Opis:
Sorbian studies in Japan: trends and perspectives Summary How does it come that Japanese scholars get interested in Sorbian studies? In this paper we review how Sorbian studies emerged and evolved in Japan, centering on the humanities – especially on linguistics and literature studies. Of course, motivations to work on Sorbian studies vary from scholar to scholar. But characteristic of the situation in Japan is that along with interested Slavists, not a few Japanese researchers on Sorbian studies have begun their study with a German studies background. This fact suggests that a joint approach from the German and Slavistic viewpoints may enrich Sorbian studies in Japan. At the end of this paper, the actual list of works on Sorbian themes by Japanese researchers written in languages other than Japanese is added as an appendix.

Opis:
The article is dedicated to the reception of Mykhailo Hrushevsky’s academic achievements in German science and journalism during the first third of the 20th century, in the years of World War I and the interwar period. The authors emphasize that German scientists were generally honest about the achievements and activity of the Ukrainian historian. Despite their scepticism towards M. Hrushevsky’s Anti-Normanism ideology, they followed closely the emergence of his major scientific works. In the reception of the Ukrainian historian’s work, the academic motivation definitely dominated over the political one, although the latter indirectly appeared in many statements devoted to him. The authors prove the vivid presence of Hrushevsky’s thought in the German Slavic discourse of the period.
Artykuł poświęcony jest recepcji twórczości Mychajły Hruszewskiego w niemieckiej nauce i publicystyce w pierwszym trzydziestoleciu XX w., w latach I wojny światowej i w okresie międzywojennym.

Polish and German perspective in genre studies
Opis:
Drawing from both German and Polish linguistic and literary perspectives, the article attempts to examine genre changes within the genre pattern of the novel and decide whether Olga Tokarczuk’s Flights, described by the author herself as a novel, should be attributed to this genre. We assume that linguistic and literary tools will allow us to determine the most characteristic features of contemporary novel productions to decide on the nature of changes taking place within the studied genre. Looking at Tokarczuk’s work not through the prism of a single genre but, following Maria Wojtak, Kirsten Adamzik or Ulla Fix, from the perspective of inter-genre relations, allows not only to conclude that the analyzed material is located on the fringes of the genre pattern of the novel but also to see other inter-textual dependencies and consider the text under study as a genre in the form of a collection.

Opis:
The issues explored in the article concern experiencing acculturation stress by children inhabiting Gubin (on the Polish-German borderland) whose parents decided to educate and fulfill school duties in the German cultural environment in the neighbouring Guben. It was assumed that methodical education in German school of Polish children who live with their parents in their homeland: (a) contributes to the children’s applying different culturalization strategies in different areas of life - these differences are visible mostly in the public and private sphere and they change with growing up; (b) becomes the source of permanent and/or recurrent enculturation stress, which children at primary education age are not prepared to manage in the psycho-physical (individual) and social dimension as they lack family support and the support from the receiving environment (culture). What became the basis for the undertaken discussion were the results of some studies conducted in the Polish-German borderland in 2004. They concerned the axiological preferences of I-III class children living in culturally diversified environments as well as some new phenomena, not observed in other regions. They encouraged the author of this study to provide a broader view upon the issues of the culturalization process and to repeat the studies in 2007 and 2017 in order to capture the relative dynamics of this phenomenon.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to fill in the gap in knowledge about early academic work on tourism which had developed first of all in Europe. The author has tried to achieve this aim by conducting a retrospective analysis of chronological and institutional-methodological aspects of the evolution of tourism studies. As a result, he has distinguished two aspects (each divided into two): 1) chronological: a period of precursors and a formal academic period; 2) methodological: research within one discipline and interdisciplinary research. The results enabled the author to formulate general conclusions for critical discussion. It primarily concerns the domination of the English language and the Anglo-American tradition in the literature which is the reason why the global picture of achievements in tourism studies is incomplete and thus imperfect. The accomplishments of smaller, yet well-established, “national schools” are often ignored and remain almost unknown internationally. The author hopes that the article will be an encouragement to undertake research on early tourism studies in individual countries and to publish its results internationally as this will broaden knowledge of the origins of academic work in tourism.
