Opis:
Cheiloscopy is a forensic investigation technique that deals with the identification based on lip traces. Based upon the research, it was established that the arrangement of lines on the red part of human lips is unique for each human being. The present study is an attempt to determine the pattern of lip prints and evaluate its uniqueness in a sample of Naga population and also their association with print in the four quadrants of the lip. A total of 100 (15-40) years individuals were randomly selected. With the help of brush a layer of lipstick was applied on the lips of the subject. Following the basis of Tsuchihashi’s classification the lip prints collected were studied. It was found that Type I’ pattern was predominant among the studied subjects followed by Type I and Type III pattern while Type V pattern was the least frequent Lip pattern distribution in (all four quadrants) in both males and females of Nagas. It is found that no two or more persons had similar features of lip grooves. The frequency of repetition of the lip print pattern in successive quadrant is found to be high. Lip print pattern can be used as an additional tool for personal identification.

One of the most frequent congenital malformations is cleft lip and/or palate. The above-mentioned defect is a serious medical and social problem, and knowledge concerning its incidence pictures the scale of this phenomenon. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of cleft lip and/or palate in children in Łódź during the period between 2001 and 2010. Material and methods. We were able to obtain data from The Polish Registry of Congenital Malformations concerning the number of live born infants, and birth of children with cleft malformations in Łódź during the period between 2001 and 2010. Results. The mean incidence of cleft malformations amounted to 1.16/1000 live born infants in Łódź during the period between 2001 and 2010. Conclusions. During the period between 2001 and 2010, a significant decrease in the prevalence of cleft lip and/or palate was observed in Łódź. The most common type of defect was isolated cleft palate, while the most rare - cleft lip. Considering boys the most frequent defect was cleft lip and palate, while in girls - isolated cleft palate. Attention should be drawn to the fact of the decreased number of deliveries in Łódź, observed in the past decade

Opis:
Introduction. The dramatic decline in the incidence of lip cancer, which until the 80s of the twentieth century was the cause of significant morbidity, is an example of changes in the structure and trends of cancer incidence both in Poland and in the regions. Aim. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to analyze the changes in the morbidity trend of the lip cancer during the last 50 years, both in Poland and in Podkarpacie. Material and methods. A retrospective analysis of the lip cancer morbidity in the Podkarpackie region and in Poland in the years 1963–2013 was carried out based on data from the literature and our own research. Results and conclusion. A steady decline in the incidence of lip cancer in Podkarpacie has been observed since 1982 for men and 1983 for women. In Poland these trends have been observed since 1972 for men and 1993 for women. In the analyzed period significant changes in the incidence structure in terms of sex are observed – from approximately 1:10 (women / men) in 1963 similarly in Podkarpackie and Poland – to 1:4.6 in Podkarpacie and 1: 2.6 in Poland in 2013.

Objective: Lip carcinoma, as classified according to TNM system, is one of localizations of oral carcinoma. However it differs in numerous factors from other head and neck cancer. Material: 342 patients with diagnosed lip carcinoma, collected from 2001 to 2012, who in majority came from one of Poland’s region – Holy Cross District. Among them 312 were treated primarily with surgery or with surgery + Rtg. Therapy. Methods:In retrospective survey the factors of age, sex and localization of lip carcinoma were taken into analysis. Apart of that in the subgroup who underwent surgery, the local and clinical staging, histopathology and selected patho-morphological factors were also presented. Results: In the analyzed group (n=342) the sex ratio was 6 : 1 in favor of men, with average age of 69,5 years, and the most common location (93,4%) of tumor was the lower lip. The majority of treated patients (n=312) have started therapy at the lover (T1+T2) local stage (93,9%), and in 97,4% squamous cell carcinoma was finally diagnosed. Discussion: Clinico-epidemiological characteristics of presented material is similar to data found in the literature. It must be stressed out that presented results might be comparable only with the data where TNM criteria of the lip are followed.

Introduction: Cleft lip and/or palate are the most common face malformations. The clinical picture of these anomalies is very variable. Cleft can include only the lip and/or alveolus, palate or all of these structures can be clefted. Aim: The aim of this paper is to present all particular types of clefts, their relationship to gender and body side in the group of children born in Lodz during the years 1981-2015. Material and method: The study group included 434 patients with facial clefts (218 males and 216 females) in the age between 4 weeks to 18 years who were born in Lodz during years 1981-2015. Results: In the analyzed group, there were 181 palate clefts (41.7%), 156 lip and palate clefts (36%) and 97 lip clefts (22.3%). A detailed analysis of clefts types showed that isolated palate clefts are definitely more frequent in females than males (112 vs. 69), while lip and palate clefts in boys than girls (96 vs. 60), furthermore left-sided clefts are more common than right-sided. Conclusions: During 35 years, the most common type of anomaly in children born in Lodz were palate clefts, followed by lip and palate clefts and the less frequent lip clefts. Palate clefts are more common in girls, while lip and palate clefts in boys. Left-sided clefts are two times more common than right-sided clefts.

Purpose: We examined the reliability of measurements using a newly developed perioral muscle pressure measuring device with a lip piece in healthy adults. Methods: Subjects were 40 healthy men (25.8 years) with normal stomatognathic function. Perioral muscle pressure measuring device with a lip piece was used to measure upper lip, lower lip and tongue pressure, and a balloon-based measurement device was used to measure tongue and cheek pressure. Each measurement was taken twice with a 1-min interval between the two measurements. We determined intra-rater reliability by using the intra-class correlation coefficient as a test of relative reliability. As a test of absolute reliability, Bland–Altman analysis was used to assess systematic bias and the 95% confidence interval of the minimal detectable change was calculated. Additionally, the coefficient of variation was calculated. The Spearman–Brown formula was calculated the number of measurements needed to achieve a confidence coefficient ≥0.9. Each set of measurements was followed by a second set that were taken 1 week later. Results: All measurements showed high values of intra-class correlation coefficient. Upper lip, tongue, and cheek pressure can be determined based on a single measurement, while lower lip pressure requires averaging twice. No systematic bias was observed. The coefficients of variation of measurements were almost the same between the two devices. Conclusion: Measurements were highly reliable regardless of the type of perioral muscles. Our findings suggest that the method described in this study is useful as a quantitative chair side method for examining perioral muscle pressure.

Patients with cleft lip and palate require long-term, multistage and multidisciplinary treatment whose first step is presurgical orthopaedic treatment (PSO). The reconstruction of the lip, alveolar process and nose in these patients are major plastic surgery challenges. Various presurgical procedures are undertaken to achieve optimal surgical outcomes. The aim of this article is to present selected techniques for the presurgical cleft lip and palate treatment in infants and critically evaluate the benefits, limitations and drawbacks of the methods used. The research was based on the literature review using keywords: presurgical treatment of cleft lip and palate in infants, presurgical orthopaedics in the treatment of cleft lip and palate in infants in PubMed, Google Scholar databases, and publications in orthodontics and infant orthopaedics out of these databases. PSO is a minimally invasive therapy performed between birth and first surgery. Anatomical and functional cleft palate disorders constitute indications for PSO. There are positive reports on PSO techniques and some of them can be implemented by the child’s caregivers at home. The authors of studies disagree on the PSO effectiveness. The lack of long-term research results, high costs of therapy and few therapy centres negatively influence the decision to undertake the therapy.

Objective: The assessment of cancer surgical treatment results, measured with oncological standards, linked with oncological treatment failures analysis, including also the occurrence of second primary cancer, create the basis for verification of applied treatment strategy. Material: 312 patients with lip carcinoma were treated primarily with surgery or in combination with post-surgical Rtg-therapy. Depending on local staging, in the most of cases the “V” or “W” resection with or without the vermilionectomy was performed. When resection required the reconstruction of lip defect, the Bernard-Burov method was the most commonly used. In cases where the regional I + II + III lymph node resection was performed it was followed by Rtg-therapy. Methods: Using the Kaplan-Meier method, the calculation of overall survival (OS), disease free survival (DFS) and disease specific survival (DSS) was done. The descriptive characteristic of oncologic treatment failures, including occurrence of second primary cancer was also presented. Results: The results of 3-years and 5-years overall, disease free and disease specific survivals have located within the limits presented in literature, what may be recognized as a support of applied treatment policy. In oncological treatment failures which have been recorded in 20,2%, the metastases to regional lymph nodes have dominated. In 76,2% treatment failures were observed in the first 3 years of follow up.

Opis:
This paper focuses on combining audio-visual signals for Polish speech recognition in conditions of the highly disturbed audio speech signal. Recognition of audio-visual speech was based on combined hidden Markov models (CHMM). The described methods were developed for a single isolated command, nevertheless their effectiveness indicated that they would also work similarly in continuous audiovisual speech recognition. The problem of a visual speech analysis is very difficult and computationally demanding, mostly because of an extreme amount of data that needs to be processed. Therefore, the method of audio-video speech recognition is used only while the audiospeech signal is exposed to a considerable level of distortion. There are proposed the authors’ own methods of the lip edges detection and a visual characteristic extraction in this paper. Moreover, the method of fusing speech characteristics for an audio-video signal was proposed and tested. A significant increase of recognition effectiveness and processing speed were noted during tests – for properly selected CHMM parameters and an adequate codebook size, besides the use of the appropriate fusion of audio-visual characteristics. The experimental results were very promising and close to those achieved by leading scientists in the field of audio-visual speech recognition.

Introduction. Cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CLP) is associated with hypodontia, supernumerary teeth, dysmorphology of the crown or root shape, teeth impaction and malposition. The prevalence of anomalies is higher than in general population. Objective. The aim of the review is description of dental anomalies affecting children with cleft lip or without cleft palate. Abbreviated description of the state of knowledge. The most common anomaly is teeth agenesis with prevalence of 28% – 66% of patients with CLP. Permanent dentition is more often affected (52.7%) than primary (16.2%), the cleft-side lateral incisor is most often missing. Hypodontia increases with severity of the cleft. Supernumeraries were found in 17.7% of the subjects with cleft lip and/or palate for primary maxillary dentition, and in 5.7% for permanent maxillary dentition. Supernumerary teeth are mostly maxillary laterals, both inside and outside the cleft, and have different variations in morphology and size. The anterior maxilla is a main area for supernumeraries occurrence. Lateral incisor in the cleft area is often peg-shaped, its microdontia was revealed in 5.6%; they can also have enamel hypoplasia – 8.9% of cases. Macrodontia was found in 12.5% and taurodontism in 15.2%. Canine impaction prevalence is different in studies from various cleft centres and ranged from 0% – 58%. Rotations of central incisors was found in the area of cleft in 86.7%. Transposition of maxillary canine and first premolars was found in 5.5% of bilateral, 8% of right, and 3.3% of left unilateral clefts in the study. Summary. Multiple teeth anomalies affect the population of children with cleft lip with or without palate. The most common problem is hypodontia. Treatment process of these patients demands experienced specialists in different fields of dentistry and complex, rigorous dental care.

The paper presents a personal identification method based on lips photographs. This method uses a new approach to the extraction and classification of characteristic features of the mouth from photographs. It eliminates the drawbacks that occur during the acquisition of lip print images with the use of the forensic method that requires special tools. Geometrical dimensions of the entire mouth as well as of the upper and lower lips were adopted as the features, on the basis of which the verification is performed. An ensemble classifier was used for the classification of the features obtained. The effectiveness of the classifier has been verified experimentally.

The aim of this acoustic study is to analyse the phoneme [ṭ] produced by school children surgically operated on for the cleft palate or cleft lip, in order to examine their vocal characteristics, to provide speech therapists with numerous concrete analyses of voice and speech, to effectively support them and to prevent some serious outcomes on their psychological and academic development. The motivation for this study was mainly stemming from the difficulties that Algerian schoolchildren with clefts encounter in the pronunciation of this phoneme. To carry out the study, several acoustic parameters were investigated in terms of the fundamental frequency F0, the first three formants F1, F2, and F3, the energy E0, the Voice Onset Time (VOT), the durations [CV] and [V] of the subsequent vowel [a]. For the analysis, further important parameters in the field of pathological speech were deployed, namely the degree of disturbance of F0 (jitter), the degree of disturbance of intensity (shimmer) and the HNR (Harmonics to Noise Ratio). Results revealed disturbance in the values of F1, F2, and F3 and stability in the values of F0. Another important reported aspect is the increase in the value of the VOT due to the difficulties in controlling the plosives’ successive closure and release.
