Opis:
The study describes admission procedures at the largest school of medicine in the Czech Republic. It is based on the 1999 data of 383 students admitted that year, 163 of them failed and 220 succeeded in finishing the study. By use of Pearson’s correlations between predictors, cluster analysis and logistic regression we show that preadmission grades predict the overall success in medical study with the same accuracy as admission tests but they describe different dimensions of students’ abilities. Simultaneous use of GPA and AT in the admission process of all students should bring higher quality to the selection and also practical advantages for future analyses. Nevertheless, the idea of having a group of the students admitted based only on an excellent GPA could be considered quite reasonable.

QoS IP network
conditional admission control
Opis:
Future IP QoS (quality of service) networks are aiming at differentiating transfer quality of packets belonging to different flows. For this purpose, a set of network services (NS) with different QoS objectives is defined and implemented in the network. To a NS a certain amount of network resources, i.e. dedicated link capacity with associated buffer size, is allocated. Moreover, the resources dedicated for one NS are not available for other NSs. Traditional approach for admission control algorithm corresponding to given NS takes into account current traffic conditions inside considered NS. This can lead to the situation, due to traffic fluctuations, that temporary overloaded NS cannot use the spare bandwidth from underloaded in this time other NSs. This paper describes a conditional admission control algorithm (C-AC), allowing us to admit new packet flow conditionally in the case where no available capacity inside a given NS. For conditionally accepted flow currently unused capacity, dedicated to other NS, is allocated. This can be done only in the case when QoS requirements for both the conditionally accepted flow and the flows in progress are satisfied. The conditions for effective using of C-AC algorithm are discussed in the paper, like characteristics of NS borrowing and lending capacity and their current traffic load. To show potential benefits of the approach, exemplary numerical results are included, corresponding to hypothetical NSs using REM (rate envelope multiplexing) scheme.

Opis:
Females are being involved in crimes and admitted into the correctional services all over the world. However, the trend of these admissions may differ according to the situations on ground. This study therefore aimed at examining the trend of females’ admission into the Nigeria Correctional Services within 2005–2016. The study is longitudinal in nature. It adopted the situational theory of crime as its theoretical framework. Hence it made use of secondary sources of data collection such as the National Bureau of Statistics official report, Nigeria Correctional Services Reports, academic journals and current Newspaper reports. Data analysis was based on content analysis. The study revealed that the highest number of females admitted into the correctional services within the period of study was 13,472. It also revealed that within the period of study, a cumulative total of 82,556 females were admitted for various types of offences into the correctional services across the nation. It identified and arranged in order of frequency 11 types of offences that females were mostly admitted for and identified sedition as the least offence females were admitted for. The study therefore, recommended that poverty, unemployment, inflation, corruption of the ruling classes and governmental aids to bandits should be discouraged if crime must be curbed.

Opis:
Providing quality of service (QoS) into the networks based on the packet switched technologies, as ATM and IP, is currently the challenge for the military communication system designers. The main element for achieving QoS capabilities is to implement effective admission control (AC) function, which regulates the volume of submitted traffic to the network. The traditional approach for the AC is that it is invoked by each call requesting QoS. As a consequence, the call set-up latency is increasing and, in addition, the signaling traffic in the network is growing. This paper proposes a simple AC method that is based on the online traffic load measurements and assumes that the AC is involved only when the load exceeds a predefined threshold. As a consequence, for most of the connections the AC is not necessary to be executed and this causes lower set-up phase duration and limits the volume of signaling traffic. The numerical results showing effectiveness of the approach are included and compared with traditional AC performing.

In small steam turbines, sometimes the efficiency is not as important as the cost of manufacturing the turbine. The Curtis wheel is a solution allowing to develop a low output turbine of compact size and with a low number of stages. This paper presents three fully dimensional computational fluid dynamics cases of a Curtis stage with full and partial admission. A 1 MW steam turbine with a Curtis stage have been designed. The fully admitted stage reaches a power of over 3 MW. In order to limit its output power to about 1 MW, the partial admission was applied. Five variants of the Curtis stage partial admission were analyzed. Theoretical relations were used to predict the partial admission losses which were compared with a three-dimensional simulations. An analysis of the flow and forces acting on rotor blades was also performed.

The structure of Bucharest University, the curriculum, acceptance of the students via admission exams as well as the process of assignment of graduates from University of Bucharest to production units in the 1980’s, are aspects of university life which were all affected by profound changes during the period subject to the research, leading to a   genuine phenomenon in the Romanian society. The way these changes were reflected in the cultural mindset and the traumas generated by them are all points of interest addressed in my presentation.

The objective of the study was to describe the characteristics of agriculture and forestry related injury cases admitted to an Emergency Department (ED), and to asses factors related to injury severity and hospital admission. Retrospective analysis of ED case records in Teaching Hospital No 1 in Lublin, from January 2004 to December 2005 were utilized. Inclusion criteria: patient >14 years old, with agriculture and forestry related injuries. Univariate and bivariate descriptive analyses and multiple logistic regressions were performed. 3791 cases were included, 63.1% males, 53.3% cases younger than 30 years and 47.1% of the patients sustained injuries related to machines or falls. After adjusting for age, sex and the presence of multiple injuries, animal related injuries, followed by machine related injuries and falls, were at higher risk of a more severe injury (OR: 1.77, 1.61 and 1.50, respectively). This groups also showed a higher likelihood of hospital admission (OR: 2.03, 192 and 2.00, respectively). Patients attended to in the ED during night hours (OR: 2.06) were also at a higher risk of hospitalization. It was concluded that animal related injuries, agriculture machine operators, and falls, besides accounting for two thirds of analyzed cases, are the mechanism of injury with a greater risk of a more severe injury and higher likelihood of a hospitalization.

Background. In Poland, as in the world at large, Emergency Departments (EDs) face a formidable problem as they are overloaded with an excessive number of patients. It was decided to investigate whether there are any factors which determine patient admittance rates to the observation and consultation areas of EDs. Objectives. The aim of this study is to determine whether differences in the rates of patient visits to emergency rooms (observation and consultation areas) on workdays and on weekends, are significantly determined by sociodemographic variables, patients’ beliefs and knowledge about the functioning of EDs and primary healthcare facilities (PHFs) or health-related variables. Material and methods. A total of 164 patients from the ED of the University Clinical Hospital in Opole were examined. The diagnostic survey method was employed, using the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and an original questionnaire of the authors’ own design. Results. Neither age (p = 0.059), sex (p = 0.687), marital status (p = 0.585), place of residence (p = 0.423), employment status (p = 0.401), the presence of chronic diseases (p = 0.936) nor a lack of trust in primary care physicians (p = 1.000) determined the ED admittance rates on weekdays versus weekends. People who did not know where to seek medical help at night and on national holidays were more likely to visit the ED on weekends than on weekdays (28.5%; 23% vs 10.98%; 9, p = 0.010). Conclusions. It is difficult to define the characteristics of healthcare service recipients visiting the ED in terms of whether the admittance is a on workday or a weekend day. During each shift, the ED staff should be prepared to receive patients of different sociodemographic backgrounds and health statuses, possessing different levels of knowledge and beliefs about the functioning of EDs and PHFs

Objectives: A large body of evidence has documented that air pollutants have adverse effect on human health as well as on the environment. The aim of this study was to determine whether there was an association between outdoor concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and a daily number of hospital admissions due to cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in Novi Sad, Serbia among patients aged above 18. Material and Methods: The investigation was carried out during over a 3-year period (from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2009) in the area of Novi Sad. The number (N = 10 469) of daily CVD (ICD-10: I00-I99) hospital admissions was collected according to patients' addresses. Daily mean levels of NO₂ and SO₂, measured in the ambient air of Novi Sad via a network of fixed samplers, have been used to put forward outdoor air pollution. Associations between air pollutants and hospital admissions were firstly analyzed by the use of the linear regression in a single polluted model, and then trough a single and multi-polluted adjusted generalized linear Poisson model. Results: The single polluted model (without confounding factors) indicated that there was a linear increase in the number of hospital admissions due to CVD in relation to the linear increase in concentrations of SO₂ (p = 0.015; 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.144-1.329, R² = 0.005) and NO₂ (p = 0.007; 95% CI: 0.214-1.361, R² = 0.007). However, the single and multi-polluted adjusted models revealed that only NO₂ was associated with the CVD (p = 0.016, relative risk (RR) = 1.049, 95% CI: 1.009-1.091 and p = 0.022, RR = 1.047, 95% CI: 1.007-1.089, respectively). Conclusions: This study shows a significant positive association between hospital admissions due to CVD and outdoor NO₂ concentrations in the area of Novi Sad, Serbia.

Suicidal declarations made by patients intoxicated with alcohol are a common problem in the psychiatric practice. The following study was conducted in order to check how many patients who declared suicidal tendencies while intoxicated with alcohol, with no history of previous psychiatric treatment, still declare suicidal tendencies after being referred to a sobering‑up station. To this end, a study group consisting of 81 patients, aged 18 to 65 (mean 37.3) years old, 47 men and 34 women, brought to the Provincial Multidisciplinary Hospital No 4 Admission Room by the emergency due to suicidal tendencies, in period 01.06.2010‑31.05.2011, was analysed. The criteria of the group included no previous history of psychiatric treatment, alcohol blood concentration of at least one per mille, no other (i.e. internist) contraindications to referral to the sobering‑up station. Patients diagnosed with psychiatric illnesses other than alcohol dependency syndrome during the initial consultation were excluded from the study. A percentage of patients with persevering suicidal threat aftersobering‑up was calculated. The results show that among 81 patients referred to the sobering‑up station, suicidal tendencies were declared after sobering‑up by 7 (8.64%). Statistical significance was determined by using McNemar test to be p<0.001. None of the patients withdrawing from the suicidal tendencies appeared again in the admission room during the course of the study, also none of the patients died a suicidal death in this period, which was confirmed in police statistics. The study suggests that, considering the limited place in the psychiatric wards and hospitals, referring an intoxicated patient who declares suicidal tendencies to a sobering‑up station is a clinically‑confirmed course of action. The sobering‑up station guarantees strict scrutiny and impossibility of realizing the suicidal threat as well as specialist detoxification. It is imperative for the patient to be reconsulted by a psychiatrist after sobering‑up – the examination ought to include known suicide risk factors (i.e. as in standards of American Psychiatric Association).

Opis:
A new approach is presented to modeling intelligent admission control and congestion avoiding mechanism, without rejecting new requests, embedded into a priority closed computer network. Most Call Admission Control (CAC) algorithms treat every request uniformly and hence optimize network performance by maximizing the number of admitted and served requests. In practice, requests have various levels of importance to the network, for example priority classes. Here, the investigated closed network with priority scheduling has been reduced to two service centers, which allows for decomposition of a larger network into a chain of individual queues, where each queue can be studied in isolation. A new algorithm (approach) of this special type of closed priority queuing systems is presented, including a node consisting of several priority sources generating tasks, designated as an Infinite Server (IS), and a service centre with a single service line. This model type is frequently described as a finite source, pre-emptive-resume priority queue (with general distribution of service time). The pre-emptive service discipline allows a task of lower priority to be returned to the head of a queue when a new task of higher priority arrives. A mathematical model of provisioning and admission control mechanism is also described. The idea behind this mechanism has been derived from the Hidden Markov Model (HMM) theory. It is crucial in the CAC process that the network manager obtains correct information about the traffic characteristics declared by the user. Otherwise, the quality of service (QoS) may be dramatically reduced by accepting tasks based on erroneous traffic descriptors. Numerical results illustrate the strategy's effectiveness in avoiding congestion problems.
