    A Bulgarian teacher presents her experience and self-training in ICT. Starting with changes in society, social status of teachers, use of ICT in classrooms and teacher training; the author then focuses on her own institution. This article shows the ICT usage in the writer’s school through institutional support, teachers, students, ICT tools available and organization of class activities with ICT. eTwinning, www.etwinning.net, is given as an example of successful online foreign language teaching (FLT) activity. The paper ends with hopes for faster ICT development in Bulgarian school education, linked to the newly elected Bulgarian government.

    Telecollaboration seems to be a present emerging practice in education. In this sense, telecollaboration is wide and covers several areas of work and study, and it can also concern hybrid ones. This research focuses on developing learners’ digital competence, English language skills for professional purposes, and knowledge on recycling matters through a telecollaborative project work. The framework for this study is based on Spiers and Bartlett’s (2012) model on developing language, content, and digital skills, and it also focuses on the taxonomy of communication acts in professional contexts introduced by Lehman and DuFrene (2013). Students had to work collaboratively in groups of four students, from two different institutions and countries, and create a blog on the topic of recycling matters, analyzing the current problems and offering possible solutions. Students were tested before and after the project in order to measure their progress within the different areas of study. Results showed that this telecollaborative project work was potentially beneficial; the experimental group performed better in all the areas tested after this project. In conclusion, it seems that telecollaboration projects helped develop the target skills in this research following an integrated learning approach.

    Teacher training needs to respond to the changing reality, making students better equipped to meet the challenges of teaching in multilingual and multicultural contexts. The traditional paradigm of teacher trainers, trainees and prospective students all sharing the same mother tongue and home culture is no longer valid. Thus, reflection on how to infuse intercultural teaching into the teacher training module is needed. One way to do that is to apply the model of telecollaborative training.

    This paper reports on a study conducted during the implementation of the Polish language and culture promotion project, run by Maria Curie-Skłodowska University and financed by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange. In this project, Polish students were involved in telecollaboration with Brazilians from the Ijui region. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibilities of arranging heritage language acquisition through telecollaboration via social media. Due to the isolation of many communities, telecollaboration can be a useful method facilitating heritage language and culture acquisition across the world. This article used the case study method, in which the “Language Clinic” component of the project was taken under detailed scrutiny. The project showed language shift and translanguaging as it happened—initially, the students from Brazil used English as a lingua franca and as a classroom language; however, once they grew more confident, they replaced English with Polish as the target language. For Polish student assistants, participation in the project brought about many benefits: increased orthophonic awareness, gaining an understanding of how careless articulation and inappropriate intonation of the utterance may lead to communication breakdown.
    Artykuł opisuje badanie przeprowadzone w ramach projektu „Język polski ponad granicami”, realizowanego przez UMCS na zlecenie NAW-y, w którym polscy studenci współpracowali na odległość z Brazylijczykami polskiego pochodzenia. Celem badania była weryfikacja telewspółpracy jako metody nauczania ułatwiającej nabywanie języka i kultury ojczystej w warunkach izolacji geograficznej. Badanie przeprowadzono z wykorzystaniem metody studium przypadku, gdzie jeden z komponentów projektu – „Klinika języka polskiego” – dostarczył danych umożliwiających ocenę interakcji oraz zmian w świadomości językowej uczestników. Badanie pokazało zmiany w korzystaniu z języków obcych w trakcie trwania projektu – na początku brazylijscy uczestnicy używali języka angielskiego jako lingua franca, a stopniowa zmiana na język polski wskazuje na zwiększający się poziom umiejętności językowych, wzrastającą motywację i zmniejszający się lęk. W przypadku polskich studentów, badanie ukazało zwiększoną świadomość językową oraz rolę poprawnej artykulacji i intonacji w komunikacji na odległość.

Farrell i Martin 2009; Krajka 2010; Wysocka 2013). Uwzględnienie globalnego wymiaru nauczania języka obcego stało się koniecznością we współczesnej edukacji językowej, a umiejętne wykorzystanie elementu współpracy zapośredniczonej przez Internet (telecollaboration) pozwala na nadanie bardziej autentycznego wymiaru kształceniu językowemu. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie możliwości zastosowania wybranego formatu zadań realizowanych we współpracy zapośredniczonej przez Internet, ‘elektronicznej obecności’ (electronic appearances) w procesie rozwijania umiejętności nauczania języka angielskiego jako języka międzynarodowego (Teaching English as an International Language – TEIL) na neofilologicznych studiach magisterskich.
    While a great amount of research has been devoted to defining and developing intercultural competence and intercultural communicative competence of learners, fewer studies have focused upon the competences needed to choose materials and methods, plan, organise and implement language teaching in a culturally-sensitive way (e.g., Farrell and Martin 2009; Krajka 2010; Wysocka 2013). Focusing on global dimensions of language teaching has become a must in contemporary Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) education, and skilful integration of telecollaborative projects can authenticate culture-sensitive teacher education. The paper shows the use of a selected telecollaborative format, ‘electronic appearances’, to supplement Teaching English as an International Language (TEIL) class at a post-graduate TEFL programme.

    The article presents the benefits of virtual exchanges/telecollaboration in higher education. Telecollaboration is a form of virtual mobility which can complement or substitute physical mobility. Taking part in virtual exchanges brings benefits which are in line with the recent European recommendations on education. Importantly, telecollaboration requires lower financial outlays and less time comparing to participation in physical exchanges. Thus, its implementation allows the development of various competences (linguistic, digital, intercultural, etc.) despite students’ economic and personal situation. The second part of the study presents a Polish-Italian virtual exchange conducted in the 2018/2019 academic year between the Marie Curie-Skłodowska University and the University of Turin. During the exchange learners of Polish and learners of Italian played the role of their mother tongue teachers. The research aimed to determine whether such a structure of virtual exchange is possible to be successfully implemented among students at the bachelor level. Three factors were analysed during the project: the students’ choice of online tools, forms of presenting language content to partners, and acts of code switching. The data were collected from the students’ production in telecollaborative tasks. It was found that giving students the possibility to choose the language code autonomously did not affect the exchange negatively. However, the students were not sufficiently prepared to act as teachers. Despite being familiar with various online tools, they chose those not adapted to the digital environment, and they found the language issues too complex to be successfully explained to their exchange partners.
