, na różnych etapach stosowanej terapii.

Opis:
Working as medical rescuer is associated with many stressors, mainly associated with exposure to life-threatening situations, human suffering, disease and death, but also to interpersonal conflicts and considerable work burden. These factors contribute to the development of burnout syndrome in medical rescuers. Published papers highlight the mediating role of coping styles on the development of burnout syndrome. The aim of this paper is to assess coping styles and correlations between them and severity of burnout symptoms in medical rescuers and students of emergency medicine, depending on job seniority in this profession. Overall, 148 persons participated in the study, aged from 19 to 47 years. These were part-time (extramural) students of 1st and 3rd year of emergency medicine, working as medical rescuers (n=66) and students not working as medical rescuers (n=82). The following instruments were implemented: Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). No significant differences were noticed in any aspect of professional burnout: emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and sense of personal achievement, between students working as medical rescuers and those not exercising this job. Students of emergency medicine who do not exercise this job, more often implement coping style focused on emotions and avoidance. However, the older were persons interviewed, and the longer they worked as medical rescuer, the more frequently they resorted to task-focused coping style. No correlation was noticed between age and job seniority of persons examined and severity of burnout syndrome.
Zastosowano następujące metody badań: Kwestionariusz Radzenia Sobie w Sytuacjach Stresowych (CISS) i Kwestionariusz Wypalenia Zawodowego (MBI). Nie stwierdzono istotnych różnic w zakresie żadnego z wymiarów wypalenia zawodowego: emocjonalnego wyczerpania, depersonalizacji i poczucia dokonań osobistych pomiędzy studentami pracującymi i niepracującymi w zawodzie ratownika medycznego.

This paper contains an analysis of the determinants of predispositions of individuals to cope with stress in adulthood, very likely shaped in childhood. The theoretical part defines stress and ways to cope with it and describes the conclusions reached to date of studies on attachment styles determinants to cope with stress. Presents the results of the author’s own research showing the preferences of choosing different strategies to cope with stress depending on an attachment style shaped in childhood. The research conducted in 2013 and 2014 was participated by 180 women and 180 men aged 20-40 (M = 28.99, SD = 4.23), living in the Zachodniopomorskie and Lubuskie Voivodeships in Poland. Participants filled in questionnaires defining their ways of coping with stress and their attachment style. The research results obtained show that the respondents who the most frequently manifest active coping with stress and seeking support in difficult situations come from families that built in their child a secure attachment style. Helplessness and avoidant behaviours are more often evinced in stressful situations by the respondents brought up in families who built an anxiety-ambivalent and an avoidance attachment style.
