Opis:
The first purpose of this paper is to analyze the direct and indirect, short- and long-term consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for men. The second purpose is to identify the mechanisms underlying the present and predicted pandemic’s impact on men’s life and health (both somatic and mental). The author interprets the higher men's mortality due to coronavirus rates and the males' suicide rates that heightened from the beginning of the pandemic due to life-style that reflects the toxic masculinity norms. This paper's theoretical framework is determined by the social (cultural) trauma theory and the Critical Studies on Men and Masculinities. The method used for the present study is desk research based on the integrated literature review including the results of empirical research directly or indirectly addressing males’ experience of the COVID-19 pandemic from the years 2019 and 2020, the previous pandemics (SARS in 2002-2004 and Ebola in 2014), other social crises caused by economic and political processes, and research explaining men’s stress-related behaviors.

Opis:
Aim. The aim is to present the results of research on the sexual nervousness of men and women. Methods. 87 Ukrainian men and women were interviewed. For the analysis of the obtained results, methods of statistical processing of data were used. Results. It has been established that there are differences between men and women in terms of sexual nervousness, attitudes towards pornographic materials, sexual arousal, friendly and exchange approaches to sex, signs of positive relationships with others and self-acceptance. Men are more focused on careful approach to sex and woman on friendly approach. Men are more loyal to pornographic products and reach sexual arousal faster. They have higher levels of sexual nervousness. For both men and women, sexual satisfaction is related to a reduction in sexual nervousness and an increase in a sense of feasibility in a sexual way. Dissatisfaction with a men’s sex life is related to emotional discomfort. With the growth of sexual-neurotic feeling and sexual actions the desire for a technically perfect sexual act increases neglecting other aspects of relationships and partner’s wishes. Women who are dependent on others tend to reject themselves and dissatisfaction with their sexual lives increases. Conclusions. Male and female sexuality is associated with many factors of the individual’s mental life. The experience of subjective well-being and quality of life includes sexual satisfaction. Sexual nervousness is closely related to personal nervousness, which in turn is a set of negative emotional feeling, expressed destructive and inconsistent personality traits, and impedes efficient social and psychological functioning. Sexual nervousness is defined as dissatisfaction, disappointment in sex life that leads to neurotic sexual response – difficulties in controlling the sexual urge, confusion, anxiety, etc.

Introduction. Research on the literature shows different and sometimes contradictory data about the physical activities of women and men. Aim. The goal of the research study is to compare selected aspects of physical activity in women and men. Material and methods. 100 men and 100 women were selected and tested using the “pairing method” and examined in terms of four variables: place of residence, education, marital status and age. A specially prepared survey questionnaire was used. Results. Men and women differ in terms of certain aspects of physical activity (especially its types), while their motivations and limitations only slightly differ. Conclusions. Women significantly more often prefer walking as a physical activity, while men prefer running, swimming, and using the weight room and gym for team sports. On working days, women have significantly less free time than men. The only motivating factor for physical activity that differentiates both groups is the “beauty” motif that is more often present in women. The groups do not differ in terms of obstacles keeping them from undertaking physical activity, although women more often reported a lack of time.

Opis:
The dominant hierarchy upon which the order of existence is predetermined has placed the man at the centre of creation; which is also substantiated by cultural norms that prioritized generic divides. The principles of feminism have been created to alter patriarchal hegemony in order to reconstruct the distorted female self of an egalitarian society. However, in an attempt to reconstruct these misconceptions upheld by patriarchy, most feminist texts and criticisms have denied the woman the agency of freewill and independent choices, except the continuous emphasis on feminist objectification that patriarchy seem to propagate. It is against this backdrop, that this paper interrogates the subjugation of the woman by her fellow woman and to outline a model of feminist liberation. This is consequent upon the fact that even at the disruption of patriarchy, some feminist scholars have failed to account for the role of women in using men as puns in the subjugation of their fellow women in the African novel. Consequently, this paper replicates Chinweizu’s Masculinist Dissection of Matriarchy and uses feminist-deconstruction to interrogate Ama Ata Aidoo’s Changes and Nawal El Saadawi’s A Woman at point Zero. To this effect, it submits that women are stakeholders in the structure of matriarchy and the substructure of patriarchy and men are mere puns in the structure of matriarchal subjugation of their fellow woman. The concept of pun(s) which is play on word is used in its expounded form on how women manipulate men physically and psychologically for their economic and political gains.

In Hungary the concept of the domestic violence means the abuse of women and children. While the definition and the interpretation of the concept is discussed between the representatives of the feminists and child protection aspect and the other abused members of the family system – older people, men – are given a little attention. In our study we report the results of the researches carried out in the circle of the abused men. Based on our data we submit that the general assumption is not sustainable because the spiritual, psychological violence is primarly the weapon of the abusive women, while physical violence is uncharacteristic for them: one-fourth of the respondents (throwing objects) and one-third of them (fights, bites or scratches) reported about physical violence within a partner relationship (between the insulted people of the two categories the overlap is 90%).

Opis:
The article presents the personality and spirituality of the Polish soldier, Colonel Łukasz Ciepliński (1913–1951), as a personal role model for contemporary men. The main source is secret messages written by him from a prison cell, which are an extremely valuable document about this character. The article presents the personality and male characteristics of a Polish officer: internal integration, maturity, bravery, care for others. There are also signs of the great respect he had for family values, for he was himself a husband and father. Another issue is his Christian spirituality: in suffering, like many prominent figures of the Church, he shows an extraordinary increase in theological virtues (faith, hope and love) as well as union with Christ and readiness for martyrdom.

The aim of the paper is to present and analyse the intersection between men, masculinities and physical violence in the comparative, European dimension as this issue is still too rarely raised in the existing literature dealing with issues on both violence, and men and masculinities. The presented findings result to a large extent from research conducted by an international team of researchers within the PROGRESS The Role of Men in Gender Equality project (2011–2012). The paper presents analysis regarding connections between perpetration of violence and the character of traditional, hegemonic masculinity; data on the scale and types of violence perpetrated and experienced by men from different European countries; analysis of the position of men as a victims of (physical) violence; and a presentation of the forms of men’s (social) activism against (male) violence.

Aim: The main goal of the article is to showcase how husbands performed the role of caregivers for their wives after breast cancer diagnosis. The researchers analysed this issue by comparing the perspectives of the male caregivers with their wives’ opinions. The wives were active members of Amazon clubs. Background: Partners of women with breast cancer are expected to assume responsibility for taking care of their wives. Simultaneously, however, they are not prepared to fulfil their new duties, nor are they being provided with any professional support in this regard. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight married couples, separately with wives and husbands. Results: Husbands perceive their role in their wives’ struggles as primarily supportive and channel any negative emotions via undertaken actions. They support their wives in four ways: by focusing on their wives’ feelings and caring about her, taking part in the healing process, manag- ing the household during the period of their wives’ recovery, and by bringing back normalcy into their lives. Conclusions: Limited knowledge about oncological diseases, deficiencies in the assistance services offered to husbands of women with breast cancer and stereotypes about gender roles contribute to the difficulties men face when taking care of their sick wives. Even the wives active participation in the Amazon movement does not seem to mitigate their problems.

Introduction and aim. Vasectomy was introduced in India in 1992 and is the most effective, simple, and safe permanent method of contraception yet its use is very limited among the population. The study’s objectives were to assess the knowledge, attitude, and perception towards vasectomy and the barriers to adoption among married men in Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Material and methods. A cross-sectional hospital-based study was conducted on married male attendants of patients and data were collected on sociodemographic details, knowledge regarding vasectomy, their attitude and perceptions towards vasectomy, and their intention of using vasectomy in the future. Results. Out of 300 participants, 258 (86%) participants have heard of vasectomy as a contraceptive method, and only one participant has undergone vasectomy. The majority (285; 95%) of the participants agreed that family planning is also a responsibility of males while nearly two-third (185; 61.7%) of them were not willing to undergo vasectomy in the future. Procedure-related factors, post-procedure-related factors, social factors, availability of alternate contraceptive methods, and preference for tubectomy were the barriers to the adoption of vasectomy. Conclusion. There is a need to provide correct information and counseling about vasectomy and non-scalpel vasectomy to eligible couples to increase the acceptance of vasectomy as a safe, effective, and cheaper method of contraception.

In-depth interviews with men teachers and other key personnel in early childhood education (ECE) revealed that the men are attempting to perform a type of subordinate masculinity that could challenge traditional gender relations. However, their attempts are thwarted by the gender regime embedded in the occupational structure, particularly the demand that they perform as “male role models” for the boys in their classes. This means that they are prescribed to perform in stereotypical ways and to purposely model traditional masculinity to boys, thereby inculcating hegemonic norms of masculinity.

The paper addresses the issue of discrimination against women in the world of cinema. The author examines the successive stages of the struggle pursued by women of cinema for equality and fair treatment in an industry dominated and ruled by men. The discussion covers the most important campaigns and movements challenging gender discrimination, such as #MeToo in the U.S. or the European #nobodysdoll, as well as watershed events from the author’s point of view, including the Oscar for Kathryn Bigelow – the first woman in history to receive the award for best director, Harvey Weinstein’s conviction for sexual assault, and the leak of Sony’s confidential financial documents. The public disclosure of these facts triggered a process that should be referred to as gender equalisation in the film industry. The author also takes a look at the latest events in the industry, such as Agnieszka Holland’s election as president of the European Film Academy. In addition, the paper also comments on the aspect of feminine nouns in Polish and the attitude towards them on the part of the women they are supposed to describe. Information is provided on the U.S. and European cinema markets, as well as some diagnoses of problems appearing so far and suggested solutions.
W artykule zamieszczono ponadto komentarz dotyczący feminatywów w języku polskim i stosunku kobiet do nazw żeńskich. W tekście można znaleźć informacje zarówno o amerykańskim, jak i europejskim rynku kinowym, a także diagnozy dotychczasowych problemów i propozycje ich rozwiązań.

This article explores the different ways in which gay men in Serbia perceive PrEP as a novel method of HIV prevention. In the article, I draw on data from my research on PrEP use among thirty gay men in Belgrade. The use of PrEP is still very low amongst gay communities in Serbia due to their rejection of PrEP and due to the stigma around PrEP use. In Serbia, the social significance of PrEP relates to HIV status disclosure on gay social/dating media. Paradoxically, on gay dating sites, the signifier “PrEP” blurs the line between HIV positive gay men – who have achieved undetectable HIV status through a potent ARV therapy – and those HIV negative gay men who use PrEP as a preventative tool against HIV transmission. In the article, I will argue that a new form of gay identity has emerged on gay dating apps in Serbia – “undetectable, on PrEP”. This new identity emerges from confusion in HIV risk assessment. The use of PrEP has been seen as a marker to denote someone’s HIV negative status and to protect them from HIV transmission. However, some gay men with an undetectable HIV status would like to be regarded as HIV negative even though they are not, and thus they use the signifier “on PrEP” to highlight their desire to claim an HIV negative status. PrEP has many symbolic valences: from HIV status disclosure to assumed promiscuity. As I will argue, while the health paradigm is of utmost importance for Serbian gay men, internalized stigma additionally drives the low uptake of PrEP amongst gay communities in Serbia, thus contributing to the confusion regarding PrEP use and the overall approach to HIV prevention. This article finds that those respondents who accept PrEP without stigma or confusion regarding their HIV status are also more willing and ready to recommend using PrEP to other gay men.

The main aim of the article is to describe how older men who are caring for their wives construct their mas- culinity in the face of their new role and tasks. My research draws on semi-structured, in-depth interviews with ten men between 64 and 90 years old who are the primary carers for their wives. The findings revealed four ways in which older care-givers talk about masculinity, and for all of them hegemonic masculinity was a point of reference. Masculinity was defined not only in relation to the carer’s role, but also old age and the state of men’s health. The ways of perceiving the activity of caring were crucial. Analysis allowed the main motives of providing care to emerge: obligation, love, and attachment. The research findings showed that an important factor in the way masculinity is constructed by older men caring for their wives was the definition of care. Men who perceive care as a masculine task feel less frustrated in the care-giver role, and sometimes gain satisfaction and a source of self-esteem from care-giving.
