Opis:
Gaseous hydrocarbons and nitrogen mixtures are characterized with an own designed portable Raman system equipped with a high pressure autoclave and fiber-optic probe. Backscattered radiation is collected through a sapphire window with a probe and transferred to the spectrometer. Samples are measured for a set of pressures in the range of 1–150 bar in ambient temperature. Measurement conditions are set to maintain an one-phase system. Spectra are collected in a wide range of wavenumber 350–3500 cm–1. Initial composition of measured samples is measured be means of gas chromatography. Design computer algorithms automatically detects and characterizes Raman bands for given species and their peak areas. The influence of both pressure and concentration of a given element on given band position and area are demonstrated.

Raman spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the analysis of complex energetic materials. In this work, this technique has been used to observe the inter-molecular interactions occurring in nitrocellulose-based propellants containing 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane (RDX) and plasticized with 2,4-dinitro-2,4-diazahexane (DNDA6). The plasticization mechanism of nitrocellulose by DNDA6 was observed. RDX was found to be markedly uninvolved in chemical interactions in these matrices, hinting at a potential loss of stability in compositions for LOVA (LOw Vulnerability Ammunitions).

Opis:
Semiconductor low-dimensional structures of CdTe quantum dots (QDs) embedded in ZnTe matrix have been investigated by micro-Raman spectroscopy. A reference ZnTe sample (without dots) was also studied for comparison. Both samples were grown by a molecular beam epitaxy technique on the p-type GaAs substrate. The Raman measurements have been performed at room temperature. The samples were excited by an Ar2+ laser of 514.5 nm wavelength. The Raman spectra have been recorded for different acquisition parameters of the measurement. For the reference and QD sample localized longitudinal (LO) phonons of 210 cm–1 wavenumber associated with the ZnTe layer are observed. In the case of QD sample another broadband corresponding to the LO CdTe phonon related to the QD-layer appears at a wavenumber of 160 cm–1. Such behaviour does not exhibit the Raman spectra of the reference sample. Thus the Raman measurements confirm the presence of CdTe layer of quantum dots in the investigated material. Additionally, Raman spectra for both samples exhibit tellurium-related peaks at wavenumbers around 120 cm–1 and 140 cm–1, significantly increasing with laser time exposure. It is shown that the peaks are associated with the formation of Te aggregates on the ZnTe surface due to the laser damage in the ZnTe layer.

Opis:
Raman spectroscopy has become more popular due to its new prospective field applications in forensic sciences, war against terrorism, environment protection and other field chemical analysis. Raman spectrometers can be miniaturised to portable devices and their price is decreasing due to development of optoelectronics components. Unfortunately, this technology has still numerous limitations that influence their design and limit the scope of possible applications. The conception and design of the portable Raman spectrometer is described, including discussion of performance and limitations of representative components of such device available on the market. An enhanced portable Raman spectrometer using two lasers, one emitting at 355 nm and the other at 785 nm, and employing advanced signal acquisition and data processing methods is presenented. Advantages of such system are outlined and example measurement results acquired using equivalent hardware are presented. Data processing flow for identification of chemicals is also described.

The paper presents a brief review of methodologies and applications based on the spontaneous and stimulated Raman scattering in telecommunication, thermography and biomedicine. We present the results on cancer biodiagnostics by Raman imaging based on the spontaneous Raman scattering. We showed that combined Raman imaging based on spontaneous Raman scattering and AFM are capable of monitoring biomechanics of tumor vascularity, which is markedly heterogeneous with densely vascularized areas supplying oxygen and nutrients to rapidly growing parts of the tumor. The experimental evidence provides greater understanding of the biomechanics of cancer cell and tissue deformability and its interactions with the extracellular matrix environments offering enormous potential for significant new developments in cancer diagnostics, therapy and drug treatment.

In the presented work, an optical approach of stress determining in metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) grown quantum cascade laser (QCL) structures was reported. In the case of such sophisticated structures containing hundreds of thin layers, it is important to minimize the stress generated in the QCL core. Techniques enabling determination of stress in such thin layers as those described in the article are photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopies. Based on Raman shift or changes in photoluminescence signal, it is possible to analyze stress occurring in the structure.

Opis:
Shock impact-produced mineral alterations in two thin sections of the recently found Csátalja H4 ordinary chondrite meteorite are compared. Peak positions of Raman and infrared spectra of mineral clasts show peaks shifted in wavenumber relative to unshocked reference minerals, and both peak shifts and FWHM values seem to correlate to each other. In the less shocked thin section (Csátalja-1) a more monomineralic and homogeneous composition indicate shock pressures of <15 GPa, while the more shocked Csátalja-2 indicates shock pressure in the 15–17 GPa range. The highest identified infrared peak position shifts range between –48 and +28 cm–1 with peak broadening between 60–84 cm–1 in the case of the feldspars, which, together with sulphide globules, were produced by the shock itself. Feldspar spectra could be detected only by FTIR spectroscopy, but in most cases (above the S3 shock level) the mixed type of the pyroxene-feldspar spectra (both peaks in the same spectra) is in agreement with the shock-produced secondary feldspars. These grains are located around crystalline borders, and probably formed by selective melting, due to shock annealing. In reconstruction of the shock history, an early fragmentation by a lower shock effect and a later increased shock level-related vein and melt pocket formation occurred, with subsequent shock annealing; temporal reconstruction of the shock event is possible only in part. The joint usage of Raman and infrared spectroscopy provided useful insights into the shock-produced changes and their spatial inhomogeneity, while shocked feldspar could be better detected by infrared than by the Raman method.

During archaeological excavations in Poznań there were discovered a ducal palace, a chapel dated to the 10th century, and goldsmith’s workshop adjacent to them. In the layer of ashes at the bottom of the manufacture, there were fragments of gold found together with numerous glass beads and gems. Fourteen gems, made of rock crystal, agate, carnelian, milky chalcedony, garnet, were chosen for gemstone analysis and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The study material is dominated by beads (12 samples, of which six is faceted and six globular), while two pyrope samples have the cabochon cut. It should be emphasized that the rock crystal gems in the collection are usually heptagonal. Majority of the Poznań collection is of high quality, which is a sign of an advanced grinding and faceting technology. Pyrope from the Poznań collection contains inclusions of apatite, rutile, quartz, and magnetite, identified with micro-Raman spectroscopy. A similar combination of inclusions was recognized in pyrope from deposits in Vestřev near Turnov (Bohemia), and hence it indicates that the artifacts from Poznań were made of the pyrope from those deposits. Considering inclusions in rock crystal artifacts from the Poznań collection it was assumed that the mineral was also of the Bohemian origin.

This paper contains information about Raman spectroscopy, describing its possible application in the oil and gas industry. This method allows the performance of a series of repetitive measurements to determine the composition of samples and its changes with high accuracy. In the article, the data presented in the literature connected with Raman spectroscopy and the oil and gas industry is analyzed. This paper considered measurements of a natural gas composition in simulated in-situ conditions performed using Raman spectroscopy. The current research project is trying to develop a mobile apparatus which would use Raman spectroscopy for defining reservoir fluid compounds in high pressure and high temperature conditions. The preliminary measurements were carried out in the simulated in-situ in variant pressure conditions.

The authors put forward in earlier publications the concept of using carbon nanotubes (CNT) in order to improve the functional characteristics of selected structural components of internal combustion engines. The main goal of applying carbon nanotubes is to take advantage of its unique properties, which cannot be found among traditional construction materials, to reduce emissions and fuel consumption. To achieve this goal it is essential to come to know about elements and materials behaviour in specific application, for example piston or catalytic converter. In this article, selected methods in the field of atomic physics applied to the study of experimental engine components produced using nanotechnology are presented. For example, the electron microscopy in conjunction with registration of the characteristic X-ray and Raman spectroscopy were used. These test methods are improving the knowledge of the properties and design of pistons and catalytic converters with surface coated with multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The results of elements surface analysis, which were diverted from the engines after a series of test stand investigations, offer insight into the processes that take place in layers of carbon nanotubes in actual engine operating conditions. The knowledge gained with application of atomic physics methods allows achieving further improvement of carbon nanotubes layers and its functional characteristics.

Two coal samples from the Sośnica coal mine, Poland, were analysed in this study. One sample was the natural char collected at the contact of magmatic intrusion, and another sample was the raw coal that was pyrolised in a laboratory furnace. Temperature of pyrolysis was similar to that calculated for the intrusion. The obtained char was analysed to compare its features with those characterizing a natural char sample. Optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy studies show that the char from unaltered coal is characterized by the least developed structure, texture and microtexture compared to the natural char. Hence, it can be concluded that geological pressure generated by both the intrusion and the overburden, strongly affects the process of molecular ordering that took place during the heating of coal. The textural, structural or microtextural parameters of coal cannot be used as a geo-thermometer, because they are strongly dependent not only on the temperature but also on other factors.

Opis:
The work presents the results of a research carried out with PlasmaLab Plus 100 system, manufactured by Oxford Instruments Company. The system was configured for deposition of diamond-like carbon films by ICP PECVD method. The change of an initial value of DC bias was investigated as a function of set values of the generator power (RF generator and ICP generator) in the constant power of the RF generator operation mode. The research shows that the value of DC bias nearly linearly depends on the RF generator power value and is affected only in a small degree by the power of ICP discharge. The capability of an installed OES spectrometer has been used to ensure the same starting conditions for the deposition processes of DLC films. The analysis of OES spectra of RF plasma discharge used in the deposition processes shows that the increase in ICP discharge power value results in the increased efficiency of the ionization process of a gaseous precursor (CH4). The quality of deposited DLC layers was examined by Raman spectroscopy. Basing on the acquired Raman spectra, the theoretical content of sp3 bonds in the structure of the film was estimated. The content is ranging from 30% to 65% and depends on ICP PECVD deposition process parameters.
