Opis:
The results of the investigation concerning the influence of engraving parameters on the mark quality and material removal rates from panels made by different types of metals by the Q-switched diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser are presented in this paper. Quality of marks is examined by considering readability and durability as the function of material removed and parameters. The parameters under consideration are: the average power, pulse frequency and surface scanning velocity. The results disclosed that laser engraving can be applied in marking metals successfully.

Opis:
Self-organizing nanometer size structures are observed on the surface of CdZnTe crystal irradiated by strongly absorbed Nd:YAG laser irradiation (LR) at intensity range of 4-12 MW/cm2. According to this model the Thermogradient effect has the main role in the interaction process of LR and semiconductors. The surface state of the CdZnTe under the influence of Nd:YAG laser irradiation has been studied. A state has been defined by atom force microscope. The influence of LR on the photoluminescence spectrahas show that at a threshold intensity of LR I=4 MW/cm2 creation of nanometer size structure begins. A graded band gap structure with optical window was formed at the top of nano-hills.

Opis:
We have shown the possibility to form a new type of material known as "black silicon". After irradiation of a Si sample surface, covered with 30 nm thick Ni layer, by Nd: YAG laser beam at intensity 4.5 MW/cm2 the "black silicon" was formed. The formation and self-organization of conelike microstructures on the Ni/Si surface has been detected by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Light is repeatedly reflected between the cones in the way that most of it is absorbed, therefore the surface becomes like a "black body" absorber. The micro-chemical analysis performed on SEM has shown that the microstructures contain NiSi2. This was approved by presence of LO phonon line in Raman back scattering spectrum. The control of micro-cone shape and height was achieved by changing the laser intensity and number of pulses.

Based on analytical and numerical solutions of the rate equations system and the heat conductivity equation, the model of the quasi-three-level passively Q-switched YAG:Yb/YAG:Cr microchip laser is developed. The obtained results are used for its optimization, i.e., for the determination of the output mirror reflectivity, the pumping beam radius, the thickness of the absorber and the phototropic centers concentration maximizing the energy in the laser pulse. The influence of the thermal load on the spatial parameters of the laser beam is also determined.

Opis:
The paper presents the method of preparation YAG: Ce precursor powder with ability for synthesis at lower temperature. Mechanochemical processing of an initial powder mixture was used as a preliminary step for subsequent high-temperature treatment of the precursor. The specific surface area, phase composition and luminescence properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. It has been shown that YAG structure formed at lower temperature by 300°C in comparison to the reference specimen but luminescence intesity was dependant on temperature of powder synthesis. The highest luminescence intensity was observed for powders synthesised at 1650°C.
W artykule przedstawiono otrzymywanie proszku granatu YAG:Ce z zastosowaniem zmodyfikowanej metody reakcji w stanie stałym.

Opis:
The aim of this work is to develop an automation system for iodine-125 radioactive seed production by Nd:YAG laser welding, which has been used successfully in low dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy treatment. This small seed consists of a welded titanium capsule, with 0.8 mm in diameter and 4.5 mm in length, containing iodine-125 adsorbed onto a silver rod. The iodine-125 seeds are implanted into the human prostate to irradiate the tumor for cancer treatment. Nowadays, the Radiation Technology Center, at Institute for Nuclear and Energy Research, Săo Paulo, Brazil (IPEN-CNEN/SP) imports and distributes 36,000 iodine-125 seeds per year, for the clinics and hospitals in the country. However, the Brazilian market potential is now over 8,000 iodine-125 seeds per month. The local production of these iodine-125 radioactive sources became a priority for the Institute, in order to reduce the price and the problems of prostate cancer management. It will permit to spread their use to a larger number of patients in Brazil. On the other hand, the industrial automation plays an important role for iodine-125 seeds in order to increase the productivity, with high quality and assurance, avoiding human factors, implementing and operating with good manufacturing practices (GMP). The technology consists of appliance electronic and electro-mechanical parts and components to control machines and processes. The automation system technology for iodine-125 seed production developed in this work was mainly assembled employing a programmable logic controller (PLC), a stepper motor, an Nd:YAG laser welding machine and a supervisory. The statistical repeatability of correctly encapsulated sealed sources with this automation system is greater than 95 per cent.

Seeding of cells on functional, biocompatible scaffolds is a crucial step in achieving the desired engineered tissue. The authors show the constructional solutions of the Nd:YAG pulse laser system with the Q-switch modulation for direct and interferential shaping of the surface of biocompatible materials. The two-channel interference system is distinguished by high control, simplicity and repetitiveness regarding laser energy level and dimensions of the surface structures. The experiments were conducted on hard, biocompatible substrates of amorphous carbon (diamond-like carbon, DLC) and were preliminarily tested on smooth muscle cell depositions.

Opis:
This paper presents an investigation into effect of nitrogen content of shielding gas mixture on weld geometry, microstructure and hardness of pulsed laser welded 2205 duplex stainless steel. Full penetration autogenous welding was performed on 2 mm thick plates using a low power pulsed Nd: YAG laser. light and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the resulting microstructures. It is observed that 2 mm full penetrated joint decreases to 1.8 mm by dominating nitrogen in argon-nitrogen mixture. Different morphologies of austenite phase as well as an increase of 8% of its content can be observed in pure nitrogen shielded welds. Average weld grain size in sample which is welded in nitrogen atmosphere stands at approximately 41 μm which is smallerthan that of argon atmosphere which is about 51 μm. Micro-hardness test reveals that hardness values increase from 280 HV in base metal to 307 HV in weld center line and the shielding gas mixture does not significantly influence the weld hardness.
