Opis:
By reminding the criteria of separation of Boyko Land as a cultural and historic territory and the Boykos as an ethnographic group the author aims to convince that we are not dealing with history of exploring the ethnographic areas, but the history of inventing them. Talking about the Boykos in Boyko Land is synonymous with commitment to a number of ideas from the history of science, the old concepts of culture, folk culture, ethnicity, cultural-historical school and anthropogeoghraphy, physical anthropology, and physiognomies, folklore and ethnography. Contrary to Boyko Land researchers the author claim that since the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present day in Ukraine they deal not with a great ethnic group – the Boykos, but with many local communities of Ruthenian mountaineers – the ethnographic groups. The old and popular in the north-eastern Carpathians depreciating words related to the alien, such as “Boyko” or “Lemko”, were released from the meaning by the intellectuals who were engaged in science, literature and politics in order to apply them to name the groups and their territories.

The paper presents the results of the academic museum Project called Anthropological reinterpretation of the Siberian collections from the Ethnographic Museum in Cracow that came from Polish 19th-century explorers of Siberia financed by the National Programme for the Development of Humanities (2016–2019). Four major topics of investigation among the collections’ source communities have been presented: Benedykt Dybowski’s collection from Kamchatka, Konstanty Podhorski’s collection from Chukotka, Nenets’ clothing donated by Izydor Sobański, and two cult figurines which reached the Cracow Museum from Jan Żurakowski. The presentation reveals the assumptions of the in-field museology: the method combining the anthropological perspective with museology elements. Furthermore, the digital repository www.etnomuzeum.eu/syberia is discussed; it is the one that makes the collections and research results available online. The paper may prove of interest to professionals curating collections, culture researchers, historians, cultural anthropologists, art historian, conservation services, museology theoreticians.

Opis:
The Old Believers are a religious and ethnic minority dwelling in the northeastern part of Poland. That religious group was formed as a result of the reforms within the Russian Orthodox Church, which took place in the 17th century. A large proportion of the Russian community objected to the radical changes introduced by patriarch Nikon, which gave rise to the Raskol. The authorities responded with mass repressions resulting in the migrations of Russians abroad, also to Poland. After the Second World War, the Old Believers in Poland attracted considerable interest of both journalists and academics. The post-war period saw a fair a number of publications describing the culture of the Old Ritualists that yielded a relatively comprehensive image of that community. The aim of this paper is to outline the mechanism behind the portrayal of the Old Believers through photography, which in the investigations of cultural anthropologists becomes the tool of capturing cultural reality, as well as the object of their research. Here, the analysis is concerned with the collection of ethnographic photographs by Eugeniusz Iwaniec. The author goes beyond the limitations of traditional understanding of ethnographic photography, qualified by virtue of its subject matter, extending the scope of such a notion by integrating the perspective of visual anthropology to reveal additional aspects of the analysed material, including the authors, the concept, the subject and the reception, which later become key reference points for the analysis.

The text is dedicated to the reflections on the author’s own ethnographic field research in the rural areas of the Republic of Macedonia, which has been carried out since 2011 to specify the strategies which local inhabitants develop to manage their everyday reality and practices. The author discusses the factors which influence an ethnographic field research and presents the reflexivity and awareness of the research process. She also focuses on researcher’s personality and individual features, on how the locals accept a stranger in their private space. The several key moments are underlined like coming to the field and its impact on the further activity through the reflection if the field which precedes next steps, gaining the confidence and respect, difficulties that the researcher faces in communication etc. All these moments (and many others) should be considered as an inevitable part of the work.

This article discusses the subject of sacrifices among the Slavs using textual, archeological and ethnographic evidence. Although it is a well-known fact that there are not many textual sources concerning early medieval Slavic culture and religion, some aspects of their customs and rituals can be reconstructed by referring to folkloristic materials. According to many scholars, Slavic folk culture (especially that of Eastern Slavs) has preserved some traces of pre-Christian practices, but it is important to maintain a careful approach to ethnographic sources and avoid far-reaching interpretations of archeological evidence in their light. In spite of methodological difficulties, by critically combining different categories of sources it seems possible to offer new interpretations of Slavic beliefs

The article focuses on selected aspects of transnational entrepreneurship, understood in terms of actions that go beyond national borders and lead to long-lasting innovations in sociotechnical spaces. These considerations rest on the ethnographic research conducted in years 2013–2016 in a globally oriented company situated in south-western Poland. While exploring the issue, the author moves between diff erent scales of analysis: from the macro-level of the postsocialist state, through the global infrastructure of neoliberal politics, to the specific working environment and the regional context. The adopted strategy of shifting perspectives is applied in order to point to the larger political, historical and economic contexts in which specific places are embedded and which influence the trajectories of lives of employees of global enterprises.

This article explores the discursive patterns of communicative events during the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022. Studied through an ethnographic discourse analysis lens (e.g., Hymes 1972b, Saville-Troike [1982] 2003), Polish front-page news articles are shown to be artefact-filled language environment anchored in culture (Duranti [1997] 1999, Hoijer 1953) that can be studied by means of communicational grammar (Chruszczewski 2002) consisting of well-entrenched conceptualisations in the form of keywords and collocations as concomitants of cultural scripts (Goddard and Wierzbicka 2014, Baker 2006, Wierzbicka 1997). It agues that legitimation of patterned representations is based on a three-fold conceptual typology: (1) the axiological (valuational) dimension (Romanyshyn 2020, Pomeroy 2004, Krzeszowski 1997), (2) the metaphorical account of spatial/territorial reference (proximization) (Cap 2013), (3) us vs. them dichotomy (Van Dijk 1992a). It demonstrates how Polish press manufactures and discursively creates ideological attachments which underlie Poland’s cultural legacy.

Opis:
This is an essay about addiction recovery based on a trading zone psychological methodology between an Aristotelian-Thomistic [A-T] psychology of addiction, particularly alcohol/drug addiction. It is an applied psychology where we cross over to other disciplines and exchange theories and practices with a specific target of addiction recovery in mind. We could say that we are interested in learning and borrowing for the sake of problem solving within complementary disciplines. The complimentary disciplines in this A-T psychology trading zone are psychoanalytical psychodynamics and a psychoanalytical ethnographic analysis of Alcoholics Anonymous. We use the terminology in the essay of module construction, i.e. module 1) The Habituation Perspective of the Addiction Trading Zone, 2) A-T Addiction Psychology and a Psychodynamics of the Searching-Recovering Soul, and 3) The Searching Recovering Soul, A Psychodynamic Conversion of Anxiety & Habituation. Each module contains psychological concepts that are considered as necessary for a synergistic action solution to the issue of alcoholic/addiction recovery. An A-T psychological trading zone module construction is hierarchical. It, therefore, requires that module one is grounded on an A-T metaphysical psychology that allows for a fitting exchange of principles, concepts, and techniques on the issue of addiction.

At the core of my investigation is the process of amalgamation of text and image within the boundaries of the illustrated book for young Soviet readers. As a part of the general desire to translate Communism into idioms and images accessible to children, books visualized ideological norms and goals in a way that guaranteed easy legibility and direct appeal, without sacrificing the political appeal of the message. Illustrated books presented the propagandistic content as a simple narrative or verse, while also casting it in images. A vehicle of ideology, an object of affection, and a product of labor, the illustrated book for the young Soviet reader became an important cultural phenomenon, despite its perceived simplicity and often a minimal set of technical devices.

Opis:
Nowadays art festivals engage more to organize their events in unusual places. Either for the sake of city branding or a pure cultural memory action, a performance might be set in a forgotten memory place. The place which is distinguished sharply by a comfortable concert hall becomes one of the actors of the event and the participant questions a past that s/he hasn’t been strongly connected. Thus, the individual is not only aroused by the performance itself and the information in the booklets but also physical environment has an affect. This article aims to tackle the contribution of color as an instrument of data collection in qualitative research. By using color tablets inspired by the colorist Kobayashi the colors are tested firstly as a visual to learn how they make sense in Izmir during International Izmir Festival. Secondly, they are questioned how the participants embed colors’ senses to the memory places where they attended to the concerts. The research process indicates that the experience of a concert might not be visually powerful enough to associate memory places with the colors. However, the technique of color tablets becomes prompting object which support the dialogue construction between the fieldworker and informant. Thus, as an instrument for evocation and conversation color tablets become interactive objects for remembering of the festival experience and it mediates the social roles of the informants and the fieldworker.

Since the early 1990s much has been written about how ethnographers should do fieldwork of the local in a globalizing world. The challenge of communicating their analyses authentically in a world of information overload is much less debated. To rectify this situation, I argue in this paper that five balancing acts are crucial to those who do ethnographies of the global, or “globographers,” in their writing. Emerging from a review of the history of fieldwork and writing, these balancing acts constitute a template of how a communicative consciousness may assist qualitative researchers in achieving ethnographic integrity.

In the literature analyzed there are no interdisciplinary researches that could combine both ethnographic and technological investigations of Lithuanian folk home textiles. Therefore, the goal of this article is to make a complex investigation of Lithuanian ethnographic home textiles analyzing its patterns, weaves, colour repeats and weave symmetry groups. 849 multipurpose ethnographic home textile fabrics (bedspreads, pillow-slips, slip-covers, towels, tablecloths, pieces of different purposes, curtains, bed sheets) from 5 Lithuanian museums were analyzed. In Lithuanian ethnographic home textiles six different types of patterns were distinguished, of which fancy, motley, checked and plane fabrics were the most popular. In the home textiles analyzed there were found 22 different types of weaves. Checked twill, plane and overshot four-harness weaves were the most popular. While analyzing symmetry groups of colour repeats and weaves according to classical principles of ornamentation, six symmetry groups were distinguished. Although patterns and weaves have the same symmetry groups, their distribution is different in both cases.
W analizowanej literaturze nie stwierdzono interdyscyplinarnych badań, które łączyłyby aspekty etnograficzne i technologiczne dotyczące litewskich tekstyliów ludowych. Celem badań była kompleksowa analiza tych zagadnień. Badano wzory, kolory, sploty. Przebadano 849 próbek tkanin (bielizna pościelowa, ręczniki, obrusy, zasłony itp.) pochodzących z 5 litewskich muzeów. Stwierdzono istnienie 6 różnych typów wzorów najbardziej popularnych. Z domowych wyrobów tekstylnych wyróżniono 22 typy splotów. Najbardziej popularne sploty to sploty skośne, lniany, z górnym wątkiem oraz cztero–nicielnicowe.

The article presents areas distinguished by local tradition and the preservation of rituals and customs in the Mazovian Voivodeship (Mazovia region) and points out the role of society in shaping and preserving intangible cultural heritage. Additionally, an assessment of the state of preservation or development of synthetic characteristics of the municipal landscape, such as tradition, identity, and localness, was carried out following the methodology outlined in the Ordinance of the Council of Ministers dated January 11, 2019, regarding the preparation of landscape audits. The analyses were conducted based on the results of a survey carried out by the research team of the Department of Spatial Planning and Environmental Sciences at the Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography at the Warsaw University of Technology, commissioned by the Mazovian Office of Regional Planning in Warsaw, within the territory of the Mazovian Voivodeship. The research survey included 9 questions related to cultural heritage, of which, for the purposes of this article, 4 questions directly related to material and intangible heritage were analyzed among the 6,160 surveys conducted. The scope of analysis of material heritage pertained to the presence of traditional architecture, and the intangible heritage included ethnographic regions, preserved traditions, rituals, and customs, as well as the engagement of the society in the “cultural life” of their small homelands. The analysis of the questionnaires allowed for the confirmation of the presence of previously identified and indicated elements in the documents of the voivodeship self-government, as well as the identification of new areas of tangible and intangible cultural heritage in the Mazovian voivodeship. These findings were compared with the literature on the subject and the records in the documents of the voivodeship self-government. The results of the study indicated the significant role of local self-government units, cultural institutions, as well as associations and organizations that bring together local communities in shaping and preserving the intangible cultural heritage. The degree of engagement of the respondents in cultivating traditions, rituals, and customs was found to be independent of their location in ethnographic regions, according to the survey responses. The responses of the survey participants also pointed to the “return to roots” trend resulting from the growing interest in folk culture, supported by popularizing and promoting folk traditions. In the process of intergenerational transfer of values and the richness of cultural heritage, education of the society, especially the younger generation, plays a crucial role.
Ponadto wykonano ocenę stanu zachowania lub wykształcenia cech syntetycznych krajobrazu gmin, tj. tradycji, tożsamości i swojskości, zgodnie z metodyką rozporządzenia Rady Ministrów z dnia 11 stycznia 2019 roku w sprawie sporządzania audytów krajobrazowych. Ankieta badawcza zawierała 9 pytań z zakresu dziedzictwa kulturowego, gdzie dla celów niniejszego artykułu przeanalizowano 4 dotyczące bezpośrednio dziedzictwa materialnego i niematerialnego wśród 6 160 wykonanych ankiet. Zakres analiz dziedzictwa materialnego dotyczył występowania tradycyjnej architektury a niematerialnego: regionów etnograficznych, kultywowanych tradycji, obrzędów i zwyczajów, a także zaangażowania społeczeństwa w „życie kulturalne” swoich małych ojczyzn.
