This paper studies the influence of different cooling technologies on the power density of a traction machine for heavy-duty distribution transport. A prototype induction machine is built with a housing cooling jacket, potted end-windings, entire winding cooling, and shaft cooling. Electromagnetic finite element and thermal lumped-parameter models are parameterized and verified using test bench measurements. The influence of each thermal resistance along the heat paths is studied and discussed. The results are used for studying different cooling technologies. The results indicate an improvement of the continuous power density up to 108% using shaft cooling and up to 15.6% using entire winding cooling.

The electrical energy consumption in Iraq has increased sharply in the past few years. Modern energy efficient technologies are desperately needed for the national energy policy. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the various cooling systems, using the readily available solar energy to cool down the buildings in Iraq during hot weather days. This paper presents the best solar cooling system which can be installed in Iraq for solar cooling. It also focuses on the type of thermally driven system which can be used for solar cooling. It is fact that many buildings in Iraq are designed far away from being energy efficient, hence this paper focuses on the standards which can be developed and can be used in the future on residential buildings from the energy point of view, with a suggestion to establish such solar cooling projects in Iraq. Systems have been used successfully in northern Europe and a number of studies have demonstrated that solar energy can be used to drive the system in this region. However, to date, desiccant cooling has not been used in Iraq. This paper presents the results of a study, in which a solar desiccant cooling model will use to evaluate the potential for using solar power to drive a desiccant cooling system in Iraq. The study demonstrates that solar desiccant cooling is feasible in Iraq, provided that the latent heat gains experienced are not excessive. However, if the relative humidity experienced are too high then desiccant cooling becomes impracticable simply because the regeneration temperatures required are excessive.

The paper presents and describes cooling systems mainly used in industrial plants specialized in production based on injection moulding machines. Each solution is rated taking into account investment costs, technical complexity, exploitation costs and system flexibility in general. With regard to dynamically changing law regulations linked to refrigeration installations, mainly F-Gases Act, during optimal system selection new restrictions were respected. This approach ensures long-term exploitation without additional complications. The paper contains characteristics of cooled facility, i.e. production plastic plant using injection moulding machines, presents specifics for this type of application where two extremely different cooling processes are placed in parallel. One task is heat collection from injection moulds to ensure short production time and produced details recurrence, the second is keeping hydraulic oil temperature between temperature limits – this process ensures proper oil viscosity and prevents its premature wear.

Solid-state thermoelectric elements, such as thermoelectric (TE) modules, can be used as cooling devices. Small-sized TE modules, characterized by: lack of moving parts, no required refrigerants application as well as variable possible installation and operation positions, allow, in several specified cases, achieving the advantage in cooling process over the conventional refrigeration devices. This paper presents the results of the preliminary numerical determination of energetic efficiency of thermoelectric cooling system, applied for cooling a small-scale experimental room. The heat exchangers used in the cooling system consisted of heat sinks and radiators installed on the both sides of the TE module. The numerical assessment included in this paper, based on a 3D model reflecting the experimental room and thermoelectric cooling system, allowed determining the relation between TE module power supply characteristics and cooling effects, as well as time-related temperature distribution inside the modeled experimental room. The commercial modeling software FLUENT, ANSYS 12.0 by ANSYS Inc. was applied in numerical calculations. The results of the performed laboratory studies were used as a basis for model development, required input data, initial and boundary conditions. The results of laboratory tests showed the influence of amperage of power supply on the efficiency of cooling characteristics, as well as distribution of air temperature inside the experimental room. Calibration and validation of the developed model was also based on the results of laboratory experiment. The obtained results of numerical calculations showed the influence of amperage of power supply on efficiency of cooling characteristics as well as distribution of air temperature inside the experimental room.

The current practice in the efforts aiming to improve cooling conditions is to place emphasis on the application of non-stationary flow effects, such as the unsteady jet heat transfer or the heat transfer intensification by means of a high-amplitude oscillatory motion. The research presented in this paper follows this direction. A new concept is put forward to intensify the heat transfer in the cooling channels with the use of an acoustic wave generator. The acoustic wave is generated by a properly shaped fixed cavity or group of cavities. The sound generated by the cavity is a phenomenon analysed in various publications focused on the methods of its reduction. The phenomenon is related to the feedback mechanism between the vortices flowing from the leading edge and the acoustic waves generated within the cavity. The acoustic waves are generated by the interaction between the vortices and the cavity walls. Strong instabilities can be observed within a certain range of the free flow velocities. The investigations presented in this paper are oriented towards the use of the phenomenon for the purposes of the heat transfer process intensification. The first part of the work presents the numerical model used in the analysis, as well as its validation and comparison with empirical relations. The numerical model is constructed using the commercial CFD Ansys CFX-16.0 commercial program. The next part includes determining of the relationship between the amplitude of the acoustic oscillations and the cooling conditions within the cavity. The calculations are performed for various flow conditions.

The paper presents investigation into the single water microjet surface cooling producing evaporating film. Reported tests were conducted under steady state conditions. Experiments were conducted using the nozzle size of 70 and 100 [my]m respectively. In the course of investigations obtained were experimental relations between heat flux and wall superheating. It was proved that the phenomenon is similar to that of pool boiling but the boiling curves are showing a smaller value of critical heat flux (CHF) that the stagnant pool boiling. Values of CHF are also reduced with decreasing liquid subcooling. Theoretical model of surface cooling by evaporating microjet impingement in the stagnation point was described theoreticaly. Results of experiments were compared with predictions by the model showing a good consistency.

The article includes the results obtained by the fluid flow simulation through a single candy cooling unit. The aim of this investigation was to verify the tabletop construction. It was found that there is a necessity for redesigning the original construction. The introduced modifications allowed reduction of the stagnation areas nearby the turn canals and the heat exchanger corners.
Komputerowe badania symulacyjne przepływu cieczy chłodzącej w aspekcie budowy konstrukcji modułu chłodzącego W artykule zamieszczono wyniki przeprowadzonych badań symulacyjnych przepływu cieczy chłodzącej na przekroju pojedynczego modułu chłodzącego stołu do schładzania mas cukierniczych. Badania przeprowadzono na potrzebę weryfikacji konstrukcji stołu. Wykazano, że zaistniała konieczność wprowadzenia zmian w konstrukcji, które pozwoli na zmniejszenie stref stagnacji przepływu w okolicach kanałów nawrotnych oraz narożników płaszcza wodnego.

The electrical performance and the productivity of PV module depend on two main parameters, i.e. the radiation intensity and the cell operating temperature. The module electrical efficiency and productivity are significantly reduced as its temperature increases. Accordingly, cooling of PV modules is one of the most effective techniques to obtain higher efficiency and productivity as well as to reduce the degradation modes of PV modules due to high temperatures. This research work presents an experimental study carried out to investigate the effect of PV module cooling on the performance of PV module under Irbid city (Jordan) climate conditions. It was found that the electrical efficiency and the productivity of the PV modules were approximately enhanced by 14%. Therefore, water cooling of the PV modules is essential to enhance their performance.

In the past decades, many studies have proposed urban greening as a method to mitigate the rising temperatures in cities and urban heat islands. The cooling effect of urban green spaces can be divided into two components; cooling intensity and cooling extension. These two components are affected by different factors. This paper provides a review of research on the impact of urban greening on temperature and on the parameters that have an effect on that. Based on this review, two categories that have an effect on cooling intensity and cooling extension were identified: internal factors and external factors. These play an important role in the effectiveness of urban green spaces. As internal factors or indexes, the following were extracted; Size index, Shape index, Vegetation species and Tree canopy coverage are the most common indexes in most of the studies. The external factors can be divided into climate and surrounding properties. A discussion of the reviewed studies reflects the impact of each index on the cooling intensity and cooling extension. The existing methods and techniques for determining these indexes have also been considered in this paper. As such, this study is helpful for designers and planners for decision-making during the design phase.

This study focuses on dehumidification technologies. It identifies the different types of dehumidification technologies and seeks to understand each technology’s competitive advantages. On the various technologies, the study concentrates on three standard systems. The systems are the solid desiccant-wheel, solid desiccant air conditioner, and the liquid desiccant dehumidification system. The study establishes the characteristics of each of them and how they can be preferred. The study also looks at the applicability of the technologies to different uses and discusses in details application in hotels, supermarkets, and office blocks. In these application areas, the study focuses on benefits and possible consequences for the non-adoption of such systems. The study establishes reasons to support the relevance of this technology to those essential industries. This study concludes by looking at current developments in dehumidification technology. A focus is made on the drivers for the advancement and a discussion of some of the recent improvements. The study adopts this discussion to help advise on the future of dehumidification technology.

In this study, the heating and cooling conditions of the greenhouses in Antalya were examined and suggestions were made for solutions of the problems that emerged. The Simple Random Sampling Method was used in determining the number of enterprises to be surveyed. The number of enterprises to be surveyed was determined as 246 with a 90 % confidence limit and 10 % error rate. It was determined that the greenhouses enterprises surveyed were heating at 96.34%. It has been determined that the most commonly preferred type of heater in the region is the stove and that the stove is heated only to protect the product from frost damage. In accordance with the data obtained from the research area, it was determined that one stove was used for 1000 m2 greenhouse floor area. It has been determined that 92.68% of the surveyed greenhouse enterprises are trying to reduce the excess temperature inside greenhouse by natural ventilation. It was determined that both the sidewall and roof ventilation were made at 45.93% of the greenhouse enterprises where examined in the research area. It has been determined that the ratio of ventilation area to greenhouse floor area changes between 10 and 15 in 32.52% of greenhouse enterprises and this ratio changes between 15 and 20 in 41.46%. As a result, the heating and cooling properties and problems encountered of the greenhouse enterprises in the study area were determined and necessary precautions to be taken.

In current conditions, great attention is paid to the quality of parts, which is in many ways determined by finishing operations of mechanical treatment, with surface grinding being the most widespread. Grinding process efficiency, abrasive tool wear intensity, machined surface quality and other features of grinding process depend on properties of the environment, where the cutting process takes place. Forced changing of conditions of this environment is one of the ways to control and optimize the grinding process, which can be reached due to finding new technological decisions. One of the most promising directions to solve this problem is the process of face grinding with discontinuous grinding tool and supply of cooling fluid or air in the cutting zone directly. Carried analysis of features of face grinding has shown that heat density can be decreased by the usage by grooved wheels with vortex air cooling or by supply of cooling-lubricant technological fluid. Obtained dependences of temperature field of part surface during grinding establish the influence of the length of working shoulders and grooves, vortex tubes number, outflow rate, temperature and flow rate of cold vortex flow of air. These data provide conscious control over the process of discontinuous face grinding by changing wheel grain size and grinding speed.

This paper presents the influence of cooling water regulation on power plant net efficiency. It was examined whether, for the non-nominal low-pressure turbine load, it is justified to reduce the cooling water pump load, and how it would affect the unit net efficiency. Calculations for two types of power units were carried out: with condensing and extraction-condensing turbine. The tested condensing power plant consists of three surface condensers. The calculation included four condensers’ connections set up on the cooling water side to check how the cooling water system pressure drop affects the net unit performance. The result has confirmed that implementing serial connection decreases net efficiency when cooling water flow regulation is used, but the mixed connection should be applied when pump load is not controlled. It was proved that the cooling water flow control gives a profit for both units. Net efficiency for combined heat and power plant can be improved by 0.1–0.5 pp, the gain is remarkable below 60% of the low-pressure turbine part load. Flow control implementation in the unit with condensing turbine water control gives a similar profit just below 80% of the turbine load. Next, an influence of the additional limitations of a cooling water system (minimal total pump head, cooling tower) affecting the feasibility of implementing the water control has been considered. Applying a multi-cell forced draft cooling tower does not have a significant impact on results, but when a natural draft cooling tower is used, the flow control range is strongly reduced.

In this paper, the possibility of use of a DEC type air conditioning system, using solar energy, in Polish climatic conditions Polish, as an alternative to traditional systems based on compressor refrigeration equipment, was analyzed. At the beginning of the work, attention was paid to how important it is for users to maintain thermal comfort conditions and how these conditions can be determined. It also shows why the DEC system can be a good solution for the cases under consideration. In the next part of the paper, the analyzed system is described, presenting the individual processes of humid air transformation taking place in it, in which devices these processes can take place and how they were modeled in further calculations. Modeling the operation of the DEC system was based mainly on determining the efficiency of individual devices, i.e. the effectiveness of the processes taking place in them and the use of a psychometric graph. Similarly, the method of calculating the useful heat that can be obtained from solar collectors under known conditions is presented. For this purpose, meteorological data and the theory of similarity in heat transfer were used. In the next part of the work, an example of a calculation cycle was presented, along with the next steps of applying to the psychometric graph points corresponding to the states of moist air at individual points of the DEC system. On the basis of such calculation cycles, performed for different values of outdoor air parameters, the relationships of the obtained cooling power, the power supplied for adsorber regeneration, EER, temperature and relative humidity of the supply air to rooms, from the temperature and relative humidity of the outside air. Next, the calculation process for determining the useful heat obtained from solar collectors is presented. On the basis of several such processes, the average conditions of heat collection from the collector were determined, on the basis of which the amount of energy obtained from solar radiation was determined on the scale of the entire summer period. On the basis of this analysis, surpluses and shortages of energy obtained from collectors on individual days of the considered period were determined. In conclusion, it was stated that despite the fairly good cooperation of the system with solar collectors and its simple construction, the DEC system cannot be an alternative to compressor refrigeration equipment. This is mainly due to the unfavorable level of relative humidity in Polish climatic conditions, which does not allow the device to achieve the appropriate temperature of the air supplied to the rooms.
