Opis:
Because of the rich oxygen-containing functional groups and developed pores on the Surface of low-rank coal, it is difficult to realize efficient separation during low-rank coal flotation using common oil collectors. Waste engine oil (WEO) is abundant in polar oxygen-containing functional groups and could be an alternative collector. In this study, the effect of WEO on low-rank coal floatation was assessed and engine oil (EO) was also used for comparison. The results show that the separation efficiency of low-rank coal can be significantly improved using WEO; additionally, 96.73% of the clean coal yield can be obtained when the WEO dosage was only 4 kg/t. Compared with EO, the bubble–particle induction time in the presence of WEO shortened from 430 to 220 ms. Moreover, more low-rank coal particles were captured and adhered to the bubble surface using WEO, which indicated a higher probability of bubble–particle attachment. Nonpolar components, polar components and metal ions synergistically promote the flotation separation enhancement of low-rank coal using WEO.

Opis:
The problem of engine oils and lubrication systems of marine diesel engines is an important issue in operation of engines. When considering the problems of exploitation of machines and devices, the lubricating oils are treated as one of the part of engine design, which should perform the functions: control friction between load-bearing surfaces, limit the temperature by carrying away heat from fluid fraction and fuel combustion, reduce corrosion etc. – general protect engine parts. The knowledge of the properties lubricating oils allows for proper selection them for the engine and correct use. During operation, the oil subjects' irreversible process of oil deterioration and it cannot properly fulfil their functions. Therefore important are frequent periodic checks of oil, it means monitoring. The state of the lubricating oil can be characterized by parameters such as viscosity, total base number, acid value, lubricating ability, flash point etc. Changes on these parameters of engine oil during exploitation, cause problems in fulfilling the primary functions of the oil. The target of the paper was the analysis and estimate of properties of trunk piston engine oil – Marinol RG 1240 after various times overwork on the sailing vessel “Dar Młodzieży” on the engine Cegielski-Sulzer 6AL20/24. The results were compared with the values critical and preventive limits and proposed several corrective actions for users the engine 6AL20/24.

Opis:
In the article, changes in the properties of oils during operation were characterized. The main reason for this is the continuous aging process of the used oil caused by the interaction of oxygen contained in the air, which reacts relatively easily with hydrocarbons and the oxidation process is accelerated just by high temperature. Then the problem of microorganisms occurring in petroleum products and their effect on the properties of oils and the operation of the internal combustion engine was presented. The next part of the article presents effective microorganisms, i.e. what they are and how they work, in particular, their composition and appropriate development conditions. In addition, some of their specific applications were briefly described. In the next part of the article, the research methodology, applied oil samples with additives of effective microorganisms, both for fresh oil and used oil were described. In addition, the measuring test stand with instrumentation and measuring device was shown. The main part of the article contains the characteristics of dynamic viscosity as a function of temperature for fresh oil and used oil compared with oils with the addition of microorganisms in liquid form and ceramic tubes. The developed graphs enabled analysis of the effect of the addition of microorganisms on oil viscosity as ecological products.

Effect of viscosity of a liquid on the far-field diffraction pattern due to spatial self-phase modulation is investigated. Chlorophyll extract in acetone at different concentrations is used as the low viscous nonlinear samples and commercial engine oils, synthetic and natural. It is also used as high viscous media. In the case of chlorophyll solution, the self-induced diffraction ring pattern in the far-field is a series of circular rings at the beginning; but later it is transformed to half circular symmetry. But for the high viscous engine oils we have observed circular fringes and there is no time dependent structural variation in the pattern. The coefficient of the intensity dependent nonlinear refractive index for all the liquid samples is evaluated.

Opis:
This paper presents the effect of lubricating additives used in engine oils on wear processes characteristic of rolling contact in the presence of a lubricating medium. A comprehensive approach to the problem was proposed by applying a D-optimal poliselective experimental design incorporating the influence of the most significant operational factors (load, temperature and lubricating additives). The study aimed to compare the effect of lubricants on surface wear at elevated temperatures using oils typical of engines used in passenger vehicles as a base enriched with additives. Using graphite, molybdenum disulphide, and ultra-dispersible copper particles can bring advantages and disadvantages that will increase the wear of engine components instead of prolonging their operation. Tribological tests were carried out on a T-03 tribotester (four-ball apparatus) under operating conditions taking into account the influence of temperature, load, type of additive or engine oil of different viscosity. The tribological tests carried out made it possible to determine the values of friction coefficients and the durability of the tested combination, while metallographic tests made it possible to determine the wear trace and, thus, the intensity of wear.

The bio-oils are considered to sustainable, alternative and environmentally friendly source of lubricants compared to commercial engine oils, on the base a mineral, synthetic or semi-synthetic. They are obtained from natural raw material (vegetable or animal oils), which are renewable and non-toxic to humans, living organisms and environment. The vegetable oils called green oils, natural oils, bio-oils or natural esters. They can be obtained from plant seeds, that may be consumed – edible oils (for instance: rapeseed oil) or which cannot be consumed – inedible (for example: linseed oil). The conducted research into linseed oil and its different quantity additives (25% and 50%) to commercial marine mineral oil intended for a medium-speed 4-stroke, trunk marine engine (i.e. Marinol RG 1240). The flash point and dependence of viscosity and temperature were compared and assess. It has been proven that vegetable oils have a high ignition temperature and very small viscosity change in the range of temperatures presented, i.e. high viscosity index. According to the results, it can be recommended the addition of 25% linseed oil in the base lubricant is the relevant for lubricating a medium speed 4-stroke marine engine. The vegetable additives can improve a viscosity index a lube oil, and they will be positively affected environmental protection

Opis:
The viscosity of lubricant is physical quantity, which has major impact on slide bearings and micro-bearings functioning parameters. Applying computer simulations as a tool to study the hydrodynamic lubrication phenomenon, researcher should create a computational model as close as possible to the real object, therefore the knowledge about a viscosity dependence on temperature and shear rate of bearing lubricating oil is essential in simulations of slide bearings hydrodynamic lubrication. This paper present research, which show, that also an influence of pressure on oil dynamic viscosity should be taken into consideration. The aim of this work is to determine the influence of pressure on the dynamic viscosity of lubricating oil. In this research the selected new and used engine oils were investigated. The dynamic viscosity of oil was measured at different pressures and temperatures in the function of shear rate. In this work the engine oils of passenger vehicles were investigated. The viscosity measurements for new and used lubricating oils were made with the Thermo Scientific Haake Mars III rheometer. The received information will be used in the simulations of hydrodynamic lubrication of slide bearings and microbearings. Fitting viscosity curves, described by a viscosity model adopted in simulations, to the experimental data, obtained for motor oils, will allow to find the values of coefficients of that model. The determined coefficients will be set in the relationship defined by the adopted viscosity model, implemented in the used for simulations CFD software. Collected data may also be useful for designing bearings and sliding friction pairs.

The dynamic monitoring of oil consumption in IC engines is approached with various techniques ranging from radioactive counting to detection of halogenated tracer compounds or polyaromatic hydrocarbon tracers, to monitoring unburned hydrocarbons as residues from engine oil. This article discusses the method of gaseous SO2 measurement in raw exhaust it's benefits and limitations of today’s status. Modern engines consume about 2 to 5 g/h of engine oil under low and medium load but consumption may go up to 130 g/h in negative load conditions. Particulate filters must be desulfated every 5000 km even when sulfur free fuel is in use. For the oil measurement in the raw exhaust all possible Sulfur compounds are converted to SO2 in a hot oxidizing atmosphere. Additional pure oxygen in the form of ozone is added to the oxidizer for very low lambda engine conditions and the conversion of sulfur on particulates into SO2. A sensitive mass spectrometer operating in an ion molecule ionization mode measures gaseous SO2 from concentrations of 0.02 ppm to 50 ppm in measurement cycles from 2 Hz to 0.2 Hz depending on if long term measurement or dynamic operation is chosen. Technical description of pressure reduction, gas transfer, oxidation efficiencies and lower detection levels of the instrumentation are given as well as data on a complete engine map and data on reproducibility of the SO2 method are presented.

Leading to reformation of proecologic abilities of transport's vehicles and especially cars vehicles are connected with properly economy of the working liquids. It intakes should be optimal. This postulate is working in an activity of cars' tycoons and producers of working liquids. In this case a good example is lifetime of engines' oils. By one hand it leads to lengthen of engine's oil lifetime by improvement of its abilities, by second hand producers are limiting time of oil's change but admittedly that mileage is constantly rising. Everything it leads to constantly drop of the oil's unit consumption. There are exist extra possibilities of improving an oil consumption if oil's unit consumption treats like proecologic parameter. The base of that are changes in oil lifetime based on exploitations' terms for particular copy of vehicle. By one hand it secures of properly use car vehicle by second hand it resists the human factor in exploitation process, thanks that it excludes situations where oil will be changed to early - as a consequence of extra consumption or to late - as a probability of engines' damages. From the analysis of solid constant mileage to change engine's oil comes how big problem is it. Properly researches and conclusions presented in this publication.
Wszystko to prowadzi do nieustannego „jednostkowego" obniżania zużycia oleju silnikowego. Odpowiednie badania i wynikające stąd wnioski, przedstawiono w niniejszej publikacji.

The paper presents the results of a thorough analysis of selected physicochemical parameters of engine oils at the end of their useful life, based on the oil change intervals assumed by vehicle users. Twelve samples of used Castrol Edge 5W/30 synthetic oil and five samples of used Castrol Magnatec 10W/40 semi-synthetic oil were tested. The Eralytics's ERASPEC OIL device was used for the assessment of the following parameters: degree of oxidation, degree of nitration, degree of sulfonation, water content, glycol content, total base number (TBN), total acid number (TAN) and kinematic viscosity at 40°C and 100°C. The research was conducted on the basis of the ASTM E2412-10 standard. The results regarding the parameter limit exceedances have also been presented in the paper. For both synthetic and semi-synthetic oils, the exceedance of kinematic viscosity measured at 40°C was particularly striking. In fourteen samples (out of seventeen tested), at least one exceedance of the limit value (out of nine analyzed) has been observed.

Paper chromatography is a method that allows rapid assessment of the condition and identification of fuel, water and soot contaminants in engine oil. The paper contains an analysis of the suitability of rapid paper chromatography for assessing the operating quality of engine oil. It takes into account the comparison of physicochemical parameters by classical methods with the quality of commercial paper chromatography. The presented research allowed verifying the suitability of paper chromatography for laboratory evaluation of engine oil quality. It was found that a more extensive analysis of the oil condition is possible provided that the chromatographic separation time of oil dispensed onto filter paper is increased from 1 minute to 40 minutes. Linear relationships were observed between the surface area of the stain core after 40-minute separation and selected viscosity parameters (e.g. kinematic viscosity measured at 40°C). Based on rapid paper chromatography, it was found that reasonable decisions can be made about the quality of engine oil, and thus about replacement or further use of the oil.

Opis:
The main propulsion engine is the heart of a vessel which carries the entire load of the ship and propels to move ahead. The main engine consists of various sub-systems, the fuel oil system is the most important one. Fuel oil system provides fuel to the engine via a fuel injector mounted on the engine cylinder head. During the voyage, the main engine of a ship encounters a variation in loads and stresses due to rough weather to harsh manoeuvring, which sometimes leads to the breakdown of the main engine. Fuel oil systems are identified as one of the main reasons for engine breakdown. Many accidents happened due to the failure of the main engine fuel oil system in the last two decades. To ensure safe and reliable main propulsion engine operation, it is required to assess the reliability of a fuel oil system. However, there is a significant lack of appropriate data to develop the reliability assessment techniques for fuel oil system. This study proposes appropriate data collection and analysis procedure for the reliability assessment of a fuel oil system. Data related to Failure Running Hours (FRH) of a fuel oil system is collected from 101 experienced marine engineers through a questionnaire. The collected data processed using a box plot and analysed for a normality test. It helps to identify the generalization of the data. Moreover, this study identified failure-prone components of a fuel oil system. The collected data will help in developing reliability assessment techniques for accurate reliability analysis of a fuel oil system. The identified failure-prone components will assist in future reliability analysis and risk mitigation strategies for improving the overall safety and reliability of the shipping industry.
