Urban Co-operative Banks
Efficiency
Opis:
Aim: Urban Co-operative Banks are a small segment albeit significant constituent in the multi-stage credit delivery mechanism of the banking sector in India. These banks have an organisational, managerial and regulatory structure different from commercial banks. It is, therefore, of interest to study the efficiency with which these banks perform their core banking and off balance sheet activities. This paper focuses on the measurement of efficiency in the conduct of core banking and off balance sheet activities for the period 2013-14 to 2015-16.   Design / Research methods: The main idea is to employ the parametric Stochastic Frontier Analysis and the non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis to measure the efficiency of Urban Co-operative Banks. We estimate two models for both the frontier methods, Model A examines the efficiency in core banking activity and Model B for the off balance sheet activities. The analysis of super efficiency undertaken helps identify the most efficient bank while the quartile analysis provides an insight into the distribution of efficiency (for both Models A and B). A Tobit model (for both Models A and B) has also been estimated to identify the determinants of efficiency.   Conclusions / findings: We find that Urban Co-operative banks display a higher mean efficiency in core banking activities (Model A) as compared to the off-balance sheet activities (Model B) and this finding has been reiterated by the frequency distribution of efficiency for both the frontier methods. The difference is the mean efficiency obtained for Models A and B is much wider under the stochastic frontier analysis. The analysis of super efficiency points out that of the three banks efficient under Model A and five efficient banks under Model only one bank is common to both the models. The quartile analysis highlights that 38.9 percent of the UCBs are ranked in the lower two quartiles of efficiency. The Tobit regression model has identified deposits and loans disbursed as significant determinants of efficiency for both models.   Originality / value of the article: This study contributes significantly to the existent gap in the literature on efficiency measurement of banks in India by focussing on efficiency measurement among urban co-operative banks who play an important role in urban financial inclusion.   Implications of the research: This study is the only study that has measured the efficiency in operations of Urban Co-operative Banks and can hence provide an insight into the operations of these banks. It can also help individual banks in taking appropriate measures to improve efficiency.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The paper proposes a methodology to study individuals and their institutions by the study of their lifestyles. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: Following Wojtyla’s methodology of studying the person on the basis of his or her actions and conduct, I decided to use similar methodology to answer the question: Are the 19th century Co‑operative Values and Principles still pertinent in the complex economy of the 21st century, and, if so, how can we operationalise them to become vibrant guidelines not only in contemporary business, but also in improving our everyday lives? THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The overview of the research on lifestyle in ethnography, marketing, lifestyle and occupational medicine, and finally criminology shows that unlike values, lifestyle can more easily be operationalized and measured. We both expose our lifestyle and are exposed to the lifestyles of others. Some status‑based lifestyles spread like viruses creating a pandemic of consumerism. These product‑based lifestyles are in complete opposition to the person‑oriented co‑operative lifestyle. RESEARCH RESULTS: An Exposure Model of Lifestyle allows new conceptualization of the isomorphism research. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The agency based model of lifestyle may be used for constructing diagnostic tools and investigating the very essence of personal motives both in private and work life. This model is supposed to help to investigate to what degree an individual’s lifestyle impacts the functioning of a participative company and whether it is reflected in the company’s success.

Co-operative Credit unions
Banking Services
Households
Opis:
Co-operative Credit Unions in Poland have existed since 1992 and are constantly extending their economic potential and their share in the financial services market. The CCUs have a status of a legal person. These banks are non-profit institutions which are created to implement the idea of mutual financial assistance. In order to use their services a potential client has to be a member of one of the CCUs. The members of the CCU can only be people living in the same area or having the same occupation or belonging to the same organization. CCUs offer their own members basic financial services: running a standard bank account, reception of deposits, provision of loans, clearing and settlement of accounts, sale of participation units in investment funds, handling of individual pension accounts, and sale of insurance policies and emission of payment cards. They can also run the accounts of civic associations and people involved in business activity. At the end of 2006 there were 70 credit unions in Poland which together possessed 1584 agencies providing services to their members. The CCUs enlarge their share in the national market of deposits and loans for households, but this share is still of a modest size. At the end of 2005 the assets of CCUs in relation to assets of the banking sector amounted to a mere 0.9%, while in relation to assets of cooperative banks which are their direct competitors, it amounted to 16.3%.

Opis:
The article discusses the current state, legislative threats connected with the preparation of the Polish cooperative act and selected legislative proposals. The legal status of Polish cooperatives is unsatisfactory. The basic assumptions, structure and content of the regulations, which are of archaic and residual nature, are defective.A new cooperative law will not solve the problem if the existing legislation is merely amended. Another danger may stem from the defective definition of the essence and status of co-operatives in social market economy. The forthcoming cooperative law should be limited to general issues which apply tom co-operatives. Specific acts should govern individual co-operatives, e.g. credit cooperatives. The law should guarantee a broad statutory freedom. It is very important to have a precise yet a comprehensive definition of the purpose of the co-operative. The Finnish cooperative law provides a good example in this regard: “The purpose of a co-operative shall be to promote the economic and business activities of its members by means of the pursuit of economic activity where the members make use of the services provided by the co-operative or services that co-operative arranges for, directly, indirectly or otherwise.” Any future regulation should not limit the possibility of co-operatives becoming members of commercial companies.Differences between legal entities are becoming blurred, and this also applies o co-operatives. Therefore, co-operatives should take over some solutions from typical commercial companies, such as the marketability of shares.

Opis:
This study analysed the effects of cooperative member characteristics on income generation among smallholder farmers in Chibombo district of Central Zambia using logistic regression from a sample size of 398 co-operative members. The aim of the study was to analyze factors affecting income generation among small-holder famers with membership in agricultural cooperatives, and to identify factors that increase their income. Data were collected in May 2020 using a questionnaire. The empirical data indicated that income increased when there were increases in the cultivated area, primary education and cooperative membership period of 5–10 years but decreased with marriage, being widowed and a farming experience period of 5–10 years. The other factors had no significant effect. Thus, the study concludes that increasing cultivated area, duration of cooperative membership and attending at least primary education would better income generation among cooperative members.

Co-operative society businesses are one of the major contributions to the Sri Lankan economy. The multipurpose co-operative societies provide several services to people. The study was based on the managers of the retail stores of multipurpose co-operative societies in the northern central province of Sri Lanka, as they have suffered losses for several years. The study assessed the impact of employee job attitudes on organizational performance with selected managers as a study sample. A survey questionnaire was used as an instrument to collect data. The study was conducted to measure and identify variables. The data collected were fitted to the created model. Model validation was assessed using the validity test of Cronbach’s alpha. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were used in the analysis. A correlation coefficient and a regression analysis were used to analyze the dependencies between employee job attitudes and organizational performance to evaluate the hypotheses. All the hypotheses developed in the study were positively confirmed. The results of the study confirmed that managers have negative attitudes towards their employment, which has an impact on organizational performance. The study recommends that co-operative societies should have mechanisms to assess employee job attitudes and improve the quality of work-life to enhance organizational performance.

Opis:
The paper presents a participatory pattern of conducting research for social science. A few projects based on the idea of ‘co-operative research’ have been funded within the 7th EU Framework Programme. Among them was the project “Facilitating Alternative Agro-Food Networks – Stakeholder Perspective on Research Needs” (FAAN). One of its goals was to test the potential of the co-operative approach in social research practice. This paper aims to present and discuss the experiences from the project to reflect upon the usefulness of cooperative research as a scientific innovation and a new research paradigm, as well as to propose its reframing based on the results of the project. The article ends with practical recommendations concerning management or research projects in a co-operative manner, stressing the need of competencies for team leaders in micromanagement of heterogeneous research teams.

Opis:
Safety of navigation is especially challenging and critical when a ship approaches and manoeuvres in harbour areas. Improving the safety especially in the first and last phase of a voyage is crucial and requires measures addressing both the human and technical-technological elements including support systems that shall provide human operators with information relevant for decision making. The present situation is characterized by the introduction of numerous sophisticated technical and support systems often integrated with several components becoming increasingly complex. On the users end, changes are not that obvious and not that rapid as for technology. However, new approaches are under development or already in use. They are characterized by applying and adapting solutions from other transport modes. In this way, tasks and procedures on ships, that are highly safety-relevant and containing high portions of manoeuvring activities have been changed to high back-up procedures as in air planes. For port manoeuvres e.g. the system of pilot/co-pilot was introduced on ferries in a sense that one officer is operating and the other is monitoring and checking the safe performance. In cruise shipping, new structures replacing the traditional rank-based with a flexible system based on job functions. This system creates a kind of a safety net around the person conning the vessel. Each operation is cross checked before execution by one or two other persons. The first obvious consequence is higher costs due to doubling personnel. On the other hand there is also a need for a technology appropriately supporting the checking officer by enabling her or him to monitor what the conning officer is doing. “Fast-Time Manoeuvring Simulation Technology” (FTS) developed at the Institute for Innovative Ship Simulation and Maritime Systems (ISSIMS) has huge potential to fulfil this task. FTS calculates within one second of computing time up to 1000 seconds of real manoeuvring time by a very complex ship-dynamic simulation model for rudder, engine and thruster manoeuvres. It enables prompt prediction of all manoeuvres carried out by the conning officer for the observing officer, too. Predictions of path and motion status allow all officers to see whether the manoeuvring actions have at least the correct tendency or indicating the need for corrections. This new type of support is called Simulation-Augmented Manoeuvring Design and Monitoring (SAMMON) – it allows not only overlooking the next manoeuvring segment ahead but also for the following or even for series of manoeuvring segments. This technology has been used within two research projects: COSINUS (Co-operative Ship Operation in Integrated Maritime Traffic Systems) set out for implementing FTS into integrated ship bridges and to also communicate the manoeuvre plans and display it to VTS centres. Within the European project MUNIN (Maritime Unmanned Navigation through Intelligence in Networks) this technology has been used to investigate if it is possible to steer autonomous ships, in case it would be necessary.
