    Parentification happens when children take on parental duties, which leads to role reversal between children and their parents. Parentification has multiple causes and can have a short- and long-term negative impact on parentified children. This study examined prevalence and correlates of parentification in Polish adolescents. The study included 557 16-year-old students in four types of Polish high schools. Results indicate that parentification is present to a considerable degree and may negatively affect students’ school functioning and affective well-being.

    Opis:
    “Hikikomori syndrome,” or extreme social withdrawal, determines a refusal to go to school or work where one’s life style is centred around the home. In Japan hikikomoris, also called “family hermits” or “bedroom hermits,” were first identified in the late seventies. In the West (USA, France, UK, Spain, Italy) clinical psychologists are treating an increasing number of adolescents and young hikikomoris. Over the last few years, the Unità Funzionale Salute Mentale Infanzia Adolescenza (UFSMIA) in Arezzo has received a number of requests for treating young people who present strong similarities with hikikomoris as well as teenagers in early adolescence “on their way to social withdrawal.” The signs of the syndrome are largely similar to the Japanese description, with some differences linked to the Italian cultural context. As to treatment, a single clinical approach (e.g. individual or family psychotherapy) has not given the expected results. By combining different approaches it may be possible to create a network able to stimulate the subject’s resources and those of his or her family. Findings reveal the need to develop more in depth clinical knowledge on this social withdrawal syndrome and create new protocols which will be useful for future psychological and psychotherapeutic programmes.
    Zespół hikikomori, czyli zespół skrajnego wycofania społecznego, polega na rezygnacji z udziału w życiu społecznym łącznie z odmową uczęszczania do szkoły lub pracy, a życie osoby nim dotkniętej ogranicza się do przebywania we własnym domu. W Japonii przypadki „hikikomori”, nazywanych również „domowymi pustelnikami” (chory przebywa jedynie we własnym domu lub nawet tylko we własnym pokoju), po raz pierwszy zidentyfikowano i opisano w późnych latach 70. XX wieku. Obecnie w krajach zachodnich, takich jak USA, Francja, Wielka Brytania, Hiszpania i Włochy, obserwuje się rosnącą liczbę pacjentów „hikikomori” w okresie dojrzewania oraz młodych dorosłych trafiających do psychologów klinicznych. W minionych kilku latach do naszej Poradni Zdrowia Psychicznego Wieku Dziecięcego i Wieku Dojrzewania w Arezzo (Unità Funzionale Salute Mentale Infanzia Adolescenza, UFSMIA) skierowano pewną liczbę młodych pacjentów wykazujących znaczące podobieństwo do japońskich „hikikomori”, jak również nastoletnich pacjentów we wczesnej fazie wieku dojrzewania „zmierzających w kierunku wycofania społecznego”. Objawy zespołu, z którym mamy do czynienia, w dużej mierze pokrywają się z opisem japońskim, z uwzględnieniem pewnych różnic uwarunkowanych włoskim kontekstem kulturowym. W leczeniu wspomnianych przypadków zastosowanie jednego konkretnego podejścia klinicznego, takiego jak np. psychoterapia indywidualna lub psychoterapia rodzinna, nie przyniosło oczekiwanych efektów. Poprzez połączenie różnych sposobów postępowania w przypadku poszczególnych pacjentów możliwe wydaje się stworzenie sieci pomocy stymulującej zasoby własne pacjenta oraz jego rodziny. Wyniki badań wskazują na potrzebę poszerzenia wiedzy klinicznej dotyczącej tego zespołu wycofania społecznego, jak również stworzenia nowych protokołów terapeutycznych pomocnych w stosowanych w przyszłości programach psychologicznych i terapeutycznych.

    Student burnout is an issue rarely analysed in Polish literature, and even fewer studies take into account the knowledge of parents about such an educational problem. So far, only a few studies have focused on the psychological characteristics of parents related to school burnout, such as the quality of family relationships, attachment style, parental attitudes or upbringing style. However, there are no studies in the literature that take into account both the children’s and the parents’ psychological characteristics associated with school burnout. Therefore, the main aim of the current study was to test whether mental health and parental professional functioning characteristics are related to the student online school burnout syndrome during the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis covered 29 parent-adolescent dyads. In the entire group of respondents, the significant relationship between the student burnout symptoms perceived by parents and the online school burnout from the students’ perspective was confirmed. Student burnout with distance learning correlated positively with the mental health problems of parents and negatively with the well-being of students. Student burnout from distance learning did not significantly correlate with work flow and online job burnout of parents. The findings indicated the importance of the simultaneous evaluation of the problem of educational burnout by the parent-adolescent dyad. In this context, the active involvement of parents in preventive interventions regarding the mental health of their children can be an important factor contributing to minimising the risk of developing school burnout symptoms.

    The article presents interpersonal relationship issues related to the period of adolescence and their influence on social functioning, mental health and self-perception of adolescents. To begin with, interpersonal relationships are outlined and their various characteristics are presented. Relationships and their influence on the later functioning of teens are presented with reference to J. Bowlby’s attachment theory, which was develop by Mary Ainsworth. This theory emphasizes the importance of early caregiver (parent) – child relationship for the development of personality and the social functioning of the child. The article describes adolescence period and in particular presences the relationships with parents and peers during this period, with emphasis on their changing nature. Authors concentrate mainly on the differences in the relationship between adolescence and their parents and peers. The relationships with mother, father and peers are discussed in separate chapters and are presented in the context of social functioning, mental health and self-perception. Numerous pieces of research and case studies are presented and they show the relation between early interaction patterns and the later functioning of teens. Authors also presented case studies showing connection between early patterns of relationships and present self-assessment, self-perception general functioning of young person. Both researches and case studies support the fundamental importance of positive relationships with parents and peers in the adolescence.
    W artykule zaprezentowano problematykę dotyczącą relacji w okresie adolescencji oraz wyjaśniono, jaki jest ich wpływ na funkcjonowanie społeczne, zdrowie psychiczne i obraz siebie dorastającej młodzieży. W części wstępnej wyjaśniono, czym są relacje interpersonalne, jakie jest ich znaczenie oraz dokonano ich krótkiej charakterystyki. Zagadnienie relacji oraz ich wpływu na dalsze funkcjonowanie młodych osób przedstawione zostało głównie z punktu widzenia teorii przywiązania J. Bowlby'ego, którą następnie rozwinęła Mary Ainsworth. Teoria ta akcentuje znaczenie wczesnych interakcji opiekuna (rodzica) z dzieckiem zarówno dla dalszego rozwoju osobowości, jak i funkcjonowania społecznego. Artykuł prezentuje także problematykę związaną z okresem dorastania, a w szczególności specyfikę relacji z rodzicami i rówieśnikami w tym okresie. Skoncentrowano się głównie na różnicach zachodzących w relacjach pomiędzy dorastającymi młodymi osobami a ich rodzicami i rówieśnikami. Dla zachowania większej przejrzystości artykułu poszczególne rozdziały opisują oddzielnie relacje z rodzicami, z uwzględnieniem różnicy w relacji z matką i ojcem, oraz z rówieśnikami w kontekstach funkcjonowania społecznego, zdrowia psychicznego oraz samooceny. Przedstawiono liczne przykłady badań, które dotyczą związku między rodzajem przywiązania rodzica do dziecka a wpływem tego kontaktu na dalsze funkcjonowanie jednostki w okresie adolescencji. Zaprezentowano także przykłady z praktyki klinicznej ilustrujące związek między wczesnymi wzorami interakcji a aktualną samooceną, obrazem siebie, ogólnym funkcjonowaniem młodej (hospitalizowanej) osoby. Zarówno badania, jak i obserwacje kliniczne potwierdzają fundamentalne znaczenie, jakie ma posiadanie pozytywnych relacji z rodzicami oraz z rówieśnikami w okresie dorastania.
