The examinations presented in this article aim at illustrating some possibilities of applying instruments for computational fluid dynamics to assess thermal comfort on the example of a lecture hall in the building of the Institute of Building Engineering at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. The obtained results have been subjected to an analysis according to the guidelines provided in the PN-EN ISO 7730:2006 norm. For the air heating system used in the hall, the distributions of velocity, temperature, as well as the PMV and PDD indices have been subjected to an analysis, with a particular focus on the optimal temperature of the air inflow.

To ensure the proper quality of the air and simultaneously improve the comfort of professional drivers or travellers, the cars are fit with air-conditioning (AC) systems. The AC installations, however, quite often create suitable conditions for the development of microbiological agents and become an active emission source of harmful bioaerosols. This study was carried out in 6 municipal buses in large city located in central Poland. In studied vehicles, ozonisation or manual application of chemical disinfectant in a spray form were used for disinfection of AC bus systems. The concentrations of bacteria and fungi in the air collected in buses before the service of their AC installations were 4.3×102 CFU/m3 and 2.4×102 CFU/m3, respectively. After AC service using both tested disinfection methods, the decrease in microbial concentrations in the air of municipal buses was observed. The highest effectiveness of AC cleaning was noted when the chemical disinfectant in a spray form was used. This study revealed that to eliminate microbiological contamination and, by that, decrease the exposure of both drivers and passengers to harmful microbial contaminants, the chemical disinfection of bus AC system should be performed at regular basis.

People more and more time spend in vehicles (cars, trains, planes, buses or subway). This is the reason why the thermal comfort has more and more paid attention. In one hand people try to make comfort (in each situation) whatever they are at home, office or in car. In the other hand the thermal conditions in the cabin of vehicles directly influences on the driver's and passengers safety. The investigations presented in this paper are the part of larger project, which assumes complex modelling of thermal state of car interior. First part assumes creation of CFD model of car interior. Second part is thermodynamic modelling of air cooling unit in order to estimate the influence of basic cabin parameters on the A/C unit COP, power consumption of the unit and fuel consumption of the vehicle. In the paper thermodynamic analysis of car air cooler is presented. Typical refrigerator cycles are studied: one with uncontrolled orifice and non controlled compressor, second with thermostatic controlled expansion valve and externally controlled compressor. The influence of refrigerant charge and the inlet air temperature on the coefficient of performance, exergy efficiency, heat flux and temperature in evaporator and compressor net power were investigated. The impact of improper refrigerant charge on the performance of A/C systems was also checked.

In this paper the possibilities of providing fresh water for sailing vessels based on the example of s/v Dar Modziey are presented. Different methods of obtaining fresh water such as rainwater harvesting, replenishing water tanks at harbours, collecting condensed water from air conditioning systems or producing fresh water from seawater by means of desalination equipment were considered. Vacuum vaporizers (heated by fresh water used as a cooling medium of the main propulsion engines) and osmotic desalinators (using the phenomenon of reverse osmosis) were being taken under consideration. Special focus was put on the quality of water obtained; comparing the methods mentioned and pursuing the best solution both in technical and economic terms. The choice of desalinators was preceded by the analysis of quantity and configuration of pumps and membranes that will guarantee optimum performance. Selection of the manufacturer was determined by costs of purchase, costs of operation and the availability of spare parts and consumables. The osmotic desalinator ended up as the final choice of fresh water producing device on s/v Dar Modziey. Excessive water consumption can be satisfied by replenishing supplies at ports. The paper is concluded with comments and suggestions that can be adapted by a ship owner as a solution for the problem of supplying vessels with fresh water.

The research provides a thermodynamic analysis of the theoretical model of a ventilation and air conditioning heat pump system with the ventilation air cold energy recovery depending on outside air parameters, the recovery efficiency and characteristics of a premise. A confectionery production workshop was taken as a prototype where technological conditions (temperature and humidity) must be maintained during the warm season. Calculations using the method of successive approximations to estimate air parameters at system’s nodal points were conducted. It allowed to determine theoretical refrigeration efficiency of the studied system and proved advantages of heat recuperation for smaller energy consumption. The model can be applied for design of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units which work as a heat pump. The studied system has the highest energy efficiency in the area of relatively low environment temperatures and relative humidity which is suitable for countries with temperate continental climates characterized by low relative humidity.

Thermodynamic analysis of car air cooler is presented in this paper. Typical refrigerator cycles are studied. Opis:
The environment, where people are staying, should provide thermal comfort. It means that the equilibrium of the amount of heat produced in the human body and the amount of heat lost to the environment should be kept. To achieve the suitable conditions of air there the air conditioning, ventilation and heating systems are used. These systems regulate the air parameters and maintain them at the desired level. Designers locate, most commonly, the supply units of air conditioning systems in the ceiling in the central part of the room or near the windows without taking into account the specificity of the premises. However, such an approach may contribute to the lack of thermal comfort. The sensation of air is a very subjective indicator that depends on many variables. The authors of the article made an attempt to analyze the influence of the type of air conditioning system and location of air supply units on the thermal comfort in rooms of different use.
Środowisko, w którym przebywa człowiek powinno zapewniać odczuwanie komfortu. tzn. powinna być zachowana równowaga pomiędzy ilością ciepła wytwarzanego w ciele człowieka a ilością ciepła traconego do otoczenia. Aby uzyskać taki stan powietrza w pomieszczeniach, stosuje się różne systemy wentylacji, klimatyzacji i ogrzewania. Układy te regulują parametry powietrza i utrzymują je na żądanym poziomie. Projektanci lokalizują elementy nawiewne instalacji klimatyzacji najczęściej w suficie w centralnej części pomieszczenia lub przy oknach bez uwzględniania specyfiki pomieszczenia. Jednak takie spojrzenie na instalację może przyczynić się do braku warunków komfortu cieplnego. Postrzeganie stanu powietrza jest bardzo subiektywnym wskaźnikiem zależnym od wielu zmiennych. W artykule podjęto próbę analizy wpływu rodzaju instalacji klimatyzacji oraz rozmieszczenia elementów nawiewnych w pomieszczeniach o różnym przeznaczeniu.

One of the particularly significant threats during exploitation is the climatic threat, which is associated with an increase in the overall costs that are allocated to combating it. The rise in the virgin temperature of the rock mass by 1oC increases the demand for the required cooling capacity to be taken from the air. The publication assesses the effectiveness of the air-conditioning installation by testing its operation on a selected example. The assessment of the efficiency of the air-conditioning installation for a selected hard coal mine showed that none of the five tested coolers achieved the maximum assumed rated power. The use of total power (7.5 MW) in mining excavations was less than 50% and amounted to η = 0.472%. The research showed that the main reason for obtaining low cooling parameters is the inability to locate them in the place of the highest air temperatures. The other problem is an insufficient airflow rate of cooling water supplied to the coolers at too high temperature. The above considerations indicated that the cooling power from built-in air- conditioning systems is not properly and effectively used. Improving the efficiency of its functioning is possible by proceeding research that will eliminate the above factors and by using air conditioning equipment, taking into account the periodic audit of their work to reduce electricity consumption.

Considering vibration of centrifugal air-conditioning chillers at working conditions of 300Hz and 386Hz, a vibration reduction method for centrifugal air-conditioning chillers based on particle damping is proposed. Firstly, the vibration transfer path of the chillers is determined based on dynamic characteristics analysis of the chillers. Secondly, the vibration sensitive area of the compressor is determined by finite element analysis. Then the energy dissipation is calculated by the discrete element method (DEM) to determine the optimal installation scheme of the damper. Finally, the vibration reduction effect of the chillers after arranging the damper is verified by experiments.

Infections related to modern surgical procedures present a difficult problem for contemporary medicine. Infections acquired during surgery represent a risk factor related to therapeutical interventions. Eradication of microorganisms from hospital operating theatre environment may contribute to reduction of infections as the laminar flow air-conditioning considerably reduces the number of microorganisms in the hospital environment. The objective of the study was to evaluate the occurrence of fungi in air-conditioned operating theatre rooms. The study was carried out in one of the hospitals in Kraków during December 2009. Indoor air samples and imprints from the walls were collected from five operating theatre rooms. A total of fifty indoor air samples were collected with a MAS-100 device, and twenty five imprints from the walls were collected using a Count Tact method. Fungal growth was observed in 48 air samples; the average numbers of fungi were within the range of 5–100 c.f.u. in one cubic metre of the air. Fungi were detected only in four samples of the wall imprints; the number of fungi was 0.01 c.f.u. per one square centimetre of the surface. The mould genus Aspergillus was most frequently isolated, and the species A. fumigatus and A. versicolor were the dominating ones. To ensure microbiological cleanness of hospital operating theatre, the air-conditioning system should be properly maintained. Domination of the Aspergillus fungi in indoor air as well as increase in the number of moulds in the samples taken in evenings (p<0.05) may suggest that the room decontamination procedures were neglected.

Adsorption refrigeration systems are able to work with heat sources of temperature starting with 50°C. The aim of the article is to determine whether in terms of technical and economic issues adsorption refrigeration equipment can work as elements that produce cold using hot water from the district heating network. For this purpose, examined was the work of the adsorption air conditioning equipment cooperating with drycooler, and the opportunities offered by the district heating network in Warsaw during the summer. It turns out that the efficiency of the adsorption device from the economic perspective is not sufficient for production of cold even during the transitional period. The main problem is not the low temperature of the water supply, but the large difference between the coefficients of performance, COPs, of adsorption device and a traditional compressor air conditioning unit. When outside air temperature is 25°C, the COP of the compressor type reaches a value of 4.49, whereas that of the adsorption device in the same conditions is 0.14. The ratio of the COPs is 32. At the same time ratio between the price of 1 kWh of electric power and 1 kWh of heat is only 2.85. Adsorption refrigeration equipment to be able to compete with compressor devices, should feature COPads efficiency to be greater than 1.52. At such a low driving temperature and even changing the drycooler into the evaporative cooler it is not currently possible to achieve.

This research proposed an integrated eco-system for conditioning an outdoor public area (park or sport) in a hothumid environment. It is accomplished by the use of a dehumidifier control machine driven by renewable solar power; after which air is distributed throughout a ducting system. The system will harvest moisture from the air, utilize it for drinking water production and plants irrigation as well as deliver low temperature, low humidity ratio air for controlling the outdoor air, which results in a comfortable outdoor relative humidity and temperature (24 °C, 50% RH). The Integrated Eco-Friendly Cooling System (IEFCS) is a sustainable self-dependent in energy and water sources. It provides a positive impact on the microclimate of the site, assists in night illumination, supplies water for drinking, plant irrigation, and allows people to enjoy a thermally comfortable atmosphere. The advantages include low maintaining cost as well as the possibility to be scaled and implemented anywhere according to the selected location.
