Opis:
One of the functions of cognitive control is to detect difficulties in information processing and adjust the level of performance. This article presents study on confl ict adaptation in which we investigated how detection of cognitive conflict influences behaviour on a subsequent trial. In two experiments we aimed to find out whether the adjustment can be carried out across two kinds of cognitive conflicts: between competing responses and requirements of two tasks. The modified version of the flanker task in switching paradigm was used so that participants had to switch between two tasks that shared the same stimulus set. The results showed that the two kinds of confl icts did not interact with each other. Furthermore, each conflict evoked conflict adaptation, but this adaptation did not occurred across conflicts. This suggests that conflict adaptation covers a set of mechanisms functioning uniquely in one domain.

Opis:
This article contributes to the scarcity of research on the interface between task-modality and the use of previously known languages (PKL) in young learners. It examines the use of Basque/Spanish by CLIL learners (aged 10-11) during oral interaction while completing two collaborative tasks in English: a speaking task and a speaking + writing task. Findings indicate that these learners are extensive users of their PKL. Task-modality is particularly evident in the case of amount of PKL use, as a higher number of PKL turns are obtained in the speaking + writing task. However, task-modality has a limited effect on the functions of PKL, which contrasts with previous studies with adults. Despite the extensive use of their PKL, these young and low-proficient learners employ them as cognitive tools that facilitate the organization of the tasks, the co-construction of meaning and the attention to formal aspects of language such as mechanics.

Opis:
This paper proposes a prototypic assessment tool for intercultural communicative competence. Because traditional discourse completion tasks (DCTs) focus on illocutionary competence rather than sociolinguistic competence, a modified version of a DCT was created to target sociolinguistic competence. The modified DCT employs speech acts as prompts and asks respondents to write about a situation in which a given speech act would be appropriate. This new tool is named a reverse discourse completion task (R-DCT). The task was given to learners of Turkish as a second language. Data from 12 participants were analyzed for their provision of sociopragmatic factors such as power, distance and imposition and also with respect to whether the situation was relevant to a given speech act. Responses from the participants show that R-DCTs can be used to assess intercultural competence as they help reveal respondents’ knowledge of sociolinguistic context in which a given speech act may be appropriate. By removing the need for comparison with native speaker data and the limitations that emerge from the lack of linguistic formula at respondents’ disposal, R-DCT is a promising elicitation task to assess sociolinguistic competence, an integral part of Byram’s (1997) model of intercultural communicative competence.

The aim of the given preliminary study was to check whether any changes in fi ne motor behaviour exist in switching from single to double task (with cognition charge) in proprioceptive sensory graphomotor test conditions. Ten students (fi ve males and fi ve females), aged from 20 to 30 years old, took part in the experiment - precision of tracking of the models in both experimental test conditions: without and with cognitive task (counting numbers back). The variables for assessment were obtained with use of the digitalized proprioceptive diagnostics (Tous, 2008; Tous, J.M., Muiños, Tous, O., & Tous J, 2012) of Mira y Lopez laboratory (University of Barcelona) that transformed the measurements of drawn lines on a touch screen from pixels into millimetres. As results showed, in the proprioceptive test condition, the changes in deviations related to spatial (lineograms) or line length variability (parallels) did not reach any statistical signifi cance; while the changes in line length performance (lineograms) were found signifi cant (that corresponds to inhibition- -excitatory balance of nervous system).

The paper is concerned with the problem of experimental research of Veles planetary rover performing simple construction tasks. The current state of the art in planetary rovers and their research in construction tasks are discussed. The Veles rover solution designed for construction tasks and experimental testbed are described. The experimental testbed included a test room with Moon regolith analogue. Experimental research concerning rover mobility and manipulation tasks were carried out. Experimental research consisted of various scenarios, including clearing an area that removes boulders and levelling the soil. The complementary scenario for the area preparation was to exchange the tools of the manipulator. In this case, the gripper and the shovel were used as end-effectors for moving objects, both structured or in the form of regolith. Results of selected experimental research are presented and discussed. Finally, directions of future works of the rover are pointed out.

Opis:
Learning a foreign language in the context of formal education often imposes on students the management of difficult tasks. This demands an adoption of adequate coping behaviour (achievement vs. avoidance). Easy tasks reduce learning opportunities, while too difficult ones lead to escape-motivated problem behavior. For the purpose of the present research it is proposed that the level of FL task difficulty is related to coping behaviour. The empirical results demonstrate that students who perceive FL tasks as difficult apply more avoidance strategies. Apart from that, students with higher and lower levels of task difficulty use similar amounts of achievement strategies. It follows that the implementation of achievement coping is independent from the level of task difficulty.

Maintaining the aircrafts (AC) of the Polish Armed Forces in operating condition is determined by adequate resources to secure maintenance and repairs possessed by the companies implementing these tasks on them. The article characterises and then describes formally the Aircrafts Maintenance System in the Polish Armed Forces. The assumptions of the aircraft maintenance system model, proposed model structure, and mapping of aircraft maintenance performance were described. The most important elements (such as data, decision variables, boundary conditions and assessment criterion function) of an optimisation task aimed at minimising the executed aircraft maintenances’ costs were formulated. For this purpose, the record of evaluation criterion functions of the companies performing aircraft maintenance was shown. The article was completed with a conclusion, which underlined the importance of the proposed optimisation model. The optimisation model proposed in the article allows evaluating the aircraft maintenances’ organisation and their parameters. The formal record concerns both in the case of one-dimensional maintenance (one aircraft type) and multi-dimensional one (various aircraft types).

The paper presents a new elastic scheduling task model which has been used in the uniprocessor node of a control measuring system. This model allows the selection of a new set of periods for the occurrence of tasks executed in the node of a system in the case when it is necessary to perform additional aperiodic tasks or there is a need to change the time parameters of existing tasks. Selection of periods is performed by heuristic algorithms. This paper presents the results of the experimental use of an elastic scheduling model with a GRASP heuristic algorithm.

The author of the article, popularising education for wisdom as a basis for comprehensive development of pupils, looks for methods supporting the development of wisdom from childhood. Stimulation of wisdom in early education can be a challenge to teachers due to a lack of theoretical and practical guide- lines. Thus, the author developed and used in studies specific diagnostic tools for analysing the capabilities and skills of older preschool children in using wisdom in their thinking. The article describes the study results concerning the application of divergent tasks stimulating thinking in children in different ranges of intelligence (based on R.J. Sternberg’s concept) and conclusions from the studies conducted based on a randomly selected sample (N = 366), e.g., that used tasks make it possible to differentiate the competences and intellectual capabilities of the children in question.

Despite its positive impact on students’ learning and learning outcomes, studies documenting empirical evidence on how Flipped Classroom anchored in technology-mediated task can facilitate and promote students’ learning in post-Earthquake EFL writing pedagogy context remain scarce. To fill this void, this action research, documenting both quantitative and qualitative data, anchored in González-Lloret’s and Ortega’s (2014) technology-mediated task framework, aimed to garner students’ perceptions towards the use of FC-Mediated Task (FCMT) for learning essay writing; how they perceived this instructional approach compared to face-to-face only classes; and what challenges appeared while implementing this approach for the teaching and learning of writing in such a post-earthquake pedagogical context. The statistical evidence showed that the majority of the students positively perceived the use of FCMT for the learning of essay writing. The students also preferred the use of this approach to FTF only classes for learning to write essays in English in terms of the effectiveness and efficiency, engagement, language skills development and motivation. Pedagogical and technological challenges remained their prominent barriers in the implementation of this approach.
