Opis:
Over the past 20 years the phenomenon of socially responsible investment (SRI) has grown considerably in popularity and there has been in particular a sharp increase in research into its environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects. The process of SRI itself and research into this diverse phenomenon have become widespread particularly in developed countries and essentially supported by international organizations, specialized financial consulting companies, and institutional investors. The issues of theoretical, methodological and practical aspects of SRI in the Ukrainian market have considerable potential for research. The aim of the article is to study theoretical and methodological aspects of SRI as well as define the current state and prospects of socially responsible investment in Ukraine. The article covers the existing differences in the approaches to defining socially responsible investment and social investment, describes their features and proposes a method of classification, as well as clarifying the role of SRI under conditions of sustainable development. The current problems and prospects of SRI development in Ukraine are discussed.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – The aim of the paper is to examine the regional peculiarities of development of socially responsible investment markets based on the main trends in the global socially responsible investment (SRI). Design/methodology/approach – Peculiarities of SRI development are considered in Europe, the USA, Canada, Asia, and Japan. The analysis is based on the data from local SIF surveys: Eurosif, US SIF, JSIF, RIA Canada, RIAA1 and the Global Sustainable Investment Alliance (GSIA). In addition, the data from scientific articles and World Bank databases are used. Findings – SRI development by regions is differentiated according to their dynamics, structure of participants, SRI-strategies, structure of assets in the portfolios, and the barriers or motives for the SRI development. There is a set of macroeconomic indicators whose influence on SRI has been analysed and it can be concluded that only indicators of openness can be linked with the regional SRI market development. Research implications/limitations – As the European market takes the largest share of the SRI market, the more detailed analysis has been conducted regarding this region. Study of both theoretical and practical aspects of socially responsible investment has shown that there is a lack of a unified global concept of socially responsible investment. Within the paper, socially responsible investment is considered as an investment in tangible and intangible forms focused on creating long-term value taking into account the impact on the environment, social sphere, quality control, and ethical obligations. Originality/value/contribution – The paper extends and develops the existing research into the issue in several ways: the peculiarities of regional SRI development are defined, and a comparative analysis of SRI regional markets is conducted; the hypothesis that SRI markets are driven by other factors than those which drive the conventional investment market has been proposed; it has been shown that the level of SRI market development makes an impact on strategies, participants and structure of assets, and that macroeconomic indicators could be considered as preconditions for SRI development.

Opis:
Research background: In the last decades social responsible investment has evolved into an important and influential investment class. What supports then the development of SRI? The neoclassical approach suggests that the attractiveness of investment should result from the risk-return relationship that is satisfying for the investor. However, the performance analysis of SRI vs. conventional investment, conducted in numerous research papers, often delivers contradictory conclusions. If financial factors could not explain the phenomenon of SRI, nonfinancial factors may have played a decisive role in the formation of modern SRI market. Purpose of the article: The purpose of this paper is to analyze financial investment performance of socially responsible vs. respective conventional indices in the periods of high, low and unidentified global risk. Therefore, a following research hypothesis was verified: SR indices perform financially better in high-risk periods than in low-risk periods. This hypothesis is justified by the assumption that, when selecting SRI, investors go by a longer investment horizon than they do when selecting other investments, not subject to such verification. Methods: Among SR indices, we chose three to compare them with their conventional counterparts: DJSI US vs. DJITR (USA), DJSI Korea vs. KOSPI (South Korea) and Respect Index vs. WIG20TR (Poland). The VIX index was used as the global measure of risk aversion. To measure the relative performance of SR and conventional indices in different risk periods, we applied risk-adjusted performance measures, including RSD, Sharpe and Treynor ratios, traditional and asymmetrical CAPM. Findings & Value added: The research shows that conventional and socially responsible indices do not differ statistically in terms of risk and return irrespective of global risk. Our research confirms that the rising, socially responsible, investment market cannot be analyzed only through the prism of simplified rational choices. Additionally, it should be analyzed in terms of moral philosophy and behavioral economics, including the psycho-social features of investors.

Purpose – The aim of the paper is the evaluation of the results of Polish socially responsible funds during the pandemic period in comparison to two previous subperiods. Research method – In the research, the nonclassical meters of investment efficiency were used. They were designed for three research subperiods. They provided the basis for creating rankings and for studying the stability of results. The results were compared with the WIG and WIG-ESG index results. Results – The studied socially responsible funds noted lower results in the period directly before the pandemic. In the pandemic period, they, however, noted higher results than the WIG index.Originality / value / implications / recommendations – The paper bridges the research gap pertaining to the research on the results of Polish socially responsible funds during the pandemic period. The article, according to the authors’ knowledge, is one of the first papers in Poland which studies the results of socially responsible funds during the pandemic period.

Opis:
The research paper positively verified the research hypothesis that the relative financial performance of investments in socially responsible indices against the performance of conventional indices may go up as the global financial risk, measured by the VIX index, increases. Socially Responsible Investing can be rational from the financial point of view. In addition to the ethical aspect, it may fulfill the function of protecting the investment portfolio in periods characterized by a high level of global risk. The hypothesis was tested using statistical research based on a comparative portfolio analysis of the geographically diverse SRI indices (RESPECT Index and DJSI) against the reference points which were the territorially relevant conventional stock indices (WIG20TR and DJITR). Weryfikację postawionej hipotezy przeprowadzono z wykorzystaniem badań statystycznych opartych na komparatywnej analizie portfelowej zróżnicowanych geograficznie giełdowych indeksów SRI (RESPECT Index i DJSI) względem punktów odniesienia, którymi były odpowiadające im terytorialnie giełdowe indeksy konwencjonalne (WIG20TR i DJITR). Opis:
The main objective of the article is to assess profitability and effectiveness of the companies listed within socially responsible stock indices in Central and Easter European countries (CEECs) as well as to compare the results with conventional indices. The analysis involves the companies included in such socially responsible indices as CEERIUS, VONIX and RESPECT. Daily and weekly log returns were applied to assess profitability whereas to assess performance the following indices were used: Sharpe ratios, modified Sharpe ratios, Sharpe – omega ratios, Sortino ratios, Omega ratios and RoVar for daily and weekly returns. The obtained results were further analyzed to answer the question if investors acting pursuant to the principles of social responsibility may benefit financially from the increased value of assets. Also, the structure of the indices in question was analyzed in terms of their components and, consequently, the results were profoundly discussed.
Celem artykułu jest ocena dochodowości i efektywności spółek notowanych w ramach społecznie odpowiedzialnych indeksów giełdowych w krajach Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej i porównanie wyników z indeksami spółek klasycznych. Analiza obejmuje spółki odwzorowane w indeksach społecznie odpowiedzialnych CEERIUS, VONIX, RESPECT. Do oceny dochodowości wykorzystano dzienną i tygodniową logarytmiczną stopę zwrotu, a do oceny efektywności wskaźniki: Sharpe, zmodyfikowany Sharpe, Sharpe – omega, Sortino, Omega, RoVar dla dziennych i tygodniowych stóp zwrotu.
