    The role of Jane Wilhelmina Stirling in Fryderyk Chopin’s life as well as in preserving his legacy is nowadays underestimated. Jane Stirling was not only Chopin’s pupil, but also his patron. She organized a concert tour to England and Scotland for him and tried to support the composer financially. Moreover, she defrayed the costs of the composer’s funeral and erecting his gravestone. After his death, she focused on what Chopin had left passing away. It is thought that she purchased most of the items from his last flat; she acquired also the last piano the composer had played. She tried to protect the autograph manuscripts he had left, and attempted to arrange the publication of compositions that had been retained only in a sketch form.

    Although cultural tourism has been known since the very beginning of the European civilisation (the Ancient Greeks and Romans peregrines’), nowadays cultural events are a great attraction not only for a local community, but they are also a strong motivation for tourists to travel. It seems that one of the special research value is to consider how deeply cultural events, connected with ‘high art’ (museums, classical music, art events of superior quality), motivate a local community and tourists. Therefore, the main aim of our survey was to recognize the role and contribution of top cultural events (on the example of ‘the Chopin Year 2010’) in marketing a city’s image and to evaluate its significance as a tourist attraction and its meaning to the local community. To examine the cultural tourism from visitors and the local community perspective and to obtain primary data, we undertook the explanatory and evaluative research. We also used (as secondary data) an academic literature review results, statistic information and materials obtained from the Chopin Museum in Warsaw, the Fryderyk Chopin Association and the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. This paper describes the main outcomes of the survey conducted in 2011–2015. In the past, cultural activities were rarely regarded as part of the tourism industry in Warsaw. The International Fryderyk Chopin Festivals and the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competitions were considered as different. From the beginning, they were aimed to be widely recognised international events, rather than attractions organised to meet the needs of the residents and domestic tourists. However, ‘the Chopin Year 2010’ celebrations remained highly exceptional as many different events took place, including ‘street music.’ They were aimed broader than to satisfy only a rather narrow niche of professional musicians. In 2010 both the International Fryderyk Chopin Festival and the 16th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition were events not only shaped for special groups of music lovers, but also for the local community who was able to actively participate in these two big festivals.
    Tradycje podróży są bez wątpienia motywacją dla doznań kulturowych, znaną od początków rozwoju turystyki, obecnie coraz częściej stanowiącą podstawowy cel. Zatem ważne wydaje się zbadanie, jakie walory kulturowe i jakie wydarzenia są silnymi magnesami dla wyboru danej destynacji. Innym zagadnieniem jest poszukiwanie odpowiedzi na pytania: czy są to atrakcje interesujące jednakowo dla turystów i dla społeczności lokalnej? W jakim stopniu mają udział w popularyzacji kultury, edukacji, promocji miejsca, kreowaniu jego pozytywnego wizerunku? Kolejną kwestią, którą jak się wydaje warto rozważyć, jest udział nie tylko kultury popularnej (koncerty gwiazd muzyki popularnej), ale i znaczenie ‘kultury wysokiej’ (wystaw, festiwali muzyki klasycznej, wydarzeń artystycznych o ponadlokalnym znaczeniu) w motywacjach podejmowanych podróży. Celem naszych badań, podjętych w ramach projektu statutowego ds.-144 AWF, było poznanie wpływu Roku Jubileuszowego Fryderyka Chopina 2010 w Warszawie na rozwój turystyki kulturowej.

    The main aim of this paper is to examine the discourse on Frédéric Chopin that took place in Poland in 1949, when the 100th anniversary of his birth coincided with the culmination of the socialist realist propaganda in the field of Polish culture. The discourse, initiated and moderated under effective surveillance of the Polish People’s Republic’s government, was filled with communist ideology. The authorities aimed at creating a sense of communion in the Polish nation, therefore they undertook numerous actions in the area of cultivating memory of Chopin and reception of his works. The composer was used as a banner under which the culture of socialist realism was to be consolidated. Chopin was presented by the narrators in the socialist realist context in various dimensions. “Deep humanism”, “truth”, “optimism”, “sincerity” and “democratic features” of Chopin’s music were the crucial notions used by them. Chopin was depicted, among others, as a revolutionist and a prophet of triumph of communism. The oeuvre of Chopin was said to bring together “fraternal countries and nations”, Polish People’s Republic and Soviet Union, while being simultaneously a crucial element of class conflict. The authorities had a tendency to overemphasize folk roots of his compositions, thus among musical genres composed by Chopin the importance of Mazurka was exaggerated. Other genres without such strong folk connotations, as sonatas, ballades and scherzos, were marginalized in the discourse.

    Artykuł stanowi analizę trzech konceptów kulturowych, które „kalają” biografię Fryderyka Chopina, geniusza (polskiego) romantyzmu w ujęciu performatywnym. Po pierwsze, namysłowi poddana jest idea gender i rozmyta tożsamość płciowa Chopina w dziewiętnastowiecznej historiografii. Po drugie, fenomen queerowości Chopina, jego dandyzm i związek z cross-dresserką George Sand. Trzeci aspekt biografii artysty, który jest tu omawiany, to kwestia narodowości: przywiązanie Chopina do polskości, a zarazem kosmopolityczny modus życia. Tradycyjne ujęcia biografii Chopina, jak również organiczenia „(arcy)polskiego dyskursu romantycznego” czy też etnocentrycznej tradycji polskiego romantyzmu prowadzą do jednowymiarowej reprezentacji tej postaci. Spojrzenie na życie i twórczość kompozytora przez soczewkę kultury popularnej, a także z użyciem instrumentarium postmodernistycznego samo w sobie stanowi punkt sporu romantycznego, a także sporu o romantyzm. Zatem próba naświetlenia niektórych faktów i epizodów biografii Chopina z innej strony, a także próba obalenia tradycyjnego wizerunku Fryderyka Chopina wydają się ważne i ciekawe, gdyż pozwalają na inny ogląd romantyzmu i jego kontrkultur, a w dalszej perspektywie stawiają pytania o miejsce tradycji romantycznej w nowoczesności.
    The paper explores three phenomenona which „taint” the biography of Fryderyk Chopin, the ultimate (Polish) Romantic Genius. Firstly, the notion of gender and the portrayal of Chopin in feminine terms in nineteenth century historiography. Secondly, the phenomenon of the queer, tracing his dandyism and his relationship with the cross-dresser artist George Sand. Thirdly, his dual nationality (despite his deep and genuine nostalgia for Poland) and cosmopolitan approach to life and art. Over-romanticized sources, which are still the mainstream for presenting the life and work of the composer always stress the patriotic card and tend to be rather conservative. The creation of new cultural phenomena by way of Chopin’s performative presence is usually treated with distance and scepticism by scholars from the „classical” school. Thus the pop-cultural presentation of Chopin’s biography with postmodern notions applied to some aspects of his life or the mythical reality it created, may be viewed as a point of contention.Therefore the examination of Chopin’s biography from an altered perspective allows us to discuss Romanticism and its countercultures as well as to place this dispute in the landscape of Romanticism vs. Modernity.

    Fryderyk Chopin związany jest z Czechami poprzez liczne wizyty w tamtejszych uzdrowiskach (Karlowe Wary, Praga, Děčín, Cieplice i Marienbad). W Czechach poznał i zakochał się nieszczęśliwie w Marii Wodzińskiej. W Pradze zapoznał się z Václavem Hanką, reprezentującym czeskie odrodzenie narodowe, a także ze słynnymi kompozytorami tamtych czasów. Kompozytor został zaproszony do koncertowania w kilku czeskich zamkach; otrzymał szczególnie ciepłe powitanie w Děčínie. Jego nauczyciele muzyki w Warszawie byli pochodzenia czeskiego. Liczne relacje Chopina z Czechami przyczyniły się do powstania Towarzystwa Fryderyka Chopina, międzynarodowego festiwalu odbywającego się w Mariańskich Łaźniach (dawniej Marienbad), a także do organizacji sympozjów muzycznych. Osoba i twórczość Chopina zainspirowała licznych czeskich twórców i artystów (m.in. Kamila Bednářa, Jiří Karena, Josefa Páveka, Oldřicha Zemka oraz Vladislava Mareša). Uzupełniający charakter mają uwagi dotyczące interpretacji relacji między literaturą a muzyką w twórczości polskich pisarzy (m.in. Jarosława Iwaszkiewicza, Tadeusza Łopalewskiego, Marii Kuncewiczowej, Juliusza Kadena-Bandrowskiego).
    The composer Frederic Chopin is connected with Czechia through a number of visits (in Carlsbad, Prague, Děčín, Teplice, and Marienbad) which he spent joyfully meeting his family, who lived in the Russian-occupied Poland. In Czechia, he met and fell deeply in love with Maria Wodzińska, who, unfortunately, did not reciprocate his feelings. In Prague, he became acquainted with Czech national revivalists (Václav Hanka, among others) and with famous composers of the time. In Vienna, the centre of the Habsburg monarchy, he met many Czech composers and befriended the violinist Josef Slavík. Chopin was invited to play in several Czech castles; he received a particularly warm welcome in Děčín. His music teachers in Warsaw were of Czech origin. Chopin’s numerous relationships with Czechia inspired the establishment of the Frederic Chopin Society, the international festival held in Mariánské Lázně (formerly Marienbad), and even musicological symposia. Many Czechs – poets, fiction writers, literary historians, musicians, and music scholars – emphasised how Chopin and his music influenced them. They were inspired by the many notable facts associated with Chopin’s visits and experiences in Czechia and in other locations throughout the Austrian Empire; by his romantic life, democratic thinking, personal qualities, and artistic skills. Various interesting literary works include poetry collections by Kamil Bednář, Jiří Karen, Josef Pávek, Oldřich Zemek, Karla Erbová, and a collection of three novellas by Vladislav Mareš. Apart from writing about Czech Chopin-related works and translating key Polish chopiniana into Czech, the author of this study focuses mainly on the interpretation of the relations between literature and music in the works of the these Polish writers: Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Tadeusz Łopalewski, Janina Siwkowska, Maria Kuncewiczowa, Juliusz Kaden-Bandrowski, Jerzy Broszkiewicz, Mira Jaworczakowa and more.

    This article deals with Fryderyk Chopin's juvenilia and the occasional verse dedicated to him by his his relatives and friends. Extraordinarily diverse in tone and nature (versified happy birthday and nameday messages, friendship book entries, humorous and partying verse), they offer unexpected insights into various aspects of the composer's biography and his participation in the literary culture of his epoch, especially the more private occasions and celebrations.

    Artykuł ma na celu podsumowanie działań podejmowanych wokół organizacji i przebiegu pierwszego powojennego konkursu chopinowskiego. Artykuł jest próbą zebrania faktów, relacji wspomnień dotyczących działań podejmowanych przez środowisko kultury muzycznej w Polsce po II wojnie światowej. Autorka skupia się na dokładnym opisie organizacji oraz przebiegu IV Międzynarodowego Konkursu Chopinowskiego, wykorzystując informacje dotychczas istniejące jedynie w niezależnych źródłach. W artykule zostały wykorzystanie pamiętniki, biografie, autobio- grafie, zapiski prywatne, wywiady przedstawicieli kultury polskiej, filmy archiwalne i dokumenty filmowe Polskiej Kroniki Filmowej. Celowo nie wykorzystano wyimków z prasy, ponieważ większość informacji prasowych została zawarta w nadmienionych pozycjach bibliograficznych, Z przeanalizowanych źródeł płynie zawarta w artykule opinia o tym, że organizacja pierwszego powojennego konkursu chopinowskiego w Warszawie była wydarzeniem wymagającym wzmożonego działania od wszystkich państwowych instytucji jak również prywatnego zaangażowania muzyków oraz pedagogów muzyki. Autorka uważa tak szczegółowy opis historyczno-kulturowy za słuszny i potrzebny, zwłaszcza w roku 2020, na który przypadła 210. rocznica urodzin Fryderyka Chopina i miał odbyć się XVIII Międzynarodowy Konkurs Pianistyczny im. Fryderyka Chopina.
    The article aims at summarizing different activities undertaken to organize and run the first post- war Chopin piano competition. It is an attempt to collect facts, accounts and memories concerning actions initiated by Polish music culture environment after the Second World War. The author fo- cuses on a detailed description of the organization and proceedings of the 4th International Piano Competition, making use of information that has existed in independent sources so far. The article uses diaries, biographies, autobiographies, private notes, interviews with representatives of Polish culture, archive films and documentaries belonging to the Polish Film Chronicle. Press excepts were not used on purpose, as most press information was included in the aforesaid bibliography entries. The analyzed sources let us conclude that the organization of the first post-was Chopin piano competition in Warsaw was an event requiring both the engagement of all state institutions and personal contribution of musicians and music teachers. The author considers such a detailed historical-cultural account justified and necessary, especially in 2020, the 210th birth anniversary of Frederic Chopin, the year in which the 18th Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition was supposed to take place.
