Opis:
Iris based authentication methods are popular due to their reliability and dependability. This paper proposes the method of the iris recognition that instead uses only two fragments of the pattern. The presented method allows for a simpler iris extraction, as it does not use a complex conversion of an iris pattern from a circular to rectangular shape. The results obtained from this experiment show similarities to other previous ones. Importantly, the proposed method may be treated as an alternative solution. The experiment confirmed the validity of the concept for the proposed iris recognition method. Moreover, this method is quicker in comparison to the others. The additional merit of the proposed solution is the elimination of the distortion which comes from the eyelids and eyelashes at the beginning of the iris image processing. Moreover, this method does not require using additional techniques to eliminate disturbances.

Opis:
Since the variability of data within readings from the same person is intrinsic property of every biometric system, the problem of finding a good representative - the template - was recognized and present since the beginning of biometrics. This problem was solved differently for different biometric types, yet usually the template somehow averages the collected data samples. However, for the iris type, the template is usually just one or a few samples. In this paper we describe the experiments that suggest that the averaging is also justified in case of iris template creation. This is an important fact, which can significantly improve a performance of biometric template protection methods for iris.

In this paper the Iris Finder program is presented for the first time. It is software for reliable iris localisation in images taken under visible light. The program is intended for researches on a system for automatic persons identification based on iris pattern. Performance of the software was verified on two databases. For the first database the program correctly localises iris for all 141 images. For the second database the iris was incorrectly localised only for 4 images from the entire database containing 1205 units.

This paper describes an application of the Zak-Gabor-based iris coding to build a secure biometric verification station (SBS), consisting of a professional iris capture camera, a processing unit with specially designed iris recognition and communication software, as well as a display (LCD). Specially designed protocol controls the access to the station and secures the communication between the station and the external world. Reliability of the Zak-Gabor-based coding, similarly to other wavelet-based methods, strongly depends on appropriate choice of the wavelets employed in image coding. This choice cannot be arbitrary and should be adequate to the employed iris image quality. Thus in this paper we propose an automatic iris feature selection mechanism employing, among others, the minimum redundancy, maximum relevance (mRMR) methodology as one, yet important, step to assess the optimal set of wavelets used in this iris recognition application. System reliability is assessed with approximately 1000 iris images collected by the station for 50 different eyes.

Opis:
Efficient and robust segmentation of iris images captured in the uncontrolled environments is one of the challenges of non-cooperative iris recognition systems. We address this problem by proposing a novel iris segmentation algorithm, which is suitable both for monochrome and color eye images. The method presented use modified Hough transform to roughly localize the possible iris and pupil boundaries, approximating them by circles. A voting mechanisms is applied to select a candidate iris regions. The detailed iris boundary is approximated by the spline curve. Its shape is determined by minimizing introduced boundary energy function. The described algorithm was submitted to the NICE.I iris image segmentation contest, when it was ranked 11th and 10th out of total 97.

Iris belongs to the Iridaceae family. It is one of the most important pharmaceutical and ornamental plants in the world. To assess the potyvirus incidence in natural resources of iris plants in Iran, Antigen Coated-Plate ELISA (ACP-ELISA) was performed on 490 symptomatic rhizomatous iris leaf samples, which detected the potyvirus in 36.7% of the samples. Genomic 3’ end of one mechanically non-transmitted potyvirus isolate, comprising a 3’ untranslated region (390 bp) and C-terminus of the coat protein (CP) gene (459 bp), was amplified by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), which was ligated into pTG19-T vector. The nucleotide sequence of amplicons was compared with related sequences, using Blastn software available at NCBI GenBank, and showed the highest similarity with Iris severe mosaic virus (ISMV) isolates. The nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequence of the CP C-terminus region was more than 83% identical with other ISMV isolates, therefore this isolate was designated as ISMV-Ir. This new ISMV isolate is closely related to the Chinese ISMV-PHz in phylogenetic analysis, based on the partial nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequence of the CP region. This is the first report of ISMV occurrence on Iris spp. in Iran.

The iris biometrics is considered one of the most accurate and robust methods of the identity verification. The unique iris features of an individual can be presented in a compact binary form which can be easily compared with the reference template to confirm identity. However in contrast to passwords and PINs biometric authentication factors cannot be revoked and changed as they are inherently connected to our characteristics. Once the biometric information is compromised or disclosed it became useless for the purpose of authentication. Therefore there is a need to perform iris features matching without revealing the features itself and the reference template. We propose an extension of the standard irisbased verification protocol which introduces a features and template locking mechanism, which guarantee that no sensitive information is exposed. Presented solutions can be easily integrated into authentication mechanisms used in modern computer networks.

The paper proposes a new iris coding method based on Zak-Gabor wavelet packet transform. The essential component of the iris recognition methodology design is an effective adaptation of the transformation parameters that makes the coding sensitive to the frequencies characterizing ones eye. We thus propose to calculate the between-to-within class ratio of weakly correlated Zak-Gabor transformation coefficients allowing for selection the frequencies the most suitable for iris recognition. The Zak-Gabor-based coding is non-reversible, i.e., it is impossible to reconstruct the original iris image given the iris template. Additionally, the inference about the iris image properties from the Zak-Gabor-based code is limited, providing a possibility to embed the biometric replay attack prevention methodology into the coding. We present the final prototype system design, including the hardware, and evaluate its performance using the database of 720 iris images.

Iris biometric for personal identification is based on capturing an eye image and obtaining features that will help in identifying a human being. However, captured images may not be of good quality due to variety of reasons e.g. occlusion, blurred images etc. Thus, it is important to assess image quality before applying feature extraction algorithm in order to avoid insufficient results. Poor quality images may affect the recognition as they have few sufficient feature information. Moreover, existing quality measures focuses on parameters or factors than feature information. In this paper, iris quality assessment research is extended by analysing the effect of entropy, contrast, area ratio, occlusion, blur, dilation and sharpness of an iris image which determines the iris size, amount of information and clearness of the features. A weighting method based on principal component analysis (PCA) is proposed to determine the influence each parameter has on the quality score. To test the proposed technique; Chinese Academy of Science Institute of Automation (CASIA), Internal Collection (IC) and University of Beira Interior (UBIRIS) databases are used. A conclusion is drawn that the combination of blur, dilation and sharpness parameters have the most influence in the quality of the image as they weighed more than other parameters

Opis:
This work presents the step by step tutorial for how to use cross entropy clustering for the iris segmentation. We present the detailed construction of a suitable Gaussian model which best fits for in the case of iris images, and this is the novelty of the proposal approach. The obtained results are promising, both pupil and iris are extracted properly and all the information necessary for human identification and verification can be extracted from the found parts of the iris.

With the recent shift towards mobile computing, new challenges for biometric authentication appear on the horizon. This paper provides a comprehensive study of cross-spectral iris recognition in a scenario, in which high quality color images obtained with a mobile phone are used against enrollment images collected in typical, near-infrared setups. Grayscale conversion of the color images that employs selective RGB channel choice depending on the iris coloration is shown to improve the recognition accuracy for some combinations of eye colors and matching software, when compared to using the red channel only, with equal error rates driven down to as low as 2%. The authors are not aware of any other paper focusing on cross-spectral iris recognition is a scenario with near-infrared enrollment using a professional iris recognition setup and then a mobile-based verication employing color images.

Opis:
Usage of biometric methods of person identification has recently become quite popular. Many developers are working on new biometric systems which have to be tested using biometric data. This work proposes the ways of generating synthetic biometric data designed for testing of iris based biometric systems. Two iris texture generation methods are presented here – one is based on Perlin noise, the other on the image quilting algorithm. Also a hybrid approach combining both methods is presented. The results of tests were also presented to demonstrate the utility of images generated using these methods in testing biometric systems and the consistency of the results obtained with the results for real images.
Rośnie popularność stosowania metod biometrycznych w identyfikacji osób, wielu badaczy pracuje nad nowymi systemami, a wymaga to danych, na których można by je testować. W niniejszej pracy zaproponowano sposób generowania sztucznych danych biometrycznych dla potrzeb testowania systemów bazujących na biometrii tęczówki ludzkiego oka. Przedstawiono dwie metody – jedna bazuje na szumie Perlina, natomiast druga na algorytmie generowania tekstu image quilting. Przedstawiono również podejście hybrydowe, łączące obydwie metody. Zawarto również wyniki testów, mających pokazać użyteczność obrazów wygenerowanych przy pomocy zaproponowanych metod w opisywanym zastosowaniu. Pokazano również ich spójność i podobieństwo do prawdziwych danych.

Batik is one of ethnical cultures of Indonesia. The batik production has spread throughout Indonesia. One of the batik industry areas is located in Jetis, Sidoarjo, Indonesia. This industry has been operating for approximately 350 years without processing its wastewater. The batik wastewater contains several toxic compounds such as high BOD, COD and color pigment. These compounds can be harmful for the environment if discharged directly to water bodies. Phyto-treatment might be a solution to overcome this problem. The use of Scirpus grossus and Iris pseudacorus with variations of waste irrigation system using the intermittent method showed a COD removal up to 89% and BOD removal up to 97%. Mixed culture of S. grossus and I. pseudacorus showed a better removal than its single culture. The highest removal of BOD and COD was obtained in reactor with mixed culture plants under Flood/Drain ratio of 2:1.

Opis:
Iris species have great economic importance for their use in ornamental and pharmaceutical industry. Flora of Turkey reports about 43 local taxons of which 16 are endemic. Iris suaveolens Boiss. et Reuter is an endemic species with high seed dormancy and has high tolerance to cold and drought. This study focused on seed dormancy break of I. suaveolens under in vitro conditions. In the first experiment, the seeds were given stratification treatment on MS medium containing different concentrations of BAP with or without NAA. The 2nd experiment reports effects of alternative combinations of cold (at 4°C, 24 h dark) – warm (16 h light photoperiod) conditions on medium containing different concentrations of plant growth regulators on agar solidified MS medium. Both experiments showed about 8.33% seed germination against 64.5% seed viability as confirmed by tetrazolium test. All germinating seeds were abnormal and very weak. In the third experiment, 10 minutes acid scarified seeds cultured at 24°C in 16 h light photo period on MS medium achieved 60.0% germination. Similar treatment under cold + dark condition was inhibitory and failed to show identical results. This underlines the importance of acid scarification, photoperiod and warm treatments of I. suaveolens seeds to break seed dormancy. All germinated seeds showed normal growth and development under field conditions.
