Opis:
The text is dedicated to The Decalogue (Dekalog,1988) by Krzysztof Kieslowski and analyses the television series through the prism of genre and contemporary television studies, including the concept of quality television. Kieslowski’s series fulfills all the criteria assigned to the contemporary new generation television series, and can act as a reference point for interpreting Poland’s first new generation series by HBO, In treatment (Bez tajemnic, 2011–2013). The two titles are also linked by the same Polish film tradition, i.e. the cinema of moral concern, even though In treatment is based on foreign format.

Due to the growing popularity of video games, gaming itself has become a shared experience among media audiences worldwide. The phenomenon of avatar-based games has led to the emergence of new storytelling practices. The paper proposes a typology of tropes in these avatar-based narratives focusing on non-game case studies. Suggested tropes are also confronted with the latest research on avatars in the area of game studies and current knowledge of the issues concerning the player-avatar relationship. Some of the most popular misconceptions regarding the gameplay experience and its representation in non-game media are exposed as a result of this analysis. The research confirms that popular culture perceives gaming experience as closely related to the player identity, as the latter inspires new genres of non-game narratives.

The post-modern gothic simultaneously makes reference to already well-grounded experience, such as the repertoire of motifs and narrative prefigurations which have entered the artistic canon of the convention for good. A lot of figures and characters identified with horror become a part of the transfictional process of allocating them in new settings and re-designing their fictional biographies. Although in TV series reinterpretations of classical literary narratives quite often focus on instilling a positive image of erstwhile impersonation of numinosum, they do offer in return a construal of more contemporaneous fears, aligned with today’s socio-political-economic landscape. This article will include the following series based on literary prototypes representing the very canon of gothic fiction: Dracula, Penny Dreadful, Jekyll and Hyde, Second Chance and Sleepy Hollow as well as elements of productions connected with literary narrations of horror, such as Once Upon a Time.

The article presents the entanglement of the Catholic Church and the media by focusing on the case of the Second Vatican Council and the television broadcast of its events. The mass media attention of the council stimulated, according to the author, a double level: the media conveyed more information about the church event than it had ever done before, but at the same time, the mass media influenced the discussion of the council fathers. The article also analyzes, through the lens of the Council, the recent relationship between the Catholic Church and the Italian television.

The Dukes of Hazzard
Opis:
The heyday of ‘Redneck’ cinema—the 1970s to early 1980s, saw the rise of the Redneck Rebel—a Southern or otherwise ‘hick’ anti-hero who rode around the countryside like a modern-day cowboy vanquishing evil. His ‘horse’ was his car—a beefed up/souped up muscle car that often became the star of the show and overshadowed the anti-hero himself. This article examines the Redneck Rebel through the lens of one American TV series—The Dukes of Hazzard. This popular 1980s TV series, along with its antecedents and contemporaries, underscore several important points that reinforce typical conservative American virtues: freedom, fighting the ‘good fight,’ an overt heterosexuality, a particular reveling in a sarcastic ‘sticking out the tongue’ at the overly sophisticated, overly arrogant, ‘anti-American,’ and well-heeled parts of American society.

Opis:
The present research analyzes the inequality of gender representation in transnational TV series. For this purpose, a content analysis was carried out on 18 episodes of the US crime show Law & Order: Criminal Intent and its French adaptation Paris Enquêtes Criminelles. To conduct this research, we used the artificial intelligence toolkit the Möbius Trip, which is equipped with a gender and emotion recognition feature and relies on big data. The main findings indicate that male characters overwhelmingly dominate the onscreen time equally in both the US and the French versions. The data also show that male characters are more emotionally expressive and that women tend to display a wider range of emotions. The French characters are slightly more emotionally expressive than their American counterparts. The data also suggest that male characters tend to display violent behavior and that female characters tend to be portrayed as a victim in both versions of the show. The emotions-related results show a trend, but the difference of emotions between male and female characters and between the French and American cultures remain fairly narrow.

Despite the title reference, the BBC’s Ripper Street (2012‒2014) was not intended as another Jack the Ripper story; the infamous killer’s absence is acutely felt in its first three seasons, though. The paper examines the way his acts are being recalled for the characters and viewers, but also reconstructed in a performance and copycat murders, and how, even though the Ripper is long gone, people may become his victims. The absence as echoed in the series plot and setting is a commentary on both the Victorian and modern fascination with the unsolved case.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to draw attention to the potential didactic value of medical series in the context of patient-centred and biomedical approaches to medical practice, as well as to the way they are represented in language. We shall argue that these two paradigms dictate given modes of reasoning as to, for example, what health/ disease is and the patient-doctor role relationship. The biomedical model establishes disease as a malfunction of the body (which can be restored) and the patient as a passive recipient of treatment. By contrast, patient-centred medicine advocates a holistic approach to wellness by taking into consideration psychosocial aspects. Having these two models in mind and by adopting a social-constructivist approach to language, it is possible to analyse communication in a particular (pop)cultural text and examine the message from the perspective of mediated content about broadly understood health. The paper is organised as follows: it starts with a discussion of the evolution of medical TV series and a systematic review of studies dealing with their pedagogic role. Next it provides the analysis of two seasons of the Polish medical series Medics (Pol. Lekarze), giving special attention to the holistic presentation of the patient found in this multimodal media text.

In 2019, half a million people all over the world died as a result of drug abuse. This topic is a very sensitive issue in a number of countries, including the Arab Republic of Egypt, where the government informs its citizens every few months about steps to take to combat this problem. Creating a TV series to be aired during Ramaḍān, the most important part of year from the Islamic point of view and also because of the media industry, is one of the tools to create awareness of the danger of drug addiction. In the article, the results of the research conducted on a very popular Ramaḍān TV series from 2015 entitled Taḥt as-Sayṭara are presented. The research focused on the presentation of this problem, in particular whether or not the problem was presented in a realistic way, thus aiding in the fight with drug addiction. This series was special, as it was the first and the only which was devoted so directly to the problem of drug addiction; the sickness covered about 89‒90% of the plot.

Opis:
Apart from originating contemporary norms and cultures among its viewers, Nigerian television series portray new and emerging constructions and practices that the populace is able to identify with. Recently, one television series that has become popular in Nigeria is Jenifa’s Diary. Its popularity stems from its incorporation of the Nigerian English, the British English and the indigenous Yoruba language, as well as the antics and codification(s) of the eponymous character, Jennifer. Her utility of a distinctive English language which deviates from the Nigerian Pidgin and the British English, has made this series popular among viewers. This has created a new linguistic culture and also appropriated what I term the Jenifanlingua franca. It is not a rarity to see children, teenagers and adults communicate in the same manner as Jennifer. Against this backdrop, this paper examines Funke Akindele-Bello’s television series Jenifa’s Diary as Nigerian social reality and a medium for cultural propagation. This study examines socio-cultural nuances in Jenifas Diary. The research is qualitative as it utilises the literary and content analysis methods. The study reveals that Jenifa’s Diary captures the plight of the African been to in the Western world and that the television serial is rich with its incorporation of the Nigerian Pidgin English, the British English and some indigenous Nigerian languages such as the Yoruba language, as well as the antics and codification(s) of the eponymous character, Jennifer. While Jenifa’s Diary and other Nigerian television series are products of social realities, they also create spaces for new socio-cultural landscapes. The study has been able to explain the imperative of television series on the Nigerian socio-cultural space. Cineastes should produce television serials that will educate and stimulate the populace towards becoming better people in the society.

This article considers whether the popular Polish drama-crime television series Ojciec Mateusz [Father Matthew], which is directed by Maciej Dejczer and has been broadcast on TVP1 since 2008, prompts viewers to reflect on Christian moral norms. This research includes the fields of cultural studies and moral theology. From the point of view of moral theology, the theme of Ojciec Mateusz is the battle between good and evil, the basis of which is the tenets of the Decalogue. This study attempts to answer the questions: Is the religiosity hidden in this series, which does not assume the religiosity of the series’ viewers, evoke religious sentiments among those who believe? And, does the series affect the moral formation of those who do not believe?

The present paper is a case study of the U.S. Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) series: “The Italian Americans” (2015). It is argued that the series’ authors have aimed to deconstruct the anti-Italian stereotype, widespread in the United States. In exchange, they have proposed a new, positive image of the Italian community in America promoting the accomplishments of its prominent members. The entire PBS project, “The American Experience”, reflects an evolution of U.S. identity patterns from the homogeneous “melting pot” toward the diverse “salad bowl”, and hence – from monologue to polylogue.

Granice post-humanistycznej nostalgii w serialu telewizyjnym pt.
This article interrogates a tension between post-humanist and humanist modalities of home created by hybrid monsters featured in the TV show Being Human US: a ghost, vampire and a werewolf  (pair). The uncanny home emerges as a palimpsest of architectural and allegorical space, while the monstrous cohabitation gives rise to an allegorical model of the human; a model that wistfully gestures at the utopian vision of the future post-humanist world, and is simultaneously pulled back by the nostalgically traditional humanist conception of the person. By living together, the ghost, the vampire, and the werewolf function as an ensemble that dramatizes the humanist notion of what it means to be human. However, the humanity invoked in the TV show is interrogated from the point of view of  critical post-humanism, which is based on the notion of the “post-human” that indicates a perspective where the abiding question of what it means to be human is not only addressed and re-articulated, but also critically assessed and transcended towards an as-yet-unrealizable utopia, promoting altogether new, post-speciesist, post-animist, or even post-global (in the sense of cosmic) ways of inhabiting the world. The momentary utopia of the monstrous cohabitation provides evidence that post-humanist utopian model of a human person is feasible; yet, only if  “the impurity” of post-human creatures also becomes a part of the definition of the post-humanist human—a human who is a monster.

Opis:
Focusing on a 24-episode TV drama series Borderline on Fire, the presented text offers an analysis of the long-lasting discussion of both the series and the Second Republic of Poland with which the series is bound up. The main goal I set myself in writing the article was to show the significance of the inter-war era – which is inseparably associated with the person of Józef Piłsudski and which has been the subject of much mythologization – in public discourse. The article supports the conclusion that the inter-war period still attracts much interest, especially among history-lovers, and that the series dealt with in it can be considered to be one of the factors to which the epoch owes this interest.
