Opis:
Activated carbon was oxidised with concentrated nitric acid and impregnated with urea to form nitrogen-containing groups. Such a support was impregnated with cobalt, copper or silver nitrates to obtain catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia. Infrared spectra confirmed the formation of carboxylic and other organic oxygen-containing groups during oxidation. Nitrogen-containing species resulted from urea thermal decomposition. The metal-containing samples were hydrophilic. Cobalt and copper were present in the samples as small Co3O4 and CuO crystallites, while silver occurred in the form of large metallic crystallites, as seen from the X-ray diffraction patterns. Low temperature N2 sorption revealed that all samples were microporous solids, and the chemical and thermal treatment did not change their textural properties. The copper admixture caused the highest NO conversion, but worsened the selectivity and thermal stability of functionalised carbon support.

Catalytic properties of activated carbons oxidized, treated with N-compounds, and promoted withcopper were studied in selective catalytic reduction NOXby ammonia (NH3-SCR). The modificationof the catalysts consisted of a series of steps (pre-oxidation of activated carbon, impregnation with urea, impregnation with copper). The physicochemical properties of the obtained samples were determinedusing X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, and low-temperature N2sorption. The modification withcopper improved the catalytic activity and stability of the catalysts. All the functionalized carbon dopedwith copper reached more than 90% of NO conversion and CO2did not exceed 240 ppm at 220◦C.The sample doped with 5 wt.% Cu had the maximum NO conversion of 98% at 300◦C. The maximumN2O concentration detected for the same sample was only 55 ppm, which confirmed its selectivity.

Investigations on operational parameters of afterburning chambers included in metallurgical thermal equipment have been presented. The effects of temperature and modernization within the firing system on concentrations of nitrogen oxides and carbon oxide have been analysed. To ensure effective afterburning of gases generated during technological processes and minimisation of CO levels, the temperature in the afterburning chamber should be elevated to approximately 1053-1973 K with evenly distributed temperature within the flame. This may lead to slightly higher (by about 0 mg/m3 n ) NOx ) NOx concentrations.

Opis:
Reducing air pollutant emissions and energy consumption, as a necessary step to make ports more sustainable, is one of the crucial tasks and challenges of port management. Some of the port strategies to meet the term “green port” usually include reducing fuel consumption from vessels and vehicles in ports. This paper estimates the emission inventory of maritime traffic for the cargo Port of Zadar. For this research, emissions from cargo ships are estimated in the period from January 01. 2018 until October 01. 2019. The “bottom-up” methodology has been applied for estimating emissions, which includes detailed data on the ship’s characteristics (engine power, the load factor, fuel type, the emission factor) and time spent cruising and hotelling. The emissions from cargo ships have been estimated for three ship’s activities: cruising in the reduced speed zone, hotelling (time spent at berth), and maneuvering. The emission results (tons/year) refer to the pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx), particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOC), and carbon dioxide (CO2) which represents greenhouse gases. Estimating emission inventory is the first step for planning effective port air quality control. Some recommendations for reducing emissions in port areas are emphasized in this paper.

Opis:
The objective of the present study was to experimentally investigate environmental emissions and performance of a stationary type diesel engine fuelled with biodiesels derived from two different feedstocks; one is more unsaturated (rice bran biodiesel) and the other one is more saturated in nature (palm biodiesel) and compare with petrodiesel. Tests were conducted in a single cylinder, air cooled, direct injection diesel engine. From the experimental results, it was found that the nitrogen oxides emissions were higher with biodiesel fuels. The hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions of palm biodiesel were lower than the other test fuels. The smoke emission of rice bran biodiesel was the lowest compared to the rest of the fuels. A considerable reduction in thermal efficiency was found with both the biodiesels when compared to diesel. From the present study, it is concluded that the biodiesels derived from palm and rice bran oils with their different fatty acid composition, show lower exhaust emissions and closer performance characteristics to diesel.

Opis:
This articleexamines, based on the availableinformation and authors’ self-assessments, theenvironmental impact of turbine engine exhaust gases effect on the environment in the airport space during engines flight phases in the landing and takeoff cycle (LTO). The attention of aviation professionals is drawn to the fact that the amount of exhaust from the turbine engine is so significant that it may adversely change the ambient air at the airport. Consequently, increased emission level of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) during engine start-up and idle may pose a threat to the health of ramp staff. Also, high emission levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) during takeoff, climb, cruise and descent is not without importance for the environment around the airport space. The paper gives CO2, HC, CO and NOx emission estimations based on ICAO Engine Emission Data Bank and the number of passenger operations at a medium-sized airport. It also provides calculation results of aircraft CO2, HC, CO and NOx emission using average times of aircraft maneuvers taken from aircraft Flight Data Recorder (FDR) in the LTO cycle various aircraft types at the airport. The latter, based on actual maneuvering times, lead to significantly reduced estimates of toxic exhaust gas emission volumes.

Gaseous emissions during thermal animal waste treatment in a meat production plant have been determined. A dry flue gas system with a multisectional bag filter was installed at a meat production plant. Animal waste was incinerated in a rotary kiln, the capacity of the plant was 700 kg/h. The average thirty-minute (1352 samples) emission values of volatile dust, total organic carbon (TOC), hydrogen chloride (HCl), hydrogen fluoride (HF), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and carbon oxide (CO) were obtained during a study period of 1 month. Specific samples were collected to determine dioxin, furane, heavy metal, mercury, cadmium and thallium concentrations. Histograms of the obtained results were prepared, and the results were compared with the permissible emission levels defined by the European Union. Additionally, justification was provided when the observed values exceeded the levels defined by the European Union.

The impact of periodic feeding mode on the concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NO, NOx) in the flue gas downstream the boiler was analyzed during firing of a mixture of sunflower husk and wood pellets in an overfeed furnace. The mixtures containing 100, 70 and 50 wt. %, of sunflower husk pellets were supplied to the boiler in two feeding modes: 1 s of operation 4 s of stand-by and 1s of operation 6 s of stand-by. Correlation between pollutant concentrations and the temperature in the combustion chamber was evaluated. The following concentrations of CO for various feeding modes and sunflower husk pellet proportions have been obtained: 1:6,100% - 6150 mg/m3,1:6,70% - 3360 mg/m3, 1:6, 50% - 2600 mg/m3, 1:4,100% - 4580 mg/m3,1:4, 70% - 2570 mg/m3, 1:4,50% - 870 mg/m3 for 10% O2 content in the flue gas. The study indicates the advisability of reducing the stand-by period in the pellet feeding system.
