Opis:
Purpose: This paper aims to match subjective and objective measures of organizational innovativeness and test correlative relationship between the two. Methodology: The research adopts a quantitative approach, and applies correlation analysis to identify interdependencies. The study has been done in the aviation industry, as organizational innovativeness has so far been described especially in high-tech industries – however it has not been investigated within aviation industry yet. Findings: The results show that the discussions over reliability of research based on subjective measurements techniques are not unfounded. The evidence suggests that subjective measures are not correlated with objective measures, and the outcomes of third-party investigations differ considerably. Therefore decisions about measurements techniques should be deliberate, thought out, theoretically grounded and justified. In general, methodological recommendations provided by this paper could be boiled down to the ascertainment that accurate and reliable assessment of organizational innovativeness should use a set of objective measures addressing all stages of the innovation process. Originality: It should be noted that this study was restricted to only one industry and prone to some common bias. The aviation industry sample was relatively small and purposefully selected, disallowing conclusive statements made outside of this empirical setting. However despite the limitations this paper provides some significant contribution to evaluation and research on innovativeness. It compares two approaches to measurement and empirically proves which approach is more suitable in case of such a highly innovation-intensive sector like aviation. Moreover, it introduces a new in Polish research tool for subjective assessment of organizational innovativeness namely the questionnaire developed by Wang and Ahmed (2004).

The article describes a research study focused on determining the level of social support for innovative activities. Based on a questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews conducted among engineers working in the United States and in Poland, data was obtained to determine the level of social acceptance and the level of support from third parties and institutions encouraging innovative activities. Conducting a comparative analysis of innovation support in the United States and Poland made it possible to learn about the social climate strengthening and inhibiting innovative behavior in both countries. An important element in the aspect of social acceptance is the perception of innovation from the perspective of corporate social responsibility, responsibility of business leaders and engineers as well as sustainable development.

Bayesian belief networks are applied in determining the most important factors of the innovativeness level of national economies. The paper is divided into two parts. The first presentsthe basic theory of Bayesian networks whereas in the second, the belief networks have been generated by an inhouse developed computer system called BeliefSEEKER which was implemented to generate the determinants influencing the innovativeness level of national economies.Qualitative analysis of the generated belief networks provided a way to define a set of the most important dimensions influencing the innovativeness level of economies and then the indicators that form these dimensions. It has been proven that Bayesian networks are very effective methods for multidimensional analysis and forming conclusions and recommendations regarding the strength of each innovative determinant influencing the overall performance of a country’s economy.

The paper aims at empirical evaluation of the impact of R&D expenditures on the bioeconomy innovativeness. The research is based on the cross-sectional analyses of correlation and regression between the value of biotech R&D expenditures and the number of biotech patents granted in the EU countries. In particular, the study attempts to assess a relative effectiveness of R&D expenditures in public and business sectors. The data for the analysis were extracted from the OECD Statistical Database and Eurostat Database covering the period 2009-2014. Given the availability of data the examined sample covers 11 countries. The results indicate a positive and statistically significant impact of biotech R&D expenditures on bioeconomy innovativeness in the pooled sample of countries and suggest a higher effectiveness of private sources of funding.
Celem artykułu była ocena wpływu nakładów na działalność B+R w dziedzinie biotechnologii na innowacyjność biogospodarki. Do badania wykorzystano przekrojową analizę korelacji i regresji pomiędzy wartością nakładów na działalność B+R i liczbą uzyskanych patentów w dziedzinie biotechnologii w krajach członkowskich UE .

The process of transition of the CEE economies resulted in an increase in their innovativeness and internationalisation. The Polish economy as a transition one has been subject to these processes to a large extent. Due to the fact that innovativeness and internationalisation are perceived as related phenomena, a study of their changes and relationships between them in the transition process may bring interesting cognitive outcomes. The aim of the paper is to describe the changes in the level of innovativeness and internationalisation of the Polish economy when compared with other European economies from the transition process perspective.

Opis:
The goal of this article is to determine regularities concerning structural changes in the industrial and service sectors in Poland in the light of trends observable in the development of the world and national economies. The analysis embraces Poland in the years of the socio-economic transformation, but because of access to comparable data it focuses mainly on the years 2000–2014. Use is made of measures commonly applied in economic geography (employment, gross value added) and indicators based on them (mainly the structure and dynamics of change). First, the change in the role of the industrial and service sectors in the Polish economy as compared with other EU states is analysed in the light of the theoretical conceptions presented in the literature. Examined next are changes in the internal structure of the sectors and in the level of their innovativeness. The research showed there to be only slight changes in the role of the two sectors over the study period. Changes in the structure of the industrial sector tend towards its modernisation, which can signal steps taken for re industrialisation.

Opis:
Purpose: The main reason for developing the model was to fulfil the gap in the scope of synthetic/aggregate measure of corporate innovativeness in terms of company’s results in this area and their impact on its performance. Design/methodology/approach: In the proposed concept two aspects have been considered: quantitative and qualitative results of company’s innovation activity (i) and impact of this results on financial performance of company and its efficiency (ii). Due to the fact, that access to information on innovative activities results of companies is highly diversified, proposed model provides two versions to use: one, more general, based on public sources of data (Public Data Approach) and one, more detailed, based on data which should be collected through survey research (Survey Data Approach). The basis for corporate resultant innovativeness model creation was an assumption, that the ultimate market success of the company is not determined by how many innovative solutions it implements and introduces to the market and with what force it does it, but how these solutions will be accepted by the market and what economic benefits the company will receive due to them. Findings: Proposed methodology of innovativeness assessment gives a chance to eliminate several key shortcomings of the so far used methods and concepts of corporate innovativeness measurement and assessment. Research limitations/implications: Input data accessibility, development of knowledge (rules) bases needed to perform fuzzy inference. Practical implications: Presented model gives an opportunity to assess and compare enterprises in terms of their resultant innovativeness and then to assess the impact of this innovativeness on their performance. Social implications: Assessments generated by presented model can be basis for managerial decisions inside the assessed enterprise or investment decisions of investors in the capital market. Originality/value: Original approach for aggregate corporate resultant innovativeness assessment that eliminates several weaknesses of methods used so far.

Opis:
The discussion that has taken place in recent years on innovativeness in services is connected, on one side, with their growing role in the economy. On the other, it results from an increase in innovation as the main socio-economic development factor of countries and regions. Innovation is seen as an essential link in developing a strong economy, and its shortcomings may lead to an economic crisis. Innovations have become a new element playing a crucial role in crystallising a new economic model, particularly in developed countries. The growing role of services in the modern economy has led to an increased interest in service activities and service innovations. This paper aims to present the specificity of innovations in the service sector compared to the manufacturing industry based on Poland’s example. In the empirical analysis, data from the Central Statistical Office in Poland and EUROSTAT was used. An analysis of innovativeness in the service sector, based on traditional innovation measurement indicators, concludes that it is much lower than in the manufacturing industry. In the entire analysed period, the percentage of innovative enterprises in the service sector was lower than in the manufacturing industry by several percentage points. According to service sector type, organisation and marketing are more critical in terms of innovation. In their cases, the differences between manufacturing and services are minimal; however, it is more significant in products and processes.

This article presents an analysis of the determinants of a firm’s innovativeness deriving from its internal potential and characteristics. The analysis is based on research carried out on 1355 firms that applied for public subsidies from the Innovative Economy Operational Program in 2014. The methods applied are logit regression, comparative analysis and literature review. The analysis is structured according to Bielski’s model of an organization indicating the following subsystems: management, goals and values, people, technology and structure. This analysis shows that firms’ innovativeness depends mainly on the following factors: their level of cooperation with academia, longer presence on the market, being highly equipped with modern technologies, being a medium-sized or large firm, as well as being an industrial rather than a service firm. All of the organizational subsystems play a role in determining innovativeness, but the most important ones are the technical subsystem, psycho-social subsystem and the subsystem of structure.
