In the paper some issues connected with indexing documents in the Polish language are discussed. Algorithms for stemming and part of speech tagging, important in the process of text analysis and indexing are shortly described. Next their suitability to the Polish language, which has a very extensive inflection, is discussed. The usefulness for stemming and part of speech tagging of large dictionaries with inflected forms, like WordNet and open-source dictionary of Polish language is also described. Two dictionary structures enabling effective word searching are presented. In the final part, some tests of implemented two dictionary structures are described. Tests were made on the six actual and three crafted artificial texts. At the end conclusions of performed tests are formulated.

By using van Dijk’s concept of coherence and bringing it together with my Principle of meaning iconicity, we have a new way of looking at incoherence in texts. The principle says that closely related information is meaningfully related on a pragmatic level, an instruction to the reader to relate the information to each other. It is demonstrated by textual analysis that the concept of coherence can be used analytically by dividing it into first and second order coherence. First order coherence is the usual concept of coherence: sentences are connected by cohesive links and related by causality, time etc. Second order coherence is a way of organizing text by using incoherence as a way of organizing text into chunks of coherent parts. It is shown how readers can detect these structures in the text by detecting the incoherence even without the layout of the text to signal structure (e.g. indention of paragraphs).

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the preferences of English-major students to determine their reading activities when they have the choice of reading a printed text or an electronic text. The participants chosen for the study were 105 students from English reading classes at an English department. For the purpose of finding out students’ preferences for English reading from printed or electronic texts, a questionnaire for online reading comprehension was employed. The result of an independent-samples t test showed that there was no significant difference between the genders (male and female) regarding preference for printed or electronic texts. The results of a one-way ANOVA showed that there were significant differences between the different proficiency levels (high, intermediate, and low) regarding their preferences for printed text or electronic text in male and female groups. Interestingly, both the males and females in the high proficiency group preferred the printed text over the electronic text, and the students at the low proficiency level preferred to use the electronic text over the printed text to read. In conclusion, these results can provide educators and instructors with text preferences for their students when they designate the reading medium which could improve readers’ reading comprehension performance in the long run.

The article discusses the use of word sequences in text classification. As opposed to ngrams, word sequences are not of a fixed length and therefore allow the classifier to obtain flexibility necessary to operate on documents collected from various sources. Presented classifier is built upon the suffix tree structure which enables word sequences to take part in classification process. During classification, both single words and longer sequences are taken into account and have impact on the category assignment with respect to their frequency and length. The Suffix Tree Classifier and well known Naive Bayes Classifier are compared and their properties are discussed. Obtained results show that incorporating word sequences into text classification can increase accuracy and reveal some interesting relations between maximal length of used sequences and classifier's error rate.

W psychologii analizy danych zapisanych w postaci tekstów stanowią ważny element prac badawczych. Niemniej nadal poszukuje się narzędzi, metod, które mogą umożliwić szybką analizę danych zarejestrowanych w postaci tekstów, gdyż analizy te są najczęściej bardzo czasochłonne. W prezentowanym artykule przybliżono metodę text mining, która ma szczególne zastosowanie w analizie informacji zapisanych w postaci danych tekstowych. Wykorzystanie metody text mining jest omawiane na przykładzie analizy obieranych przez rodziców celów wychowawczych.. W artykule przedstawiono sposób, w jaki algorytmy text mining: a) dokonują analizy tekstu przez zliczenie słów i nadanie im wag, b) przeprowadzają analizę relacji między słowami za pomocą składowych głównych (Principal Component Analysis), c) przekształcają dane słownew liczbowe, przygotowując zbiór danych do kolejnych obliczeń.
In the psychology the analysis of data written in the form of texts are an important element of research work. Nevertheless, tools are still sought, methods that can enable rapid analysis of data recorded in the form of texts, because these analyzes are usually very time consuming. This article approximates the text mining method, which is particularly applicable in the analysis of information recorded in the form of text data. Analysing textual data using text mining algorithms is shown on the example of parents’ choice of educational goals. The paper presents the way in which text mining algorithms: a) perform text analysis by counting words and weighting them, b) analyze relationships between words by means of Principal Component Analysis, c) convert verbal data into numerals by preparing a set data for subsequent calculations.

The division of texts for the purpose of translation into literary and non-literary ones, based mostly on the dominant language function in a given text type, often leads to a stereotypical understanding of the stance of the translator’s competence. Non-literary text translators who focus entirely on that branch of knowledge that a given text refers to and on related terminology may overlook the cultural and intertextual elements. This not only ignores the intention of introducing them into the text, but also may change the meaning of passages in which they are included. The analysis of a book concerning psychology and psychotherapy: Systems of Psychotherapy. A Transtheoretical Analysis, as representing non-literary texts, and G.K. Chesterton’s detective stories, being examples of literary texts, provides some examples of introducing more or less implicit references to the Bible into psychological discourse and literature respectively. Despite the label of scientific texts, American psychological literature is characterized by numerous hidden quotations from other sources which serve various functions: using the already lexicalised phrase- ology or entering into a polemics with the religious doctrine. Consequently, in translating such texts, translators cannot limit themselves to a thorough knowledge of psychology, psychotherapy and terminology connected with those areas, but must also be observant enough to notice interte- xtual traces and then be able to localize them and interpret them correctly. Otherwise the transla- tion may alter the original meaning or introduce an ambiguity which is not welcome in such texts. Thus ‘intertextual competence’ is by no means reserved for literary text translators for whom this type of expertise is obviously of primary importance.

The aim of the study was to examine the relations between variables connected with the reader (interest in the text topic and willingness to read it) and the level of reading comprehension among adults, after controlling for text difficulty. The study involved 1549 users of Polish aged from 18 to 87. Open-ended questions were used to measure reading comprehension. It was proved that the model taking into account variables related to the reader better predicted reading comprehension than the model only taking into account text difficulty. Moderation analysis showed a little stronger relation between text topic interest and reading comprehension in the group of women than in the group of men. It was also noted that among adults with lower levels of education text topic interest and willingness to read it were more strongly related to the level of comprehension than among better educated people. The discussion focuses on the role of psychological factors in reading comprehension.

The objective of the study was to establish the impact of illustration on the reading and interpreting of a poem in the case when only one illustration is provided with the text. The research study involved 408 students of the Faculty of Education and Faculty of Arts. The students were divided into two groups, of which one was given the poem Učenjak (Scholar) written by Niko Grafenauer and illustrated by Lidija Osterc, while the other had the same poem illustrated by Marjan Manček. Both groups had to answer a number of questions regarding personal traits of the literary character, his appearance and the environment he lives in. The results showed that the illustrations had a significant impact on the interpretation of the physical features of the literary character and the environment he is set in. This in turn affected the understanding of the message of the poem.

Opis:
Increasing number of repositories of online documents resulted in growing demand for automatic categorization algorithms. However, in many cases the texts should be assigned to more than one class. In the paper, new multi-label classification algorithm for short documents is considered. The presented problem transformation Labels Chain (LC) algorithm is based on relationship between labels, and consecutively uses result labels as new attributes in the following classification process. The method is validated by experiments conducted on several real text datasets of restaurant reviews, with different number of instances, taking into account such classifiers as kNN, Naive Bayes, SVM and C4.5. The obtained results showed the good performance of the LC method, comparing to the problem transformation methods like Binary Relevance and Label Powerset.

This paper presents the features of text categorization of commercial content in linguistic modelling. The aim of this paper is to give an insight into text mining techniques in the context of unstructured text collections of location independent job offers. In order to extract useful information, uncover interesting patterns and features of remote work, we analyze the five most popular and most visited websites containing job offers. We examine clusters of remote job offers, the keywords describing those clusters, as well as the linkages between strongly associated terms describing mobile work offers. It is interesting to observe the maturity of the text mining tools which have broadened their applications to new research topics and have become suitable to explore new phenomena.

In this paper, we examine the processes underlying the Yorùbá numeral system and describe a computational system that is capable of converting cardinal numbers to their equivalent Standard Yorùbá number names. First, we studied the mathematical and linguistic basis of the Yorùbá numeral system so as to formalise its arithmetic and syntactic procedures. Next, the process involved in formulating a Context-Free Grammar (CFG) to capture the structure of the Yorùbá numeral system was highlighted. Thereafter, the model was reduced into a set of computer programs to implement the numerical to lexical conversion process. System evaluation was done by ranking the output from the software and comparing the output with the representations given by a group of Yorùbá native speakers. The result showed that the system gave correct representation for numbers and produced a recall of 100% with respect to the collected corpus. Our future study is focused on developing a text normalisation system that will produce numer names for other numerical expressions such as ordinal numbers, date, time, money, ratio, etc. in Yorùbá text.

Empirical Verification of the Polish Formula of Text DifficultyThe aim of the study was to verify the accuracy of the formula for assessing the difficulty of texts written in Polish (Pisarek 1969). The study involved 1,309 persons aged between 15 and 84. 15 texts were used, each approximately 300 words long, representing different subjects and varied difficulty level. Text comprehension was checked with multiple choice tests, the cloze procedure and open-ended questions. Significant correlations between the difficulty of a text and its comprehension were found (rmc(15) = -0.529, p = 0.043; ropen = -0.519, p = 0.047; rcloze = -0.656, p = 0.008). The results confirmed relative accuracy and usefulness of Pisarek's readability formula. The discussion includes proposed ways of improving the current form of the formula.

The aim of this article is to typify the verbal and visual means that determine whether a media expression, seemingly monologic in form, fits the interview genre. The research material consists of monologued audiovisual interviews of a confessional nature from the series “Room Number Seven” published on YouTube. Given the repetitive and cyclical nature of vlogs, the monologued interview in an audiovisual platform like YouTube evolves into a sub-genre with a relatively stable set of features. These characteristics no longer define individual messages but rather shape the content in a serial format. Internet user comments on selected episodes from the series “Room Seven” clearly demonstrate that, for viewers, monologued confidences are an unconventional demonstration of the interview genre pattern.
