Opis:
The sea is certainly not one of the favourite research topics of sociology and despite a recent and new popularity among historians and geographers, the sea remains generally a stranger to contemporary sociologists. Conversely, I think that to frame and shed light on the wider theoretical implications of maritime sociology would be beneficial to all possible approaches within sociological research. In this article I intend to give my contribution to the fulfillment of the expectation of above by discussing the ways sociology can understand the sea as a truly social space, beyond any abstract dichotomies separating “grounded” societies and offshore voids. Also, I try to suggest some concrete moves to relocate maritime sociology within the wider sociological debate and to develop the heuristic potential of the sea.

The essay critically approaches the current state and directions of changes in the university education. We see the critical point in the unconditioned endorsement by the university of the market values of intense competitiveness of global economy and the cult of the pro-market education which is its inevitable result. We would like to argue that although the university must respect economic conditions and limitations, nevertheless we fear that the ongoing process of corporatization of the university with its management strategies such as cutting costs, scanning environments for competitive purposes, re-engineering highly competitive efficiency criteria for the staff will bring about a neglect of the humanist values rooted in intellectual and social sensibility and hence undermine the social mission of the university which, apart from professional skills and research, must cultivate intellectual pluralism by providing space for intelligent conversation, sharing critical views of the present state of things thus fostering social criticism and the spirit of responsible dissent.

In this essay I will analyse selected aspects of the process of arranging traditional space in the face of the challenges of modernity. Progressive globalisation, cultural changes, social transformations-all these processes have influenced the ways local communities manage their territory. I will mainly deal with the phenomenon of reterritorialisation, focus on how identification with territory is reinforced in local communities. I will show how cultural legacy, characteristic of a given region, shapes particular versions of locality and globalisation. The role of ethnicity in these processes is of special interest. Is ethnic identification still taken into account in social strategies embedded in the processes of globalisation? In the first part I argue that modernity introduces irreversible changes to the character of existing and ethnically defined space. The second part includes arguments supporting the thesis about the necessity of adjusting to modern strategies of region management, which must entail partially giving up territorial identity protection. In spite of this, in the process of ethnic construction of a region, space seems to constitute a social framework which determines points of reference for collective action and conceptualisation of new reality

In social practice, use of supervision becomes a natural part of improving the activities of so-cial workers and professional employees. These include some legislative conditions; supervision prac-tice has a sufficient number of accredited supervisors. So far supervision activity was mainly focused on raising the professional competences of employees of social services and to support the work teams in these entities. Experience, however, also point out the necessity to pay increased attention to the burnout of employees in these entities. The social worker’s activity in the discussed area is characterised by the diversity of clients from of view of their personal, social, health problems, as well as their work load and low salary. The problem of burnout syndrome of social workers and professional staff of public policy institutions so far was not paid attention to. No research have not been carried out, which showed this issue. The contribution is focused, in addition of theoretical contexts, to analyse the impact of supervision process at the prevention of burnout among professionals. The paper is intended to analyse the impact of the supervision process on prevention of the burnout syndrome in helping professions. The results presented have come from the research in which 93 supervisors and 260 professionals from institutions of social services took part. The aim of the research was to identify presence of an analysed theme in the process of supervision and find out what preferred ways of solving them are. A part of the research was diagnosing the burnout syn-drome on concerned helping professionals and identifying the impact of supervision on this threat. The quantitative exploratory method was used in the research mentioned. The results have produced some valuable findings: the burnout syndrome is often a primary as well as secondary theme of su-pervision of helping professionals and supervision is an effective tool of the burnout syndrome pre-vention.

The sociology of housing is understood by the author of the paper as a science concerning the social dynamics relevant in housing, living and inhabited space context. The goal of the paper is to remind the role of Polish sociology of housing in process of showing the importance of the land use planning and combining the qualities of social and physical space in development of the inhabited space. The article also concerns the genesis and the achievements of sociology of housing in Poland as well as the history and the conditions of housing policy in Poland and in Western Europe. The article also contains proposals of future reorientation of the sociology of housing in the global dimension. The future development of settlement infrastructure, which forms the fundaments of settlement policy, may become a substantial platform for authentic and genuine sustainable development. The settlement infrastructure concept has a potential for balancing the development of the living space, which is determined by the inhabited space, and thus for genuine sustainable development. The aim is to notice the crucial role of the housing policy in modeling the development of the inhabited space. To achieve this the future objectives of sociology of housing in terms of monitoring and diagnosing the social space and physical relations are highlighted. The future sociology of housing should encompass the sociology of settlement - town's and village's sociology as well as rural areas sociology, thus transgressing the boundaries of inhabited space in general and urbanization space in particular. It should evolve into sociology of entire living space.

Opis:
East-Central Europe being distinguished – despite different views – a geographical space does not constitute a distinct and coherent political, economic, social, and cultural space. Changes taking place in contemporary Europe, in particular those associated with integration processes mark a new, specific dividing line, different from that during the Cold War. It runs across the geographical, and, consequently, social, political, economic and cultural space of East-Central Europe. It is constructed by both different standards and indicators of social, political and economic life in that part of Europe and the specific shape of cultural identity. The research objective of the paper is to identify and analyze the “fracture” of social space in this part of Europe. It is assumed that social space is a complex, multifaceted construction. Especially significant seems to be the problem of the political empowerments of civil society and its limitations, the problem of the socio-economic situation, and the problem of cultural identity. It is also assumed that the EU’s political strategy currently being pursued, consisting in relinquishing the prospect of EU enlargement towards the east to include selected countries of the so-called post-Soviet area, contributes to strengthening “the fracture” of East-Central Europe. This is apparently the result of the European Union’s implementation of “A Europe of Projects” strategy, which is the measures undertaken under the European Neighbourhood Policy, Eastern Partnership, or Black Sea Synergy.

Postindustrial social space is, in its essence, cyberspace – a sphere dictated by the media (an iconosphere). The rapid development of technology has led to the emergence of a specific type of human – the technological man. The technical man has caused the emergence of a new type of society known as the industrial society. Its peak form is the technopoly – a totalitarian technocracy which is both a kind of culture and state of mind. Shaped both by the culture of technopoly and the technostructure, the social space is changing its current form. There appear strong trends aimed, inter alia, at the loss of civitas, the deterritorialization of space and the senses, the disappearance of the sacred, the secularization of people’s households, the visualization of streets and trivialization of the city, etc.
Postindustrialna przestrzeń społeczna to w swojej istocie cyberprzestrzeń – obszar dyktatu mediów (ikonosfera).

Public open spaces can positively contribute to people’s quality of life. With the world’s growing urban population, especially in developing countries, quality public spaces are becoming increasingly important. Streets are considered important public spaces for people-environment interactions. Streets play an important social role in communities’ lives and can contribute to a sense of community. Using people-environment interaction as theoretical framework, the study used a qualitative approach to explore social dynamics in a multi-modal street (Helen Joseph Street) in a South Africa metropolitan city (Pretoria). Aspects of ethnography was applied using observations and semi-structured interviews to generate data from 32 participants about social dynamics in the street. Themes that emerged from the content analysis of the data include: the multi-functional role of the street, serving an economic, cultural, social, political and functional role; the generation of vigorous social interaction with multi-levels of contact/interaction; the interrelated nature of the social and spatial/built environment; the role of the street space in facilitating social interaction and being supportive of the social environment. The findings illustrate the interrelatedness and complexity of people and their environment in Helen Joseph Street. It is suggested that streets have the potential to positively impact on people’s social lives. Streets can act as platforms for social interaction by becoming self-reinforced social spaces that attract people and in return change urban spaces into vibrant public spaces.

Modern eco-neighbourhoods are designed to implement the 3e principles: ecology – equality -economy. The ecological aspects require harmony with nature and people. The equality concept stipulates living together in the environment which stimulates individual growth and well-being. The economic aspects encompasses promotion of short-distances circular economy, securing employment for the inhabitants and limiting wasteful spending. The goal of those principles is to create the neighbourhoods, where the well-being of inhabitants is promoted. This paper discusses how the designed environment based on 3e principles can influence the creation of community engagement, social bonds and social capital.
Współczesne eko-dzielnice mają realizować zasady 3e: ekologia - ekorówność - ekonomia. Aspekty ekologiczne wymagają harmonii z naturą i ludźmi.

The aim of the research presented in this paper is to draw attention to innovation and change in the perspective of the search for modern conditions of management in organisations. Organisations increasingly aim to build open structures and systems. They remain in dynamic relations with their environment, which is multi-directional and spontaneous. Innovations and organisational changes now take place mainly in the space of network social relations. Next to the introduction, the paper is composed of three parts, as well as a summary. The first section refers to the presentation of the evolution of some approaches to innovation issue. The second part takes the problem of organizational change as a real paradigm of the modern world of organization. The next section focuses on the dimensions of organizational networked social sphere. The last part presents a conclusions and an outline of the research results obtained. The research results oscillate around an author’s attempt to organize and crystallize an epistemological perspective related to the interpretation and evolution of innovation. Author postulates a holistic, systemic approach to the analysis of phenomena related to innovation in the world of contemporary organizations, as the outcome of this scientific discussion.
Celem prowadzonych badań przedstawionych w niniejszym artykule jest próba zwrócenia uwagi na innowację i zmianę w perspektywie poszukiwania współczesnych uwarunkowań zarządzania w organizacjach. Organizacje coraz częściej zmierzają w kierunku budowy struktur i systemów otwartych. Pozostają one w dynamicznych relacjach z otoczeniem, wielokierunkowym i spontanicznym. Innowacje i zmiany organizacyjne zachodzą dzisiaj przede wszystkim w przestrzeni sieciowych relacji społecznych. Autorka postuluje przyjęcie holistycznego, systemowego podejścia do analizy zjawisk związanych z innowacyjnością organizacji.

Opis:
Today it is hard to imagine a large modern city without a shopping mall. Actually mall emerged as a kind of city center for periphery residents. However, in today’s fast paced life the concept of “everything under one roof” has become an integral part of the urban structure. Mall makes it possible to meet not one but a number of needs at once. The fact that mall is analogous to city centre is confirmed not only by their functional content similarity, but also by structure. Like urban web is anchored at nodes of human activity, “shopping mall web” is anchored on nodes of retail and entertainment spaces. Like urban structures have a hierarchy of connections (from footpaths to roads), shopping mall structure has a hierarchy of social spaces (from side malls to the centre court). Despite this similarity, the socialization and communication problems in shopping malls remain unsolved. In this study the comparative analysis of urban and shopping mall structures was performed. We defined the key urban structure principles suitable for effective formation of social and public spaces of malls.

The starting point of this essay is a multidisciplinary study conducted by the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies of the Politecnico di Milano regarding the opportunities for the revitalisation of the almost 800 Community Cinemas owned by the Italian Catholic Church. These cinemas represent the local communities and are an important part of the contemporary Italian urban environment. Research shows that cinemas are threatened by how people currently consume audio-visual content, that there is a need to rethink the projection theatres as social gathering spaces open to the twenty-first-century neighbourhood, thanks to some features innate in the Community Cinemas that can be enhanced. Four case studies have been identified that represent the most common (or widest variation of) size and general layout among the 800 existing situations. A general model has been developed through the radical re-shaping of the space in accordance with new urban and social functions and implementing new technologies. By designing these case-study project solutions, it was possible to define that a new model of multipurpose social centre merged with a more traditional projection room is not only possible, but thanks to state-of-the-art technologies could represent a perfect match and an opportunity to make significant changes throughout a community.
