Opis:
The aim of the study is to outline the role of language as the most effective tool of communication accessible to human beings in the context of international communication. Intercultural communication allows to indicate the diversity of intentions with which we enter into communicative relationships. It also highlights the need to take into account cultural difference in order to achieve understanding: the greater the extent to which diversity is taken into account and the greater the accompanying effort to reconstruct cultural beliefs, the higher the efficiency of communication.

Contemporary humanities are confronted with a search for new forms of legitimization. Processes that enforce such a necessity stem from the technicization of contemporary culture. The methodologies of the humanities, and even their status as a group of academic disciplines, are questionable. The aim of the article is to argue that these external and internal problems in the humanities are interlinked with the state of being after the end of theory. This assumption is grounded on the thesis that the humanities need to find a solution to the impasse which could be described as the questions of what theory means and why society should be concerned about it.

Opis:
The aim of the study is to present the concept of resettlement multiculturality. The multiculturality of displaced persons, the kind characterising resettlement in Western Poland, was not brought about spontaneously and is governed by entirely different principles. At this point one should contemplate the methods that assisted in the management of a city that is multicultural in character due to residents having been resettled, a city whose identity has not fully formed. Such a measure could also bring empirical confirmation uprooting occurred in the fourth generation. Presenting the concept of resettlement multiculturality the author is making use of – among other things – memory studies, Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of capital and his concepts of habitus, field and game, and the research of Geert Hofstede.

Opis:
Two parallel problems come under close scrutiny in my paper. First of them concerns the question whether victims of a (politically or economically) stronger thief are ethically entitled to steal their property in revenge? I argue that this kind of theft could be seen as a hidden form of protection because the symbolic relation between the first aggressor and his victim is extremely unequal. An ordinary man usually has no public means to oppose corporation or political institution. He has then to decide whether he chooses ethical perfection, which would stop him from doing anything; or he is ready, by himself, to inflict punishment on an (institutionalized) thief. The other problem concerns the consequences of the acceptance of ‘the balancing strategy.’ The case of modern state shows how hidden fighting against a stronger thief brings about opposite results. On one hand, an unfair political institution is deprived of its rights. But, on the other hand, the insubordinate citizen, who plays the part of the only owner of the criterion of fairness, destroys the rules of common life.

Opis:
The author is of the opinion that contemporary times could be described by the concept of a paradox forcing a redefinition of the fundamental concepts sanctioning the functioning of what until now would have seemed permanent states of focus of culture. On the one hand the satiated and ostensibly safe Western Civilisation is dealing with ever more problems it has produced for itself, whether in the form of post-colonial legacy that it is having to contend with, or the effects of hazy and inefficient multiculturalism projects, while on the other hand for over a decade, symbolically since the turn of the 21st century, the world has been undergoing fragmentation, and the tribal sentiments of diverse groups, who previously had no say of their own or were denied the right to have one, are being heard.

Opis:
Given the marked presence of humour in many areas of thought and language, as well as in people’s social, emotional, and aesthetic experiences, it comes as no surprise that humour studies are considered an interesting interdiscipline worth studying. This paper is, therefore, an attempt at joining three academic fields, namely advertising discourse, Cultural Linguistics, and humour studies. The author will enquire into the operation of (debatable) humour applied in multimodal advertising discourse. She will make the cultural aspect the focus of attention in order to highlight the role of cross-cultural differences in the perception of humour. Based on her previous studies (Stwora 2020a, 2020b) on attitudinal responses to controversial humorous ads in English, she will join in an exploratory discussion with a view to showing the ways in which ad reception may be influenced by the culture-specific force of humour. Working towards a more comprehensive outlook on humour in use in the context of advertising discourse, the present paper will start with a few words on humour in general and on debatable humour in ads. Then, the cultural side of humour will be discussed. Finally, the author will discuss her research from the cultural standpoint.

The aim of the article is to show the way in which the technologically mediated culture of consumption determines what we call lifestyle in the perspective of the critical cultural studies paradigm. Contemporary consumption, based as it is on the counter-cultural ideas which appeal to difference, creativity and lifestyle, solves the central problem of consumerism – supplying a constant stream of novelty in a situation where things are losing just this quality. Lifestyle has become a life strategy, the framework for interpreting consumer choice suggests that freely made decisions concerning symbolic and aesthetic pleasures provide a sense of fulfilment in a successful and varied lifestyle. Culture is increasingly perceived through the prism of who we should be, and what we should have, in order to achieve by means of these an illusory goal, namely that of identity.

paradoxicality
Opis:
The aim of the study is to demonstrate the paradoxicality determining human life. The natural aspiration of the subject is to strive to achieve order, enabling a reasonably satisfying and passably predictable life, guaranteeing the essential sense of security both on an individual and on a social dimension. The ancient writers and thinkers saw the origins of differentiation, and thereby of the impossibility of achieving coherence and order, in the external reality. Views of thinkers of the 19th and 20th centuries show not only a demand for diversity to be taken into consideration, but also reveal their picture of culture as something highly heterogeneous that cannot be reduced to just a single, preferred vision. Multitude of models and values creates the potential for dialogue, which is irregular and spontaneous.

Opis:
Over the last decades, it has been possible to observe an increasing amount of research having for common assumption the impossibility to dissociate changes which occur within medias, culture and society. Mediatization theories, particularly developed in Scandinavian countries, and American configurations of cultural studies utilize interesting tools and conceptual material to think about the transformations that occur within the social field. Both encourage questioning the power relations and struggles that inform those transformations. However, their manner of conceiving and using “culture” and “media” as conceptual tools for analysis differ, bringing multiple and diverging ways to study and question objects, phenomenon and processes. These two approaches do not appear as irreconcilable and would take advantage of being put in dialogue as a way to see how they can possibly complement each other. For example, by enriching their mutual understanding of power and, therefore, their critical character. This article draws points of tension and convergence between cultural studies and mediatization studies. It explores cultural studies' focus on (cultural) practices as a privileged site to analyse power relations and their ongoing negotiations by and through media. This approach may resonate or complement Couldry’s (2004) proposal for a paradigm of media as practice “to help us address how media are embedded in the interlocking fabric of social and cultural life” (p. 129). This dialogue between mediatization theories and cultural studies is being put to the forefront with the hope it may allow further discussions and relevant theoretical avenues for critical research located within both fields. Thinking of this possible interplay let foresee the possibility of questioning objects, processes and phenomenon in a critical perspective in a context produced and characterised by medias’ omnipresence. It would allow researchers to question the power struggles that are negotiated through practices themselves, without neglecting the consideration that most of these practices are made by, with or within media.

Opis:
This issue of AVANT is dedicated to hauntology, an approach originally defined by Jacques Derrida as a “logic of haunting” that is “larger and more powerful than an ontology or a thinking of Being,” and that “harbor[s] within itself, but like circumscribed places or particular effects, eschatology and teleology themselves” (Derrida 1994: 10). At a most general level, hauntology is a study of spectrality and spectres-that is, entities and processes that exceed any definite categorization; accordingly, it inevitably questions the established notions of being, thereby transforming the status of the objects and subjects of knowledge, and contesting the possibility of objectivity. The very idea of spectres-positioned as they are between worlds and times-disrupts the conventional means of measuring time and space, as well as all kinds of dichotomous conceptualizations, including “the sharp distinction between the real and the unreal, the actual and the inactual, the living and the non-living, being and non-being” (Derrida 1994: 11). Significantly for the articles collected in this issues, the figure of the spectre questions the divisions between texts, and the separation between the individual and the social/communal, thus palpably demonstrating the impossibility of examining any concept or text independently of others. Accordingly, instead of looking for certainties, the scholar of spectres looks for sites of crossings, borrowings, and contaminations, re-discovering traces of other times, places, and beings in the seemingly solid here and now, and producing somewhat melancholic accounts of a culture that is both already haunted and potentially haunting.

The aim of the study is to analyse the stereotype of the Pole in the context of the Applied Cultural Studies perspective. Four basic areas of research can be discerned: other people’s variable associations concerning Poles; other people’s prejudices and generalizations that influence their attitude towards Poles; the results of Poles’ self-evaluation made on the basis of their current experience; the “social frameworks of memory” which shape the Poles’ ideas concerning their place in history. Since the purpose of this investigation is to reconstruct the mechanism of self-stereotyping, which involves scholars as much as the society they serve, contingent feelings about their situation are of secondary importance.

Opis:
It is contended that technological education, forming the outlook of the modern-day person should accord to universal human values (the good, love, harmony, aesthetics, etc.). The achievements of scientific and technological advance should be subordinate to these values. It is argued that humanising the training of technology teachers requires a strategy and the establishment of regular courses in culture for technology teachers. It is suggested that humanising the paradigm of education changes the basic requirements of the dialectical method in revealing the contradictions of the object of study. Key ideas of pedagogy focus on the uniqueness of each student and take into account her/his interests and values. This may require individualising the learning process. The abovementioned issues can be responded to through a cultural approach to technology teachers’ training. The content of courses should recognise the integrity of the cultural experience of humanity: ethical, religious, philosophical, aesthetic, technical, professional, etc., in addition to the scientific way of knowing the world. The use of technology in everyday life has greatly increased. There has been a shift of cultural patterns from the realm of mass consciousness and mass behaviour that operate on a natural basis to new patterns characterised by individualisation, analysis, and even consciousness transformation and construction. Therefore, teaching that the technological culture of self-determination is culturally determined must be included in the cultural training of technology teachers.

Opis:
The study aims at the concept of culture in the context of cultural patterns which, in the process of the formation of culture, determine the ways of thinking, behavior and activities of each member of a culture. In the author’s opinion, these patterns may lead to the formation of various cultural patterns which frequently contradict one another, and finally to the strangeness which results from the different ideological assumptions within each culture. Such a concept of cultural patterns provides a new approach for studying culture, the creations and manifestations of culture and, last but not least, the functioning of the members of a culture. Contemporary concepts of the citizen usually focus on the liberal model of a civil society and to a lesser degree on communitarianism, while the other concepts are lean towards the cosmopolitan vision of the citizen of the world.
