Opis:
Efforts on the management of water resources, especially irrigation and drainage, in arid-semiarid areas are extremely important for the sustainability of irrigated agriculture. Groundwater level should be constantly monitored and kept at the desired level in the project which is achieve the expected benefits from investments made for this goal. The research was done in right bank irrigation area which is located in Southeast Turkey, Suruc Plain in 2017. The spatial and temporal fluctuations of the groundwater table depth and groundwater salinity were measured in the course of five-month-periods; from July to October. The results of depth (m) and salinity (µmhos cm-1) of the groundwater observation wells were mapped using geographical information system (GIS). The results showed that groundwater was not found in many observation wells, while groundwater depth reached to a critical threshold level (2 m (risk free for drainage) from July to October in the study area. The groundwater salinity was found to be less than 2250 µmhos cm-1 at the research area. Depending on the research findings, it was noted that there were not any waterlogging, drainage and salinity problems stemming from the rise of groundwater table due to short-term irrigated agriculture in the plain.

Opis:
The coastal area and archipelago of the Gulf of Finland mostly comprises bedrock terrain with a generally thin soil cover and represents a distinct hydrogeological regime. The bulk of the bedrock area consists of relatively unbroken blocks with small, hydraulically uniform systems. The direct groundwater flow from the blocks to the sea is restricted to the blocks bordering the sea. The blocks are crossed by faults and fractures, which locally form long broken zones inside the rock mass. A single fault can catch water from several blocks and also from the soil cover. Most groundwater in the coastal strip flows to the sea through the bedrock fault zones, which are thought to represent the most favourable flow conditions. The dimensions of hydraulically uniform horizons, hydraulic conductivities and hydraulic gradients of the fault zones are poorly known. The estimated groundwater flow distance from the land to the sea in the faults reaches 8–10 km, thought the average distance may only be around 2 km. In the block areas the flow distance is even shorter, down to about one kilometre. On the whole, the amount of groundwater discharging directly to the sea from this regime (excluding overlying sand and gravel deposits), which has a surface area of around 2100 km2, is approximately 4 m3 s–1. This is a third of the total direct discharge to the sea in the coastal areas of Finland.

Opis:
Coastal aquifers are usually vulnerable to contamination by saltwater intrusion. The degree of contamination depends on the amount of former seawater intruding the aquifer as submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). A three-dimensional numerical SEAWAT model was developed to provide insights to the responses of saltwater intrusion and amount of seawater portion of SGD, to groundwater withdrawal from four wells at different spatial locations. The results showed that saltwater wedge encroachment varies with a withdrawal rate and well location. Increasing withdrawal rates from 0.165 $m^3$/s to 0.53166 $m^3$/s resulted in a noticeable increase in wedge encroachment into the aquifer from 589 m to 1319 m, respectively, regardless of the distance from the coastline. However, higher withdrawals from the wells closer to the coastline caused the hydraulic head near the seaside to drop below the terrestrial head, causing the saltwater wedge to be pushed back toward the sea. Simulations also showed that a coastal well might act as a hydraulic barrier that prevents the brackish zone from moving further inland, which is critically important in terms of groundwater management. Seawater contributed from 5% to above 33% in SGD. Although the withdrawal rates from Well 3 were 10 to 20 times larger than the Well 2 rates, the seawater contribution associated with Well 3 was about the same. This is attributed to the horizontal vicinity of Well 2 to the seacoast boundary compared to Well 3 even though Well 3 is deeper than Well 2, demonstrating that it is the horizontal location that governs the amount of abstracted former seawater.

Results of Quaternary aquifer flow calculations are presented for the Vistula Delta Plain and the southern Kashubian Lakeland edge zone. The Quaternary level is one of the most important water supply resources for the city of Gdansk. The numerical simulations of groundwater flow were performed using the Modflow and Modpath codes and the Groundwater Modeling System (GMS 3.1) package. Calculations representing the state prior to the launch of the Lipce intake were performed under steady state conditions. The model was calibrated, which enabled simulation of groundwater flow under transient conditions. Calculation for the years 1969-1985 have shown the evolution of a Quaternary aquifer depression cone. The inflow from river Dead Vistula to the Quaternary aquifer is recognized through particle path solution for a selected water particle. The numerical solution has confirmed the observed increase of Cl- ions in the Grodza Kamienna intake after 1969.

Preliminary valorisaion of the Major Groudwater Basins, including the assesment of groundwater useful properties, as well as necessity and order of protective measures (Paczyński, 2003) is a research project undertaken by Polish Geological Institute at the request of the Minister of Environment. The PGI performed an assessment of the MGBs taking into account a wide range of aspects and with use of various documentations, results of studies, publications, archival and cartographic data. The two years hydrogeological research was cartographically summarized in the Map of Preliminary Valorisation of the Major Groundwater Basins in 1 : 500,000 scale, which is another step in documenting the Major Groundwater Basins. The valorisation revealed that most of the documented MGBs urgently require establishing protective zones and that there is an pressing necessity of implementing and designating “Strategic Groundwater Basins”.

This study uses groundwater isotopes and ion composition to verify model simulations and ecohydrological studies in the Drentsche Aa nature reserve in The Netherlands, which is representative for the northwestern wetland areas in the Ice Marginal Landscape zone. At eight field sites, a total of 24 samples were analysed for their 13C, 14C, 2H, and 18O isotopes and ionic composition. The isotopes indicate that most of the fen peatlands in the area depend on the exfiltration of sub-regional groundwater flows, which confirmed the previous model simulations and ecohydrological studies. At three sites, isotopes and ionic composition indicate that the groundwater from the sub-regional system has been replaced by local infiltrated rainwater, due to nearby groundwater abstractions for drinking water, which influenced the success rates of the restoration measures. Furthermore, the evidence from chloride and 14C contents was found to indicate the presence of more saline groundwater, which are influenced by the groundwater flows near salt diapirs. Groundwater abstractions may enhance the upward flow of the saline groundwater to eventually exfiltrate at the wetlands, affecting the biodiversity of the nature reserve.

Groundwater is a very important natural resource to support the activities of the residents of Pakis District, Malang Regency. On the other hand, increased activity puts pressure on groundwater quality. Agricultural intensification, urbanisation, and industrialisation can be sources of pollutants. Hydrological factors, topography, lithology, and surrounding rainfall are triggers for contamination of groundwater. The main objective of this research is to determine the characteristics, quality of groundwater, and its susceptibility to pollution. To complete this research, geoelectric measurements were carried out at 43 points spread throughout the study area and sampling of 18 shallow wells in agricultural, residential, and industrial areas for chemical analysis. All data obtained were analysed to create a map of the spatial distribution of groundwater vulnerability. The results show that the groundwater in the study location is in the transition zone and flows through the volcanic rock layers. The level of groundwater pollution is in the uncontaminated status to heavily polluted with pollutants in the form of heavy metal manganese and Escherichia coli bacteria. The spatial distribution of groundwater intrinsic vulnerability shows low, moderate, and high levels of vulnerability, respectively 32.99%, 60.87%, and 6.14% of the research area. Groundwater specific vulnerability associated with land use factors shows that 26.25% are negligible, 42.46% are low, and 31.29% are moderate. From this it can be concluded that the study area has been polluted both geogenically and anthropogenically, therefore, special actions must be taken to restore the quality of groundwater.

Geothermal waters under national conditions have the status of minerals, which means that their exploitation is carried out in accordance with the provisions of Geological and Mining Law. In the area of the Podhale Basin, one of the boreholes that extracts water of elevated temperature is the Chochołów PIG-1 borehole which constitutes the basis for the functioning of the Chochołowskie Termy recreation complex. The main feature of the waters intake due to the correct functioning of the complex is the stability of temperature and physicochemical parameters. The variability of most important hydrogeological parameters (temperature, SEC, SO42-, Cl-, HCO3-, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+) with available data base were chosen for the analyzes. These parameters determine economic viability and proper conditions for the technical exploitation of geothermal borehole Chochołów PIG-1. Water chemistry has been studied in the area of ionic index markings determining the type of exploitating geothermal water. This paper presents the results of analyzes of selected parameters in the years 2016-2017 and indicates trends in their contents in the given period. The general conclusion is that under operating conditions in accordance with the approved performance, physicochemical parameters are characterized by relative stability. The appropriate exploitation of water from the Chochołów PIG-1 borehole allows for maintaining the proper temperature, which is the underpinning for the functioning of the recreation and balneology complex of the Chochołowskie Termy.

Opis:
Investigating the regime of groundwater levels is one of the main stages of hydrogeological research, which allows quantitative characterization of the process of formation and change of hydrogeological conditions in time. To date, there has been a problem in filling the series of groundwater levels (GWLs) that have gaps. During the formation of time series of data, there are usually gaps in connection with the change in the technique of observing the GWL, the untimely filling of data rows, the lack of the ability to conduct such observations, and others like that. However, it is not possible to completely exclude rows with spaces, as this may lead to inaccurate data while developing forecast and constructing predictive maps of groundwater levels. Therefore, the task is to compare the existing methods of filling the data series with spaces in order to choose the optimum for further work, with their practical verification.

Opis:
The paper discusses an effective and simple approach to preliminary long-term predictive modelling to the estimation of the effects of predicted climate change on groundwater resources in aquifer recharged by rain infiltration for the end of the 21st century. The groundwater resources in an analysed catchment were assessed based on predicted precipitation and air temperature from seven climate change projections in two sets of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) greenhouse gas emission scenarios (SRES), associated with various regional climate models (RCM). The predicted groundwater resources were obtained by diminishing the predicted renewable resources by recent environmental flows in a river dewatering the catchment. The predicted reserve was assessed taking into account the forecasted groundwater abstraction. The study revealed that the predicted groundwater reserve depended on the assumed prediction model, based on particular SRES and RCM ensembles. The groundwater resources in the study area at the close of the 21st century are expected to considerably decrease when compared to the reference period 1971-1990. The future groundwater reserve assessed by the climate change model based on IPCC emission scenario B2 connected with the regional climate model HIRHAM and regional climate model RCAO, may decrease when compared to the reference period, by 51 or 92%, respectively. In view of the IPCC emission scenario A2 assumptions, this preliminary predictive modelling shows that there may be a shortage of groundwater resources in the analysed catchment in the final decades of the 21st century.

The recharge zone of an aquifer supplying the Tursko well-field (Poland), located in an area of sparse water resources, shows groundwater contamination manifested by high nitrate concentrations and pharmaceutical compounds. This study documents the steady deterioration of groundwater chemistry during one decade of groundwater exploitation, and analyses wastewater impact on the groundwater chemistry using pharmaceutical compounds as anthropogenic tracers, with focus on the influence of treated wastewater and drainage water. These waters infiltrate into groundwater from a drainage ditch located in the water supply aquifer’s recharge zone. It is shown that strongly contaminated water can deliver organic matter and nutrients to the groundwater, activating or intensiying denitrification. As a result, the nitrate concentration has decreased in the groundwater, while concentrations of denitrification products have increased. Associated process of oxidation of organic matter causes periodic exceeding of limits allowed for drinking water. The ability of pharmaceutical compounds to act as anthropogenic tracers shows that infiltration of wastewater is a significant factor influencing drinking groundwater quality.

Mieszkańcy Kowna używają wodę pochodzącą z płytkiego poziomu wodonośnego, nie chronionego przed bezpośrednim zanieczyszczaniem. Z kolei miejskie studnie pobierają wodę rzeczną, przepływającą z Niemna i rzeki Neris.

The only source of the new hydrogeological data to this map can be provided by a groundwater monitoring system. The groundwater monitoring in Poland undergoes reconstruction according to Water Framework Directive (WFD) of the European Union. WFD is the general legal act oriented towards the sustainable utilization, protection and improvement of the state of water resources. Delineated groundwater bodies have to be monitored and the results are aimed for the action plans of the water management. Newly prepared directive “Groundwater vs. pollution” comprises more detailed procedures of monitoring, manners of sampling, elaboration of the results and presentation. It should be reflected also in the hydrogeological cartography.
