Opis:
The effects of the removal of Acid Green 16 (100 mg AG-16/dm3, COD=111 mg O2/dm3) from aqueous solutions by the UV/H2O2 process in UV reactors: low pressure lamp (LP, 15W) and medium pressure lamps (MP, 150W) are presented. The best results of AG-16 removal were obtained for H2O2 250 mg/dm3 (99.85%, AG-16=0.15 mg/dm3) and 200 mg/dm3 (99.80%, AG-16=0.20 mg/dm3) for LP and MP lamps, respectively, with the same parameters, i.e. 30 min reaction time and pH 6. Under these conditions, the AG-16 solution was completely discolored and the COD removal efficiency was 57.3% (LP lamp) and 63,4% (MP lamp). However, at optimum conditions of decolorisation, no decrease in the toxicity of solutions (Microtox test) was observed. For the MP lamp, the toxicity of solutions remained at the same level as in the initial solutions (Toxicity Unit, TU=3), whereas in the case of the LP lamp, the TU value after the process increased to 6. In conclusion, the AOPs for toxic pollutants should also be optimised from the point of view of toxicity.
Przedstawiono efekty usuwania barwnika Acid Green 16 (100 mg AG-16/dm3, ChZT=110.9 mg O2/dm3) z roztworów wodnych metodą UV/H2O2 z zastosowaniem dwóch reaktorów UV: z lampą niskociśnieniową (LP, 15W) i średniociśnieniową (MP, 150W). Najlepsze efekty usunięcia AG-16 uzyskano dla H2O2 250 mg/dm3 (99.85%, AG-16=0.15 mg/dm3) i 200 mg/dm3 (99.80%, AG-16=0.20 mg/dm3) odpowiednio dla lamp LP i MP przy tych samych pozostałych parametrach, tj. czasie reakcji 30 min i pH 6. W tych warunkach uzyskano całkowite odbarwienie roztworów barwnika AG-16, a obniżenie wartości ChZT wynosiło 57.3% (lampa LP) i 63,4% (lampa MP).

Opis:
The petroleum refining industry produces a large amount of spent catalysts which contain sulfur and some valuable metals. During the recovery of these valuable metals, sulfur should be processed and removed from the surface of the spent catalyst. Several chemical reagents including NaOH, Na2CO3, H2O2, CS2, and decanol were employed to investigate the removal of sulfur from the spent catalysts. NaOH and ultrasound-assisted oxidative treatment with H2O2 showed better performance than the other reagents for the removal of sulfur from spent catalyst. Sulfur and valuable metals dissolved together to the solution by using ultrasound-assisted oxidative treatment with H2O2, while the covered sulfur was removed from the spent catalyst without affecting the dissolution of valuable metals. The removal of sulfur as well as the leaching of valuable metals was discussed on the basis of oxidation and reduction reaction. The optimum conditions for sulfur removal were chosen as follows: temperature, 600C; pulp density, 20 g/dm3; reaction time, 1.5 h; stirring speed, 800 rpm; and NaOH concentration, 0.5 M. The obtained results can be applied to develop an environment-friendly process to treat sulfur from the spent catalysts.

Opis:
Catalytic converters contain the catalytic substance in their structure, which is a mixture of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). The prices of these metals and a growing demand for them in the market, make it necessary to recycle spent catalytic converters and recovery of PGMs. In the study, the effect of ozone and hydrogen peroxide application on the possibility of extracting PGM from used car catalysts was investigated. The catalytic carrier was milled, sieved and then the fractions with the desired grain size were treated with the appropriate HCl mixture and 3%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 30% H2O2, respectively, and the tests were also carried out at temperature 333 K. Ozone tests were conducted with the O3 flow in the range of 1,3,5 g/h. Samples for analysis were collected after 30 min, 1 h, 2 h, 3 h and after 4 h, respectively. The residue after the experiments and filtration process was also analysed. The obtained results confirmed the assumption that PGMs can be extracted using hydrochloric acid with the addition of H2O2 or ozone as oxidants. It allows to significantly intensify the carried out reactions and to improve the rate of PGMs transfer to the solution.

Opis:
The effects of CuSO4 and H2O2 on the flotation behavior of cyanide chalcopyrite were investigated by flotation tests, microcalorimetry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The underlying activation mechanism was studied in the perspective of micro-thermodynamics and surface properties. The flotation results indicated that cyanide chalcopyrite was strongly inhibited by sodium cyanide, with the maximum flotation recovery of 22.5% only. CuSO4 and H2O2 significantly improved the flotation of cyanide chalcopyrite, and the flotation recovery was increased to 92.28% and 84.35%, respectively. The micro-thermodynamics results indicated that the adsorption heat of butyl xanthate on cyanide chalcopyrite surface increased after the addition of CuSO4 and H2O2, as well as the reaction order. CuSO4 and H2O2 can significantly improve the adsorption of butyl xanthate on the surface of cyanide chalcopyrite by decreasing the apparent activation energy by 80.11% and 66.54%, respectively. XPS analysis indicated that the CuCN was generated on the surface of cyanide chalcopyrite, leading to the loss of sulfur and inhibiting the adsorption of collectors. As a result, the flotation of cyanide chalcopyrite was depressed. It is considered that, CuSO4 and H2O2 can improve the flotation of cyanide chalcopyrite by eleminating CuCN from its surface and increasing the concentration of S by 57.02% and 37.48%, respectively.

Characterization of free radical-induced cell injury processes of placenta cells is of vital importance for clinical medicine for the maintenance of intrauterine fetal life. The present study has analyzed cell injury processes in cells of the choriocarcinoma cell line JAR treated with menadione, an anticancer drug, and Hg2O2 in comparison to osteosarcoma 143B cells using electron microscopic and flow cytometric techniques. Flow cytometry on JAR cells exposed to 100 μM menadione and double-stained with Annexin V and propidium iodide (PI) detected apoptotic cells reaching the maximum after 4 h of incubation with a rapid decrease thereafter. Viable cells became decreased to 46% of the control after 2 h of incubation, reaching 5% after 4 h. Cells stainable with both Annexin V and PI began to increase distinctly after 2 h of incubation, reaching 55% after 4 h. Electron microscopy showed that cells stainable with both dyes specified above had condensed nuclei and swollen cytoplasm, suggesting that they were undergoing a switch of the cell death mode from apoptosis to necrosis. On the other hand, 90% of 143B cells remained intact after 4 h of menadione treatment although the intracellular levels of superoxide were always higher than those of JAR cells treated with the drug. In contrast, JAR cells were more resistant than 143B cells to H2O2-induced cytotoxicity. These results may suggest that cytotoxicity of menadione cannot be explained simply by oxygen free radicals generated from the drug. The resistance of JAR cells to oxygen free radical-induced cytotoxicity may be advantageous for intrauterine fetal life.

Opis:
Pharmaceutical wastewater is one of the major complex and toxic industrial effluents containing little or no biodegradable organic matters. In this study, H2O2/UV based advanced oxidation process (AOP) was used to remove organic materials from pharmaceutical industry effluent. For the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal radiation of medium pressure mercury vapor UV lamp was used in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2/UV). Results indicated that the efficiency of COD removal depends on the initial concentration H2O2, oxidation time and pH. The efficiency of COD removal at low H2O2con-centration was very low even coupled with UV light, which can be attributed to the low generation of hydroxyl radicals (OH). At high concentration of H2O2 (500 mg/dm3) and optimum pH (pH = 4), 87.6% removal efficiency could be achieved during 70 min oxidation. For high concentration of H2O2 (500 mg/dm3) at pH 3 and 7, the maximum COD removal efficiency was 28.5% and 15.2% respectively, indicating significant roles of pH and H2O2concentration in the process of COD removal.

Opis:
Surfactants after their use are discharged into aquatic ecosystems. These compounds may be harmful to fauna and flora in surface waters or can be toxic for microorganisms of the activated sludge or biofilm in WWTP. In order to determine effectiveness of different advanced oxidation processes on the degradation of surfactants, in this study the degradation of anionic surfactants in aqueous solution using photolysis by 254 nm irradiation and by advanced oxidation process in a H2O2/UVC system was investigated. Two representatives of anionic surfactants, linear alkyl benzene sulphonate (LAS-R11-14) and ether carboxylic derivate (EC-R12-14E10) were tested. The influence of pH, initial surfactant concentration and dose of hydrogen peroxide on the degradation was also studied. Results show outstanding effectiveness of the H2O2/UVC system in the removal of surfactant from aqueous solutions.
W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań degradacji wybranych surfaktantów anionowych w środowisku wodnym przy zastosowaniu promieniowania UVC i zaawansowanego utleniania w układzie H2O2/UVC. The following quaternary ammonium salts were used as phase transfer catalysts: methyltributylammonium chloride, (cetyl)pyridinium bromide, methyltrioctylammonium chloride, (cetyl)pyridinium chloride, dimethyl[dioctadecyl(76%)+dihexadecyl(24%)] ammonium chloride, tetrabutylammonium hydrogensulfate, didodecyldimethylammonium bromide and methyltrioctylammonium bromide. Their catalytic activity was evaluated on the basis of the degree of CDT and hydrogen peroxide conversion and the selectivities of transformation to ECDD in relation to consumed CDT and hydrogen peroxide. The most effective PT catalysts were selected based on the obtained results. Among the onium salts under study, the epoxidation of CDT with hydrogen peroxide proceeds the most effectively in the presence of methyltrioctylammonium chloride (Aliquat® 336) and (cetyl)pyridinium chloride (CPC). The relatively good results of CDT epoxidation were also achieved in the presence of Arquad® 2HT and (cetyl)pyridinium bromide.

It was found that obtained coatings have pores with different shapes and diameters and/or size/dimentions. The Ca/P, Mg/P, Zn/P, Cu/P, and M/P ratios (M=Ca+Mg+Zn+Cu) were equal to 0.074, 0.046, 0.056, 0.042, and 0.218, respectively. The highest value of each of these ratios was recorded for 650 VDC. It may be concluded that the obtained PEO coatings structures most likely are similar to hydroxyapatite-like structures, in which the Ca2+ may be replaced with Zn2+, Mg2+, Cu2+.

Opis:
In present work, SEM and EDS results of porous and enriched in calcium, copper, magnesium and phosphorus coatings, which were obtained during 3-minute treatments of Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation PEO (Micro Arc Oxidation MAO) processes on CP Titanium Grade 2 at two potentials, i.e. 500 VDC and 650 VDC, are presented. It was found that the voltage of that process influences the chemical composition of coatings shapes obtained on titanium in electrolytes containing calcium, copper and magnesium nitrates. The pores shapes of PEO coatings formed on titanium in electrolytes containing calcium, copper and magnesium nitrates are presented, too. In addition, it was also noted that with using of higher voltage (here 650 VDC) of PEO treatments, the higher Ca/P, Cu/P and Mg/P ratios were found than those after treatments at 500 VDC.

Opis:
In this work, the SEM and EDS results of porous and enriched in calcium or zinc coatings, which were obtained during 3-minute treatments using Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (Micro Arc Oxidation) processes on CP Titanium Grade 2 at ramp potentials (linear polarization) from 0 up to 650 VDC in electrolytes containing 500 g Ca(NO3)2∙4H2O and/or 500 g Zn(NO3)2∙6H2O in 1 L H3PO4, are presented. It was found that obtained coatings have pores with different shapes and diameters. The Ca/P and Zn/P ratios by atomic concentration are the same and equal to 0.2, what may suggest hydroxyapatite-like structure (M,Ti)x(PO4)y, where M = {Ca, Zn}.
